Books on digital photography and iphoto
Hi,
Looking for a Christmas present for my dad - he's just got his first digital camera (at the age of 87...) and a new Macbook.
I'm looking for a good book that will take him through the basics of taking pictures, then having fun in iPhoto. But every one on digital photography I've found so far seems to assume you'll be using Photoshop, and all the ones on iPhoto assume you can already take photographs!
Anyone know of any books that do the basics of photography and iPhoto in one?
The best feature of digital photography is that you can shoot as much as you like and delete poorly composed images.
Get a tripod for the camera and your dad can just start shooting away (after reading the camera manual).
After twenty shots his "aim" will improve. After 50 shots he'll start thinking of composition prior to shooting. After 100 shots he'll start making adjustments to the camera settings (off automatic).
Get some rechargeable batteries and a charger so he can swap bad for good. I use a great "15 minute" version from Energizer.
As for iPhoto and the new computer:
Buy a book if you think it will help
Or connect the camera to the new Mac and watch iPhoto gather them in.
Once in iPhoto he can make additional edits (probably not needed) and make a slide show. He'll be telling all his friends to get a Mac and a camera.
I'm not suggesting your dad is too old to learn and a good book at Christmas is a treat. But I'll bet he would like a good novel over a complicated subject as digital photography.
Play, shoot, capture and create. Life's too short to read a manual.

Lego digital camera and iPhoto
My seven year old son just got a Lego camera for his birthday. I plugged it into my Mac (10.6.4) and iPhoto '09 and the Lego camera doesn't show up.
I don't see anything in the forums regarding the Lego camera and I don't see anything in Google about the Lego camera and iPhoto.
Has anyone else gotten their 3MP Lego digital camera to work with iPhoto? My guess is that the camera is not Mac-compatible. A lot of inexpensive digital cameras use proprietary software to access the disks on the camera; the software is always PC-only. My daughter had a Disney camera that had the same issue. You might be able to get it to work using Parallels to run the PC software, otherwise you could use Boot Camp to put Windows on your Mac and then copy the pictures over.

Digital Imaging and iPhoto Advice
Please excuse me if this is posted on the wrong discussion section.
I am a brand new owner of a MacBook pro with Mavericks operating system and I am just trying to get my head around a few things.
Now, I have 5 years of digital images archived on an External Hard Drive and my question is, is there an App that will allow me to view all of my archived thumbnails on the ex Hard Drive a little easier than the default small thumbnail view on the macBook?
I dont really want to import the 5 years of archived images onto the MacBook to view through Iphoto as that will clog my computer up with lots of images.
Any views, help or advice as to the best way to view the archives?
PeterBy default iPhoto will import all your images into its own folder structure. that is something I think you should avoid. there is a setting in iPhoto to stop this behavior. It is in the iPhoto preferences on the Advanced tab.
Make sure that is unchecked and iPhoto will just make a database of your images and not copy them into its own folder structure.
Personally I think iPhoto is one of the worst image cataloging and editing programs. You would be much better off using something like Adobe Lightroom. -
Kodak digital camera and iphoto
Hello
I have a Kodak digital camera. When I connect it to my imac (osx 10.3 ilife 05) I photo comes up
Asks me if I want to import, and everything works fine except it never mounts on the desktop. I want to dome editing , copy back to the camera and then print photos on the Kodak printer.
Thanks fredI have that same camera but iPhoto was able to recognize it after downloading the firmware and Kodak EasyShare update. Does the computer recognize your camera at all, through another program like Image Capture? If so, then you might just need to go to iPhoto's preferences and check off the box about opening iPhoto (or any image application you prefer, like Photoshop) when the camera's plugged in. Good luck!
I seem to have the opposite problem on my system-- iPhoto now thinks my camera is always connected, even when it's unplugged and sitting in my bag. -
Connecting digital Camera and iPhoto 4.0

This setting is covered in the Preferences to Image Capture, in your Applications Folder.

Photo Sharpening - Scott Kelby's Tip in His Book - OK for RAW and JPEG?
Hello. Newbie here. In fact, I haven't even bought PSE yet but am thinking seriously about it. I'd like a quick tool for sharpening my Nikon D80 photos on my Mac. In his book "The Digital Photography Book" (volume one), on page 18, Scott Kelby gives a very concrete set of parameters for sharpening images in both Photoshop and PSE. My question is, can these parameters be used effectively on photos shot in JPEG as well as RAW images? My guess is "yes" since he doesn't say otherwise but I thought I'd try to check it out.
Precisely what Conrad Chavez says: a very good change.

Can anyne suggest a book on digital imaging for computer newbie?
Hi,
i have a friend who's a great amateur photographer - he know's his digital cameras / what makes a good shot etc.
He's just bought a new Macbook pro to take his digital photography a step further, he's joined a photography club, and everyone around him is talking about photoshop.
At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
I thought i could explain, and go on to subjects like printing etc. I found it very hard.
There's loads of stuff on the web, but this is a computer newbie, as i say. So it would be great if there was a handy book out there that could help out.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance,
nw9At the photography club he was asked to prepare an image for projection - 72dpi 720x1024...
If the image is for projection then the only specification he has to worry about is the dimension of the image, 1024 x 720. He just needs to crop/resize the image in Photoshop to 1024 x 720 pixels and save a copy. DPI does not come into play until you print an image. See The Myth of DPI .
I believe MacWorld offered several books on digital photography. You might search their site for them.

Question about what to buy for Pro Digital Photography
I do quite a bit of digital photography with high-end digital backs, was wondering if there would be a significant difference in buying a Mac Pro versus the 2.8 extreme or the 2.4 Imac with an equivalent amount of ram, say 4 gigs. The cost would be greater off course going the Mac Pro route including monitor etc. and less portable. And the expandability issue, which really isn't a problem since I use quite a bit of external drives.
Currently I'm using a first generation intel Imac 20' been having a few connection issues with the camera, not quite sure if it's software or hardware but still get good results with this machine.
I have never used a Mac Pro for this application so not sure if there truly is a mind blowing difference.
I like the portability of the Imac and the quick set up. Also I've heard some rumors about the glossy screen being an issue.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Much Thanks.
.I am also doing digital photography, and am in need of a new machine. My old MDD G4, just can't cut it, especially dealing with RAW images from my D300. If you are using digital backs, I would say that the extra horsepower of a Mac Pro would greatly speed your workflow. Not knowing your workflow, I would still say that the internal expandability would help make keeping images orderly a snap. Say one 4-500 gig drive for unedited raw image storage, another for final edited image storage, and a third or a partition as a swap space for photoshop (Raptor?). You could use an external firewire drive as a backup drive with time-machine. Just a suggestion.
As for a monitor, you get a Dell (I can't believe I said that) FPW2407 24" widescreen. They are just as good as the Apple Cinemas, but cost a lot less. With the cash you save, you can get a Spyder to calibrate it, if don't already have one.
I am waiting for my taxes to come back before I get one. I waited and waited and waited till I could not waits no more, and got a new Nikon body. I am looking at the 8-core 3.0 with the Nvidia 8800. I can get the ram from OWC.
As always, take everything I say with a salt-lick!

I'd like to create a Wedding Album 'Book' using iPhoto,
Thats the easy bit,,,,
I'd like then to distribute this 'book' in digital form (file or cd) to my windows based family and friends
Is this in any way possible?
1)Using iphoto or aperture?
2), Converting to a powerpoint file?
3) If not can i do the whole thing in windows, can anyone recommend a similar program that will allow this.
I want to end up with an album, similar to what iPhoto can produce,,,, But viewable in Powerpoint or similar viewer that can be on a CD to send to friends and family
Regards
GlynThanks for that Larry,,,
Yes, it sort of works, The pdf version doesnt display the book/page formatting which is what i was really after.
so i end up with pretty much just a slideshow in pdf.
anyways, i'll work with it,,, maybe i can convert direct from iPhoto into PowerPoint somehow ?
Thanks again

I am a Canadian staying in England for a few weeks. How can I get an iPhoto Book printed win England and sent as a gift to an English relative? With my account, it seems that Apple only allows for my book to be printed in Canada and then sent to my Canadian address..
in the iPhoto preferences change the print products country to the UK and give it a try - there may be some restirctions on billing but it has worked for some people

I have prepared an 82 page book on iPhoto, ready to buy. There is a message over about half the photos saying "drag photo to place in background" as if it doesn't see the photo already there. I have spent over 20 hours getting to this point and can't bear to start over! Its a Mac 08X 10.6.8 and iPhoto 08 7.1.5. I have made other iBooks on this software and computer with no problems. Help please!
Look for a page that has a similar layout:
The one photo per page layout is the easiest to miss. Just click on a background color to remove the problem.

I am trying to buy the book I created in Iphoto and it says I need to update iphoto. I have OSX Lion 10.7.5 and Iphoto 11 9.2.1. I don't know how to update. I tried to follow the suggested instruction by going to Mac App, clicking on update tab but nothing was found. I am not sure what to do. I have spent three days creating this book for a Christmas present and I am 5 hours from the closest Apple store. Can anyone help. I don't mind paying for upgrades if that is what is needed I just don't know what is needed or how to do it.
Thanks,
LindaYep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates. -
I'm creating a book from an album in iPhoto. I have downloaded the latest version of iPhoto. When I choose a book, i.e. wirebound, 19-20 page book, it shows a 42 page book when I am populating the pictures in the book I've selected. Is that because I have more pictures in the album?
In any case, I can't seem to manipulate/choose the number of pages I want. How can I stick with the 20 page book I want?
Thanks. You can not select the "number of pages" - you select the photos and the page layours and the number of pages comes form that - with Autoflow iPhoto uses random page layouts so the number of pages is rando=m
You can change layouts to include more photos, move photos to the pages with no empty photos frames and then delete the pages at the end after the photos are used elsewhere

I deleted my Iphoto and need to get it back! I bought this mac book off my sister and have none of the install disks. If there a download or something that I can get to reinstall it?
Depending on the age of your machine and the version of iPhoto, you may be able to download it from the App Store - but you'll need her account details to do so.
Other than that you'll need to purchase it on the App Store. -
Do I get confirmation that my Iphoto book is being produced and sent out?
I put together a photo book in Iphoto and submitted it. It went through all the rendering and processing. My credit card bill shows it was in the process of being charged, but there was no confirmation from Apple that my book will be produced and mailed out. Is this how it is suppose to happen?
Thank you,
