Browsing bug when listing songs by artist

OK, I'll try and explain this as best as possible.
Given the following:
1) You have songs by an artist, from ONE album, with an album tag on the file
2) You have other songs by the SAME artist, without an album tag on the file
In this case, if you go on your iPod and browse by artist, the songs WITHOUT an album will NOT appear under that artist
Next case:
1) You have songs by an artist, from MORE THAN ONE album, with an album tag on the file
2) You have other songs by the SAME artist, without an album tag on the file
In this case, if you go on your iPod and browse by artist, the songw WITHOUT album WILL appear under "All"
So the fix is, you either need to have more than one album by the same artist in order to see the songs WITHOUT an album tag under the "Artist" view in the iPod.
In both cases, all the files appear under Songs.
Hope this makes sense, if not, relpy and I'll help if I can.
~M

Yes, there is; tag your other songs with an album name. You can look them up in iTunes, or http://www.cddb.com/ or some other site that will tell you what album they are from. Then, you will see all your songs and the albums when browsing by artist. See my reply to the other user that had this problem for more details; I seem to have forgotten to cut/paste the fix in my original post

  • Ipod only lists songs, no artists, will not mount or appear in itunes

Looking for some assitance: have a 5g ipod with multiple problems that was given to me to fix by a friend. First problem: It is a windows formatted ipod and it is not recognized in windows or by itunes. The ipod plays the songs stored on it (it's not completely dead), however, when plugged in via usb the ipod will not show up as a drive or in itunes. I have followed every piece of advice on how to fix a problem like this from this forum, apple support and other forums, but nothing has worked. The battery shows that it is receiving a charge from the machine, but it is not recognized.
The second problem is that the ipod will not show artist or album, only songs. If I select artist from the menu, it shows me only song titles. Same thing for Albums. very strange. I believe it may have something to do with the version (1.0) that i see in Settings/About menu, but I don't know enough to say for sure. I've tried running the ipod updater, but it does not recognize the ipod either.
    Can anyone help?
    5g Ipod   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

camoracer, you are right, there is no fault to cause the ipod not to show trackdata, so it must not have been put on there,
    back to the big problem:
Id say a number of things it could be:
USB CABLE (try a different cable)
USB PORT (try a different port)
DRIVER (make sure the ipod drivers are installed0
And as a final try, put the ipod in hardware disk mode ( centre button and menu [ipod resets] as soon as it has started to reset press centre button and play/pause together, a tick should appear See:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651 for more info.)
and see if it shows up then.

I used Match, and now there are artists missing when I search by artist, yet they are in my library when I search by song. If they are in many song list,  why aren't they in my artist list? Also I can't sort my songs list by artist on iPhone,  so their music is basically lost in space....help

It's not clear from your post, but you do realise
that if you import a cd as a compilation, it will not
appear under artists? This is done to save the iPod
being cluttered up with single artists entries who
might have only one song listed.
I wasn't aware of that. It's true that I haven't been using the "compilation" tag for a long time. I've only started using it with iTunes 7 as otherwise with Coverflow I would have one album cover for each artist in a compilation. Before that my compilations weren't tagged as such as that is quite probably why each artist from compilations showed up when browsing by artists.

  • How can I get my ipod to list the "album artist" instead of "artist" in the music menu, but still show the artist with the featured artist when a song plays?

For example, I am putting Kanye West's album "808's & Heartbreak" on my ipod. The track "Amazing" features Young Jeezy. So in iTunes, I list the track name as "Amazing", the artist as "Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy",  the album artist as "Kanye West", and the album as "808's & Heartbreak". What I want is for my iPod to have a list of album artists instead of artists, so that I can find the song "Amazing" under "Kanye West" instead of "Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy" or "808's & Heartbreak".
And when the song plays, it should say:
    Amazing
    Kanye West ft. Young Jeezy
    808's & Heartbreak
Is there a way I can do that? I tried using the "album artist" field thinking it would do what I wanted to do, but it didnt. I also tried using the "sort artist" field and typed "Kanye West" in there, but that didnt work either. I wish iTunes was simpler and easier or atleast CAME WITH A MANUAL. Any help would be greatly appreciated THanks

Have you tried a different pair of earbuds/headphones to rule out a pair of damaged/faulty ones?  You might also want to make sure the headphones are securely and firmly seated in Nano's headphone jack.  Lastly, check the headphone jack for any signs of debris or damage.  You may need to have the headphone jack replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.
I assume this static is present on any track you listen to versus only particular ones?

  • Songs listed under same artist in iTunes, but not on iPod!?

I have six songs with Marilyn Manson in iTunes; four of them are from the "Lest We Forget"-album. For the other two, I do not have any album-information.
In iTunes, all six songs are listed under Marilyn Manson. On my iPod, however, when I browse to Marilyn Manson, only the four songs from the "Lest We Forget"-album are listed. The other two songs are missing when I browse by artist. However, when I browse by song, the two songs are there all right. And when I play the songs, Marilyn Manson is listed as the artist.
Anyone experienced anything similar? I know this could be the case if the name of the artist is spelled differently for the different songs, but this is not the case here. No exstra spaces in the artistname, exactly the same spelling for all six songs. Still, my iPod is not able to list all songs correctly under the same artist... Any solutions?
    cheers,
    pj

nope, there is no "all albums". I do not actually get to choose any albums at all; the iPod just goes directly from Marilyn Manson to display all four songs in the "Lest We Forget"-album. Just like when you just have one album for an artist and iPod just skips the "choose album"-screen.
Anyway, seems like this is a bug and has been discussed before:

  • Why does apple tv music search no longer provides lists of songs or artists based on inputing a few letters?

When using my first generation apple tv and the music search capability, I no longer get a list of options generation when inputing a few letters of a song or artist.  In the past (up until a month or two ago) if I input "led" in the search, I would immediately get many options of songs, artists, etc. showing up in the search screen.  Now, if I put in "led" I must go to the next "page" and it will provide a much more limited selection.  If I don't know the exact name of an artist or song, searching becomes less of an actual search and more of, you better know exactly what you are looking for or you won't find it.  I was told by a service rep that there must have been a software upgrade that changed this function.  Does anybody have any info to confirm that, or is there some other problem?  I've updated all the software, rebooted the system, etc.  If it's a change to the function, it has renedered it almost useless, and that's a shame

I have exactly the same problem. I already did a factory restore! How can this be fixed?

  • When locating a song via "Artists," the menu goes straight to albums

I think this has to do with my recent iPod update, as it didn't used to happen- when I scroll through the artist names all are present- but when you select an artist, for many of them (not all, not sure why not) it goes straight to the album of that artist of which you have the most songs. For example I have CCR's Chronicle, Volume 1, and when I go to CCR via Artists it goes straight to the songs in this album: I have no opportunity to hit "All" and view all of the music I have from them. The other songs are available, however by searching through the "Songs" list. That's just incredibly tedious and annoying. Does anyone else know how to fix this or is anyone having similar difficulty? Thanks.

Two things often contribute to this.
One is that some songs might be tagged as Part Of A Compilation (see the Get Info on those songs/albums) in which case they will not show up under the artist.
Second, is that an artist needs at least two different Albums identified for their songs to all list under the artist. In other words, if you import a CD with album name then add a handful of misc songs without album names associated, those handful will not show up under the artist name.
But add an album name to at least one of those handful of misc. songs and then ALL of the songs should show up under the artist.
You don't have to do it for all of them, just enough to have two different albums identified with the artist. But in general, it is a good idea to make sure your tunes have Song name, artist name, and album name associated with them as a minimum.

  • I've found no way to sort.  For example, if I type the group "Rush" into the search bar, I get a list of songs recorded by rush and literally thousands of other songs and artists with the word rush in them. There is; however, no way to sort the results.

In the Search box click on the black Arrow and UNTICK the Search Entire Library.
Then the Search results in Songs view will be displayed in the main Grid and you can sort them by clicking on the column headers.
You can also turn on the column browser which can help with filtering

  • Songs listed under incorrect artist in Ipod (listed correctly in Itunes)

So I'm having an issue getting songs to appear under the correct artist.
The artist's name is 3lau.  several of his songs are listed with him as the artist.  Other list him as the Album artist.  It is all grouped correctly on Itunes.
When i sync my ipod (nano 6th gen) I cannot find the artist "3lau"  I find all his songs under "Porter Robinson."  Porter robinson is never listed as an artist.
I've looked through the itunes listing of artists and excluding those artists that i do not have checked music, the list doesn't match what the ipod shows.  Why?  Is there a way to force them to match?
I'd email Apple support, but like most conceited worldwide companies you can't actually contact them for help.  So i'm asking the nice people on the community site that do apple's work for free.
    Thank you all.

    Hi TheHairyBaboon!
I've got some information for you that may help you with this issue. You should check the "Group Compilations" setting on your iPod nano to see whether that option is on or off. More information on this setting can be found on page 16 of the iPod nano 6th generation User Guide:
    manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1551/en_US/iPod_nano_6thgen_User_Guide.pd f
You can also find more information on compilation groupings and how to get them to behave the way you expect here:

  • Is there a way to increase the font size for the "songs" and "artists" lists in the new music app for iPad 2 (iOS 5)? It is too small for me.

is there really no fix for this?
It would depend on your definition of "Fix"
Your iPod touch running OS 4.2 has a ZOOM feature which will enable you to see the screen more clearly.
To turn Zoom on or off got to:
Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom and tap the Zoom On/Off switch.
    _To Zoom in or out_:
Double-tap the screen with three fingers. By default, the screen is magnified 200 percent. If you manually change the magnification (by using the tap-and-drag gesture, described below), iPod touch automatically returns to that magnification when you zoom in by double-tapping with three fingers.
Increase magnification: With three fingers, tap and drag toward the top of the screen (to increase magnification) or toward the bottom of the screen (to decrease magnification). The tap-and-drag gesture is similar to a double-tap, except you don’t lift your fingers on the second tap—instead, drag your fingers on the screen. Once you start dragging, you can drag with a single finger.
    _Move around the screen_:
When zoomed in, drag or flick the screen with three fingers. Once you start dragging, you can drag with a single finger so that you can see more of the screen. Hold a single finger near the edge of the display to pan to that side of the screen image. Move your finger closer to the edge to pan more quickly. When you open a new screen, Zoom always goes to the top-middle of the screen.
    _Large Text_:
Large Text lets you make the text larger in alerts, and in Calendar, Contacts, Mail, Messages, and Notes. You can choose 20-point, 24-point, 32-point, 40-point, 48-point, or 56-point text.
Set the text size: In Settings, choose General > Accessibility, tap Large Text, then tap the text size you want.
I hope this has helped a little - other than this option I think it pretty much is what it is.
BTW - This information can be found on page 208 of the iPod Touch iOS 4.2 Users Guide.
    Best wishes..

  • My songs are listed as albums, artists, etc.

I got the new 30gig i-pod video today. I bought an album from i-tunes and loaded it on my new i-pod. The problem is that it listed all of the songs in every catagory on the i-pod. So when I go into the albums folder it shows all of the songs in the album instead of the name of the album. It also lists all of the songs as artists as well. Oh and another issue is it's listing the songs alphabetically instead of my track listing! What do I do about this? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • I've imported several CDs that are "collections", with songs by various artists.  Only a PORTION of the song info appears in iTunes, and, when a song is "clicked-on" to play it, a message appears that the "song could not be found".  Any ideas ?

The CDs are imported into the "iTunes Media" folder, under "Compilations".   Each CD has a folder, with the name of the CD.  However, EACH SONG in the folder is assigned a sequential number as a prefix before the song's name.  For example "2-1 Sunshine of Your Love."  This prefix, I believe, prevents the song from being imported into the iTunes library.  The song's name appears in the iTunes library (with the number prefix), BUT no other song info (artist, CD name, time, etc.) shows in the iTunes library.   I am NOT designating these CD's as "complilations", but somehow, iTunes is arbitrarily assigning them to this "Compilations" folder, and then assigning sequential numbers to each song.    I am confused.  (My only remedy is to MANUALLY remove the prefix number from each song in the CD folder, within the COMPILATIONS folder, then "re-import" it into iTunes.  Cumbersome.)    Thanks in advance for any opinion, tips or guidance.

The numeric prefixes in filenames are probably the optional disc number, followed by the track number. iTunes will pick up the Compilation flag from the Gracenote CDDB database if you ripped the tracks with iTunes, or the flag may have been set earlier if these are existing tracks you have imported into a new library.  The iTunes naming convention is <Artist>\<Album>\[<D#>-]<T##> <Name>.<Ext> where Album Artist is used instead of Artist if not blank, and Compliations is used instead of Artist when Part of a compilation is true. Empty Artist or Album values are replaced with Unknown Artist or Unknown Album respectively. With Windows, file and folder names are limited to 40 characters. If more than one file is added with the same details subsequent tracks get suffixes to separate them.
If iTunes can't find a file that usually means that it has been moved after it was added to the library. Select a single broken track and press CTRL+I to Get Info. Look on the summary tab at the location that iTunes expects to find the file. Where is it really? Post back both paths and I might be able to figure out what has happened, and suggest a fix.
