BOFC MS SQL Server migration to Oracle

Hello,
We use BOFC, Intercompany with MS SQL Server 2008 R2 DB.
Customer asks us about possibility migration MS SQL Server 2008 R2 to Oracle 11g.
I didn't find any information in SMP,  lot of information about migration NW systems, but no information about FC, IC.
Has anyone done this?

Hello,
For FC, You can use a transfer functionality to transfer data and objetcs from SQL DB to Oracle DB:
* Create an empty Oracle DB (For pre requisites see a SAP Install and Admin document)
* Create a new site in FC SQL Database (If the DB is able to create a new site)
* Send all objects and datas to this new site
* Initialize Oracle DB as a child DB
* Connect to this new Oracel DB in exclusif mode and receive the transferred Data
* Modify the site that is owner of the objects from the new to the old one

  • Error in SQL Server Migration to Oracle

    Hi,
I'm trying to migrate from SQL Server 2000 to Oracle 10g. I'm using SQL Developer 1.2 for the migration. After creating the Migration Repository in a new Oracle instance, I'm getting the following error when I execute Capture for any of the objects :
oracle.dbtools.metadata.persistence.PersistenceException: ORA-04063: package body "MENTORADM.MD_META" has errors ORA-06508: PL/SQL: could not find program unit being called: "MENTORADM.MD_META" ORA-06512: at "MENTORADM.MD_PROJECTS_TRG", line 3 ORA-04088: error during execution of trigger 'MENTORADM.MD_PROJECTS_TRG'
I looked at MENTORADM.MD_META, the package has compile errors. It is in wrapped binary format and is generating an error - ORA-01031: insufficient privileges when you try to compile it. My DBA has given the id I use for the migration all the privileges stated in the SQL Developer User's Guide - Migrating Third Party Databases - 2.4.2 Requirements for Creating Destination Oracle Objects but this does not resolve the error.
Can you please advise on how I can resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Uriel1996

I looked at the current code in development and the help seems unclear what is needed for the migration repository, what privileges are you usng?
    -Turloch
I used the generation user privileges in the current documentation and the wrapped packages in development built with no errors.
    The privileges granted were:
CREATE USER migrations IDENTIFIED BY migrations
    DEFAULT TABLESPACE users TEMPORARY TABLESPACE temp;
GRANT CONNECT, RESOURCE, CREATE VIEW, CREATE PUBLIC SYNONYM TO
    migrations WITH ADMIN OPTION;
GRANT ALTER ANY ROLE, ALTER ANY SEQUENCE, ALTER ANY TABLE, ALTER TABLESPACE,
ALTER ANY TRIGGER, COMMENT ANY TABLE, CREATE ANY SEQUENCE, CREATE ANY TABLE,
CREATE ANY TRIGGER, CREATE ROLE, CREATE TABLESPACE, CREATE USER, DROP ANY
SEQUENCE, DROP ANY TABLE, DROP ANY TRIGGER, DROP TABLESPACE, DROP USER, DROP ANY
ROLE, GRANT ANY ROLE, INSERT ANY TABLE, SELECT ANY TABLE, UPDATE ANY TABLE TO
    migrations;
Note that oracle has released oracle XE as a free download which you can use on your own desktop [you are the dba] as long as you use less than 4 gigs disk space - plenty for a repository.

  • MS SQL Server Migration to Oracle on Unix

I've notice previous questions regarding this type of migration.
I am planning and preparing to perform such a migration.
Has anyone actually completed this type of migration
    successfully?
If so, did all MS SQL Server objects including stored procedures
    migrate successfully?
If not, what type of problems did you encounter?
How easy/difficult was the Oracle Migration Workbench software to
    use?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Faisal,
I recommend that you use the Workbench to move the data. The
Workbench has two methods for moving data.
    1) An automatic data move
    2) It generates BCP and SQL Loader scripts
The BCP and SQL Loader scripts are very fast for tables with big
volumes of data to be moved (but you may experience difficulty
with carriage returns). The automatic datamove requires no manual
intervention and should move all data without any problems. It
may be a little less performant than the script based solution.
Using the workbench is fairly quick and straightfoward.

  • Sql server migration to oracle -Sample vs actual dump

I am able to successfully migrate the sample data provided in the demo for 'offline captured' option. My original SQL-server file is with extension .BAK which I am able restore in SQL server. How can I create the file in the same format as sample from SQL server data base? in order to simulate the same steps for migration to oracle..
    demo
    Thanks,
    Hesh.

    Hesh,
I am still not sure what you mean by using a .BAK file.
The OCP file is generated from SQL*Developer as follows -
    2.6.2 Offline Capture
To perform an offline capture of an IBM DB2, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or
Sybase Adaptive Server database, you create a set of offline capture scripts, run these
scripts outside SQL Developer to create the script output (a dump of the third party
metadata tables), and load the script output (the .ocp file containing the converted
    model) using SQL Developer.
    ■ To create the script file (a Windows .bat file or a Linux or UNIX .sh file) and
related files, click Tools, then Migration, then Third Party Database Offline
Capture, then Create Database Capture Scripts.
When this operation completes, you are notified that several files (.bat, .sql, .ocp)
have been created, one of which is the controlling script. You must run the
controlling script (outside SQL Developer) to populate the object capture
properties (.ocp) file with information about the converted model.
    ■ To load the converted model from the object capture properties (.ocp) file
generated by the offline capture controlling script, click Tools, then Migration,
then Third Party Database Offline Capture, then Load Database Capture Script
    Output.
This is all detailed in the SQL*Developer User Guide referred to earlier.
Have you referred to the documentation ?
If you can explain again exactly what you are trying to do and the steps you have done so far then we can help further.

  • Migration From SQL Server 2005 to Oracle DB through Oracle SQ Dev Problem

    Hi all,
we are trying to do a full Migration from MS SQL Server 2005 to Oracle DB 9.2 i
we are using Oracle SQL Developer V 1.5.3,
the capturing of the DB and the conversion to the oracle model completed succefully
however when we try to generate the scripts from the converted model
the script generation hangs on a sequence and no further progress is made (the script generation pop up keeps still on a certain sequence displaying its name, and thats it )
    no error messages are displayed,
how can we know the reason for this? or atleast find a log for whats happening...
    any suggestions?
    Thank you

    Hi,
migrating a sequence shouldn't make a problem. I did a quick test. I created this table in SQL Server:
    create table test_seq (col1 int identity(1,1),col2 char(1))
Then I captured the table, converted the table and generated the script. There was no problem.
    CREATE SEQUENCE succeeded.
    CREATE TABLE succeeded.
    Connected
    TRIGGER test_seq_col1_TRG Compiled.
As you see, applying the script was also successful.
I am using Oracle RDBMS 11g, I don't know whether this makes a difference. Do you have any 11g instance available to test it?
Can you show me one of the sequences that are causing the hang? Is the CREATE SEQUENCE statement already in the generated script, or not? Your table is for sure more complex than my simple example.

    Wolfgang

I'm trying to migrate a Sql Server 2k database to an Oracle 8i schema using OMWB. After using BCP to collect metadata information on the source database, I tried to capture the source data model and got a "Capture aborted" message on the progress screen (even though then it appears a dialog window reporting "0 errors and 0 warnings", funny!). Do you have a good technical reason for not wanting to use the Migration Workbench?
Given that it's free and does a hell of a lot of the work for you, why wouldn't you use it?
Other than that, I would say you would be on your own...

  • Migrating DB from SQL Server (Windows) to Oracle (Unix)

I wish to migrate a SQL Server 2000 database on a Windows environment to an Oracle database on a Unix environment.
Are there any issues with using the Oracle Migration Workbench to migrate a SQL Server database to Oracle between different operating systems?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi!
After trying to migrate only a copule of schemas from sqlserver, my solution appeared by itself. It seems that something goes wrong if you migrate only selected users, so I build up a test instance in windows, made the workbench repository on it, and ran a full migration from all the users to this test environment.
After this it was nice, cause I made an exp from the squema I wanted and imported it on production environment.
PD: Migration logs only raised java related problems. I got quite crazy realizing what jdbc version I had, but it wasn't the problem.
By the way, if you try to run sqlloader scripts, be careful with language issues, cause I had to reverse data loading because incorrect typos or so.
Thanks a lot for your help.

  • Migration from of database and app from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g

    Hello Every body,
Lately, I have been requested to migrate one inhouse developed hub application from SQL server 2005 to Oracle 10g. The objective is to move application and also the database to Oracel 10g.
    Here is the current platform:
    OS Win 2008 64 bit
    JDK 1.4.2
    JBoss 3.2.5
    EJB 2.1
My question is what kind of issues you guys see in above upgrade. As far I know, Schema and Database migration can be done by Oracle workbench. Oracle 10g supports JDK 1.4. Oracle 10g also supports EJB 2.1.
Anything, I need to take into consideration or any risks or problems. I would like to list down all the risks, and accordingly, I am thinking of start the upgrade.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Zeeshan Qureshi

In general the Java/J2EE application needs work in the following categories:
    1. Connection Settings: Use Oracle JDBC drivers, create new data sources, connection pools and what not. Disable AUTOCOMMIT for Oracle JDBC Connections.
    2. For EJBs, you should regenerate the entity beans because some object names/column names might have changed in oracle.
    3. Any custom SQL that is in use in the EJBs will have to be ported to Oracle just as you would do in stored procedures and other applications.
    4. For Java front-ends, if you are using callouts to stored procedures and expecting result sets then they will require some changes. You need to modify the stored procedure call signature to include the REF CURSOR variables and process them.
    5. Changes to any SQL Server specific database functions manipulating character/date data will be required.
    6. CLOB/BLOB/XML apis are different across databases so if you are using those then focus on them as well.
    7. Retreiving Auto/generated keys from database also may need changes from what I have seen.
    Hope this helps..

NOTE: Not sure why but my posts from yesterday are not visible today. Even worse is that I can see them in one browser (FireFox) but not in Internet explorer. Crazy browser day I am having.

  • Migrating SQL Server DB to Oracle DB - probably EASY answer

I completed the tutorial on migrating SQL Server DB to Oracle. When I try on my own database, it all migrated well except anything containing a datetime. When I run the oracle_ctl.bat file and view any of the log files, I see Record 1: Rejected - Error on table DBO_RIVERSIDEDB_NCWCD_TEST.TS6HOUR_TAIN, column DATE_TIME.
ORA-01843: not a valid month. Do I need to change the first line of the file set NLS_DATE_FORMAT=Mon dd YYYY HH:mi:ssAM ? In the .dat file created from the unload_script.bat, the data starts out 1275<EOFD>2007-05-11 00:00:00.000<EOFD>74.900000000000006<EOFD><EOFD><EORD>1275<EOFD>. So my questions is about the date_format - is that the same for all SQL Server databases or do I need to enter something based on MY database? I am definitely a newbie so this is probably a super easy question. Thanks so much for any help!

    Hello,
There are two different date format in SQL Server.
    1] DateTime : 2010-08-03 12:48:15.170
    2] SmallDateTime: 2010-08-03 12:48:00
Both the date will be inserted in Oracle Date column.
Is there any automated way to generate datamove script to tackle these differences? I've around 200 tables to be migrated and there may be many such cases.
The issue with Oracle SQL Developer setting i.e. Tools >Preferences> (Under) Migration> Data Move Option, there are two masks we can specify, one for Date Mask and other for Timestamp. How can I set both of these for converting data into Date, not in timestamp.
Below is my .CTL file, none of below fields are timestamp, but since incoming data in in timestamp format, it is applying timestamp mask and eventually failing to insert data into table
    load data
    infile '[PARTSORDER].dat'
    "str '<EORD>'"
    into table admin.PARTSORDER
    fields terminated by '<EOFD>'
    trailing nullcols
    ORDERID ,
    GenDate "TO_TIMESTAMP(:GenDate, 'YYYY-MM-DD.HH24.MI.SS.ff3')",

  • Migration from SQL Server 2005 to Oracle 10g

    Dear buddies,
I need to migrate my tables with data from SQL Server 2005 to Oracle 10g. How can I do it in the best possible way?
    Please guide me.
    Nith

    Nith,
I doubt if there is one best practice that can cover all cases of migrating data from sql server to Oracle. l generally find various factors case-by-case that make me chose one approach over the other. Without considering the business case and environment specific factors, some of the things I would like to know would be: The data types of the tables columns, table sizes, number of tables and if this is a one time process or a recurring process.
One of the easiest (some times rather pesky) process would be:
-Dump source data (Sql Server data) into flat files, csv or any preferred format
-Setup a set of staging set of tables in the destination DB (Oracle in your case). You can setup the stage tables to enforce data-types, value sets and even some level of integrity constraints or any data logic or what ever you would like to filter out. Load the flat file data into a set of Oracle stage tables (Sql*Loader would be a good candidate)
-You can always move data from these stage tables to you application tables
You can script this whole process to run as batch or on demand or how ever you would like.
I am sure you can google and find a bunch of proprietary as well as open source tools to do the same with little to a lot of work.
    good luck!

  • Migration from SQL SERVER 2008 to Oracle 10g issues.

    Hi ,
I'm trying to migrate from SQL Server 2008 to Oracle 10g and I end up with some issues that I wanted to ask some info about it.
First, I was following a tutorial
    http://st-curriculum.oracle.com/obe/db/hol08/sqldev_migration/mssqlserver/migrate_microsoft_sqlserver_otn.htm
and and in the last version of Oracle SQL developer I downloaded, I didn't find the Load Database Capture Script Output option.
My first question is how can I either add this option or is there a new way to load the capture script ?
Then I use the migration wizard and after following everything, I had the migration complete message from the application.
When I tried to open my connectionss, it tells me version 11.2 is required. Does that mean that Oracle SQL developper 3 only
do the migration for oracle 11g? And if I tried the previous versions, it doesn't support SQL server 2008.
What do I do in this case ?
    Thanks !

    Thank you for your reply.
After using the wizard and made the offline migration script, in the Migration projects window I made a move data to the oracle connection I previously made and after when I tried to reopen the connection, I couldn't.
Well I didn't retry it yet to see if I'll have the same behavior but basically this is what I think I did. When I tried to open the connection I made, it says, Oracle 11.2 is required.
Now, I just generate target from the convert model and it says migration complete but how do I test it and I do I go to oracle and see change ?
Do I had to create a special user in SQL Server to log to it first ? How do I logon to it ?

  • How to migrate an existing Microsoft SSIS deployment if it is decided to replace SQL Server with an Oracle database?

    Hi Oracle Gurus!
Currently, I am designing an ETL solution that transforms and loads a lot of data from flat files and sends it to an SQL Server 2008 R2 database for storage. However, at a future point of time, it may be decided to add or even replace SQL Server with an Oracle 11g database.
Currently, I am writing script transforms in C# to dynamically generate SSIS packages to tansform and load the data into SQL Server. But considering that in future, an Oracle 11g or 12c database might be added to, or replace the SQL Server database, how do I make my script transforms (or whatever else I am developing currently for SQL Server) reusable to the extent possible?
Or more precisely, what steps do I take, from an Oracle point of view, to ensure that any future migration of data to an Oracle database would be smooth to the extent possible?
Looking up to my Oracle Gurus for enlightenment in this matter!
    Novice Kid

When you're writing your on C# code to load data into the SQL Server you have to modify the routines so that they will work with Oracle.
One approach is to use the extproc agent which would allow you to directly call external programs with all the logic in it to perform the load of your files and to put the data into the Oracle database. Another option would be to use utl_file package (or equivalents) which will allow you to open external files from your Oracle database and to directly read its content and then to pass it to the related tables.
