Booking w/ AA Miles Experience...Disappointing

Let me start by saying this is partly my fault and I accept that. I should have researched what options one has for using these AA miles before I got the US Airways card. The following is merely a personal experience of mine, not meant to discourage anyone else from getting a card for these miles but simply to share and possibly help someone else. If the miles are working out great for any of you then thats awesome. Not so much for me. Here goes  Made a purchase and paid the $89 AF for US Airways card, got the 50k miles about 4-5 weeks later, went to book an international flight for my birthday trip in October on June 7th. Not the most pleasant experience. Searched from SFO to Costa Rica, St Lucia, Montego Bay, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Dominican Republic and Hawaii. Took me 3 hours to find something suitable, keep in mind I was searching through seven different destinations and flexible with the dates. Here were some issues:1.) Flights for miles redemption all seemed to have 2+ stops vs priced flights with only 1 stop.2.) I found flights for less than 25k each way bc I checked during low season for my destinations. Closer to Spring a lot more miles were required.  3.) Total travel time each way was between 20-30 hours on average compared to 9-15 hours on average with price flights. Crazy long layovers.4.) Your seating options are severely limited when booking this way. Even if you can clearly see the flight is completely empty when you book with miles you get a select number of seats and thats it. For my flights it was either sit in the back after Row 20 or pick Row 13 which has no recline option. Awesome5.) There are zero upgrade options without using more miles. What you pick is what you get. Even in economy if you would like to pay for main cabin extra seats thats not allowed. I was told the only thing I could do was wait until the day of departure and talk to an agent to see if an upgrade was available.6.) Using more miles for an upgrade is an option yes but its a bit of a mess. I could have chosen business class for 30k miles each way, however, that only covered business for one leg of each trip bc one flight was listed as a business upgrade and the second was listed as first class. So after using 30k total for round trip economy I was told to use an additional 60k for business and 100k for first class so an extra 160k miles to upgrade all four legs. Pass. All things considered I suppose I should count myself lucky bc for 30k miles I finally managed to find flights with only 1 stop and total travel time of 11 hours each way. But they must have caught on to that quick because the very next day that flight option was no longer available under award travel and the lowest travel time each way for the same dates shot up to 22 and 24 hours. Not sure if this was such a frustrating ordeal bc I was looking at international flights, because of my departure location or what but I have 23k miles left and I would gladly put them in someone elses account if I knew anyone that wanted them. Will not be using these again, glad I didnt have to spend 3k to get the miles thats for sure. Regularly this flight would be roughly $900 and I paid $81.52 in taxes and fees so I guess the value works out well but AA flights in general seemed overpriced by about $200 - $300 compared to other carriers. Definitely looking forward to my trip but geez!

I myself have been looking at international flights, but I am pretty set on LAN/DTW to LHR. Both LAN and DTW have a layover @ JFK, and I think that's almost to be expected. AA also does off and on peak awards which is what I believe you're talking about. It's amazing that I can book a 1,200 dollar ticket for 40k miles off-peak, but if I was stuck paying onpeak when I just saw the difference in miles I would be a little annoyed, too! :s

  • Mac Book Pro C2D User Experience

    Hi all,
Is anyone using the latest MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo?
would be nice if someone can share the experiences? How is it running, is it stable, any minor or major problems so far? etc...
    cheers

Basically, it is an incredible machine. After several iterations, you can feel that the design is mature now (inside and outside). The new 160Gb Hitachi drive is blazing fast eventhough it turns at 5400rpm. Beautiful screen, backlight keyboard works just when it should. No noise, runs cool, overall performance is astounding (I am coming from a PB G4/1.25MHz). Sounds like a dream machine.
Unfortunately, after 5 days I have just returned mine as DOA. I experienced numerous kernel panics, in all sorts of situations that I won't detail here. Reinstalled the OS several times, etc. Obviously some kind of hardware malfunction i couldn't pinpoint. The people at Apple were extremely understanding and helpful. It took 30 minutes to get an RMA. Big plus on the service.
I only wish the quality control was what it used to be a few years ago. I get the feeling too much hardware (or software for that matter) hits the streets without proper quality control. This applies to all the industry. I suddenly realise that this is my third RMA in the last 30 days (Maxtor and MGE being the others). Things break these days.
Don't forget to backup, and get an AppleCare.

  • WD My Book Studio II - Overheating Experiences ?

    Good evening all !
This is just a call out for anyone who's been using the WD 2TB Externals over the past couple of years ?  I've bought a few - like 3 or 4 I cant remember, to use for backup disks for data using either retrospect or Time Machine.  Just asking your experiences about the drives/power supplies/issues you might have come accross...
Ive had to look at 2 of them today, returned from a site where I had been using them for direct FW 800 connect backups ...
I've had some power supplies go on me and thought that was the issue today but now believe I have had an overheating problem which may have "partially" fried the board ... By partially I mean 1 of the 2 is mounting and I going to run utils on it tomorrow, but the other starts (when its cool) mounts but open the drive folders in Finder is excruciatingly slow, and by the end of the day I have given up after trying to reformat it and re-raid it and Ive had to force quit the WD Drive app ...
What I did notice was that when disk utility was trying to access the disk/s they were really heating up, I mean Ive touched hot disks before and this wasnt quite that hot but the board that runs the enclosure is between the 2 drives so I am thinking the enclosures interface board is partially or now fully fried !
Ive since bought a LaCie Big drive which looks a bit more heat dissipation friendly ... I hope so (for $600AU) !
Anyone else come across similar ?
    Mitch

I have used Lacie drives (Seagate inside with 3 of them), but they all had much shorter lifetime (2 years) than expected. This was 3-6 years ago.
I am using a lot of portable externals, of which I have three years of experience with 3 WesternDigital: very good but never install the smart software that comes with them (this goes for all makes).
I use about ten other makes, that I buy as internals (or they come from the macs where I change them by SSD's) in bought enclosures; Hitachi, Samsung, Seagate, etcetera, no problems at all.
I try to avoid Firewire connectors and use USB3 lately. I had some issues with Firewire earlier, I think Thunderbolt is too expensive, and USB3 speed is so high, that the HD's are operating at max speed.

  • My mac book has been a total disappointment. How has yours been?

First screen cracked now it will not load looks if the hard drive has been wiped. it cannot find it and apple replaced the charger because it would not charge
I am going to have to pay a lot of money to have it repaired and it is only 18 months old

I have had the crack for about a month and it only stopped working last night.
That doesn't rule out hardware problems.  I dropped a MBP, and it continued working normally for about a month, then just suddenly died with a bad logic board.  Physcially damaged electronics can fail later, as cycles of heating and cooling in the course of everyday use cause cycles of expansion and contraction (in metal especially), which stresses damaged components and eventually breaks delicate connections.
You say that "it cannot find [the hard drive]."  If the hard drive simply doesn't show up in something like Disk Utility, that's a hardware issue.  Either the connection has been broken or the drive itself has died.  You also say that the magsafe connector won't charge it, which again is an indication of hardware issues.  (You could try resetting the SMC, though with the other problems, I wouldn't have any confidence that that would help.)
To my knowledge it has not been badly handled.
The key there is "to your knowledge."  It's a given that something happened to break the screen.
I took it into apple and they said it would be £400 to repair.
Was that the total, to fix all problems, or just for the screen?  It seems like the right price just to replace the screen.  Keep in mind that, if I'm right, the total bill to repair everything else will be considerably higher.

  • Aperture book disappointement

    Hello,
I received yesterday a book I prepared/ordered using Aperture 3 and I am overall disappointed. Even if I do like the flexibility and easiness to use of the software, the quality of the binding of the book itself, I am very disappointed about the quality of the pictures: dull, horizontal striations, some noise. Ironically, it looks like the "proof" that printed on the printer at my office (a basic office laser printer) have less noise, striation and brighter colors !
Well, I was wondering if you had some tips to give so that I could improve/solve that. Do you know an email address that I could use to contact the Apple customer service ? It looks like navigating in the Apple support is complicated travel to find the right address...
Thanks in advance for your precious advices !
    Sébastien.

Thanks a lot. Hopefully that will be a good start !
but I'm not closing that topic as I hope to collect some advices from seasoned photographers. I'm novice in designing/printing books and I'm pretty sure I can improve my workflow (color space, calibration issues,...)
    Seb.

  • IPod touch 2.0 firmware and Audio Books

Hi, it was an interesting day trying to upgrade yesterday
That aside now that I am using 2.0 my iPod touch won't play my Audio Book for George Orwells 1984. It is a 9+ hour Audio Book all in one file. The iPod looks like it's going to play the file, then flips the image, and then slides back to my selection screen.
The file plays perfectly in my iTunes but once again fails when I remove and then resync the file on my iPod. I converted this Audio Book file from mp3 format and at first thought that might be the problem (although it played fine with the 1.1.4 firmware). As a test I formatted another mp3 Audio Book in the natural iPod Audio Book format. This smaller (2 hour) file played fine.
As a secondary test I converted 1984 into smaller chapters and unsurprisingly they all played fine individually. My gripe is that I don't want to have to remember what chapter I'm on when I go back to listen to my Audio Book. I feel like this might have to do with the sheer length of time the Audio Book spans but I am disappointed that it worked so well in firmware 1.1.4 and is failing to work at all in 2.0.
I'm just throwing this out there hoping someone can give me some insight about what to do. As it stands I'm considering dropping back to 1.1.4 because I'm also having considerable issues properly syncing my calendars, which is one of my favorite things about iPod touch.
    Thanks sincerely,
    Gregor

    Hi Gregor,
Holidaze posted a similar problem and I responded in length to that one. I have the same problem. In a nutshell I did some testing and narrowed it down a little bit. I can play up to a 1.6 megabyte file(5 cds of mp3s that I converted over) but when I tried a 1.9 megabyte file (6 cds of converted mp3s) it doesn't work (same problem as you with the sliding back to the previous screen). So somewhere between 1.6 and 1.9 megabyte file it gets too big for the new firmware. Sounds like a bug to me. I don't know why they would purposefully remove functionality so surely it is a bug.

  • After downloading Ios500 and iCloud, my saved iBook disappeared with my saved books? Any assistance ?

After downloading Ios5.1.1, and iCloud, my iBook disappeared from home screen with my saved books,,, has any one experience the same or can help? Please

They should show in the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app for re-downloading (re-downloading). If you updated to iOS 5.1.1 via your computer's iTunes were the books in your computer's iTunes library (did you do File > Transfer Purchases before updating) ? If the books weren't on your computer's iTunes then the update process wouldn't have been able to copy them back to your iPad after installing 5.1.1 on it.

  • Template for 5.5 x 8.5 200 page book

    Is there a template for a 5.5 x 8.5 book of about 200 pages?

    Mary,
You really have no business trying to make a book without some actual experience and training. I expect, though, that some of the online book publishers would have templates for that size that fit their workflows, and you can always google for something to see what comes up.
You can open a legacy file in a newer version, but I would advise against doing that, too, both because it will no longer be editable in the older version after you save it (should you want to send it back to the original designer) and because there are likely to be text re-flow issues you may not notice. New versions have different text engines and the text flows differently form older versions, but it will not affect existing text until you touch it in some way, then you can wind up with changes to page endings and oversets at the ends of stories, or chapters that start on the wrong page. There are also sufficient reports of directly converted legacy files suddenly going corrupt fro no apparent reason that I no longer convert except from .idml or .inx, which you would need to get from your original designer.
I can't really tell you how to fix errors unless I know what sort of errors these might be, and again, I suspect you probably should not be doing this yourself if you need to ask this question.

  • What is your export process for printing custom-sized books?

I will be printing my first custom-sized book created in Aperture.
Anyone have much experience doing this?
I am assuming that exporting to pdf and then sending that file to print is the process, but I'm wondering if the compression will affect the image quality enough to be concerned for a 9''x9'' book?

    Lots of experience here.
I outsource albums either as single page or double spread. Unfortunately Aperture only allows single page export, not as a full spread (required by some printers).
Unfortunately the Export options are a little limited, so read on
If you click on the Print button for your custom sized book, you'll get a dialog. Choose the PDF button at the bottom and a bunch of options will appear.
If you just want to export a proof for a client to review, you can select Save PDF to Aperture. The files will import as 200dpi JPEGs / TIFFs depending upon the option you choose. You can then export to a sharing service / web album etc.
If you want to export at a different dpi then DON'T choose the Save PDF to folder as JPEG option... again you'll get just 200dpi images. So what you can do is choose the Save as PDF option. When you choose that it will export the whole book as single pages in a PDF, with the embedded JPEGs (fully quality jpeg 12) at 350dpi (I know as I've checked this)....
You can then do 2 things:
    1. For services that require a single pages, run an automator action to run through the PDF and export the images at your desired DPI and change the colour profile (eg sRGB). Your images are then exported to the same folder. Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Folder%20as%20JPEG.zip
    2. For services that require a double page spread instead, run an automator action to run through the PDF, change the colour profile and DPI and then import to Aperture.
What I do is have an entirely separate project called Album Proofs and import all images into there. When the action runs, it will ask where to put the images - place them in Album Proofs. I then have a custom book size that is twice the width of the album you are creating (e.g. if making a 12x9, the size is 24x9) with no margins or spacing. Then create a template album (you can reuse by right clicking and selecting Duplicate Book) that has two images per page, each image taking up EXACTLY half of the page (again no margins or spacing). I then drag the images I imported into this template, then auto-fill unplaced images. Your images are then layed out as spreads... So now what you do is re-export using the Save as PDF print option. Then run the action described in 1 above.
Here's the action: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/117989/Save%20PDF%20to%20Aperture%20as%20JPEG.zip . If it doesn't work use the other action above and just import manually.
    Hope this helps

  • Sap mdm book review

    hi
i would like to buy sap press book : "SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management
by Loren Heilig, Steffen Karch, Roland Pfennig, and Christiane Hofmann"
any bodu who has gone through this book , please post their experiences,
    thanks
    akhil

    hi,
It Provides a good overview of the Netweaver tool suite along with short case studies of how the tools might be used in different businesses. If your company is evaluating MDM as a product, this is a good book. Provides understanding of the tool's usage and architecture - backed as needed by screen shots etc. However, don't expect it to be a detailed user's guide or programmer's manual. Overall readability is excellent. Until Amazon gets more info on this book listed on their site, a detailed table of contents is available on the SAP Press web page.
and also you will find, in help.sap.com --> you will find detailed documentation on
Console, import manager, data manager, and syndicator tools.
    hope this may help you,
    Regards,
    Srinivas

  • A Book To PDF?

Does anyone know how to create a PDF out of a Book????

While in the book mode type Command-P. Then in the Print window click on the PDF button and select Save as PDF.
Note: If you have any empty text boxes in the book iPhoto may crash or refuse to complete the job. Also, some users have reported that if they did any editing of photos while in the book mode iPhoto would crash when trying to create the PDF. Their solution was to do any editing in the regular library and then move the photos to the book. If you experience that try removing the photo from the book, revert to original, re-edit and then add to the book.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • My books

How can i open a book using. Adobe

There is no rhyme or reason to it. After using iBooks faithfully for years now, turning from the cheaper and better stocked Kindle store I am having major issues with it. Since my iPhone 5 battery dies so quickly, I bought a 5th gen iPod just for one app, iBooks. Well four days after this new purchase and it working out really well, I was reading one of my books when I decided to go to the iBooks store to check for a sequel. After that I went to my purchased shelf and then back to "my favorite books" shelf to my novel. To my shock only my purchased books remained but my long standing books, including the one I was reading, were all gone. The first obvious thought was that I was still somehow in the purchased shelf but I wasn't, I was in my "my favorite books" shelf. I went through all my shelves and every book I had not purchased through iBooks, all my PDFs and older free epubs were gone. I checked my iPhone 5 and they were still on there, did a soft reset to my iPod, restarted it, etc. basic troubleshooting but no books came back. I knew I could restore from backup via iCloud but I was without wifi. When I was finally able to connect to a wifi hotspot I was able to erase the entire iPod and restore from backup which took all night leaving me bookless when I needed them the most. 24hrs later all is restored but how do I know this isn't going to randomly happen again some night when I really need a book? I'm very disappointed and would love to know why iBooks is so buggy after years!

  • Satellite C850 - downgrade from Win 8 to Win 7

    Epilogue:
Ok, so I've tried my best. I realise there are a few nice things about Win8 but like a ginger stepchild I just can't accept it as part of my life. I've had the laptop for 6 months now and regardless of changes I make I just keep on coming back to the fact I am trying to force Win 8 into the way Win 7 works which is daft when Win 7 is available. The only real reason I have held back is that Win 8 was the pre-installed OS (Toshiba should really review that decision, it's a horrible OS for anything other than casual tablet use and effectively cripples their hardware). However the time has come, I simply can't continue. Win7 must return to the throne.
    Going Forward:
Anyway, preamble aside, I have a couple of questions regarding the "downgrade". First off I have used the Toshiba 'Recovery Media Creator' to create the backup disks (which I presume return the laptop to the "out of the box" state) and backed up any important data. I have Windows 7 on a bootable USB stick (A legal copy too - oh, how decadent!).
I believe I need to set the _Secure Boot_ to *Disabled* and the _Boot Mode_ to *CSM Boot* in order for my bootable USB stick to be detected. I have read several pages about this and some suggest I will need some sort of SATA drivers on the stick too. Can someone confirm is this is true or not? If it is true, where do I get them from (URL if poss?) and where do I put them on the stick (root? Will it ask for a location?).
In terms of installation, it's just the standard Win 7 install, albeit you need to delete all the partitions on the HDD to remove the GPT legacy stuff, right? Once the Secure Boot/UEFI malarkey is gone it's just a standard laptop - or am I fooling myself?
    What next:
YOU! I NEED YOU! In a Kitchener fashion (if you don't know what I mean, google Kitchener), I need you to tell me if I am being an idiot. Not about the "downgrade" as that is possibly the most intelligent thing I will do with this laptop - Win 8 is so frustratingly awkward that I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the first Operating System diagnosed with a personality disorder - the thing I need people to tell me is whether I have missed anything out on my "return of zen" checklist. Is it really just BIOS, USB boot (with SATA drivers?), delete partition(s), create new unified partition then finally install the new OS? Does that all sound about right or am I going to be stuck half way through only to find I've forgotten to change someting leaving my laptop fubar'ed?
    TL;DR?
Win 7 over Win 8, need assistance.
    Summary:
Thanks for anyone replying. Power to your, em... well whatever you want power to (except there you dirty bunny!).

I've given Win8 all the chances in the world, but as MS seem determined to annoy developers by hiding the simplest of stuff behind 3 layers of s**t while at the same time lifting their skirt to tablets and mobile devices then I honestly don't see the point in continuing to fight what is a badly misjudged and poorly implemented mish mash of 7 and 8 when 7 is considerably better for developers.
People might like 8, I'm not knocking them, but I've been using operating systems since the early 80's (yes, sadly, I am that old) and very few have been as frustrating as 8 - it's not that it can't do the stuff I want, it's that it's hidden away making the whole experience disappointing and time consuming.
So, that aside, I can confirm that I am now on Win 7, although it was not without it's temporary problems. Let me explain...
I made a backup, switched UEFI off and put a USB key containing windows install into the machine. All is as normal, booting up hitting the setup, selecting the install location until I am greeted with a drive that has maybe 4 partitions on it, one of them being the Toshiba backup the rest being Win 8 and the UEFI/secure boot malarkey.
I deleted all the partitions except the backup one with the assumption I could then create a new partition and format it. Windows install was happy about removing partitions but it really didn't like creating new ones and formatting them. This left me in a state where I could boot from USB but I had no partitions on the machine (except the non-bootable backup).
So next step was to try and figure out what was going on. Sadly it's a 2 1/2" HD in the laptop so I couldn't just take it out and piggy back onto my desktop PC (3 1/2") instead I downloaded a copy of ubuntu, stuck it onto my stick, booted up from the USB and used gpart to view the partitions and to format them.
Bit annoying having to download a full OS just to get a HD partition tool and I am sure more Linux savvy people could knock up a bootable stick with just gpart on it, but still my sledgehammer/nut solution was exactly that, a solution.
So, Win 7 installer onto the stick again and away we go.. Now I can't remember if I formatted the drive as NTFS or FAT32 from ubuntu however now that the drive was partitioned and active then the Windows installer had no problems about reformatting (an empty) partition to match the format it needs. From there it was just a standard Win install.
Finally I downloaded the relevant drivers from this site and applied them. No SATA drivers were needed while installing Win7 but perhaps if they were present I wouldn't have needed to do the round about step of using Ubuntu to format/partition the drive. Either way, it's working now.
As for Win 8? A failed experiment in the same way Vista was and, like Vista to Win 7, I expect Win 9 to be to an improved Win 8.
Generally MS creates good OS's every second iteration. Win ME (bad), Win XP (good), Vista (bad), 7 (good), 8 (bad), 9 (? - we will see).

  • Subreport causing an extra blank space in PDF export of SSRS 2008 report

    Hi All,
I have a requirement of showing individual report and a Supervisor report.
In the individual report, I will run the SSRS report for a particular worker. In the supervisor report, I am supposed to show the report for each worker working under the supervisor.
I have created the individual report and it works fine(even when exported to PDF).
Now in order to create the supervisor report, I will get the supervisor ID which I broke into various individual ID's of workers working under the supervisor in DataSet and created a subreport which points to the Individual report. I embedded this subreport
in a Tablix and gave a group by on the ID so that for each ID, the report runs one time.
The issue that I am facing is that when I export the Supervisor report in PDF, after each page, I get an extra blank page.
The Supervisor report only contains the Tablix which has only one column containing the sbureport which points to the Individual report and a Header and footer and nothing else.
Still I am getting this extra page on PDF export. Please help on the same.

    Hi HiddenIdentity,
According to your description, you have a report to display subreport for each ID and you have set page break between each group instance. Now when you export the report into PDF, it generate an extra blank page between each group instance. Right?
In Reporting Services, Reports exported using PDF and Image are optimized for a book-like or printed experience where pages are a consistent size. Page breaks are inserted vertically and horizontally at specific locations within the report body. These specific
locations are determined by the page width and page height settings. Please see the following link:
Rendering Behaviors (Report Builder and SSRS)
In this scenario, when you put a sub report in a cell, the whole subreport body will be displayed in this cell. If the total width exceed the page width of a PDF page, the content will goes to the next page. That's it need two pages to render each subreport.
So please modify the subreport report size to make it as big as the tablix so that it can be rendered within one PDF page.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.
    Best Regards,
    Simon Hou
