Bootcamp partition is no longer visible and bootable
I decided to change size of my bootcamp (windows partition) by following steps in this thread:
how to resize my bootcamp partition without deleting itit
I ended up with having bigger windows partition (which is what I was trying to achieve), that I was able to boot to, but my Windows disk was no longer seen in OS X. I reviewed the thread above once again and it was pointing to another thread where folks were discussing issue similar to mine:
Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
Bottom line - Unfortunately, after performing the suggested action plan, I am no longer able to boot to my windows partition nor to see it from OS X
(I am able to select Windows disk while hitting Alt/Option during the boot, but then I get the message 'A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart')
Please see the diagnostics below and please advise how this could be fixed - at minimum I would like to boot to Windows partition again, maximum - also to access it via OSX as well.

So do you think there are there any chances of fixing it?
Though it is sad that resizing of bootcamp is not supported natively (by Disk Utility?) as it seems a lot of people would like to have this.

Hi everybody.
After Updating the new 2.9EFI update for the 2012 MacBook Pro, I restarted the computer which was set to boot into windows. The windows booted and show the BSOD for a brief moment then closing. After I booted into Windows again to see "BOOT FAILED!" I switched into Mac OSX to see that the the BOOTCAMP partition was also gone in finder so I opened Disk Utility to see that the drive was unmountable so I did disk repair and said everything was fine. I booted windows again and now it says a different message, something on the lines of NO OS. I don't know whats happening and everything was working fine until this EFI 2.9 UPDATE and I want to keep my OS and don't want to get rid of windows. I also wan't to keep my documents on Windows. BOOTCAMP still says I have windows installed. Nothing else recognises windows is there exept DISK UTILITY. I did not tamper with windows. I also can't delete partition... My Bootcamp Partition has disappear from OSX and its impossible to activate
Hello,
i`m using Bootcamp with Win XP, and now the partition has disappear from the desktop of OSX. When i use the HD-Diagnostic tool i can see the partition as unactivated. Trying to activate is not possible. But the partition seems to be working, because i can still start Win XP when i reboot and hold the "alt" Key. Then i can choose between OSX and WinXP and it goes fine. Is there a way to activate this partition in OSX? Because i want to delete WinXP from my Apple.Hi
To remove the WinXP partition you have to run Bootcamp Assistant (Application/Utilities) again, it should give you the option to (not sure of exact words)Remove Windows and Return to one partition.
This question should have really been asked in the Boot Camp Public Beta Forum. The first thread in that forum is called Uninstalling Boot Camp but gives the same instructions as I have.

sym.play("Start") - I have a frame label "Start" on the timeline.
None of these work.
Any advice? It says my response is "Waiting for Moderator approval".

So I got a new hard drive for my early 2009 version Mac Book Pro and some new memory to speed the little guy up. I was trying to copy the Mac and BOOTCAMP partitions onto the new drive, and I am close, but not home free.
Here's what I have done so far:
I got an external cage thing for the new/old HD.
I put the new HD in the cage and cloned the mac and BOOTCAMP partitions to the new disk while booted from a DVD.
I put the new drive in the machine and the old one in the cage.
I booted the machine and it loaded the mac side fine.
When I tried to use the 'option' key to, select the system I wanted to boot into on the reboot, it didn't show me the windows (bootcamp) option.
That's where I am at. When I go into disk utility it shows my BOOTCAMP partition in the list of logical disks under my disk, but it is grayed out. I can mount it, but when I restart, I can't select it. I feel like I am so, so close. What do I need to do?
(BTW, the old drive, the dude I am trying to clone, still exists in its entirety in the cage; I could put it back in and go from there if I had to.)
Let me know what you all think!
-RicardoDo you mean you want to reinstall Leopard? If you want to boot from your Leopard DVD do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading. -
Ever since I installed Windows I don't have an option to switch to Mac.I installed it on the bootcamp partition with the lastest OSX and Windows versions. I did this a few years ago with an older Mac and Vista and remembered a prompt to choose OS during boot. I get nothing but Windows now. Any ideas?
if you restsrt and hold down alt, what boot options do you see
try restarting holding down command+R, choose disk utility and tell me what you see on the upper left hand side under the name of your physical drive -
Recovering bootcamp partition - is there a solution that works?
Dealing with bootcamp issues after a Lion upgrade seems to be a common problem with no agreed solution.
When I upgraded my iMac to Lion, the upgrade process couldn't create a recovery partition so Apple support advised me to use Disk Utility to create a small (5 GB) block of free space on my harddisk for the recovery partition to use and then to use Disk Utility to enlarge the OSX partition again to recover whatever remaining free space was left after the Lion upgrade had completed.
This I duly did. However, after I enlarged the OSX partition using Disk Utility to recover the free space I found that a) the Bootcamp partition had been renamed "disk0s4" and b) when holding down the Option key when booting, the Recovery option was now labelled "EFI Boot" and appeared to boot from the regular OSX partition. Attempting to boot windows in Bootcamp results in a "missing operating system" error message.
I'm not so worried about the recovery partition as I have a bootable DVD and USB flash drive.
What I would like to do is recover some files from the Windows partition. There is a lot of opinions in the Apple suport forums about what works such as, booting Windows from the install disk and running the "fixmbr" and "fixboot" commands or using rEFIt or BootPicker (which doesn't seem to work on Lion).
Is there a reliable approach to fixing this problem so that I can at least read the contents of the partition, even if I can't boot from it? If I can't actualy recover the partition I'm not too fussed, so long as I can get the data off it.
Thanks...MacsWhy do you suggest installing Lion on an external h/disk? Is this because of problems with Lion or just suggested standard procedure?
Some of the options may work although I am unable to mount the partition at all (in OSX or by booting from a Linux live CD and trying to mount it from there) so I'm not sure how far any of them will get.
I haven't tried booting from the Windows DVD as yet.

I wondered whether the entry in the partition table had been completely screwed so I had a look with FDisk and GDisk.

From looking at the Fdisk and GDisk output I cannot see where the problem is occurring (although I know 2/5ths of stuff all about partition tables). I notice that the Bootcamp partition is now lacking a name although I don't know whether this matters or not and strangely FDisk identifies it as an HPFS filesystem whereas Disk Utility identifies it as MSDOS (FAT). -
Bootcamp partition won't boot with two OSX installations
Hey,
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX Mavericks (10.9.5) and had installed Windows 8.1 through Bootcamp and everything worked like a charm. I then added a new partition to install the developer preview of OSX Yosemite. Everything worked, I could boot to OSX 10.9.5, OSX 10.10, both recovery partitions and Windows.
Lately, my Mac had some issues that made me booting to 10.9.5 recovery and using disk utility to repair the Mavericks and Yosemite partitions (both were good, interestingly I could not repair the disk permissions, though) and I even clicked on "Repair", as the whole disk was selected and Disk Utility repaired something (I forgot what it was, but I think it changed the MBR).
Now the Windows partition is gone, when I option-Boot and when I try to reboot from OSX to the Windows partition using the "startup disk" option of System Settings, it says
No bootable device --- insert boot disk and press any key
I want to be able to boot Windows again (and my OSX partitions) and would love to be able to do so, even when I choose to delete the Yosemite partition once it's out of beta so that I can update Mavericks. I tried using this guide:
Repairing Boot Camp after creating new partition
My problem is that it says that the Windows partition should be number 5 on /dev/disk0. In my case, the described partition is number 6.
Can I simply replace the number and it should still work or will it break something that the Windows partition is not at the place it normally is?
Thanks in advanceWell, I just tried it and it didn't work. I still don't see the Bootcamp partition when I option-boot and when I try starting Windows via Startup Disk settings, the screen just turns black after a while and then a white blinking horizontal cursor appears (not even the "No bootable device" error any longer).
Any help would be appreciated. -
Upgrading MacBook Pro Hard Drive - cannot get Bootcamp partition to work
Hello,
The other day, I decided to replace my 320 GB hard drive with a 1 TB hard drive/SSD hybrid. I did a little bit of research about cloning the drive before that, and it seemed pretty straight forward to clone the OS X partition, but I wasn't really sure about cloning my Windows partition. Originally, my 320 GB hard drive had 2 partitions: 220 GB for OS X Mavericks, and 100 GB for Windows 8.1.
I bought the new drive with an external enclosure and plugged it in. The first thing I did was open Disk Utility and partitioned the new hard drive (750 GB HFS+, 250 GB NTFS). I figured I would need to partition it first and clone each partition separately. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X partition, and it worked with no problem (I immediately could restart my computer and boot with the partition on the new drive, while it was still plugged in by USB).
Next, I tried using CCC to clone the Windows partition the same way (I realize now that CCC cannot do this). 7 hours later, the cloning was complete, but there was an error that a couple files couldn't be copied. I tried copying them manually but it didn't work. I wasn't sure if the Windows partition would work, so to find out, I switched the hard drives and put the old 320 GB one in the external enclosure. I booted my computer and it booted the new OS X partition with no problem. It also mounted the Windows partition that I cloned with CCC, and I can access all of the files in it. However, when I restarted and held down "option", it would not let me boot the Windows partition.
After some googling, I realized CCC is not able to clone a bootcamp partition and make it bootable, so I opened disk utility and deleted the Windows partition (using the minus button), then recreated it (using the plus button). I downloaded Winclone (paid $30), which supposedly can clone a bootcamp partition. I opened Winclone and it seemed pretty simple: you just choose the source partition on the left, and the target on the right. I plugged in the USB enclosure with my old hard drive, and in the Winclone menu the original Windows partition popped up. I chose that as my source, and chose to copy it to the new NTFS partition on the new drive that I created. I left it on overnight, and when I woke up it said it was completed.
I now had two drives mounted: my NTFS partition that I created, and a new one that said "EFI". I have no idea what EFI is. My NTFS partition looks like it has all of the files from my original Windows partition on it; however, when I restart it does not allow me to boot with it, although I now have the option to boot EFI. When I select EFI, I am given the Windows 8.1 start up screen (with the blue Windows logo), but then an error message pops up saying something like there is an issue and it needs to restart (it restarted before I could read the whole thing).
When I boot in OS X, I only have the NTFS partition (with all my Windows files) mounted, and no EFI. When I restart, I can still boot EFI, but I always get the same message and then it restarts.
Is there any way I can fix my Windows partition so that it works the same way it did on my old drive? What is EFI? Can I delete it? How can I make the NTFS partition, which seems to have all of my files, bootable? I only want 2 partitions: one for OS X, and one for Windows. Also, can I do all of this without having to reinstall either of the operating systems?
ThanksHmm, that's a good question!
I headed over to the twocanoes website (the folks that make Winclone) and their guide mentions something about running Sysprep before you create the Windows image. If you skipped that step, that may be why you're having issues
http://www.twocanoes.com/support/winclone/migrating-a-bootcamp-partition-with-wi nclone/
Step 24 in that guide also mentions copying a Boot file - were you able to/did you do that?
You may have better luck over in the Bootcamp forum, which is here.

Ran DiskUtility on Bootcamp partition, now windows cant boot
I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my MBPr and it was booting fine several times.
I noticed yesterday the bootcamp partition was no longer showing System Preferences -> Startup Disk
I could still get Windows 7 to boot if I did a restart on Mac OSX 10.7.4, held down the Option button during startup, then I was given the Bootcamp partition as a choice.
I went back into Mac OSX, and tried running Disk Utility to verify and then repair the Boot Camp partition. It thought it found all kinds of errors and claimed to fix them. I let it very and fix the main root drive (my entire hard drive) and it claimed tor repair the boot paritions.
Bootcamp still not showing in System Preferences -> Startup Disk
Now Windows 7 does not boot properly, it comes up into system repair mode. And it can not restore to an earlier point in time. All the system repair options crash with memory reference errors shortly after they get started.
I guess it is was silly to expect the Mac Disk Utility to properly repair a windows drive. But if it can't do this, the option shouldnt have been offered!
So I guess its time to erase the Bootcamp partition and start over. Good thing I didn't install anything important in Windows, other than all the updates. The option won't be there unless you added a 3rd party NTFS driver that is suppose to add NTFS write support.
And that driver is why Windows didn't show in Startup Disk (which does happen too on its own and is totally benign)
If you want to repair Windows, use chkdsk and/or the Windows 7 DVD you have. Not Lion DU.
You dont' erase NTFS in DU either. you can format it in Windows 7 DVD, yes, just like you did originally.
And when you get it running, make backup system image(s) with WinClone 3 (in OS X, to an external hard drive - not to your Mac boot volume)
http://www.twocanoes.com/
if you are going to use and need to write to NTFS, the only one current and work best today

Lion + bootcamp partitioning fails
I tried using bootcamp assistant on my mbp with Lion (fresh install) but it seems to hang on "status: partitioning" and the computer seems to hang. I had to forcequit using the power button. And now it seems like the space is lost on the harddrive, 100 gb gone poof.
I tried booting with recovery hd and verify disk and repair disk. No changes.
Did I do wrong by forcequitting during bootcamp partitioning? How long should I have let it actually run? (The whole computer were hanged/locked/frozen).
What should I do now?I would uninstall what ever was installed and start over.

If You Have Problems Creating a PartitionIf you have problems creating a Windows partition, check the following:
Your Mac’s disk must be a single partition, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If the disk already has more than one partition, you must repartition it.
Your Mac’s disk must be an internal disk. You cannot use Boot Camp Assistant toinstall Windows on an external disk.
If you have a Mac Pro with more than one internal disk and you want to installBoot Camp on a disk that isn’t in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in thelower numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp.
If a dialog appears saying “The disk cannot be partitioned because verificationfailed,” try repairing the disk using Disk Utility and opening Boot Camp Assistantagain. If that doesn’t work, back up all the information on your computer, andreinstall Mac OS X. For more information, click the Finder icon in the Dock, chooseHelp > Help Center, and search for “reinstall Mac OS X.” -
Can't mount bootcamp partition in 10.9.5
Hi, I'm only able to boot into my bootcamp partition by restarting the computer and holding down alt/option. When I'm in OSX, I'm only able to see the partition in Disk Utility, and it's greyed out there. I just installed Windows 8, updated to windows 8.1, and then installed a mavericks update. I guess somewhere along the line the bootcamp partition got disconnected from mavericks?
I did some googling and I think I need to do something in gdisk to fix it, but I'm not sure how that works. Here's my output from

Any help would be appreciated! I already installed gdisk successfully, just have no idea how to use it.Yeah, and actually I tried using gdisk because I hadn't gotten any replies, I really messed up what I had and now I can't boot into windows ^^;
Here's a new version of those previous two. Somehow BOOTCAMP turned into XENIX, I have no idea how or what that means (nothing good probably)

Restoring a windows ISO backup on Bootcamp Partition
My Details:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP112.0138.B11
SMC Version (system): 2.19f12
OS: 10.10.1
Bootcamp Partition: Winblows 8.1 Pro
The History: hard crash... restore everything
Unable to restore from time machine.
Installed OSX Maverricks via Internet Recovery
Installed Windows 8.1 Pro via Boot Camp
Transfered Data from Thunderbolt External HD via Migration Assistant (Crashed twice, worked on third try)
I was able to get my stuff back in working order including Bootcamp To run windows... The trick was to install windows before importing data with migration assistant. Loading Windows would fail if I imported migration assistant data before hand.
The Problem: I have a windows backup 30gb ISO from before the crash that I want to load up. Has anyone performed this? is there a way to get my windows data re-installed into this machine?
Is it possible to load the System Restore into a USB and simply just re-installing the earlier date ISO?
any expertise in restoring my Windows Partition would be greatly appreciated.Windows Backup Restore goes through all the prompts.
When it's at the step to start writing to the partition I get an error along the lines of it can't over write to that partition. I wish I had a screenshot of the error message.
My BootCamp Partition is 120GB so the 30GB ISO should extract no problem.
Either way, I think I am SOL
I dowloaded winclone 4.4 and that too was a catastrophic fail with a test partition.
There should be an easier way to back up and restore your BootCamp Partition. In todays day and age Software like TM should be able to image your entire system. All it's partitions, and give you the ability to restore everything to a certain point in time.
This has been a huge ordeal, I'm shocked that Yosemite, wouldn't even restore from Time machine. Looking through this forum, TM has a lot of issues in Yosemite. Thankful Migration Assistant at least gave me my data back (after two very worrisome crashes) -
I know it's a little short notice, but I ordered a 1 TB hard drive to upgrade the 500 GB hybrid drive in my MacBook Pro. I have a Bootcamp Partition on the hard drive and was wondering what the best method would be to transfer it to the new hard drive. I have an external hard drive enclosure that I plan to put my Mac's current HDD in to transfer files, and I'll keep it in that to use for storage later. I also have a Time Capsule.
What's the best way to transfer my Bootcamp Partition to my new HDD?Ok, well I'll see if I can find out on Microsoft's site if Windows can restore from an external drive, and if not I guess I'll try Winclone.
I must say, the speed with which I can receive an answer here far surpasses any other form of customer support anywhere.
Thanks for the help!
