Boot partition corrupted on encrypted install, trouble repairing GRUB
Long story short, my boot partition got thoroughly messed up. I have an encrypted install with luks and dm-crypt. I have tried many guides for fixing grub and none are working.
Here is where I'm running into trouble:
I've booted an arch install cd, modprobe'd dm_crypt, mounted my encrypted root with cryptsetup, run arch-chroot, mounted the boot partition to /boot, run grub-install /dev/sda, and then grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
When running grub-mkconfig I get 12 instances of "WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad: No such file or directory. Falling back to internal scanning." followed by "done". Upon reboot I am met with the grub prompt.
Any ideas?
OK. Well the wiki is usually more up to date and more accurate. However https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot says it is OK to mount them after just simpler and safer to do so before.
I am not surprised grub is unhappy - it doesn't seem to have any entries at all in grub.cfg. I guess it doesn't even give you a menu? (I am not sure how it would make one.)
Did you remember to reinstall the linux package before generating grub.cfg? That's the only thing I can think right now would cause it to just find nothing at all. I've seen it generate entries which wouldn't work but it is acting as if there is nothing there whatsoever. What is the contents of /boot? (Not everything under /boot/grub. Just the top level.)
EDIT: I only asked what happened to /boot in case it suggested any deeper problem. "Corruption" could mean hardware failure, for example. Just wiping it is not that bad . Seen much worse lately, anyway. (You could have run it on / or /home, after all.)

/boot partition necessary for arch install on macbook
I am going to be installing arch on my macbook( will be first attempt at this), and I was wondering if I definitely need a /boot partition, or will just having a / and /home partition work?
Also, I will still have OS X SL installed. So the partitions will be like this:
EFI
OS X
/home
So....? /boot ..... definitely do need it or do not need it ? Thanks for any and all replies. What jakobm said. I'm triple-booting right now, so I only have 1 partition for arch, mounted as /. Have to use a swap file. Everything is smooth and awesome. If I were you, I'd have a / partition and a swap partition. Unless you really want a separate /home partition that badly.

I tried to make my windows 7 partition bigger but it corrupted the boot bios, but now I cannot get windows to recognize an installer disk or repair disk, (ive tried all related booting commands IE C/alt and some others, will i have to re-install windows?
Nah but I didn't have any important files on there (at all) so I just rebuilt it, took me a while due to some difficulties in the mac OSX disk being scratched but I got there, but thanks anyways .

Partition Corruption after Update Install
The last two times I've attempted to run an Apple software upgrade installation I've ended up with my Hard disk partition getting hosed and having to repartition (and OS reinstall). Has anyone else have this problem?
BTY: In both cases the software upgrade failed to run successfully, the last time it failed in the OS 10.4.9 upgrade. Thanks Hal.
I thought I could delete, but wasn't confident.
I have deleted them and no problems :-) -
Boot Camp drivers won't install on Windows 7
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro (10.10.2 Yosemite), and just installed Windows 7 (64-bit) via Boot Camp. It works fine but I am unable to install any of the drivers (version 5.1.5621). I put them on a flash drive but when I open Drivers/Apple/BootCamp, it says the program can not be run, check your bit version for compatibility (something like that)... I then try the troubleshoot way but this is what happens-
Thanks for the help. Please verify that you have the correct drivers using System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support and install or repair using setup.exe in the BC folder.

[SOLVED]Should /boot partition be formated in ext2 or ext4?
I used to format /boot partition in ext2 when installing Arch Linux.
Can /boot partition be formatted in ext4?
Is there any advantage when using ext4 over ext2 in /boot ?
I heared that ext2 is more stable than ext4.
Last edited by yuanzhi (2012-12-22 06:01:10)You can use anything you like for a separate /boot partition, provided both Linux and your boot loader can read it -- ext2, ext4, XFS, HFS+, FAT, etc. Some of these filesystems do have limitations, though. For instance, since FAT doesn't support symbolic links, you can't do something like link a kernel with a generic name to one with a more specific name. I've seen some configurations that rely on such things, and they wouldn't work with FAT.
As to ext2fs vs. ext4fs specifically, ext4fs won't have many advantages; its journal and other advanced features will be of little importance on such a small partition. Ext4fs might be a tiny bit faster, especially if you've got an EFI-based system and are using the EFI filesystem drivers, but this effect will usually be so small that it qualifies as negligible. I'm not sure about reliability, but I'd expect that any reliability problems with ext4fs would be pretty well eliminated by now.
Personally, I've been using ext2fs on most of my systems' /boot partitions until recently. I've begun using FAT or ReiserFS more recently, but only because I'm using EFI and am loading my kernels off of these partitions. In this environment, FAT is better because it's the EFI's native filesystem, and ReiserFS has a speed advantage over ext2fs or ext4fs because of quirks of the add-on EFI drivers for these filesystems. These are rather specialized reasons to favor these filesystems, though. FWIW, Fedora, which uses a separate /boot partition by default, has been using ext4fs on its /boot for a while now. -
[SOLVED] Setting default boot partition on Macbook Pro w/ no dual boot
I'm trying to install Arch on a new Macbook Pro 13", but I fear I've become somewhat confused by all the instructions in the wiki.
I have no interest in dual booting, so I left the mac's existing boot and recovery partitions alone and set up a new filesystem and boot partition. I installed rEFInd on the new boot partition and ran refind-install successfully. Installing Arch seemed to go perfectly as well.
My issue is that when I reboot the computer, it still tries to boot from the original boot partition, which fails because OS X is no longer installed. Does anyone have anyone idea how I boot from the rEFInd partition instead?
Last edited by whitebrice (2015-05-31 04:31:21)Thanks for the quick reply. I tried deleting the original boot partition, but I still had my problem. I ended up wiping all the existing partitions and trying again with gummiboot instead of rEFInd. It works now.

Data recovery from corrupt boot partition
The boot partition on my MacBook running 10.7.6 has a corrupt volume structure and will not mount, much less boot. The recovery partition boots but really doesn't let me do anything. Disk Utility can't repair nor even complete verification. I have lots of images which I need to recover, so am looking for a utility which might help.
Everything was apparently ok until the failure and the drive hardware checked out ok, so I'm hopeful my files are recoverable. A week or so ago I optimized the volume with TechTool Pro and the directory with DiskWarrior, and last night attempted to sync 1Password on my iPad with 1Password for Mac. This did no t work, probably because of my unfamiliarity with the procedure, but seemed to do no damage. When I ran TTPro last night from its eDrive partition it reported a volume structure problem on the partition which I started to fix with the program but then cancelled the analysis and decided to use disk utility instead. Disk utility also reported a problem but stopped the verification with the instruction to do a repair which it again could not complete. When I rebooted the system partition would again not boot but this time I got grey screen with a message that the debugger had loaded and <panic>. A message box said power down and restart, but that only repeats the process.
I'm thinking of attempting to install a system on an external boot drive and accessing the corrupt partition with a data recovery utility. Any insights, ideas or shared experiences appreciated. Thanks in advance for any desperately needed help. The safest thing to do here is to install a new disk in the system and do a clean install of OS X. From there, you can put your corrupted volume in an external USB enclosure and mount the file system to try and recover as much data as you can.
It's likely obvious now, but it's REALLY worth investing in a large-capacity external storage or Time Capsure to use with Time Machine. Backups are essential. Hardware always eventually dies. We all need an effective strategy to deal with that.
A long time ago, I was backing my Linux system up to 4mm DAT. When the inevitable HDD crash came, I thought I was ready. Unfortunately, I hadn't tested recovery from tape and I ended up losing everything. Which is to say, until you know you can restore, you don't even have a backup. I lost thousands upon thousands of photos of my kids growing up.
BTW, if it is essential that you recover as much as possible, consider taking the disk to a data recovery service. Be warned: It's expensive. -
HD corrupt, disk utility can't repair it. can't boot.
I have a early 2009 iMac with the latest Mountain Lion update (did the last update two days ago). My HD has two partitions: one for os x and one for windows with bootcamp. I'm curently writing using the windows partition where everything works fine.
Yesterday I started my mac on X. Same gray loading screen but it had a small bar on the bottom. When the bar reached nearly half, the mac shut down. This happens now every time I try to start the mac on X and if I keep pressed ALT to choose which partition to use, the one for X is called "EFI Boot".
I booted in recovery and later using a snow leopard dvd, and I used disk utility. It said "invalid index key" and that the volume needed to be repaired, but disk utility couldn't repair it.
I tried rEFIt to check if there were problems with the partitions: all ok.
I tried the fsck console command: all ok.
Now I'm in the windows partiton and if I navigate through the X partition (I have MacDrive installed) I see that some files are missing. I'm sure they should be there, but they're nowhere to be found.
Of course MacDrive tells me that the volume is damaged, etc...
What can I do?What files are missing?
Might try this...
Just recently I ran into a problem when I tried to Verify my hard disk and when it tried to verify the catalog, it responded "Invalid sibling link." Repair Disk didn't work. I searched the web and Apple's site, and couldn't find anything useful except to buy DiskWarrior or reformat the drive. Knowing that OS X is built on Unix gave me a few clues on how to proceed. The solution is pretty simple:
1. Boot off the OS X CD (reboot, hold C while booting).
2. The installer will load up, go to Utilities in the menu and run Terminal.
3. Type df and look for the drive that has your Mac system mounted---you'll have to unmount this. On my MacBook Pro, it was /dev/disk0s2.
4. Type umount /dev/disk0s2, replacing disk0s2 with whatever disk your OS lives on.
5. Type fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2. If you umounted the wrong thing, it will complain that you can't repair a mounted drive. Go back and umount the right thing and repeat this step.
Just for fun, you might want to run another fsck_hfs on your disk (use the -f option because your drive is probably journaled). Hope this helps someone so they don't buy a program that's going to do pretty much what we did with fsck_hfs, and so they don't waste time searching for an answer to no avail. By the way, TechTool Deluxe (3.1.1) didn't find the Catalog problem for some reason (you'll have this on a CD if you have AppleCare), which is why I resorted to fsck.

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing. Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!
Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.
Good luck,

I am having trouble trying to boot from my lion osx install disk on a 2007 macbook. The disk ejects when I start up with the option key depressed. Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you.How did you get a Lion OSX install disc? They don't exist. Do you mean the gray disks that came with your 2007 MacBook?
If you mean the gray disks, try starting up with the "c" key held down.
What version of OSX is on your MacBook now? Have you tried booting from the Recovery partition? -
Grub-install fails to install core.img to boot partition
I am trying to reinstall Arch onto a Dell Precision T3600 workstation, where it used to work fine, but I am stuck at the booloader step.
Details:
1. I have only one disk, partioned with gpt.
2. I am using Grub with Bios
3. As per installation instructions (preliminary requirements, BIOS systems), I created a 1007KiB boot partition at the beginning of the disk, of type ef02.
The partition (which is umber 5 in my partition table) goes from sector 34 to sector 2047
4. I mounted the root partition to /mnt, arch-chroot'd into it, and ran
# grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck --debug /dev/sdx
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
5. I generated the /boot/grub.cfg file with the recommended
# grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Results:
when I try to boot, grub starts, but it cannot find anything to boot from and drops me into its shell.
Furthermore (this may be unrelated), when I take a look at the dis again (after rebooting from the install disk), I see that the gpt partition table is corrupted. Exact message from gdisk is:
Caution: invalid backup GPT header, but valid main header: regenerating backup header from main header:
Partition table scan:
MBR: protective
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: damaged
Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong? The Installation manual is not very explicit on how to deal with the (very small) boot partition. Is grub-install supposed to create the core.img file even when the partition is not mounted? Or should it be mounted. It certainly cannot contain eveyrthing that goes into /boot (which is over 100Mb).
Thanks for the helpHead_on_a_Stick wrote:
Your partition table is corrupted; you could clear it using:
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sd<x> bs=512 count=1; sync
Then use gdisk to recreate your partition table and re-install.
Alternatively, you could ask gdisk to re-create the backup GPT header from the main header: start up the program & press "r" followed by "d".
I had already fixed the partition table exactly as you suggested---sorry for not having been clear. It still does not boot.

I tried partitioning my HD to install linux, the installion was not successful and now I can't boot my mac, I tried internet recovery, it was not helpfull as the disk utility cannot delete the partition I created. It was only showing me an error message "EFI files are missing", I realized that it is trying to boot from the new partition I created for the installation of the linux I intended to do.
It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

/boot partition on USB disc for encryption scheme
Hello archers!
i have recently embarked on a project to create a fully encrypted harddrive with the boot routine entirely on a USB pen, as described in this guide
http://linuxreviews.org/howtos/security … ex.html.en
Now, seeing as Loop-AES is not supported in arch, it would mean i'd have to rebuild util-linux amongst other things, and it would be a hassle to maintain. I have taken a look at the dm-crypt + LUKS approach on the wiki, and i was wondering if it was possible to move the /boot partition to the USB pen along with a keyfile and the nessecary routines to make it boot? And if i can, could anyone give me some pointers as to how?As I have done exactly that - yes.
(well, with CF cards and not USB pen, but since the controller is USB it's technically the same)
First, prepare the USB stick.
- zero it: 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX (<- careful here!) bs=4M'
- put a partition on it; I used cfdisk, normal Linux type 83, and marked it bootable (not really necessary, but hey ;)
- put a filesystem on it; I used plain Ext2 minus all the fancy new stuff (no journal, no 256-byte inodes, no resize_inode, no dir_index, no reserved blocks...)
- make it bootable; I used Grub and had a hard time until I finally got to the normal Grub menu, but I don't remember why ... sorry ^.^
On the topic of Grub, you need a menu.lst:
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 cryptkey=/dev/disk/by-uuid/<UUID-of-Ext2fs-On-UsbPen>:ext2:cryptvg.key cryptdevice=/dev/disk/by-uuid/<UUID-of-Encrypted-RootDisk>:vg root=/dev/mapper/vg-root ro radeon.modeset=1 # okay, KMS is a bit off-topic... :p
initrd /kernel26.img
That's already full-featured, as my setup uses a keyfile instead of a passphrase, and it's an LVM-on-LUKS setup.
Scrap the "cryptkey=..." if you want to input a passphrase on boot.
You really want to use the UUID scheme and for that, 'blkid' is your friend.
Next up is the initramfs, so edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.
I tend to keep it minimal (my CF card is not exactly huge - 8 MB ;-) so only the really required modules and hooks:
-> MODULES="intel-agp radeon ehci-hcd usb-storage ext2 sd_mod ahci jfs"
The first two because I want early KMS, the next two to recognize the USB reader, ext2 to read the keyfile, sd_mod is mandatory and you'd have to modify the last two for your setup - type of IDE/SATA controller and root filesystem
-> CRYPTO_MODULES="aes-i586 xts"
Pretty straightforward - you can simply omit the line, the image will just get a bit larger
-> HOOKS="base consolefont udev encrypt lvm2"
Simple again - you always want "base+udev", it's LUKS encrypted and in there lies the LVM stuff; "consolefont" just in case, so you have the same keyboard layout as in /etc/rc.conf right from the start.
-> COMPRESSION="lzma"
8 MB CF card, remember? >.<
Now rebuild the image: 'mkinitcpio -p kernel26' (or specify its location directly with -g)
Last but not least put the /boot stuff (minimum: System.map26, vmlinuz, kernel26.img and the grub/ dir) on the stick and have fun rebooting! :-p
You also might want to read the relevant wiki article a few times more, just in case.
And one final note: I didn't do this with a fresh install, but converted an existing Arch setup to LUKS+LVM after getting a new machine, so I can't say how this would work together with the current installer.
