Boot Device Not Found Error Message

I've had my laptop since May 2011.  HP Pavilion dv6
Quad-Core AMD Phenom II 2.2 GHz
DDR3 SDRAM 8 GB
500 GB Serial ATA 7200 rpm hard drive.Originally Windows 7 64-bit upgraded to Windows 10 64-bit One morning I turned on my laptop and I received the following error.  The laptop lives on my desk, hasn't undergone any major changes, and I haven't moved or dropped it. I've run every diagnostic test from the F2 menu. The hard drive and memory both passed, the system tune up passed, and I've restored the BIOS to the default settings with no changes. If I hold the power button and restart the laptop usually on the 2nd or 3rd attempt the system will start normally with no issues and continue on as if nothing is wrong. This is a helpful work around but it doesn't solve the problem which is a bit of an annoyance and leaves me worried that eventually it might refuse to start at all. Thinking that a system restore might help I ran a recovery and brought it to an "out of the box" state. After that failed I decided to go ahead and upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I performed a clean install keeping none of my programs or personal files. Despite a successful Windows 10 install I still receive the same error every time I restart.  The short version:When I turn on my laptop I encounter a Boot Device Not Found Error Message. My hard drive passes diagnostic tests. My laptop will start eventually if I continue to power cycle it.

@pkharel ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  So that I can better help you here with this hard drive issue .  Can you explain what diagnostic you ran on the hard drive.
Did you run the diagnostics from the BIOS?
HP Notebook PCs - System Diagnostics (F2)
HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
If you have attempted the diagnostics from the BIOS and are not finding the Hard drive.  See if you can find the hard drive in another computer.  If you can not find it using another computer replace the drive.  If you can and it is not located on your notebook then you have a possible issue with the motherboard.
First thing I would do is try and restore your BIOS first.
Restoring the BIOS
After attempting this and you still can not find the Hard drive and you can see it in another system please contact HP phone support for repair options.

    Hi @Darren104
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I saw your post regarding the Boot Device not Found error message. This HP document Resolve Boot Device not Found Error Message will show you how to reset your BIOS. This will force the BIOS the look at the hardware and it might see your new hard drive. Another reason that it might not be seeing the hard drive is because there is no bootable operating system on the hard drive. You might need to look at taking it out and installing an operating system on it via another computer.

  • 3fo. boot device not found

Have hp elitebook 8470p.     Yesterday turned it and got error.  No boot device found   install an operating system      E. Thanks

Dear Customer, Welcome and Thank You for posting your query on HP Support Forum It looks like your Notebook is showing "No Boot Device Found" error messageWe will surely assist you with this issue This error message also means that the hard drive is so dead, that the notebook doesn't even know it has one installed. You need to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. If you intend to repair the PC, try removing and reseating the hard drive before buying another one. Maybe the contacts are loose or oxidized The "Hard Disk [3F0] / Boot Device not found" Error message could be because of 3 things as shown below: 1. The Hard Drive or the Partition Structure of the Hard Drive could be corrupted or bad2. We need to check if the Hard Drive Data Cable which connects to the System Board has gone faulty or not. If yes we need to replace the Hard Drive Data Cable3. Bad SATA Controller on the System Board replaces the System Board or Notebook To start with please check if you are able to access BIOS to test the Hard Drive Please Click on the below shown link to perform the Hard Drive Testhttp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00439024&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3816360&tmp_track_link=ot_search#N32 If you are unable to access BIOS please remove the Hard Drive and then try to access theBIOS again. Once you remove the Hard Drive boot the Notebook again and press F10 to access the BIOS. If you are able to access BIOS then the Hard Drive is bad Please perform the below shown step if required:Remove the Hard Drive from you Notebook and test it out on a different Notebook. Incase if you are still getting the same error that confirms the fault with Hard Drive Incase if the Hard Drive works normal on a different Notebook please contact HP to get your Notebook diagnosed by an HP Certified Engineer Note: Just to let you know most of the Notebooks have the Hard Drive & SATA Cable built in which cannot be replaced unless we replace the whole Notebook You can Check your warranty Here to verify the status and Click Here to order a new Hard Drive  Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,K N R KAlthough I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

  • I'm receiving error Boot Device Not Found and Hard disk not exist when I boot up my laptop

I'm receicing the error Boot Device Not Found when i power on my HP G60-235DX laptop.  After following HP's recommended troubleshooting steps, I receive error Hard disk not exist.  Hmmmm....that's a little concerning.  My guess is I need a new hard drive?    I have the 17 recovery disks I made when I setup this laptop, however I'm not sure if they will resolve this issue.  Any suggestions?

One of 3 things has happened, listed from most likely to least likely
    1. Hard drive has died, replace it with one of the same size or larger, then use the HP recovery discs to re-install windows.
2, The motherboard has serious problems. (Replace the notebook)
    3. The hard drive cable that connects it to the motherboard has somehow failed, not very likely. (replace the cable)
Replace the hard drive with a new one and use your recovery discs to get Windows back on it.
Here is your service manual, will show you how to replace the hard drive

  • HP Device Not Found Error when trying to print or scan wireless- HP Officejet Pro L7590

Have had HP Officejet Pro L7590 All-In-One Printer for years.  Always worked fine and I had no issues printing via wireless connection.  Several months ago..  Possibly after a Windows 8 update.  From Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 I have not been able to use the printers wireless feature.  When I try to print or scan it shows the printer as offline.  Also get an error message that tells me "HP Imaging device is not found".  I can still print when connected to USB.  Cannot scan or use features of the HP software suite.  I have tried several times to correct.  Reloading the software and drivers several times, but no success.  I just tried again and was able to print the test page wireless, so got all excited and thought I fixed it.  Then tried to print something and got the same error message I have seen in the past.  I have talked to certain supports saying that it may be a firewall setting within Windows.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks

Uninstall the software again - Uninstall the Printer Software Instructions

Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
    In the Open box, type

    and then click OK.

    In the Open box, type

  • Boot device not found. "Hard disk not exist". windows not booting

    Product: HP G72-110SA
    OS: Win7
two days ago, I was installing updates on my computer and when it was about to restart, it froze. After waiting for 10 minutes, I had to turn it off by pressing the off button. From then on, the computer turns on but shows a message "Boot device not found".
I have tried all the BIOS tests that I could find on the net for the hard disk, eg: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01443465&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=uk&dlc=en&la...
This gives me a "Hard disk not exist" error. I tried resetting the BIOS, that didn't work. I tried taking out and putting back in the battery, the memory and the hard disk. Still no luck.
I then booted ubuntu from cd on the computer. It works just fine, including the internet etc EXCEPT the HDD is still not detected.
I had some pretty important stuff and no back up, so would appreciate if someone can help me get back the data. If not, even if I know its just a HDD failure and not a motherboard/BIOS problem, it will be a relief as its probably fixable.
    Thanks

    Hi there ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I would be happy to assist you. As there are many models of HP Notebooks, I would need the model number. (How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?) When I went to www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup, it gave me documentation and troubleshooting steps to follow. One of the documents it provided is called Hard Disk Error Displays before the Computer Starts. NOTE: I recommend at this point you make an immediate backup of all important data and files. Here are instructions on how to Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8). Please follow the troubleshooting steps provided, re-post with the results of the troubleshooting in detail. Thank you.

  • HP Pavilion dv-4087CL Notebook receiving : Boot Device Not Found-Please install an operating system

My Duaghter is out of the country studing abroad.  Her PC would no longer boot up so she took it to a support shop. They replaced her hard drive, fixed an over heating issue and reloaded her PC.  Now she is getting this new error message and she is desparate to get this fixed.  We have owned this PC for only 2 years. I am sure it is out of support.
HP Pavilion dv-4087CL Notebook receiving : Boot Device Not Found-Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
She took it back to the support shop and they upgraded her bios, but that did not fix the error message.
Please help!  What can she do  now.

    Hi:
Normally that means the hard drive failed.
I know it was replaced but maybe the replacement drive went out too.
There is a hard drive diagostics tool your daughter can run in the BIOS.
I suggest she run it (enter the BIOS by tapping the F10 key as soon as she sees the HP welcome screen).
Then once in the BIOS, there should be a diagnostics menu..one for memory and one for the hard drive.
She should select the hard drive diagnostics application and see what it reports.
Then go from there based on what is reported.

    1.  The full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook - see Here for a further explanation.
    2.  The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 32bit ).
    3.  Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
