Broadcast safe effect settings for PAL on MPEG source

Hello,
I've been delivered a clip (shot on iphone ((29.97)), edited on Prem CC, exported as a 1920 x 1080 MPEG.
When applying broadcast safe filters I apply two to an adjustment layer. One set to reduce luminance at 99 (IRE), another to reduce saturation at 99 (IRE). When this is applied I get some quite heavy artifacts on high luma sections of the video. In this instance an LED illuminated train timetable, making the destinations/times unreadable.
I've not had this problem before, so I'm guessing it may be due to the clip I received being a 29.97 MPEG? Is there any way to resolve this?

Hi Paulie_LL,
Thanks for posting on Adobe forums,
Please provide following information :
What is the OS and version ?
What is the Graphics Card installed on the system ?
How much Ram do you have ?
Do you use any external Hard Drive ?
Are you using security software e.g. Norton, etc?

  • Settings for Pal DV MPEG 4 16:9 25i with compressor

    Hi,
I will neee some help. I need to sumit to a local TV in Spain a video on PAL DV MPEG 4 16:9 with 25I.
Enclosed pic of the actual setting

Yes you can make it PAL 16:9 25i but not in MPEG-4. There is only a very specific set of MPEG-4 part 10 that will make standard definition interlaced at a high data rate. It cannot use the DV codec. I think only x264 will do it, and I don't know anything that will output that MBAFF encoding structure, maybe Episode, or as Russ said, Sorenson. It's a completely bastardize format that as far as I can see serves no useful purpose. Can't imagine why they want that, unless it's for some specific playback device that they're using to transmit from. Would be nice to know what this device is.

  • Broadcast safe filter settings

    Hello,
I applied the broadcast safe filter to a PNG file (logo) that has excessive whites. However, when I switch - what I believed were presets (130 / 120 / 115 / etc.) nothing changes and nothing happens at all actually!
The only thing that seems to do anything is when I dial the Max RGB Output level switch...

    Then the question rises:
What are the maximum values in the scope? If none of the levels is exceeding the 100 you don't have a problem.
Also the values (numbers in the filter) don't switch.
The values will not swith. The top button 'Luma Chroma Mode' swithes between
    • 'CUSTOM - User Control Below' Which will let YOU control the sliders
    • one of the presets (Conservative, Extremely conservative, etc) Then the plugin will use PRESET settings. It won't have a look at the sliders (iow, you cannot tweak a preset). Nor will it update the value of the sliders.
The language the plugin is written in (FxScript), just doesn't provide feedback to the sliders.
So it's either using one of the presets OR select CUSTOM and play with the sliders
I was wondering if it was due to the PNG file type? ...
No. .mov or .png it's all the same to the filter

  • Settings for 867 x 368 source to DVD?

Can't seem to find the right Compressor settings to create an MPEG-2 asset for DVD creation.
My FCP source is 867 x 368, square pixels and I'm sending it to Compressor from FCP 7, but the conversion to rectangular pixels has me stumped.  Even when I change my pixel aspect to NTSC-CCIR 601 / DV in FCP's Sequence Settings, Compressor distorts the aspect ratio further.  I can't figure out what settings will retain my original 867 x 368, square pixel aspect without distortion.  I'd like the Compressor output to be exactly like my 867 x 368 source, except letterboxed at top and bottom.
    Anyone have the magic bullet?

Hi Jeff, thanks for your response.
Sorry I will be more accurate with times… There are 7 sequences totalling 108mins, I cannot use Dynamic Link because I am editing in PP CC. So does Encore do further compression on top of what was done when exporting from PP? I thought the file size was the file size and if Encore couldn't fit it on a DVD it would let you know! These are my PP and export setting:
PP CC Sequence settings: 720x576 25fps D1/DV PAL
Export Settings: Format: MPEG2-DVD Preset: PAL DV Wide Progressive
Are you saying if I get the files down to 60 minutes that I will have the optimum quality? Basically I want the best quality possible so if I have to split on two DVDs I will, Blu-ray I'm afraid is not an option.
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Way to find out settings for an encoded mpeg file

Not sure if this is possible, but is there a way for compressor to tell me what the quality settings were for an mpeg file I already encoded? I just want to know what the avg and max bit rates were for the file.

If you changed the settings of a preset and didn't save them, then I don't think you can. You can see what the data rate of the file is by looking at it in quicktime (CMD+i), but Compressor will only tell you what preset you used to encode your file (in the History window).
If you saved the settings, you can look in the preset.

  • Settings for good/successful MPEG-2 I-frame encode

I've been having problems with Lagarith throwing junk frames when trying to encode to an intermediary AVI; using Vista Business/Ultimate 64, DV sequence with mixed XDCAM EX and DVCAM footage and uncompressed AVI renders from AE. The bad frames happen randomly (though rather infrequently) and in any of the footage types, so it's hard to rule out any of them as the source of the problem. I'm just going to assume it's an issue between Lagarith and AME, and move on from there.
Since I have quite a few timelines I'm exporting, and I'm doing all my end-product encoding in Squeeze as well as other apps, I need a good intermediary. I remember some talk on the board of using an MPEG-2 I-frame only 4:2:2 encode for this purpose; however, a search is not giving me much joy. So far, I'm having some inconsistent output issues with this format. Can anyone offer some advice as to good setting to use for this purpose?
    Thanks!

Yes, I'm running 1.3.19. I thought it was happening on just my primary editing workstation, until I ran 10 encodes on my laptop and got the same random issue. I'll have to post a frame to show you what I mean. If it was repeatable, I could try and diagnose the issue, but the garbage happens randomly.
I'm running the 64-bit version of the codec--at least I think I am. It seems to me that the installer copies the 64-bit version of the codec to the System32 folder, and the 32-bit version to the SysWOW64 folder. Also, if you right-click on the DLL and check the file properties, the version states as 1.3.18; the actual interface when you select Codec Settings in an app, however, shows 1.3.19. Very peculiar...
Note that this only seems to be happening when exporting a timeline through AME. I can encode to an AVI from AE, and haven't been able to reproduce the bug.
I'm trying to get some information together, and I'm going to try contacting the codec author. He seems very receptive to bug reports, based on the changelogs on the Lagarith website.

  • Format|settings for converting AVC MPEG-4 footage to import into project

    hi.
so the graphic designer for my favourite band dropped a couple of ~1⅓ gig MPEG-4 Movie (.m4v files consisting of footage taken during concerts in 2000|2001 on a handheld digital camcorder) into my lap the other day—& asked me if i could clean it up & split the each show’s file up into segments short enough to upload to YouTube...& while i feel fairly confident i can swing that order once i’ve got the footage in Final Cut, i’d greatly appreciate some advice regarding...making it to that premise. um. basically, if i try to import any of these .m4a files into Final Cut, i get this error:
    screenshot → [http://s3.amazonaws.com/ember/67PNmuKRePVvWJfFudHiSKj7kr9PfgzI_o.png]
so...after some preliminary investigation, i take it that i need to convert each of these files into a different format that Final Cut won’t turn its nose up at (—right?). which brings me to the crux of the matter:
§1 · *what format &|or settings* (—compatible with FCP7!—) *would result in the least loss of quality in the process of conversion,* if the original file is as delineated in this screenshot (→ [http://s3.amazonaws.com/ember/AAd0FBegXjXLXqtas8f9xIZa0v0TvrO3_l.png])?
§2 · *what program would you recommend i use to do this* (as yet hypothetical, albeit) *file conversion* (as prescribed in the answer to preceding enquiry)?

hey, great! thanks for the absurdly-prompt response. looks like that’ll do the trick.
though! a minor clarification, mostly just to satisfy my curiosity—
there are five Apple ProRes codecs:
    · Apple ProRes 4444
    · Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    · Apple ProRes 422
    · Apple ProRes 422 (LT)
    · Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy)
i’m guessing that—considering this footage is shot with a consumer-level cam, & is only 720x480 besides—the Apple ProRes 422 will be more than enough, right? that’s the one i should be using...riiight? (i mean...i figure anything more than that would be overkill,—or at least a moot point, if the original file doesn’t have anywhere near the level of detail|precision that the more heavy-duty iterations of ProRes affect—) ...is any of this speculation on target?
(i’m mostly concerned on account of the blurb about Chroma Sampling on page 7 of *Apple’s White Paper on the ProRes family* (→ [http://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/docs/AppleProRes_White_Paper_July2009.pdf])—since i want to do some pretty hefty colour correction {probably the 3-way color corrector + desaturate highlights & lows filters...though that’s just a hunch} on all these files, & i reeeeeeally don’t want to lose any data that might improve the quality|accuracy|&c. of said corrections.)
—& if it’s at all significant, i may be trying to use the SmoothCam thing on these as well...though this footage is so shaky & erratic i wouldn’t be surprised if trying to make it slightly less emetic is a nonesuch of a lost cause.

  • Sequence settings for PAL DVD output

    G'day,
I'm cutting my sister's wedding video.  I have footage from 2 cameras - a Panasonic TM900 (1920x1080p50) and a Canon MVX430 (miniDV SD PAL "widescreen").
The intended media is DVD.  I am using Final Cut Pro, and DVD Studio Pro.
I've read that I should use a PAL CCIR 601 5:4 720x576 frame size, with PAL CCIR 601 pixels in order to achive widescreen DVD playback.
And this seems right, as when I drag the HD and SD footage to the sequence, they both maintain their 16:9 ratios - with black borders top and bottom.
However once I start playing around with the footage... zooming in (ie increasing the scale in the Motion tab), or if I re-centre the footage, moving it around the frame, those borders move around or are completely lost.
Previously for this problem I have just used the crop function (with key frames as required) in the Motion tab, but that can get very painful.
Am I using the wrong work flow here?  Should I be using an actual 16:9 frame from the start, instead of the 5:4 with borders?
Is there an easier way to maintain the borders?
    Hope this makes sense...
For the record, I do have some understanding of what I'm doing, just was only taught what I needed to complete the projects I worked on at Uni, so don't have a full understanding of all of the complexities involved...
    Thankyou
    cosmic

    >Should I be using an actual 16:9 frame from the start, instead of the 5:4 with borders?
Yes. Make your Sequence DVPAL anamorphic.
    >Is there an easier way to maintain the borders?
Why do you want borders? On a 16:9 TV the screen will be filled. You will only see the borders on a 4:3 set.

  • Again: How to choose (easy) settings for PAL 16:9

Will try to describe my way, because of „trial and error“ it may not be easy…
    a) I got the movie from TV,
    b) see at the info in MPEG streamclip (as you know a very important tool):
    c) I let Streamclip convert .ts to DV:
    d) The result I imported to FCE:
    e) input and output (at the right)compared:
Which (easy) setting in FCE I have forgotten to check?

  • Broadcast Safe

    Hello,
I've been searching through Lynda tutorials and adobe postings and instruction manuals for a clear answer, but I can't seem to find one.
I'm looking to make my color corrected video output from davinci broadcast safe with the gfx and everything. I put the broadcast colors effect on my adjustment layer. I was surprised to see the Maximum Signal Amplification was set at 110, with no minimum signal. My impression is that it should be a touch under 100 and a touch over 0.
Do I use levels to pull the waveform under 100 and push it over 0? (there was another suggestion of using levels as an adjustment layer instead of broadcast safe effect).
Also, under broadcast colors, there's 'how to make color safe' luminance and saturation, but it seems either or and there isn't a way to separately control that. Also, is there a way to key what isn't safe in the viewer?
Kind confused here, would appreciate the assistance. Thank you.

The broadcast safe filter is a bit of a catch-all to compress levels, including RGB, White and Black levels. When running close to a deadline I have used it on graphics to bring white levels down. Some on this forum will tell you it's a sledgehammer. And they are right...the 3-way color corrector is a much better tool.
If you use it...it should always be the last filter you apply and in a nut shell it will bring your white levels down, your RGB down and your black levels up such that you will not have "illegal" signals for air on broadcast television stations.

  • Does the Broadcast Colors filter work?  How to get a broadcast safe production?

    Hey guys ~
Have searched around a bit but haven't found much info on this subject.  One of my films just signed a distribution deal (go team) and I've been in the process of submitting my deliverables.  The company I've been assigned to for QC uses FCP7 for their preliminary check, and if that passes they send it on to a more rigorous test to ensure legal broadcast levels.
I'd like to keep everything in PP, but here's the deal.  I export my film with PP CC to a ProRes HQ file using the "Broadcast Colors" filter set to an IRE of 99 (just to be a touch on the safe side).  I was happy because I thought the final product looked even better and retained even more information than the Broadcast Safe filter in FCP. Only the catch is, when I import the final product from PP into FCP7 to see the results that they are going to see, there is a consistent "red" warning on contrasty shots... some are totally outside of the FCP7 broadcast safe scopes.
I've succumbed to jumping back to FCP7 to do the final on this just to make sure it will pass inspection, but I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with this? What's the correct way that I'm missing to use PP CC to make sure that you have a finished product that is safe to put on the airwaves?  Is the PP CC Broadcast Safe filter reliable for professional delivery specifications?
Thanks in advance for any help...

Is the PP CC Broadcast Safe filter reliable for professional delivery specifications?
I dont think it is flexible enough and never use it.
Simplest way is to apply Premiere 'Levels' effect.
You will note an "automatic" level clip at 100% and then its easy to set White RGB Out at say 250 and fix any Color Channel Luminance issue..the same way.
    Then of course..Blacks.
FWIW - I use an Adjustment Layer to do this usually across the entire sequence

  • BroadCast Safe fixed in fcp ?

Hi guys - is it fixed ?
I just had a show knocked back by one of the local broadcasters here.
The stomp was done in AE using the Adjustment layer technique - some technique - STOMP !
I'd obviously rather stick in fcp - can I trust "Conservative" ?
I now have to finish this in fcp 6. Original master done with 5.12
Yes - I'd go to Color, but I'm not up to speed there yet and need more time.
I don't have hardware scopes to be sure.
So can I trust fcp Broadcast Safe at Conservative with Pal material ?
    thnaks in advance, as always...

it has always worked for me Robbo, although I always correct shot by shot and only throw the B.Safe filter down as a final just-in-case safety net.
there was some noise at one stage regarding problems with the filter but I beleive they were explained away (or some say fixed in the 5.1.2 update?) ... Shane will know more, I seem to remember he was the one making most of the noise

  • Favorite Effects & Settings, etc.

    Hello,
I have favorite effect settings for vocals & Logic instruments but am interested in mixing things up a bit and stepping out of the box. Then it occurred to me: maybe fellow users could share if they have any "go-to" effects, settings, instruments, etc.?
At the moment I'm specifically interested in what reverb and settings people are using on Logic drums (Indie Kit is a go-to for me for the kind of music I mostly do).
BTW, I may have missed it but I did a search and couldn't find a similar topic.
    Thanks!

    Hi Side,
That must be it -- people don't want to share. We're talking about a bunch of creative (and many insecure) folks in a very competitive industry.
It makes total sense. I guess I was a bit naive in people's motives. I wasn't trying to snake anything away, I just wanted to explore other options. Thanks for the insight.
I don't suppose you have found a good thread on when to use Mastering? On a song per song basis or on the ENTIRE completed CD?
I think I'll post a question and see what I can find out.
    Take care & happy recording!
