BrowseForDirectory doesn't display dialog

I'm seeing an issue running a Flex 4.1 Air application on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (x64) in which the Browse For Folder dialog fails to appear. I thought this might have been related to an out-of-date version of the Air runtime, so I updated it to version 3.4, and still no luck. FWIW, the application is compiled on a 32-bit machine, and uses a 32 bit version of the Air runtime (didn't find a 64 bit version).
The code in question is simple:
var dir:File = new File();
dir.addEventListener(Event.SELECT, openDir);
dir.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, openDir);
dir.addEventListener(Event.CANCEL, browsingCancelled);
dir.browseForDirectory("Select directory.");
In every other instance, this opens a handy-dandy dialog window, but not this time. Nothing appears to happen: no loss of focus on the main application window or disabling of functionality, and especially not a file dialog.
We've been running this application on several Windows OSes, from 32 bit XP, to 64 bit Server 2003, and a couple others, all without problems. Has anyone else encountered this before? Suggestions on a fix, or a likely culprit? I'm looking for next steps to diagnose, too. The application is packaged in an installer, which doesn't provide me with many options for debugging from the Adobe docs I've read so far.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll try to provide more details where I can, if needed.
Thanks,
Dan

The solution might be simpler than you'd expect. Choose 'Run as administrator.'
Maybe this will save someone a little time.

  • Doesn't display dialog to open file (Safari iOS 8.1)

    Hello.
    There is some repeatable problem in Safari iOS 8.1:
    Safari does not display a dialog to open a file (archive .zip for example) after downloading it from hosting via temporary direct link (see screenshot 1 - front page),
    although the correct dialog form on the page can be seen in miniatures layer (see screenshot 2 - miniature).
    So I can't open downloaded .zip file in any other application, because I can't see any control elements on the front page.
    Thanks
    & kind regards.

    I seem to have resolved the problem, though the solution is very surprising.
    I tried Settings > Safari > Names and Passwords.
    I got the "Passcode Lock Suggested" message, so I cancelled. Names and Passwords is still off.
    BUT now I'm still signed on when I open a new tab.
    Also, I'm still signed on when I turn the iPad off and on again, which never used to happen.
    Another behaviour it changed was when you close the first window (using the "double square" icon to reveal the hidden close button). That used to bring up Private Browsing (until the next time you turn the iPad on), but now it produces a blank Safari page (a good thing) and frequently visited sites (a very bad thing, since all tracking options are off, to the best of my understanding).
    I'm also getting Search Engine hints from Google, even though that option's turned off.
    In the OP, I reported "I enabled the Favorites bar to stop the bug which makes tab 1 go blank when tab 2 is closed." Not quite true. The bug happens less often, but still occurs. Sometimes it's fixed by tapping the bar at the top, but more often I have to go to menu and reselect Safari.
    Overall, Safari is obviously very buggy, I'm amazed that it has been released without testing.

  • New Cisco 1921 doesn't display running configuration

    Hi All,
    I've recently received this new Cisco 1921 routers with Cisco CP loaded, so it comes up with the annoying change username and password at first access. I've removed all of those files from the flash memory, and rebooted it, and it came up with the proper initial configuration dialog, which is what I wanted.
    But, whenever I configure the router with a set of basic configuration, like interface, routing, and snmp loggings, and hit wr mem, it doesn't display at all when I do "sh run". It's weird cause when I do sh run | sec rip  or any other stuff that I have configured, it shows up , but not in sh run at all.
    What's the deal with the new routers??? Even sh version doesn't show the config-register or memory allocation details. Which is weird!

  • Applescript buttons returned from display dialog

    Hi!
    I have been learning Applescript for about a month and found the following issue which I thought was an easy implementation.
    On the "text returned" I get the error condition described. Do not understand!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    display dialog ("ENTER COMPANY NAME") with title ("TOTAL SHARE SPECIFICATION")
    buttons {"Cancel", "Company"} default button "Company" default answer ""
      set BUTTON_Returned to button returned of the result
      set CompanyName to text returned of the result
    error "Can’t get text returned of \"Company\"." number -1728 from text returned of "Company"
    MacBook 6.1     OS X Yosemite     Vn 10.10.1
    Script Editor  Vn. 2.7 (176)
    Applescript 2.4
    Regards

    No question that Applescript can be frustrating to learn. Many things about it have to be figured out by trial and error and when dealing with scripting applications all bets are off. The application designer can pretty much do as they want so what works in one app might not work in another even though you are using the same and correct applescript
    I find Introduction to AppleScript Language Guide by Apple to be a good source of answers and usually always have it open when I'm scripting  for quick reference.
    Spend some time getting familiar with the script editor. It is intelligent and can usually steer you in the right  direction when it comes to debugging.  Especially get use to and pay attention to the colors it assigns to items in your script.
    For example in your original script notice the colors of Button_Returned and CompanyName (your variables) and compare those to result and button returned. Also notice how text returned is a different color from button returned even though both are essentially the same thing. This is an indication that something is not right and it is where the error message occurred. (for a list of the default colors used open the Script Editors preferences and look at the Formatting tab).
    Notice  also how the editor formats your scripts, again the way the script gets formatted can tell you a lot if there is an error.
    Finally the error messages while cryptic can offer some clues. In your case the error message was
    error "Can’t get text returned of \"Company\"." number -1728 from text returned of "Company"
    generated by the line
    set CompanyName to text returned of the result
    The last part of the error message is essentially the line that caused the error after evaluation. So here result evaluated to “Company” which doesn't seem right, display dialog returns a record.
    Finally there is the log statement which will print its value to the log window
    Hope this helps
    regards

  • Applescript Display Dialog Default Answer Rendering Issue

    After I installed Lion, I started having issues with Applescript rendering a dialog with a textbox.
    This is the sort of thing I end up seeing:
    The text box in the dialog doesn't render properly, and it's not possible to enter anything into it.  I've played with the display dialog parameters but it doesn't matter if I give an empty string for the default answer or other text, the behaviour is always the same.
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue might be?  I suspect I might need to reinstall Lion, but I'm not sure that's even going to clear up the issue.
    Thanks in advance.

    Tried replacing 'Standard Additions' osax, dumping editor prefs, dumping ALL user prefs (not recommended for faint of heart), using a different copy of Script Editor. Nothing helped.
    The user account displaying the bug is an old one; likely updated continuosly from the days of Tiger or earlier.
    A std account on the same drive, which merely went through the Snow Leopard -> Lion transition, does not exhibit the edit-text display bug.
    So I bit the bullet, and used Migration Assistant to move to a new account on a clean install of Lion on a spare hard drive. 3.5 hours later, the Applescript edit text display bug is gone.
    As far as I can tell, all docs, Apps etc. made it through intact.
    If that continues to look true over the next few days, I'll try using SuperDuper! to copy the new drive back to the older, faster HD.
    Perhaps some other Lion bugs'll also go away now that I've got a cleaner install.

  • How can a remotely launched Applecsript display dialog?

    I have many Mac-computers running a variety of Mac OS X systems, including Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard. On Tiger and Leopard, a Terminal bash-script could launch a compiled and saved Applescript (in /Applications/myLogout.app), which uses "say" to tell the user the system is going down in two-minutes. It then waits (delay 120), and then uses "say" again with this message, "System going down in 10 seconds". That's followed by a "display dialog" with the same message. The User could "Cancel" to stop the execution of the Applescript. If not, the applicaton proceeds to do cleanup work, like eliminating pesky /var/tmp files that invariablely end up as "Recovered" files or folders, and then it does "shut down".
    I could remote login from another computer and execute this simple bash-script:
        #!/bin/bash
        if [ -x "/Applications/myLogout.app" ] ; then
           osascript /Applications/myLogout.app display >/dev/null 2>&1"
        else
           echo "Can't find Logout application"
        fi
        exit 0
    This bash-script would wait at the osascript command until the Applescript terminated, which it did either because someone clicked Cancel in the dialog, or the "shut down" command occurred. My session then regained control, and usually was quickly terminated as a remote session.
    But now, Snow Leopard wouldn't properly execute the Applescript. It always fails for lack of a WindowServer connection to my remote session.
    I can't use launchd for this because of similar restrictions. For one thing, I have no clue who might be the active user on the target computer, and never had to worry about that because the "display dialog" was always presented to the "current" user. So, basically, Apple has removed the capability that existed in both Tiger and Leopard. Furthermore, their "solution" of using launchd doesn't cover this scenerio: - - remote launch of a UI application that warns the "current user", does a lot of cleanup work, and shuts down the computer.
    I can do everything in a bash shell except present a dialog to give the "current user" a chance to Cancel. Basically, the myLogout application can be launched by the "current user", and since it doesn't have an input parameter, it doesn't wait or do the dialog. That works. But even when called from a bash-script WITHOUT a parameter (that's the "display" word in the sample), it still fails in Snow Leopard.
    One final note: The "Product" listed with this post is NOT my Snow Leopard system, but it's NOT 10.4.11 either. I'm on 10.5.8

    One of us is confused about something, and I'm not sure which of us it is.
    What message are you trying to pass? If you want a formulaic "Shutdown in two minutes" message then code it directly into the script and don't bother with passing it. If you want a custom message that might change on different runs, then the easiest solution is to call a handler of the application on the remote machine and pass the message as a parameter.  just for an example, do this:
    Put this script as a stay-open script application on the remote machine:
    global idleInterval, message
    on idle
              try
      -- error catching. when you call handler x(), first the script's run handler will run, then the idle handler, then x(), and the the idle handler in a loop. this prevents unset variable errors on the first pass.
      message
      idleInterval
              on error errstr
                        return 1
              end try
              if idleInterval is "Start" then
      say message
                        set idleInterval to 10
              else if idleInterval is 10 then
      say message
                        set idleInterval to 5
              else
                        display dialog "System wants to shut down"
                        set idleInterval to 1
                        quit
              end if
              return idleInterval
    end idle
    on x(textMessage)
              set idleInterval to "Start"
              set message to textMessage
    end x
    go back to the admin machine and run this command in the applescript editor:
    tell application "ShowMsg" of machine remoteMachine
              x("Whoohoo!")
    end tell
    If it asks for authorization, give it. You can either save it in your keychain or we can work through the auth problem next.

  • Multithreaded Display Dialog?

    I'm believe this must have been asked before.  Forgive me for doing it again.  But, my searching has only found very old discussions on it.
    Is there a way, using Applescript Editor, to display information to a user and not stop the script from running.  Display dialog and display alert both pause the script while waiting for the user.
    I'm confident I could do it in XCode.  But, I'm not ready to take on the efforts in mastering that just for this one application.
    Thank you very much!

    Regular AppleScript doesn't have anything but those modal dialogs, so you would have to use a separate application or something else such as AppleScriptObjC or RubyCocoa.  Starting in OS X 10.7 Lion, the AppleScript Editor has a Cocoa-AppleScript Applet template that will create an application where you can use Cocoa stuff via AppleScriptObjC without the need for Xcode - without using the Interface Editor though, you will need to create UI objects manually.
    I have a Cocoa-AppleScript template/example that uses a controller script with a few support handlers to create and use a message window with a scrolling text view that is not modal, if you want to take a look at that - it can be downloaded here.

  • Apple Remote Events & "display dialog"

    Hello,
    I try to setup an alert using remote Apple Event but it doesn't works :
    -- SCRIPT
    using terms from application "Finder"
    tell application "Finder" of machine "eppc://account:[email protected]"
    display dialog "Hello"
    end tell
    end using terms from
    -- END SCRIPT
    I get an error "Finder got an error: No user interaction allowed" Do you know why ?
    What best way to display a message on severals Mac using Applescript ?
    Thanks a lot.
    HDR

    IIRC, this is a permissions issue.
    On the remote machine, you are trying to run the command as user 'account'.
    If some other user is logged in on the other machine, you can't do what you want because user A can't take over control of an application being run by user B.
    Therefore this script will only run if 'account' is the active user on the other machine.
    'root' is the only user can can override this - root can affect other user's processes, but I'm not sure that running the remote command as root (which will require root login enabled) is the right solution, either.
    Another option may be to use some other system such as Growl which can overlay text messages on screen and, IIRC, has some network functionality.

  • Display Dialog with Hidden Answer

    Now Im trying to use a hidden answer dialog to get a password and pass it to the next step in my Automator Application. The code I have so far is:
    on run {input, parameters}
              set theScript to input
              tell me to activate
              display dialog "What is your password?" default answer "" with hidden answer
              set ACP to text returned of result
              set keychaincan to input & ACP
              return keychaincan as string
    end run
    I know this works without the hidden answer, and I cannot see why its failing with "with hidden answer" at the end.
    I get the automator error "Syntax Error. Expected end of line, etc. But found identifier."
    Any ideas?

    Automator has its own variation of several things such as display dialog - you can see the terminology provided by looking at Automator's scripting dictionary.  The Automator version of display dialog doesn't have a hidden answer parameter, so one workaround is to use something like System Events, which will wind up using the regular StandardAdditions version:
        tell application "System Events" to display dialog "What is your password?" default answer "" with hidden answer

  • Password Display Dialog Not Working

    on run {input, parameters}
    display dialog "Password:" default answer "" with hidden answer
    end run
    Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the above code? It doesn't work in Snow Leopard. I've found lots of examples all showing the same syntax.
    Error Message Received (with answer highlighted):
    Expected “given”, “with”, “without”, other parameter name, etc. but found identifier.
    If I remove the word answer, it works, but password is in clear-text, not hidden.

    Automator uses it's own dictionary, and one of the gotchas is that it's display dialog is different from the one in AppleScript's *Standard Additions* - it doesn't have several of the parameters, such as hidden answer or title.
    Normally you don't want to target another application with terminology that is not in it's dictionary (especially scripting addition stuff), but one workaround in this case is to put the dialog in a tell statement to another application, such as *System Events*:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    font-weight: normal;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into an Automator 'Run AppleScript' action">
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "System Events"
    activate
    display dialog "Password:" default answer "" with hidden answer
    end tell
    end run</pre>

  • No video and settings pop-up doesn't display

    I get audio but no video.  Tried to run through the troubleshooting steps but I can't complete them because the Settings dialog box doesn't display (right-click on a flash video box, Settings...).  All the other steps are correct.  Windows 7, IE9, flash 11.7.700.169
    I had IE 10 and thought it might be that since it was a recent upgrade so I downgraded to IE 9.  Uninstalled flash with uninstall utility and reinstalled.  Test boxes in Flash Player support pages show nothing, just a blank box, regardless of whether Flash is installed or uninstalled.
    update: video works and the settings dialog box does pop-up in youtube but neither in facebook.  I disabled hardware acceleration while I had it up in youtube, but it doesn't help facebook playback.
    update 2: when I uninstalled IE 9 as well, imbedded flash finally worked in IE8.  Reinstalled IE 9 and it's back to not working again. Any ideas?

    Hey Chris, uninstalling that KB update fixed the problem.  I tried the driver updates first but mine seemed up to date already (HP showed a newer driver for the Intel HD graphics, but it wouldn't install).
    For other's info, I have an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop quad core entertainment, Win7 SP1 64-bit.   AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT and Intel Graphics 3000 (BIOS 2111.0).
    AMD graphics driver v8.882.2.3000.
    Intel driver shows the same as AMD in Windows System Information, but the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel reports v8.15.10.2476.

  • XMP doesn't display proper info in Photoshop CS2 for Mac.

    Dear List members:
    I have just recently installed Creative Suite CS2 and begun to explore the functionality of XMP. After purchasing Bruce Fraser's book on Camera Raw for CS2, I downloaded Metalab (Pound Hill Software) and created my first custom XMP panel that can be seen under the file info in Photoshop when an image (digital photo) is open.
    The problem is that I noticed a few odd things and began to question myself if there is some kind of bug or a problem with my installation of CS2.
    1. The window that opens under the file info command has several categories of information on the left to be chosen from, in the following order:
    (1)Description, (2)Camera Data 1, (3)Camera Data 2, (4)Categories, (5)History, (6)IPTC Contact, (7)IPTC Content, (8)IPTC Image, (9)IPTC Status, (10)Adobe Stock Photos, (11)Origin, (12)Advanced
    The Camera Data 1 option when selected opens a panel in the file info window that seems to contain all the information it is supposed to contain. The Camera Data 2 panel, on the other hand, doesn't display any information at all. Although the fields are there, they are empty. The fields are:
    (1)Pixel Dimension X and Y, (2)Orientation, (3)Resolution X and Y, (4)Resolution Unit, (5)Compressed Bits per Pixel, (6)Color Space, (7)Light Source, (8)File Source.
    All these fields are empty but when looking at the same file under Bridge the information is there, displayed under the metadata menu.
    This is something I noticed "before" installing Metalab so I know it is not a compatibility issue generated by the installation of the software.
    After installing CS2 I noticed that CS1 remained installed in my system. The version I purchased of CS2 is the upgrade one. Since I have no use for CS1 as I am now totally converted to CS2, I would like to uninstall CS1. The following are some of the questions I have:
    1. How can I uninstall CS1 without causing any problems to my installation of CS1 ? Is there an uninstall utility with the software or will I have to uninstall the entire package manually ?
    2. My G5 came with only one internal 160 GB drive where I originally installed CS1. I then purchased another internal 400 GB HD and copied the original drive onto it. This week I am going to replace the original 160 GB drive with a second 400 GB drive so that I can do regular "mirror image" back-ups between the two drives. Shold I expect any problems as I remove the drive where I originally installed CS1 ? Since I used disk utility to "copy" the 160 GB drive onto the 400 GB drive, my understanding it that any Adobe software key or authorization was also transferred to the drive. Is this right ? In case it hasn't, how can I transfer this information so that after I remove the 160 GB drive I will not experience any problems when trying to run CS2 ?
    3. How can I fix the problem with the Camera Data 2 panel under the file info window and command ? I noticed that the folder that is supposed to hold the Custom File Info Panels (HD>Library>Application Support>Adobe>XMP>Custom File Info Panels) has files for CS1 and CS2. Could this be a problem ? There many more files with .dat extenson than there are with the .txt extension. Bruce Fraser specifically says that the ones with the .txt extension are the ones that hold the XMP templates for information related to the image files. The files I have in this folder with the .txt are:
    (1)Camera1_CS2.txt , (2)Camera1.txt , (3)Camera2_CS2.txt , (4)Camera2.txt , (5)Categories.txt , (6)History.txt , (7)IPTC_Contact.txt , (8)IPTC_Content.txt , (9)IPTC_Image.txt , (10)IPTC_Status.txt , (11)StockPhotoInfo.txt
    The only ones that have two separate files one each for CS1 ad CS2 are Camera 1 and Camera 2. Camera 2 seems to be the only that is now non-functional. What should I expect to happen if I were to manually uninstall the ones that relate to CS1 ? Could that cause any problems ?
    My apologies for the long post but I didn't really know how to make it shorter.

    The Photoshop and/or Bridge forums would be more likely places to get answers to your questions. This forum is inhabited more by programmer types interested in implementing the XMP specification in applications we write.
    I'd expect CS2 to ignore CS1 panels so I doubt that's the issue. Panels don't interfere with each other--they just offer different views of the data. In any case, move the extra panels to your desktop and see what happens.
    As far as I know, all you need to do on the Mac is drag the CS1 application folder to the trash to uninstall it.

  • How do I use Display Dialog to get back a date?

    Can anyone tell me how to use Display Dialog to get back a date?
    I am using the following code that does not work. It does not accept anything.  And I have searched high and low for an answer to my question and found nothing.
    repeat
           display dialog "When should I remind you (date)?" default answer ""
           try
                 if the text returned of the result is not "" then
                        set the requested_text to the date returned of the result as date
                        exit repeat
                end if
           on error
               beep
    end try
    endrepeat
    display dialog requested_text
    The code is based on what I found in AppleScript 1-2-3 (page 300). It shows examples for getting text and numbers but not one for dates.
    For what it is worth, my goal is to create a script that will convert an email from Evernote into an iCal Reminder. To do so, I want to ask the user (myself) for the reminder's date and time. I am assuming I need to ask for each separately. I also assume that once I get the date and time for the reminder, it should be relatively straightforward to 'make' a 'todo' with an alarm.
    Thanks in advance.
    -David

    Hi David,
    Try this:
    repeat
        set theCurrentDate to current date
        display dialog "When should I remind you (date)?" default answer (date string of theCurrentDate & space & time string of theCurrentDate)
        set theText to text returned of result
        try
            if theText is not "" then
                set theDate to date theText -- a date object
                exit repeat
            end if
        on error
            beep
        end try
    end repeat
    display dialog (date string of theDate & space & time string of theDate)

  • Mac Mini Doesn't Display through Philips Tube HDTV

    I have a Philips tube HDTV with a VGA connector in the back, and used the DVI-VGA connector that came with my new Mac Mini to connect. I don't have a computer monitor at home. The TV doesn't display anything.
    So then I took the Mac Mini over to a friend's. He has a VGA monitor, and so he ran the Mac Mini through setup and set it to the lowest possible display settings. I came back here, rebooted and plugged it back in; still no display.
    Then I tried this:
    "First thing to try is to boot the mini into safe mode by holding down the shift key as it boots up. This should allow it to boot, and then give you access to the display preference pane to adjust the settings back to those that worked.
    If that doesn't work, try disconnecting the TV, and rebooting the Mac with no display attached. Once it has fully booted and enough time has passed to allow the desktop to be displayed, reconnected the TV. This should force the mini to boot into a low-res mode that works with just about anything, then when you reconnect the display, either cause it to auto-sense the correct resolutions, or give you access to display preferences."
    This didn't work either. Any suggestions?

    Hi Alan,
    Check your TV manual to see what resolutions your VGA/RGB connector on your TV will accept. Being a HDTV it is likely to be from 480p to at least 1080i.
    You then set the resolution in your Display preference pane to 640x480 and you should get a picture on your TV. The trick is to set it when you can't see anything! Attaching to another device may not help because the Mac detects that device when you set the Display and will know its not that when attached again to your TV. When attached to your TV it is setting another resolution it thinks will work. It is clearly guessing the wrong screen resolution when you do connect it.
    I overcame this situation myself using a VNC client. That requires you to have another computer you can use to control your Mac Mini via VNC. You can then access the Display pane via VNC and set the 640x480 resolution which will work.
    For setting 1080i (and the VNC process) please see:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060319073027371&query=1080i%2BMac %2BMini
    I am guessing you can also use an S Video adapter - available from Apple - to connect to an S Video port your TV may also have. That won't help with the VGA connection though.
    Hope this helps.

  • Secondary Cost Element Values doesn't display in Profit Center Report

    Hi everyone,
    I'm having a problem with our Profit Center plan/actual/variance reports wherein it doesn't display the postings I made to the Secondary cost element when I executed an assessment cycle (KSU5). I already set in the configuration that all postings to be done in the cost centers, should have a parallel posting to the profit center assigned to it. I can see the postings in my cost center reports, but not in my profit center report. Could I have missed out on any procedure to enable the secondary cost element parallel posting in my profit centers? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    it might be the configuration of the library or some parameter in the report (record type should be 0 and 2 for actual values, where 2 stands for distributed values and 1 and 3 for planned values)
    but it also might be that the reconciliation is done between different CC and same PC
    - check your CC organisation asignment
    - if sender cost center and receiver cost center have tha same PC it is probably the reason
    - I had that problem my self and didn't solve it
    cheers
    matej
