There is a bug on LV 8.2 "get type and creator" vi
i tried it on a G5 : perfect
on an intel machine the file type is reversed : JPEG becomes GEPJ, AIFF becomes FFIA
a bit annoying ...

Please excuse me for not fully understanding the distinction you are drawing here. I think you are saying that INDEPENDENTLY FILES HAVE:
a). a type
b). an extension
These are somehow correlated in Windows. When I remove the .jpg extension from a file name indeed I see the "blank icon" and right clicking the icon to expose the properties shows that it has file type "File" where it used to be "JPEG image." When I use the Get Type and Creator.vi I still see ????.
I would like to understand exactly the distinction you are drawing, and exactly how to see the problem you are reporting. Please be so kind as to dictate a very specific list of instructions with which this can be reproduced. If it requires using commands in the command line, please specify exact syntax so that isn't a hurdle in and of itself.

PS - Another idea just hit me - is it possible that you have the folder options item "hide known file extensions" checked? I think this is default in XP, and perhaps you are simply not seeing the extension of your jpg files since windows is hiding them. If that's the case, but you DO see extension, your file names may actually be something like myFile.jpg.jpg, where the trailing .jpg are just being hidden from you. It sounds like you're familiar with how windows distinguishes file types and extensions, but I thought I would at least throw that out there, since it is a bit subtle.

Dreamweaver setting wrong file type and creator codes

First of all, I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 on an Intel-based
Mac, with Dreamweaver CS3 9.0 build 3481.
I have a site defined where I connect to my web server via
FTP. On my server, I just upgraded my forum software to PHPBB 3.0,
which created a new /forums/ directory. My plan is to use
Dreamweaver to download that new /forums/ directory to my local
site where I can edit the files. Inside the forums folder are
several types of files, like ".php" files, ".htm" files, ".gif"
files, etc.
So, upon downloading the /forums/ folder to my local machine
by dragging and dropping it (in Dreamweaver) from the remote site
to the local site, I noticed that Dreamweaver insists on setting
HFS file type and creator codes for files it recognizes, based on
the filename extension.
I've connected to the same server using the Finder and
Transmit, and copied the remote /forums/ folder over to my local
machine. Neither of those copies have files with file types and
creator codes set, meaning they aren't actually set on the remote
files and that this is indeed something Dreamweaver is doing on the
fly as it downloads the files.
I'm wondering if there's any way possible to disable this
behavior, and just download the files like they are on the server?
(File extension only). To make matters worse, on my Intel-based
Mac, it's not even setting the proper codes, as you can see in the
following image:

Notice for the ".php" document, it's attempting to set a file
type of 'TEXT' and a creator code of 'DmWr' (DreamWeaver's creator
code), but because the Dreamweaver developers didn't bother to take
into account the byte-ordering differences between PowerPC Macs and
Intel Macs, the codes are written in reverse: 'TEXT' becomes
'TXET', and 'DmWr' becomes 'rWmD'. (If you're going to use
low-level routines such as FSSetCatalogInfo() to set the file types
and creator codes, you need to call CFSwapInt32HostToBig() on the
OSType values before doing so, to make sure they're in Big-endian
format).
Anyone know where the conversion information is stored?

Creator codes are totally deprecated in snow leopard. as for a workaround you can use something like this.

Replacing Type and Creator in InDesign Mac

Hello Everyone:
Our plant uses a process that FTPs InDesign files to Unix servers for storage and then FTPs them back down to local Macs for work. In the process the file is stripped of filetype and creator.
I have been tasked with writing a module that can fit in an InDesign plugin that will identify which version an InDesign document was created in, and then fix the type and creator. Does anyone have similar experience on Macs using the Adobe InDesign SDK?
My primary platform is Win, so any assistance I can receive would be greatly appreciated.

As the help for that functions says: "Windows and UNIX You cannot use file types and creators. Trying to set the type or creator of a file results in an error."

File type and creator are backwards

Acrobat 8 running on Intel based mac running OSX 10.4.11.
I have Acrobat using watched folders, but the pdfs it creates have the file name and creator backwards, 'FDP' and 'ORAC'. This doesnt happen all the time, it seems to be different depending on the filename. Names beginning with P will usually be wrong, names beginning with numbers will usually be right.

Be interested if anyone else has found a solution for this as these pdfs copy onto our archive system, but it hasnt got a clue what to do with them as it doesnt know what they are.

I've tried searching for those files on my computer without any luck. Is there a way for you to contact your contractor in order to see if he originally sent them? Has your program ever worked upon getting it from your contractor?

PSE 8 Organizer: Bug in "Get Photos and Videos from Files and Folders"

In PSE8 Organizer, I have a weird bug that occurs when I am using Get Photos and Videos from Files and Folders on certain folders on my hard drive. If the "Files of Type" filter is left as the default ("Media files (photos, audio, video)"), whenever I click on a file in the file browser, three or four files or folders seem to disappear from the folder. I can keep clicking on different items until every file and folder has apparently vanished from the folder. Looking in Windows Explorer, the files and folders are still there, and if I switch the "Files of Type" filter to "All Files", everything reappears and the behavior no longer occurs.
I'm not sure why only certain folders show this behavior. It may have something to do with the types of files or folders in the folder I'm looking at, but I'm not sure.
Has anyone else seen this happen?

Are you on Win 7? If the files in the Get Photos dialog disappear after you select them,confirm if the names of selected files/folders is shown under the File name . If yes, you can import these files by clicking Open. You should find the issue addressed in E9.

Problems with files with no types or creator infos

I installed Ffmegx which converts videos in differents formats.
In order to work, that software needs extra files (mencoder, mplayer, mpeg2enc).
After I downloaded them, the two first ones were seen as Unix Executable files
by Mac OSX, the third is seen as a text file, and therefore cannot be used by Ffmegx.
When I go see the type-creator infos for the 2 first ones, there is no infos for type and creator
and there are ????? signs elsewhere.
I am sure that I would get everything working if I only knew what to fill in (using type and creator
changer). Anynone knows what the extensions should be ?
P.S. This problem happens often with Mac files from internet, they loose their identity somehow on the way. Sometimes the file is downloaded as text (code) in the browser window itself ! Which I found out can be avoided by pressing ALT while clicking download. Very strange problem which happens both with Safari and FireFox. But pressing ALT doesn't help after all, because the file becomes a text file anyway, not associated with any program. Useless.

Start by doing the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, clear the LaunchServices database:
Rebuild LaunchServices Database
For Tiger users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press RETURN.
For Leopard users
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste in the following command in its entirety:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Press RETURN.
Now, OS X no longer uses type and creator codes to identify file types. It's all done from file extensions. OS X maintains a database of associations between documents and the applications that created them. The exception is an application which is identified by the ".app" file extension. Your system has apparently become corrupted in some way that has broken these associations, so the above is an effort to see if things can be straightened out.

I went through updates on my three newest Macs this week. As I stated I'm talking about iTunes 10.5.1 (42). I am checking for updates now and I see 10.5.2 is now available. I'll know in about 15 minutes if this issue is fixed or not.

I must have updated this PPC G5 a day or two before iTunes 10.5.2 came out. I was able to update to 10.5.2 (11) and this copy/paste bug is fixed. I'm happy again.

Can any one please let me know how to get MIME Type, but it should not be time consuming process.

Imac won't let me install Final cut studio 2..it will let me install the upgrade, but it has no live type and i need it to work on my current projects. How do I get Live type back installed in iMac

I just purchased an iMac for home and went to install final cut studio 2 and it gave me an error saying something about "PowerPC" not used or something like that. Installed the studio upgrade just fine...but it has no "Live Type" which I need to work on projects I have been using in my Mac Pro at my work place. How do I get "Live Type" to install in this iMac? Downloaded Live Type upgrade but that won't update cause there's no "Live Type" in the applications.

It sounds like you have Lion installed on your new imac, although your profile says SL 10.6.8 (you may want to change this.)
If you have the Snow Leopard install disc I believe you can install "Rosetta" from the extras folder which will then, if you have the original FCS2 discs , allow you to select and install Live Type and LIve Type content only from the custom install options.

Did you consider using one of the "workarounds" below to run an existing version of the AD Module for PowerShell under a specific PowerShell version:
a. #require -version 3.0 (in ps1 script)
b. powershell -version 3.0

When I type my text gets highlighted and then deleted.

I am having a problem with typing. When I type fast my text gets highlighted and then deleted or typed over. Im not sure what is wrong. I think it is either a trackpad or keyboard. Any help be great!!

The trackpad on the MB and MBP have a larger surface with more sensors than on previous laptops. As a result, when we type we have other fingers, thumbs etc. making contact with the trackpad and the trackpad receives input we don't intend. It happens to me quite often. So I hit Command + Z to undo and reposition the cursor. We need to train ourselves so that we keep our hands, palms, thumbs or other unnecessary body parts away from the trackpad while typing.

I also had issues opening AVCHD files on case-sensitive filesystems.
You can try these steps to solve the issue:
Right click on the AVCHD file and select 'Show Package Contents'
Right click on the BDMV file and select 'Show Package Contents'
Rename index.bdm to INDEX.BDM (it seems that all files in the BDMV folder should be in UPPERCASE for Quicktime to open the AVCHD file).
Go back twice and try again to double-click on the AVCHD file (Quicktime should open a window showing the multiple clips, as expected).
