"Bookmarking" without an LMS - Captivate 7

Hi,
I'm currently working on a module that will not be used with an LMS.  The module will be on a website for employees to take at their leisure, and we'd like them to also be able to stop and pick back up at the place they left off whenever.  There are a few catches to this:
1.  We'd like people to be able to pick up where they left off on their mobile device or some other device, not necessarily their work computer
2.  We can't input people's names or other possible identifiers, because this is for a government agency, and they are sensitive about identities (hence the no LMS thing)
Is there some way to do this through javascript inside the program?  Or even outside the program?  Would it be possible to generate a random variable for people to input at the beginning that would take them to the slide they left off on?  Or does anyone know of a widget for Captivate 7 that does this (not just for a bookmark on the same computer, but to be able to access the left-off slide from any device)?
I realize this is quite a tall order, so any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thank you.

I don't think you will find anything "stock" that will achieve what you are after as this request is quite extra-ordinary
In order to make this work you would need to use a database of some sort to store the "random user number" and their location. You would also need some type of interface in Captivate that will allow the user to get a "random user number" and enter this number again if they are returning to the course. This would most likely need to be a Captivate Widget and since you mentioned mobile it will need to be a Flash and HTML5 capable widget.
Perhaps it would be possible to skip the widget part and instead create a type of "login" form in PHP / ASP or whatever, which connects with the database and either gives the user a "random user number" or allows the user to enter the number to continue the project again. The login form should then retrieve the last location of the user and "inject" this back into Captivate using JavaScript.
It is uncharted territory but it should be possible.

  • Self-Paced Learning - Bookmark not working in Captivate 5

    I followed the directions of adding a Table of Contents to one of my captivate projects and selecting Self-Paced Learning in order to create a bookmark but this does not work.  I have saved it as Adobe Flash 9 and Adobe Flash 10 but I am not getting the message about starting where I left off when either refreshing the browser or exiting and going back in.  What am I missing?
    Thanks for your time,
    Brenda

    All slides in the presentation are marked as continue.  I have gone
    through the first 5 slides and when I refresh the browser or exit out of
    Internet Explorer and open the project again it just starts at the
    beginning.

    Hello Brenda,
    How did you check: after uploading to a LMS?
    You have to be aware of the fact that a slide will be marked as 'viewed'
    only when the playbar has played the whole slide till the end. If you do
    pause slides with a click box, button, TEB and attach the action 'Go to
    Next slide' or something similar instead of the default action 'Continue'
    this will not happen and the slide will not be marked as completed.

    Is there a way to store UserName entry without using LMS? I'd like to create ID and password..seemingly like a registration form in captivate..is this possible?

    If you're not talking about storing form field data in some external database (such as an LMS) then your next best option is to store it on the users machine as cookie data.
    However, Captivate doesn't provide such a mechanism out of the box.  Neither can you do it via Advanced Actions (though that would be an excellent enhancement to AA for Cp6).
    It's more the sort of thing that Captivate widgets were designed to do.

  • Exporting quiz results without an LMS

    We are able to administer Captivate quizzes directly through our database system without an LMS. We need the results to be posted back to the database upon completion of each quiz.
    Is this a PENS function? If so, how do we implement reporting results to the database? Our database developers can import the data in just about any format.

    Nope. PENS is for automatically uploading the SCORM-compliant .zip file to your LMS repository, if your LMS so allows.
    There's no way to do what you want *natively*. You have to hack the code to do this. If you've got smart JS programmers there, then you can likely do...
    When you publish a SCORM compliant file, it outputs an HTML and JS file. The functions in that JS file, as I recall, look for the LMS API and send various datasets to that API as the lesson calls other JS functions.
    Theory is you can edit that JS code to NOT look for and send to an API but send to a custom webpage/service instead... That webpage/service takes the data and sorts/stores it however you prefer.
    Search around a bit and you may find more detail. I think Andrew Chemey wrote a how-to for this process on Adobe's website somewhere, likely in the CP resources section?

  • I want to be able to open my favorite bookmarks without having to open firefox first

    When I had IE 9 I could send my favorites to a "tab" in the lower right hand corner called Links and I could open any one of my favorites without opening IE first. When I want to open a favorite bookmark from Firefox, I have to open Firefox first. Is there a way to save bookmarks without having to open the webpage first?

    The usual method may be to open Firefox with certain favourites as homepages, or to open Firefox with the tabs from the last session. It may be unusual to have 20-30 pages as a homepage. There may be some limit to the string length but you could try it.
    *[[How to set the home page]]
    Once Firefox is open you may also choose to open any folder in the bookmarks library and use the option open all tabs. If you wanted you could also open Firefox directly into the library as a tab.
    * use ''chrome://browser/content/places/places.xul''
    Additionally note that firefox handles tab groups (I seem to recall development of this feature has stopped and it may be replaced in the future)
    * [[Use Tab Groups to organize a lot of tabs]]
    *[[Mastering the Tab Group Editor]]
    If you do use tab groups please note they are not too robust. You could loose the sessions, it is a good idea to bookmark important tabs.
    Another workaround may be to use a document containing a list of the required links and open that document or a link from it with Firefox. I am not sure if there are any add-ons that do what you require, you could have a look.

  • Likert without an LMS

    Hello -
    I'm trying to create a basic training evaluation using a
    Likert scale and can get it to email the results to me but what it
    sends is just text:
    Core Data
    "Status","Location","Raw Score","Max Score","Min
    Score","Time"
    "completed","2","0","0","0","00:00:22"
    I want it to return the data in a format so that I can import
    results into excel or something to tally results.
    Working without an LMS to report back to :-(
    thanks!
    Karen

    Thanks Andrew!
    It is a bit more than I need however. Is there an easy way to
    modify the 'Core Data' that comes back in the email? I've moved
    away from the Likert project and into a complete/incomplete quiz
    project. Again I'm still without an LMS, it's almost like camping,
    I am 'roughing it' from a technical standpoint and trying to do as
    much as possible without many available tools :)
    Instead of receiving:
    Core Data
    "Status","Location","Raw Score","Max Score","Min
    Score","Time"
    "completed","2","0","0","0","00:00:22"
    Is it possible to receive:
    Core Data
    "Status"
    "completed"
    Eventually I will need to report scores also but we're just
    starting with baby steps for now.
    Your thoughts?
    thanks

  • Captivate not bookmarking with my LMS

    From what I've read, Captivate with an LMS should support
    bookmarking, and resume at the slide where a user closed the
    window. However, with our LMS (GeoMetrix TrainingPartner), this
    does not seem to be the case. I've uploaded some test SCORM2004
    movies with 12 slides, and no matter which slide I quit on, if I
    come back in it starts right back at the beginning. Is there a
    setting within Captivate I'm missing to turn on bookmarking? After
    searching the forums and the web, it seems like most people have a
    problem with Captivate bookmarking when they
    don't want it to, which is the opposite of my problem.
    PS - Yes, I've made sure that "Never send Resume Data" is
    unchecked. :)

    Only thought is I'm pretty sure you can make the
    modifications to the
    HTML javascript without worrying about the Actionscript.
    Sure, the CP
    file has Actionscript, but that largely calls and passes
    values to the
    SCORM JS functions in the parent HTML document. I'm pretty
    confident
    that Actionscript does not make calls to the SCORM API
    directly.
    I know that JS code is there as I've waded through it a
    couple times.
    It's a bit confusing but I am pretty certain that's where the
    direct
    SCORM API calls are generated, and thus is where you should
    be able to
    add the cmi.exit function.
    I defer on the resume/ab initio stuff as I'm not clear on it
    but,
    regardless, you're right - if CP is not setting the exit
    value to
    suspend (as I trust you're saying it should), then whether it
    sets 'ab
    initio' or 'resume' when it starts again seems irrelevant.

  • Captivate 4 - Bookmark feature for LMS

    I have completed all development of a course, but have just learned that a bookmark feature is required by the LMS. There must be a way for a User to begin the course then stop, and later be brought back to the same place.
    Is there a setting in Captivate where I can enable this feature?

    Does your CP-movie have quiz slides and if so, do you report to the LMS? Then you have to activate Resume Data, which is normally the standard option in the LMS Customization Setting (Quiz Preferences, Settings).
    When I'm not using the SCORM-functionality (reporting scores), I use the TOC-feature and activate the option 'Self-paced Learning' in the Settings, Runtime Options of the TOC, to have the bookmarking function. I'm certain there are other ways, perhaps someone else will give you another solution. If you do not want to lose any space on your screen you can put the TOC in overlay mode.

  • Storing multiple captivate quiz results, and then aggregating them without an LMS.

    I have 7 lessons that make up one course. Each of this lessons has a post assessment that determines if the user can go on to the next lesson. I need to collect these lesson scores separately, and then be able to get a course score. Right now I am using user variables to pass the scores through the course to the last lesson, here they are displayed on a results slide. My issue is that I cannot seem to get these scores to aggregate. I wrote a javascript function, which runs fine when I test it alone in a single lesson. But when I aggregate the lessons into one course the javascript no longer runs. I would eventually like to get these individual scores into a database as well, but for now fixing this is a priority. Here is a copy of my javascript. It is just taking the uservariables that hold points scored and points possible and adding them together. Pretty simple, but I'm not sure why it wont run when the project is aggregated. Any help would be appreciated.
    var mymovie = window.cpAPIInterface;
    var $quizresults1 =+mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults1");
    var $quizresults2= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults2");
    var $quizresults3= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults3");
    var $quizresults4= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults4");
    var $quizresults5= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults5");
    var $quizresults6= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults6");
    var $quizresults7= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizresults7");
    var $quizresultstotal = ($quizresults1 + $quizresults2+ $quizresults3 + $quizresults4 + $quizresults5 +$quizresults6 + $quizresults7 );
    alert( "you scored" + $quizresultstotal);
    mymovie.setVariableValue ("quizresultstotal", $quizresultstotal);
    var $quizpoints1= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints1");
    var $quizpoints2= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints2");
    var $quizpoints3= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints3");
    var $quizpoints4= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints4");
    var $quizpoints5= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints5");
    var $quizpoints6= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints6");
    var $quizpoints7= +mymovie.getVariableValue("quizpoints7");
    var $quizpointstotal= $quizpoints1 + $quizpoints2 + $quizpoints3 + $quizpoints4 + $quizpoints5 + $quizpoints6 + $quizpoints7 ;
    mymovie.setVariableValue("quizpointstotal", $quizpointstotal);
    -Drew H

    Yes, I am using the aggregator tool to combine multiple lessons into one course. When I test the last lesson, which contains the javascript, by itself it runs fine and adds all the totals and replaces the variable quizresulttotals with the result.The quiz values are still stored in a cookie for testing which is what makes this possible. But once the lessons are combined to create the entire course, the javascript seems to disappear. I even have alerts built into the script at each step for testing purposes and none of them show.

  • Bookmarking with video in Captivate 6

    I'm running into a problem that when I insert an flv video in one slide, if user in our LMS system exits partway through the video, the next time the user starts the training module the system does not bookmark where the user left off in the video, but begins the user at the start of the video. We're using SCORM 1.2. What is the trick to get bookmarking working within a video?

    Bookmarking in Captivate relates to the slide number only. Therefore it will always return to the last visited slide - not the last visited frame on that slide or the last viewed position in an external file (flv, mp4).

  • Is it possible for a module to remember last viewed slide and user interactions without an LMS?

    I am developing a captivate module (using Captivate 6) that can be run either off a local hard drive or web server (not an LMS).
    I am hoping that the user will be able to close down the module and then return to it at a later time. Considering the module will not be run via an LMS Is it possible for the module to remember not only the last slide that the user viewed but also any interactions that the user has conducted. For example: saved information in variables, image states (whether or not they have been clicked etc), widgets (I am hoping to use the drag and drop widget so I want the course to be able to remember what items they have dragged where).
    Is this possible? I know there is a bookmark widget that uses cookies to remember the last slide the user viewed. I am also aware of another widget that allows you to save variables for use between projects, but in this case I will only have one project file. Is there something out there that does everything I need?
    Does the 'self paced learning' checkbox in the TOC save user interactions?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Lilybiri. So it sounds like there is no easy way to save  interactions when run locally. Would using javascript (thats run when a user clicks a save button for example) be possible? Get the script to save a cookie with all the variables and 'states'? I know that saving the variables is possible because there is already a widget that does that, so wondering if there is a way to save the slide states as well (for example whether or not images have been clicked etc).
    Alternatively, if I create the project in captivate, is it possible to import into flash with all the functionality and actionscript intact and editable? From there I could then modify it to remember the saved states? (i am not proficient with actionscript  so just thinking of potential solutions).

  • Unable to BookMark or resume SCORM captivate projects

    We have created a number of flash e-learning modules using
    captivate 2, these have been published using SCORM 1.2 standards
    and imported using a manifest file into our LMS system (Essencia),
    this seems to work fine, it will happily launch the course, tracks
    any score (where there is a score) and records into the LMS
    database, the bookmark, the suspend data, and the lesson location
    data (although it seems that captivate is very very slow at passing
    this data back, any clues on speeding that up would help). When you
    back out of the course everything gets passed to the LMS as you
    would expect. When you re-enter the course the LMS passes to the
    course the suspend data and lesson location data, however the flash
    movie doesnt do anything with this at all ??? Hence the project
    starts from the begining every time, I have played with almost
    every setting but nothing makes a difference.
    The LMS company have used debugging tools to show the data is
    going back and forth, however nothing is happening with it.
    I did notice an option in the SCO under the manifest details
    for "launch data" nothing in the captivate literature shows how
    this should be used, but was wondering if somehow this alerts the
    module to the fact that data is going to be passed to it on launch.
    Now I know you can resume in captivate, as other members have
    mentioned how they would like to turn it off (boy I wish I had that
    problem), so does anyone have any ideas ? Or any indicator what the
    launch data is for ?
    Help..we have spent weeks on this

    Inquisiq has a free 30-day trial (inquisiq.com). I'd
    recommend trying
    your product there - many Inquisiq customers use Captivate
    content
    (though not sure use v1 vs. v2).
    ICS doesn't really appreciate people using their LMS free
    trial as a
    debugging tool but if you're seriously considering switching
    LMS
    products and the debugging can be called 'product research',
    that's not
    a problem!

  • How can I select more than one bookmark at a time so that I can then open multiple bookmarks -- without the aggravation of going back to the list and selecting and opening each one.

    From my dozens of bookmarks, I often would like to open 5 or 6 of them at once -- perhaps a couple of weather reports, a couple of radio stations, a couple of other websites. But I see no way of doing this without laboriously finding a bookmark, selecting it, opening the website, then returning to the bookmarks, finding the second bookmark, selecting it, opening the website, and on and on. Surely there's a way for me to select multiple unrelated bookmarks and open them at the same time. Thanks much for your help. Don

    Selecting, viewing, and searching the sidebars and library lists is explained in both articles previously mentioned.
    Multiple selection is something built-in to a lot of applications and into all browsers, and yes you guessed correctly the favicon it the thing to the left of the bookmark and that is what is is called in all browsers. And if you look at selection you will find that it matches what you asked for, especially if you were to do a search from the search bar on the bookmark or history sidebar. But there is also no problem opening up a single bookmark or history item into a new tab, with either Ctrl+click or Ctrl+Shift+click in the area to the right of the favicon either.
    However I would suggest making a change to your configuration options so the the same keyboard shortcut is used from a link and from your bookmarks. See those keyboard shortcuts in the following along with the footnotes just below the table for them in
