Booting from an USB stick with an old BIOS using a boot CD

Hi
I use larch to build a customized live-usb system, and I'm pretty happy with it.
The problem is that I can't boot it on some old computers, with a BIOS that :
Doesn't support booting from USB devices
Doesn't support accessing USB devices
This mean, that, when using a CD with GRUB, the USB stick cannot be seen by GRUB.
That issue is discussed in the Ubuntu help : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromUSB
As you can see, I have problem #2, so my option is to use Linux USB drivers to boot from the stick.
kernel /boot/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent
The only problem is that, this seems to be Ubuntu-specific, and I don't know how to do that in Arch Linux : do I need a custom kernel or something ?
I tried searching for "cdrom-detect" in the Linux Kernel Documentation, without success.
Thanks

I use Plop bootmanager to boot from usb cause my PC cant boot from usb because of BIOS
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html
I actually use a older version that seems to work better than newer one
link to mine> http://multidistro.com/downloads/plpbt
grub legacy entry
title Plop
root (hdx,x)
kernel /boot/plpbt
grub2
menuentry "Plop" {
       set root='(hd0,1)'
       search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set e6adb195-3201-42f0-b6d6-f175abe1912c
       linux16 /boot/plpbt
see if that works

  • Fresh Lion on MBA 4,2. Won't boot from Lion USB Stick

    Hi all quick question,
I got a new MBA 4,2 just the other day. Long story short, I was doing a triple boot with linux and mac and messed it up, reverted and did a fresh Lion install. I'm tooling around with some other stuff and noticed that I can't boot to a USB stick that has the Lion installer on it, it won't boot to a DVD either. It'll boot to other installers but not Lion.
The interesting thing is that I use this exact same USB stick on my girlfriends computer and it'll boot to that installer just fine.
So I'm kinda freaking out thinking I messed something up on this computer that I can't fix. My latest Lion install is from a Lion Internet Restore.
When I try and boot to the USB stick I get a circle / slash icon and can't go any further.
    Any ideas?

    See this thread.
I don't think reposting a topic is permitted here.
I'm guessing that the Internet Recovery didn't work after all?
Or did it work, but you have no backup?
The best solution is to do a bootable Carbon Copy Clone of your fresh install. It's the only surefire means of a safe and easy restore on a Mid 2011 MBA. Just my opinion.

  • Satellite C50-A-1FT - How to boot from the USB stick

    hi,
this is last stop really as have run out of ideas, have asked every techie that know including taking it to an independant computer store.
I am using a toshiba satelite C55 a-1d5, with windows eight preinstalled.
I am trying to get Ubuntu booting off a Toshiba G3 USB stick [sixty four gb capacity],theres nothing wrong with the stick or the multiple distros on it.
so have followed all the advice Ive found and obviously as woud usualy do-on the BIOS/UEFI screen have made sure the boot sequence has USB first, but when using the CSM boot order it wont boot the USB stick it just gets over runned by Windows 8.
I tried to deactive from the BIOS the "secure Boot" or something like that, but it seems to be already off... and its weird because my laptop is new. just bought it 2 days ago.
please can any kind soul take pity and offer reasons why this may be happening or even better, know how to get linux on it? thanks in advance

Seems that you could solve this issue disabling the secure boot in BIOS as well in registry:
    HKeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ SecureBoot\State
(UEFISecureBootEnabled needs to be set to 0 to disable SecureBoot within the system)
But to be honest this should not affect the USB booting in case the Windows 8 (or Win 8.1) has been completely powered OFF.

  • Why can't I boot from a USB stick Ideapad Laptop?

    Hi
I just bought new Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P and i've got a problem with installation an Windows 7 64x from a bootable stick.
The OS on laptop is FreeDOS and from this level a cannot install the windows os. The DOS system won't boot from usb stick and there's no BIOS so i can't set the boot order.
As i try to run setup.exe from d: drive(which is flash drive) i receive message that i cannot open this file in DOS system.
I prepared the USB stick according to this solution:
    1)   Open a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges in either Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro.
    2)   Insert the target USB boot media device into an available USB port.
    3)   Type "DiskPart" in the command prompt.
    4)   Type "List Disk” (make note of the disk number of the target USB drive).
    5)   Type "Select Disk X”, where X is the target USB drive noted in step 4.
    6)   Type "Clean”.
    7)   Type "Create Partition Primary”.
    8)   Type "format FS=fat32 quick”.
    9)   Type "Active”.
    10) Type "Assign".
    11) Type "list volume".
    12) Type "Exit".
The error still persist and i can't go any further with win installation. I strongly asking for help and advice.
    Team please assist.

    Hello and welcome,
Are you booting in UEFI or legacy mode?
IIRC if you want to boot and install in UEFI mode you need to format your USB stick FAT32 (which you did) and enable CSM support in BIOS.
You should also be using SP1 media. If pre-SP1 some additional file manipulation is required to get the installer to boot in UEFI mode.
Installing Windows 7 in native EFI mode from USB
If you're booting and installing in legacy mode (which I suspect you are if running FreeDOS - just a guess on my part) you need to format that USB flash drive NTFS.
(You don't say, but I also assume you've copied the contents of a Win 7 install ISO or DVD to that flash drive...)

  • I want to put photos on my ipad from a usb stick (with a connector)

When I put the 8GB usb stick into the ipad (through a connector) I get the message
    Cannot use device.
The connected USB device requires too much power.
I am trying to load some photos on the ipad.
    Thanks

I have 3 USB thumb drives. One, the oldest, causes the too much power msg. Buy a new one.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • How do I boot from a USB drive with Leopard using a Lion iMac?

I'm looking to wave good bye to my MacBook Pro running Leopard and upgrade.
However, I need to keep a version of Leopard so I can run certain Audio Units that won't run on Snow Leopard or Lion.
I have made a bootable drive with Leopard on it, but I can't get it to boot on my iMac running Lion.  It boots fine using the MacBook though.
What am I doing wrong here?  Is what I'm looking to do possible any more, or do I need to configure the drive for use with a Lion machine somehow?
Any help would be very much appreciated...

Clearly not supported by Apple but as an Engineer I would like to know what the barriers are.
I believe that pre-installed Lion has extra disk partitions - probably for Utilities and software 'repair'. Having extra disk partitions is not new for Apple - they did it on some Macs long before OS X but these did not stop booting from other OSs or replacement with new single partition disks.
I suspect there are ways of doing it but it would probably invalidate the guarantee and might require removal of Lion, disk format, partition and reinstallation of OSs. Even then the reinstalled Lion may not work. I suspect it is only a matter of time before somebody posts a low risk way of doing this.

  • No GRUB menu when booting from USB stick with new archlinux

    Hi,
I want to try archlinux but I do not have a full backup of my current system right now, such that I do not dare to install archlinux on it. I decided to install it on a USB drive and followed the Beginners Guide considering the hints for installations on USB sticks.
The first issue that I had was that I was not able to to install gurb and it complained that no boot partition was available. I started from scratch again but this time choose the partition type EF02  (bios boot partition) instead of the default 0700 (I only have one partition on the stick). This time everything went fine until I rebooted from the USB stick. Instead of a grub menu I got:
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
    and nothing happened.
I booted again from the boot cd with archlinux and did the following to examine the grub installation again:
    mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
    arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    grub-install --recheck --boot-directory=/boot /dev/sdb
    >Installation finished. No error reported.
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
    >Generating grub.cfg
    >Found linux image: /boot/vmlinux-linux
    >Found linux image: /boot/initramfs-linux.img
    > WARNING: Failed to connect to lvmetad: No such file or directory. Falling back to internal scanning.
    > No volume groups found
    >Found LMDE MATE Edition (1) on /dev/sda1
    >done
I don't know what the grub-mkconfig output should look like...
Do you have any idea how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Arch!
EF02 is definitely not the type code you want. That is used for a small partition with no file system which grub needs on GPT disks because it cannot fit into the space on disk. You don't install anything into it and it is 1-2MB.
    Perhaps https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usb_installation would help?

  • [solved] cannot boot from dd usb and cannot install 64 with unetbootin

    hi,
been trying to install arch for almost 24 hours now. i just cannot manage to setup USBs to boot from.
first i was using unetbootin, but when the device not found error came up i tried using the methods recommended in the wiki. however, my hp elitebook 2540p cannot boot from the usb created using dd or imagewriter. so i went back to unetbootin and figured out the error was that the syslinux.cfg file needed to have ../../ replaced by archisobasedir=arch archisolabel=KINGSTON. now however, i cannot seem to figure out how to install a 64 bit system. when i run pacstrap all packages have i686 at the end, which i assume means its the 32 bit one.
    help
EDIT: ok i have now used 3 different USB sticks and run
    sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
on them. plugging them into the 2540p the laptop just wont boot. it wont get past the first hp screen, where i normally press esc to enter the menu so i can choose boot options. the usb just blinks and nothing happens. this same problem happens with imagewriter in windows.

    Which image did you use?
    i wrote exactly
    sudo dd if=~/Downloads/archlinux-2012.07.15-netinstall-dual.iso of=/dev/sdd
as mentioned in the edit above, the computer wont get past the hp screen where one gets the option to press the esc key... the usb just blinks and nothing happens...
    EDIT:
no the usb was not mounted...
the image was checked with both sha1sum and md5sum...
    EDIT2:
ok so i think i am in... i reformatted the usb with fat filesystem, and then went through the second instructions from the wiki, ie installing "Without overwriting the USB stick"... But i am still wondering why i couldnt just do the normal dd method. Is it that the hp bios cannot read certain filesystems?

  • I copied mp3 files from a usb stick and they appear in music folder in finder and on iPhone/ipad with itunes match but not in iTunes?

I copied mp3 files from a usb stick and they appear in finder in my itunes media/music folder and on my iphone and ipad with itunes match but not in the itunes library?

Not working.  And it didn't used to be a problem.  iTunes can find the songs with Search Library, but doesn't show in any index (by song, artist or album).  Finding with Search Library offers to play or add to Up Next, but neither actually does anything.  Using File-Add to Library does nothing as well.  The only way I can get the new files to play is to find in Finder and Open with iTunes.
I suspect Apple is trying to drive me to buy from iTunes store.  Not gonna happen.  If they don't fix this, I'll find another player.
This worked fine before OSX 10.8.

I have a 2012 Mini with a fusion drive that won't boot from a usb cloned drive. It came with 10.8.2 pre installed. I have zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Any thoughts?

When I tried using a recently downloaded (from the App store) version of MtLion 10.8.2 (12C60) I could NOT get the new MacMini to install or boot from a USB I had previously made. I was however able to use the Recovery Mode of the MacMini to create a bootable SSD which I had installed. The problem arose when I went back into Recovery DU as it saw the seperate drives (SSD & HD) as a broken Fusion Drive. Interestingly DU from the boot volume had NO issues and reported NO faults. It was the Recovery DU that identified the faulty Fusion Drive configuration. At this point I am definately out of my depth but my speculation is that the Recovery Volume is being used in some fashion to form the method or pattern that DU assigns files to the drives, System Report sees the drives as seperate volumes with all their individual characteristics.
Disk Utility did not make a bootable USB, I don't have or use CCC or Super Duper.
Here is the longer version I've been compiling:
Having bought a late 2012 Mac Mini(6,2) i7 2.66GHZ with the standard 1TB 5400 HD and 4GB of RAM (base model) I immediately decided to install a Mercury Elite 6g 240GB SSD and up the RAM to 16GB. I received both shipments on the same day and had all my new toys in front of me. After following the video advice on OWC’s website for the installation of the second drive I started the mini and formatted the SSD to accept the OS from Recovery on the original HD. This MacMini shipped with 10.8.2 (12C2034) as the OS, the normal build of 10.8.2 is (12C60). Having used Recovery Disk Utility to format the SSD it came back with an error that DU could’t Repair. I went ahead and installed the OS on the SSD and the Mini booted normally from both drives. The issue I encountered with this setup was that iMovie encountered an “unexpected error” and would not save a completed project. I therefore decided to figure the drive issue out because I suspect the new Fusion File Management software didn’t like my configuration with drives that Recovery DU saw as needing to be “fixed”. After spending some time on the phone with both OWC and Apple Support I took the plunge and used Internet Recovery Disk Utility and allowed both drives to be “fixed” after which DU created a Fusion Drive (Logical Drive) that I then ran Repair Disk on and it showed up as a single drive in DU. It works perfectly as described by Apple’s site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5446
Having checked the Link Speed and Negotiated Speed they both show as 6g so I’m pleased not to have lost performance due to it being fuzed to a 3g 5400 drive. The biggest drawback is that Apple’s Fusion Management only allows for 1 additional partition and I would have preferred more than that.
I have sourced some additional information here:

If anyone has a factory Fusion Drive could you please post the Link and Negotiated Speeds of both drives? This information can be found in Apple > About This Mac > More Info… > System Report >  Serial ATA and the drives should show up as discrete drives with their info listed separately.

Is it just bootable or does it have the Mavericks installation files on it? If so, yes. If not, no. You might consider getting an external enclosure. Put your old drive in it and boot to its Recovery partition. You can install from there. As a matter of fact, you can run Migration Assistant and get all your stuff over too.
