BT/Yahoo webmail platform contains unwanted ads

Hi all
Does anyone else object to ads being part of the BT/Yahoo webmail platform. When I joined BT last September I was surprised to find that ads were allowed. I've used many web mail platforms from many ISPs and this is the first one I've seen that contains ads, most of which are aimed at a U.S. audience.
I'm even seeing ads that question my testosterone levels, featuring pictures of a rather shapely young female - I don't need or want this *c*r*a*p* - I'm 64 years old and my testosterone levels are still pretty good, thank you very much.
As if BT aren't making enough money from their fees that we all pay.
If you also dislike these ads - please keep this thread alive

I started out with nothing and I still got most of it left

Of course I use an email client, at home that is, and web mail when I'm not at home.
Why should I have to go to the trouble of filtering out these ads when they shouldn't be there in the first place.
I suspect they are there as part of the deal between BT and Yahoo.
I did hear that BT were moving to their own platform, but that seems to have died the death.

  • Firefox won't load BT Yahoo Webmail page

When I try to go to BT Yahoo Webmail (bt.yahoo.com/webmail) I get a page which says 'Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at login.yahoo.com.' - as it would if I were offline. This only happens with Firefox. I can access it ok with Internet Explorer (which I do not wish to use). I also can not access bt.yahoo.com itself.
Also, Mozilla Thunderbird can not access my email (though it has done so with no problems for well over a year). It says 'An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server mail.btinternet.com responded:' (though it doesn't say how it responded.
The other thing I can't do on Firefox is play the BBC iPlayer (but IE can) and I couldn't access this page on Firefox Support - I'm having to do this in IE.
    I have already:
    Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox
Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash Player
Installed the Active X plugin for Flash Player
    Upgraded Zone Alarm (free version)
    Upgraded Avast (free version)
(these two have been running for ages and not given problems before)
Shut down both antivirus programmes and tried again.
Checked as many settings as I can find that might be blocking access - though nothing seems obvious.
Read lots of 'help' forums and FAQs.
    Drunk more coffee.
Tried it all again, of course remembering to switch it off and on again a few times in between reinstallations and tweaks etc.
Is this a known issue? I am now almost completely insane. Thanks.

I have the same problem can't figure it out, in the meantime I installed IETab and got it to work that way, it's not a permanent solution but for now it's an option

  • Juno and Yahoo Webmail: Firefox makes the attach file button in webmail disappear and other web browsers don't

Using Juno and Yahoo webmail (only on this computer, not my others) the attach file button loads but then disappears when creating a new email or replying. All other web browsers allow me to attach files using these two webmail sites. This does not affect other sites like school applications to upload files for class in Firefox.

As mentioned in the original post, the user IS the owner and the permissions are WIDE open for the user. I have also tried to disable the anti-virus - no luck. The problem is ONLY happening in Firefox. Chrome and IE work perfect. There is also no problem in Windows. The user can add/remove/edit files in the directory. Right now the solution seems to be to use Chrome. I'm not excited about that, but at this point, the only option.

  • How to set iPhoto to use yahoo webmail rather than mail.app

When emailing from within iPhoto using the email icon or via the share menu option in the task bar, mail.app launches. I prefer to use (Yahoo) webmail, rather than use an email client, so how do I change this setting?
    Thx in advance.

    Mansel
Simply: you can’t, I’m afraid. This feature requires an E-Mail Client that supports Apple Script. Yahoo Mail is a service (not an client) that’s accessed via a Web Browser and it’s not Apple Scriptable.
    FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Yahoo Webmail Blue Progress Bar Freezes adding attachments

Using Mac OS X, Leopard 10.5.6 and Apple Safari 3.2.1. There is a bug when using Apple Safari with Yahoo Webmail. Whenever you attach a file (while composing a message), the blue progress bar (fills in behind the website address window) freezes. Everything continues working, but the blue progress bar freezes abouit half way. This always happens when attaching a file. The ONLY way to get functionality back is to reset safari. Also, if you open another tab, that other tab functions correctly even if the first tab (with Yahoo) is still frozen. All updates have been applied to the computer that are available. The blue progress bar is safari's way of telling you a website is loading.

    Hello,
This issue only happens when using Yahoo Webmail while using the Mac version of Safari.
Only a RESET safari returns normal operation to the blue menu bar.
    Here are steps to reproduce:
1.) Login into Yahoo Webmail (The new version, not the classic version), compose a message, attach a file. The blue menu bar that fills in behind the website address will fill in about 1/2 way and stay there. You can continue to finish and send your email, but the blue bar stays frozen. If you open a new tab, the new blue progress bar works fine, but the first tab remains frozen. Again, everything is function. The only way to fix is to RESET safari.
I have tried other accounts and computers. It even happens at the local Apple retail store. Oddly enough, this issue does NOT affect the Windows XP version of Safari.

  • Postfix blocking Yahoo/webmail

    Hi
I have successfully setup Postfix using osx.topicdesk's Frontline Spam Defence for OS X and this works very well at blocking most spam.
However we have a problem with certain emails getting blocked. Today my colleague at our other office tried to send us an email using his Yahoo webmail service and it was blocked by Postfix at our end.
    Here is the log entry:
Jan 31 12:33:45 eddie postfix/smtpd[12618]: warning: 82.118.112.81: hostname 82-118-112-81.no-dns.keme.net verification failed: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
81.118.112.81 is the IP address of our remote site. keme.net is our ISP at that site. My guess is that mail sent with Yahoo webmail uses Yahoo's mail server but reports the IP address of the client connected to Yahoo when communicating with the recipient smtp server. And for some reason this does not resolve correctly in some way for postfix?
Interestingly, the mailer daemon bounce message gives the wrong error message to the sender:
    195.137.57.151 does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 5.1.1 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table
    Giving up on 195.137.57.151.
Does anyone have a clue for me?
    Many thanks
    James

Sorry to be not clear. The sender is sitting in our remote office and all mail which comes from the mail server at that office seems to come through fine. The sender however prefers to use Yahoo webmail and therefore the message was sent from Yahoo's server and not our server at that office.
When he received a bounce message I looked in the log for something to match against and the only thing which I could find was a message apparently from our server at the remote office which had a warning message as I described. I wondered if Yahoo's mail server was reporting the IP address of the sender (which would be the same as the IP address of our server as he was on that LAN) instead of Yahoo's own IP but thinking about this that is very unlikely. I think you are right that this log entry is for a different message.
I know you need more log but I will have to wait until it happens again now that I have turned the log up. In the mean time:
    1. What is this warning message trying to tell me?
31 12:33:45 eddie postfix/smtpd12618: warning: 82.118.112.81: hostname 82-118-112-81.no-dns.keme.net verification failed: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
    2. How would Yahoo Mail be talking to the wrong server? The bounce message has the correct IP address. However you might well be right as I could not find any log entries for a rejection during that time frame other than the one which you think is not related.

  • The FOUR versions of BT Yahoo Webmail

I have been informed that there are currently 4 versions of BT Yahoo Webmail starting with Classic Mail.
Can anyone let the community know where these are described and what the differences are ?

Many thanks for that post FC68. This is disturbing news. I haven't time to digest it all and investigate right now. I certainly haven't had such a message, and I refused to switch from the Classic mail interface, so I trust that I am not regarded as having consented to such interception.
What is particularly disturbing is this:
If you consent to this ATOS [Additional Terms of Service] and communicate with non-Yahoo! users using the Services, you are responsible for notifying those users about this feature".
...so we have to first email non-BTYahoo friends that such interception and analysis by BTYahoo/Yahoo of our private communication matter, maybe of a commercially sensitive nature, will take place? Before sending the actual email we wish to send, and to which they will need to reply to either give or withold permission - before we send the intended message? In case they refuse to have their email address and name logged for targeted advertising, spamming (and that is what it is, nothing but spamming, IMHO)? And if BTYahoo customers don't do this, and BT/BTYahoo/Yahoo reckon they have absolved themselves of responsibility by imposing such a glib condition hidden away in the latest T&Cs, does this mean that customers are responsible for allowing such private data and PII to be revealed to a third party? Does this mean that BT customers who don't inform non-BTyahoo communicators will be technically in breach of RIPA, which prohibits the unauthorised interception of communications?
This places a huge and unreasonable burden upon BT customers. I think the Interception of Communications Minister, Sir Paul Kennedy, should know about this disgraceful attempt to embroil BT customers in illegal activity. Because that is just what it appears to be. Does BT really think that every single customer will ask permission first? Surely BT has a duty of care here towards its customers, and must warn us very clearly indeed that these steps must be taken. I have seen no such warnings on any BT site, nor have I received emails warning of such a drastic change of policy, that has potentially serious legal implications for individual customers. I am staggered by such blundering ineptitude.
I wonder which ToS are the relevant ones. Yahoo, BTYahoo, BT throw dozens of links to different ToS, Conditions, Privacy Policies, it's a complete dog's breakfast. I thought that Consumer Protection regulations demand that such things are clear and easy to understand.
For instance, are the latest ones these:
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/uk/yahoo/utos/en-gb/
    or these:
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/uk/yahoo/utos-173.html
    or these:
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/uk/bt/terms/mail/atos.html
    or these:
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/mail/en-us/
How do we know which are the most recently updated ones, when there are links sending us hither and thither?
The last link above - according to the URL a Yahoo US site  - is the only one that includes "If you consent to this ATOS and communicate with non-Yahoo! users using the Services, you are responsible for notifying those users about this feature." as far as i can see - please correct me if I am wrong - but that condition is not on the BTYahoo Mail terms  nor on the BTYahoo Additional TOS
So does that US site supercede or predate the others? If none of these pages - all BT or UK based - have that condition, then how can it be argued it applies to BT/UK customers?
    On that same page:
    http://btsupport.custhelp.com/app/answers/blank/a_id/43585
    we have
"If any of these documents contradict each other, unless otherwise specified, the terms will apply in the order set out above."  What order is that? Topmost first? Bottommost first? Chronological order?- in which case where are the date/time stamps please? Do new ToS get added to the top or the bottom of the pile?
But the bottom line, as has been pointed out many times, for BTYahoo Users: is"If you are accessing the Services logged in via a BTYahoo! ID, then the terms of this ATOS apply to you with respect to the Services but BT Plc remains responsible for providing all services within the BTYahoo! Service and handling your personal data. Clickhere for more information." (my bold)
So may we have one set of ToS and Conditions from BT please, i.e. those who are responsible for our service? Always with a date stamp at the bottom, clearly visible, and a rider stating clearly "These ToS were updated on xx/xx/xxxx at xx:xx hours and supercede all previous versions" and a warning that the ToS have changed, whenever this happens, posted clearly on the BT website, and emailed to all BT customers - just as BT emails us warning of changes to email accounts, for instance.
I don't remember getting such an email when the BT/BTYahoo additional ToS were added, or when the Updated ones were updated. Here's what StumbleUpon did last October:
As part of this effort, we have updated our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to cover these new features, to be more transparent to our users, and to be easier to understand.
We know you (usually) enjoy reviewing legal forms as much as you enjoy doing your laundry, but please take some time to read through these changes (perhaps while you're doing your laundry). To make things easier, here are some updates we have made:
The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy now cover our newest products and features, such as our mobile and web applications and the ability to join StumbleUpon using your Facebook and Google accounts.
As you know, StumbleUpon is a personalized content discovery service, so our primary goal in collecting data is to improve the content recommendations we make to you. In our updated Privacy Policy, we provide a fuller explanation of the data we collect, how we use it, and the options we provide regarding your personal information.
In our mission to help you discover great content from across the Web, we clarify in our Terms of Service that while StumbleUpon refers and recommends its content, most of this content is controlled by third parties.
We have inserted headings in both the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for ease of reference, and made some clarifying legal changes.
The Terms of Service will be effective for existing users as of Oct. 15, 2012. The update to the Privacy Policy is effective immediately. To read them in full, please visit our new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. We hope you find these updates helpful and clear.

  • Safari Blue Progress Bar and Yahoo Webmail

I have noticed that using Safari with Yahoo Webmail yields the odd behavior that when you attach a file from your computer, the blue progress bar up in the middle of the safari window freezes at some point. Everything works, but until you reset safari, the blue bar stays frozen.

  • BT Yahoo Webmail Problems since latest redesign

    Hi
My wife and I both use the BT Yahoo webmail to check our emails. Since the latest redesign we've experienced some issues with the functionality of the service.
In particular, when we log into the Inbox initially everything is fine. We can check emails, send emails and move between folders etc. After a while however moving between folders (e.g. Inbox to Spam) or moving between pages of the Inbox becomes unresponsive. Refreshing the Inbox also becomes unresponsive.
The only fix, which is only temporary, is to log out and back in again. The service will work OK for a while before showing the same problems.
Does anyone know why this is happening? It seems to occur on different computers and on different browsers.

Its just the way webmail is, it can be very slow and can lock up. Its better to use an e-mail program to access your mail, then you can move stuff around very quickly between folders, and even between different accounts.

  • Yahoo webmail "attachment loader" seems to crash using Firefox 4

When you attempt to attach something (eg a pic) to an Yahoo webmail email, Yahoo starts an "attachement loader". It seems to start okay. Then, while trying to attach multiple files, the window simply stops responding. It's clear the "attachment loader" has died or is hung up.
I do NOT have the issue when using Chrome.

New information and answers to the questions:
    1) I've never used dropbox on this machine, so that isn't the case
    2) I use Firefox as my browser and don't touch Safari unless it is a site that Firefox balks at. I did all the hardware scans, software scans, resetting prefs, and PRAM as well, almost every day.
New info: I had to do a complete system format and reinstall. It actually seems to have solved the problem and corrected a few things that the recent updates hadn't resolved (the disk sound on sleep-wake didn't work until I installed the update on a new system install). I think the issue had to do with either the recent Java or Airport updates and I haven't installed them this time due to that fear. What forced me to do a complete install was the computer wouldn't hold an internet connection *at all*, even when directly plugged into the router via ethernet. System time got messed up and keychain passwords got hosed too if they related to recent internet/network connections. I wish I had more info to share but that's it. Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to keep this open for now as I am interested in seeing if anything else could explain this issue.
I opened a bug report at the Apple Dev. site (https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/110/wo/klAiofleLooe0 XCbERCOUM/5.79.28.0.9) as well.

  • New Yahoo webmail and Apple Safari now NOT supported!!

This is really frustrating, but when you open Yahoo webmail now, you get a message saying Apple Safari is NOT supported. What a joke!! They support mozilla and firefox for mac, but not Safari. In order to use Safari, you have to use the "old" Yahoo Webmail system.

As a fellow yahoo user when I got my mac I found out quickly that yahoo is not very mac friendly. It does seem that the browser priority goes from IE on windows to Firefox to Safari. And I do experience (especially with yahoo) that Safari gets left out a little. I switched to os x mail right away after getting my mac and never looked back. Now I get frustrated just to use yahoo webmail cause I can't find anything..the search has always been bad...
    Don't know if that helps!

  • BT Yahoo webmail not deleting messages from POP se...

A client of mine accesses her personal emails via her webmail BT Yahoo account linked to her BT Internet broadband account. She also accesses another email account set up via Mail Accounts in Mail Options. The correct username, password and POP server settings have been entered and under Advanced Settings the box for "Retrieve new email only" is ticked and "Leave mail on POP server" is not ticked.
Today we discovered that her mailbox (on the server for the other account) was full and sending mail delivery failure messages to senders. I have logged onto the mail server and deleted all the messages, but we cannot work out why BT Yahoo webmail is not deleting them in the first place.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Thank you, both.
Forward option: I think this may well be the only option, although when you 'reply to' emails addressed to that non-BT address using this method there is more user-intervention required in that the related email account is not selected automatically. This way the default account is selected and if you're not concentrating it's possible to reply with the 'wrong' account.
Logging off and on again: this has already been tried.
I will update this post after trying the 'forward' option.
    Thanks.

  • How do I permanently block unwanted ads on-line?

An ad for Consumer News that's somehow associated with Google about an amazing offer has kept popping up and preventing altogether my getting to anything else on my laptop. I'm hoping someone will be able to tell me how I can block that thoroughly obnoxious ad and any other unwanted ads.

If excess popups are occuring when you load websites, you may have disabled popup blocking. See [[Pop-up blocker]] for steps to enable.
The most likely cause of excess popups on sites that should not have them, such as Google search pages, is spyware.
    # Ensure you don't have any Firefox extensions that may be affecting the behavior of websites. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] for instructions on testing whether extensions are causing a problem.
    2. See [[Is my Firefox problem a result of malware]] to determine whether spyware is likely causing the issue
If you determine malware is the problem, You can run and update the following '''free''' antivirus software:

  • Can I remove the yahoo toolbar, it contains things that I will never use?

I have just installed the latest Firefox. The result of this has been the introduction of a new and extended Yahoo toolbar that contains what I think are APS egFACE BOOK. I will never use any of these and so they are just glueing up the screen with rubbish. Also Yahoo is trying to mimic any Google search that I do and is so confusing me. Deleteing Yahoo seems the answer that I need.

I downloaded the new version of Firefox from the screen that automatically appeared when I sign onto mozilla. There has been a yahoo toolbar at the top of my screen for a few years, but it has been very discreet and never active.
