Text Entry No Longer Works - Controls Tool Selection Instead

Well here's a particularly peeving peculiarity!
Once upon a time, you could throw a text generator into the time-line, double click on it to bring it up in the viewer, click on the Properties tab and type your text into the entry field without problems.
Well, after a short time editing, the situation changes and subsequently it seems I can't do that. Instead, my keystrokes are routed to the tool selection palette or the FCP timeline itself.
This even extends as far as trying to change the names of Sequences or Clips in the Browser.
Subsequently, ALL keyboard input in FCP fails. No keystrokes are accepted at all, not even shuttling around in the timeline. Using the mouse in a menu to export a movie works and brings up the Export dialogue, but I can't type anything in the filename field.
I've tried trashing prefs, caches, logging in under a different user account, repairing permissions, lighting black candles and meditating upon mental images of Steve Jobs and nothing seems to work.
Back in the rest of the OS, say in the Finder, keyboard input is working fine.
The only FCP related information in the Console log is a failure to load a Filter bundle - which is odd because 5.1.4 is supposed to be specifically to fix filter errors:

I have FCP installed on a laptop too and it seems the same symptoms occur there.
What gives? Is it time to reapply the latest FCP update? Do I have difficult to diagnose font problems? Must I sacrifice another virgin to the gods?

It seems, at the moment, that this problem is related to using older project files, those created before 5.1.4, with 5.1.4. You do seem to get an alert asking if you want to update the project but perhaps this update doesn't complete correctly.
I haven't had a lot of time to explore but it seems new projects created in 5.1.4 don't suffer this problem.

Time Code Overlay no longer working

I'm having one of those bizarre computing experiences where a function I've been using for years no longer seems to work.
Timecode overlay is no longer showing the source material timecode - it shows the in and out timecode in the top of the canvas but none of the timecodes of the material in the timeline.
Does anyone know if I've inadvertently turned something off, or is it good old fashioned voodoo?

If that's not it, then check in Displays Preferences to make sure both computer displays are set to display millions of colors.
I don't know for certain if this would cause your problem, but if either display is instead set to thousands, then Safe Title and Safe Area lines won't be visible. Maybe the others won't be visible either.

As i'm installing itunes, I have this problem come up I have tried installing reinstalling all components and still doesn't work this is the error message?

Serial port control -- what's this code snippet?

Hi, all.
I've just become active working with LabView, version 6.0i. And this because of a program which "suddenly" stopped working, with no changes made by anyone that I can see (yeah, likely story, right?).
In short, the screenshot which I'll include with this post is of one tiny code snippet buried deeply in the .vi which runs an X-Z positioning system. I'd like to know what people thing this code snippet does. I have my suspicions, but I can't believe that whoever wrote this code actually used it for this purpose!
The X- and Z-positioners which I'm using are controlled by separate power sources, and separate ports on the computer. The X-positioner is ultra-fine-resolution, and has an optical encoder. It's controlled by the RS-232 port on the computer, and it's meant to be moved only a little at a time. The Z-positioner is a bit more coarse, and usually moves quite a bit at a time. It's serial-port controlled.
The screenshot is of the portion of the code called "XMove" -- that portion of the code which controls the x-positioning stepper motor. Often, the Z-positioner is still running during this part of the code (the "ZMove" subroutine is called before the "XMove"), and then, after both parts of the positioner have stopped, the code should shut down the power to them, and update the position of the translation stage.
However, once the code gets to this portion (screenshot), that while loop just keeps running.
Here's what I think is happening (please correct me if I'm wrong!): The Z-positioner is run by the serial port, which, as far as I know, can be controlled by only one device at a time. Thus, this While loop does the following:
1) attempts to write the characters "1R" followed by a linefeed to port 0 (the applicable serial port on this computer);
2) reads how many characters are stored in the serial buffer;
3) reads all the characters in the serial buffer;
4) takes the first two characters from the string read;
5) compares these two characters to *R;
6) if the two characters are R, then the loop terminates and the code finishes.
As far as I can tell (I've probed many parts of this structure), the code fails when the "N" portion passes the number of characters in the serial buffer to the "R" portion -- it's always zero. It appears to me that the "W" portion writes to the buffer AFTER the number of characters is read (I wouldn't have suspected this unless I'd run it many times and monitored which steps were done in which order). This ain't right!
I found a similar question answered in the KnowledgeBase forum, but the answer to that one was that the serial port may have an "echo" mode. That doesn't change the fact that data is being from to the port before it's written, does it?
Is there a way to make sure that the "read" statement happens AFTER the "write" statement? Am I way off base with what this code snippet should do? And, most importantly, *** is this a good way to tell if the Z-positioner is done with its job? ***. Is this a standard trick to tell if a program is done with the serial port?

I suspect someone did change it, but they just don't realize they did.
THe code snippet is an example of some very bad LV code! What you suspect is happeneing is indeed true. LV uses a data dependacy paradigm that says code execution order is dependent on data availablility. Data availability is determined by ythe rule that the output of a node or sub-VI is not available until the object completes.
In you snipet, the only node that has to complete before the read bytes at port and the write to port VI is the the constant port number constant. That means that LV can execute either the write or the check bytes at port VI's first. This is determined at LV compile time. If for some reason LV decideds to compile in the write before the check bytes at port, the
n the I/O may work as intended, BUT NOT POROGRAMMED!
For a quick fix, put the contant port number and the write VI in a single frame sequence structure. This way the read from the constant and wire operation must comlplete before the seq completes, therby forcing the read stuff to wait.

After project build, code that opened a sub VI no longer works

I have a project that I am ready to build into a .exe.
I have code in the main VI that opens and runs another VI when an operator clicks on a button. When the operator is done manipulating the popup vi, he closes it and continues working in the main VI. He opens this popup VI often. The code that opens this popup vi is shown in a .jpg file attached. Obviously, if the project is built into a .exe, this code will no longer work (even if I still have the "PID Popup.vi" file in the correct location.
What is the proper method of opening a "popup" vi from a "main vi" that will still work when I build a project?

simple question, did you retain the pop-up's front panel in the build? My guess is that you have not, and that you are getting an error when you invoke it, but since the errors are not handled you would not know that.
Just a guess and my $.02
Of course reflecting about 20 more seconds, you would not need to include it in the build. But remember, if you are calling other VIs that are in the build, it is a possibility of getting a compile error as you are running in the RTE and not the development environment. I would wire the error terminals and output that error cluster and look there.

Does anyone know how to change the Snippets folder to a
shared network folder?
I've had a look in;
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application
Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
and
C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Dreamweaver 8\Configuration
But I'm not entirely sure, I'd like to set up a shared folder
so our team can add/edit and share a code snippet library within
Dreamweaver.

I have an ipod touch 4th gen. and since the last update the lock button no longer works, this has caused it to have a lot of problems now like freezing all the time, kicking me out of almost all my apps, some times even when if locks on its own its not locked and buttons with be pushed in my pocket, and this causes the battiery to die fast. I really love my ipod and would like to just get it fix if possible for a reasonable about of money. Installation of Software Instruments and Loops fails because of Version

Hello, I'm right new to Mac, OS X and iLife.
So here's my problem: GarageBand Version 4.1.1 (248) wants to install the rest of software instruments and loops, but fails with this error message (translated from german):
Warning!
For this update GarageBand Version 4.0 or higher is required.
[Close]
After this, the installation application closes.
When I click a greyed loop in the browser this message appears:
At the moment iLife'08 will install the software instruments and loops.
Please be patient and look for the installation applikation in the dock.
[Close]
But nothing happens, no loops or instruments will be installed.
How can I fix this?

No, I have not moved the app.
Only thing I've done, was the software update.
Now I've tried out wether it helps, if GB generates a new Application Support folder.
I've renamed user/library/app. supp./garageband to garageband _org, and GB generates an new.
But the same error appears.
Maybe the Update to 4.1.1 is buggy?

Javascript via showDocument no longer working

A number of applets I have made execute javascript using the showDocument method as in the code snippet below. Now these applets were all working fine last week and now this week they have stopped working. I created a test applet just with a button on which executes the code below when clicked and this too does nothing, it doesn't even throw an exception.
Any ideas why I can no longer get this to work? I realise I can achieve Java to JavaScript communication via JSObject, but I'm trying to avoid that - and this solution seemed to work fine before. I'm running these applets in Internet Explorer 6.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you recently install any Windows updates? Cuz if so, it seems a recent IE security hotfix has broken this behaviour. It's not clear if this was intentionally done or if it's a side affect from something else. If it's intentional, my contention is this is a mistake. A javascript URL shouldn't be considered a violation of the standard security sandbox. The scripting engine already has it's own security to deal with bad Javascript.
Suffice it to say, you need to use JSObject.

Since i downloaded new OS my sound no longer works, this if for itunes, spotify and trying to listen to youtube videos

I just found out that a few of my slideshows have the music intact. For the rest, it looks like I will have to go through the cumbersome process of re-loading the music.
I can't tell is this was caused by the Mavericks upgrade or Iphoto Update.
