Bootable external drive file removal query.

How do I remove all the stuff from a bootable external drive that require permissions I don't have? Thanks.

The Sharing and Permissions are greyed out. When I unlock the padlock I can only check the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" - Will this do what I want? I am using Tidy up and do not want to delete everything (using for eg.  Disk Utility) ... I just want to get rid of much of what I cannot get rid of. Hope that makers sense. Thanks.

  • Create Full HD Backup to encrypted bootable external drive

I have used SuperDuper to copy my internal HD to a bootable external drive configured with a 300 GB partition. Now I want to go one step further by creating that same backup but this time I want my external data to be encrypted for added security. I do not care if the OS and Applications files are encrypted as long as I can encrypt my home folder.
    1) Does SuperDuper have an encryption feature?
If yes, how do you activate it?
    2) If not, can I accomplish what I want using a Macbook Pro utility e.g. Disk Utility and perhaps
    turn on FileVault?
    3) Can I simply just turn on FileVault encryption and use Finder to drag my internal HD to external?
If yes, will my external drive now be bootable still?
    Thanks in advance.

Turn on Filevault, then use SuperDuper.

  • Need help repairing bootable external drive permissions

I, like some of the other posters I have read, have messed up the permissions on a bootable external drive.
I don't have direct access to my home computer right now so I set up an external bootable copy of my personal account, so I can basically run a copy of my own personal computer from anyone elses mac. And when I get back home I will be able to copy back across any new files.
The set up was working great till I realized that my external drive was completely readable, and writeable by anyone who turned it on as a peripheral disk while logged in on the main computer if the computer was booted up on it's own startup disk.
If my external was set as the startup disk, then my password and account kept everything secure.
So anyway, not really knowing what I was doing I, using the show info command, changed the group permission for the whole disk/volume from admin to my username. Now unfortunately I cannot startup using my external disk; the whole system goes straight to Kernal. And all my files are still totally assesible to any one logged in on the computer using its own start up disk.
Can you help me with the commands, to first repair the group permission so my disk is bootable again, then second so that I can prevent anyone with out my password access to any files on the disk?
    Thanks alot!

On another machine, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, select your drive in the list of disks, and then click on the Repair Permissions button; other solutions are available if this doesn't work.
Your two goals are mutually exclusive; there is no way to restrict access to an entire disk to yourself while maintaining the ability of that disk to boot Mac OS X. Your home folder can be protected in this way by changing the permissions on the item inside /Users/ with the house icon, or by turning on FileVault in the Security pane of System Preferences.

  • Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up.

Holding down the option key when booting my iMac lo longer shows me my bootable external drives, the system just boots up to the main system. Also, holding down command, option,P,R no longer zaps the p-ram. the system just boots up normally. Why do these key fonctions no longer work?

It could be your timing if on a bluetooth keyboard.  I find it best to hit the keys as soon as i hear the chime, release and hit them again but this time holding them before the chime ends....like a fake pump in football.
But....you can always open up system preferences, startup disk, and select your bootable clone for booting.  If it doesn't show up there, the Mac doesn't think it's bootable.

Corrupted files on the HD. Input/output errors might require erasing and reformatting the HDs. See http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html for more info. BTW, there's no recycle bin on a Mac, only a trash can and the containers are referred to as Trash.

  • Partitioning bootable external drive.

I just ordered a 2 TB Mercury Elite-AL Pro Qx2 Desktop RAID setup from Other World Computing (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEQX2T2.0S/) and would like to create a partition for Snow Leopard on this external drive. I plan to use the drive in a RAID-5 configuration, primarily to serve files for video and audio. The Snow Leopard partition that I would like to put on this drive is mainly to use for testing and troubleshooting my iMacs and Macbook Pro, and for a bootable drive in the event of a drive failure on one of my Macs. Can anyone tell me how large the partition should be and the best way to set this up? Thanks

I am already using a Time Capsule for backups. I have over a year's worth of backups on the TC. Yes, I could clone the internal HD, but it is 750 GB and >would require the purchase of another drive.
I see. The size of a clone is related to the space used on the drive rather than the drive size.
Besides, current iMac is going to be replaced by one of the new i7 Quad core machines with a 2 TB HD. I am buying the RAID solution to have redundancy of important files and primarily HD video, audio, and RAW image files. What is the >advantage of cloning when I'm already using the Time Machine/Time capsule.
You might as well wait until you get the new machine. Personally, I don't trust TM very much. There are a variety of cases where it fails to do the desired job. A clone is much less likely to be a problem.
I suppose clone would allow a rapid rebuild of the internal drive, but only as a snapshot of a given period of time when it was made. I read some recent reports of some Time Capsules dying after 16-18 months, which is really disconcerting. Apparently there are some bad power supplies out there on some units. That is >what got me thinking about additional ways to protect my data.
I like TM because it provides the opportunity to restore to different dates, but, as indicated, I am not impressed with its reliability. A clone, on the other hand, is, IMO, very reliable. And, using, for example, SuperDuper one can make incremental clones (which really shortens the time required for subsequent cloinings) and schedule clonings. The best procedure, I think, is to use both TM and clones (ignoring also having an off-site backup). I use both, but they are on different drives. So, you may want to get that additional drive.

  • Error 36 and External Drive File Copy Problem & USB Connections

In attempting to copy a folder with some 200G+ of files from my iMAC, with OSX 10.6.7, to an external portable WD 1Tb HD, newly formatted to HFS+ (journaled), and connected to the iMAC via a USB cable to the USB port on the iMAC keyboard, I kept getting an error message that Finder could not complete the operation as some data couild not be read or written and transfered, and gave the "Error Code -36". After some searching ont he internet for this error code I came across a host forums discussiong the error code BUT all referred to it being the result of MAC OS hidden "dot-underscore" companioned files being created when the MAC OS X file system copies or moves files to a FAT16 or FAT32 volume. This was not the situaion in my case a both drives were OS X formatted HFS+. Eventually I came across a very vague reference to the error also occuring when the cable connection with the external HD was not solid. I reconnected my external HD and attempted the file transfer again - with the same result. Eventually I decided to plug the external HD into a USB pot on the back of the iMA itself, rather than the keyboard set. Sure enough the error issue disappeared - the transfer successfully completed.
So my question relates to the "usb connection" challenge with iMAC. the iMAC has only 4 USB ports on the back directly. I did have two desktop external HDs plugged into 2 of these USB ports at the back of the iMAC, as well as a WACOM pad device into the 3rd, and an EPSON 3880 printer into the 4th, and so was forced to employ the ports ont he keyboard for portable HD. So - what's the answer in a situation where the 4 are insufficient and it would appear that the keyboard ports seemed to be unpowered?? Any suggestions?

It's actually a Time Machine backup drive which is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I wish I'd copied the exact error message.
I believe it was something to the effect of "Error 36: The file could not be copied because some of the date could be be read/written" or something along those lines. Next time it comes up I'll copy it. I have Drive Genius running with DrivePulse, but it doesn't ever seem to start.
My biggest concern is that this is a sign that the drive is failing. When backing up, it also slows, or stops midway through and just hangs there. Though I haven't done a lot of extensive testing on that because if the drive is failing, I don't want to speed that process up any more.
To add to the complication, there is a second external drive which Time Machine is also backing up for me. There is one particular file, the Virtual Machine file, I was trying to get off the other external drive and it produced the same problem. That's when I went into Time Machine to try and retrieve the file that way and it did the same thing. The other external drive is making some sounds, but it doesn't sound like a distinct clicking, more like a more pronounced version of the normal constipated hard-drive sound. The Time Machine drive, isn't making any obviously strange sounds at all.
So, I can't tell whether the drives are failing or if it could actually be that particular file itself causing some strange problems.

  • Problems with linking iPhoto to external drive files

In order to back up my iphoto albums, I mistakenly put the original files on an external drive rather than dragging the iphoto icon to the external drive.  Now I cannot directly open those files located on the external drive from iPhoto on my laptop. I tried linking to the drive (pressing alt/opt when opening iPhoto and selecting the external drive), but iPhoto on my laptop won't read it.  I don't have enough space now on my internal drive to drag all the originals from the external drive back to iPhoto and then drag them properly to the external drive.  I could do the file "reference" option, but everyone seems to recommend against that since it potentially complicates future actions.  What do you recommend for making iPhoto on my laptop properly read the original files now placed on an external drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Richard

If this was a Managed Library then your only solution is to put things back exactly where they were.
The Referenced option means starting over from scratch. If you're going to do that, might as well start over as a Managed Library.

  • Bootable external drive issue ... help please

I installed os x lion in 2 different partitions on a WD external hd. I can boot from it fine on my mac book pro i7, but when I try to boot from it on my imac, they are not an available option when i hold down the option key to choose where i want to boot from. however when i boot regularly ... they WD hd shows up as external drives ....
    any clue ?

Which machine created the bootable cloen the MBP or the iMac,? My guess is you used the MBP which is why it won't work on the iMac. To create a bootable clone for the iMac use the iMac to create the clone.

  • Read my external drive files with Apple TV

    Hello,
I just got yesterday the latest version of Apple TV and I am looking to be able to read files using Apple TV on my external drive, including MP3 and video files.  I'm a novice with iTunes and Apple products and I'm on Windows 7 with my computer.
Can anyone help me?  My 1st goal is to keep everything on my external drive to avoid filling my hard drive.
    Thanks for the help.

What you need to do is add media files to itunes from the external drive 'by reference' which will note where they are but not copy then to the internal hard drive.
Please note these files have to be in the correct format (h264) or they won't stream.  If they're not you'll have to convert using something like Handbrake.
To add files 'by reference' change irtunes Preferences > Advanced tab and untick the box which talks about copying to iTunes when added.

  • Windows on external drive files

I read on dualbootguru.com that with a properly reformatted windows disk, it is possible to install windows on an external drive. However, the re-formatting process of this disk is extremely complicated. Does anyone one have pre-formatted files to download to save me a few hours? Thanks.

    Thanks for your help.
I opened the html but its contents are only available as a web page, so at least they're not lost (thank you!) and I can theoretically access the bookmarks.
However, accessing bookmarks this way is really impractical since I won't know if the bookmarks toolbar has the info I seek or not. This means opting to use the webpage excusively as the more complete of the two, meaning loss of the bookmarks toolbar functionality .
I want to be able to use the toolbar exclusively, which means finding a way to restore the 2yrs worth of bookmarks now missing from it due to corruption of the most recent backup json file.
Is there a way to display the html bookmarks backup as toolbar objects?

  • Backing up to an external drive--files go unrecognized

I have a professor at a University with the following problem. Within Leopard he copies the entire "movies" folder which includes the imovie project files and the raw video and audio clips via usb to an external drive. The imovie subscript disappears and therefore the project files will not open. Anyone seen this?
    Thanks.

Project files should be kept on the internal disk drive. Your best option is to move them back there now. (There is a workaround for this if you are a level 5 Unix Ninja, but if that was the case, you would not be asking this question.)
The good news is...project files are generally not very big. They contain pointers to the event files, which contain the actual imported footage. When you move them in the finder, iMovie no longer knows how to make the connections between the project and the event.
However, you CAN move the event files to an external hard drive. This must be done within iMovie. Make sure you have clicked View/Events By Volume. Then, in the Events source list, drag and drop the event file to the external hard drive. By doing it within iMovie (not the finder) the links are preserved.

  • Hard Drive Replacement and Bootable External Drive

    Hello All,
I've got a Ti-Book (late 2002) with the original Fujitsu 60 gig HD that's out of room. My thoughts are to replace it with the popular Hitachi Travelstar ATA 160 gig HD that most people seem to like. My question is about partitioning an already partially full 250 gig G-Drive (G Technology, Inc.) with about 100 gigs of space left, and making it bootable. My thoughts are that I'd like to clone (using Carbon Copy Cloner) my current 60 gig HD onto that G-Drive if that's possible and how? Is it possible to make it bootable without fear of erasing the current information on the G-Drive?
My other thought is to buy an enclosure (most people like the Macally PHR-250cc) and put the old 60 gig HD into that, and cloning it back to the new Hitachi 160 gig HD when it's installed in my Ti-Book. I suppose my fear makes me want to transfer my 60 gig HD info first to an external source before pulling it out of the machine. I hope I'm not too paranoid about this.
Any words of advice are most welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Jack

It sounds like your Mini is no longer under warranty.
    I'd consider either this service:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/install/
or getting an external firewire hard drive and using it as your startup drive. The external drive could even be a much larger and faster 3.5 inch model, or a bus-powered 2.5 inch portable.

OK, I've taken the plunge and bought a Macbook I've got a WD external drive formated in NTFS for back-ups. I've sussed this can only be read from the MAC - is there a format that can be used to both read and write by both Mac and XP?
