where can I get a list of bugs fixed in ODP 10.2.0.2 ? We have sporadic problems in ODP 10.2.0.1 (Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE).

I have some problems with running application which uses ODP to connect to Oracle in version 9.2.0.6.
There is one PLSQL packages with maybe 30 procedures. Half of this have VARCHAR2 input parameters.
In that version of Oracle there is bug - I very ofen get "Numeric or value error" during calling PLSQL.
Only one suggestion from Oracle is to upgrade into higher version. My Admin told me that upgrade is planned

PiotrI doubt proposed change will reduce frequency of errors.
"Numeric or value error"In V9 this error cause 2 possible causes.
1) VARCHAR2 is too small
2) non-numeric value being assigned to numeric datatype.
If the root cause is #2 above, the error will continue with proposed change.

How to validate prerequisite for ODP and Oracle Client connection

I have a very simple application on .Net that connect to Oracle using ODP (was compiled with Oracle.DataAccess dll 10.2).
I want to check "connection prerequisite" (application will be able to connect to DB) before installing this aplication on other computers?
How can I check that ODP.NET version 10.2 or higher is installed on target host (registry check is not enopugh)?
I know that I can check ODP entries in registry - but this will not check Oracle Client and compatibility between client and ODP.
Also, if ODP was installed by ODAC XCopy installation - registry may be not updated by new ODP entry.
And - if I am installing on the computer, DB was installed on, Oracle Client can be not installed separately.
And one more issue: When I tried to run "test connection" method from installation, that use referenced dll on machine, that has only ODAC (with ODP) 11, - "Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleInit.Initialize()
at Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection..cctor()" error message was thrown (policies for both ODAC 10.2 and 11 are exists in GAC (assembly), pointing to Oracle.DataAccess 11 from ODP 2x bin).
So, How and which components can I check to ensure appropriate versions of ODP and Oracle Client were installed and application will be connected?

You could check for the presense of Oracle.DataAccess.dll in the GAC. Bear in mind you'd also want to check the version and whether a policy files exists as well as a newer version + policy file will work too (but not without the policy file).
That wouldn't confirm the install is valid and works though, and I don't know of a way you could easily check that, apart from perhaps simply trying to run a small exe that attempts a connection to the database.
With respect to the type initializer exception, that occurs when ODP cant find the right oraops*.dll or oci.dll, usually due to the wrong one being found, but can also occur if one is not found at all. Quite often this is due to the application including ODP in its bin directory rather than letting ODP get picked up out of the gac. Prior to 10.2.0.2.20, ODP loads the dependencies based in PATH so multiple homes can cause it as well. 10.2.0.2.20 and higher ODP loads dll's based on DLLPATH registry entry.

I lot of people are starting to embrace .NET as their development platform, but current limitations in ODP are going to push people away from using it with existing or new ORACLE databases. At least three major things need to be addressed:
- compatibility with older Oracle clients (at least 8i), also, deployment of ODP with older and newer clients should only require distributing the Oracle.DataAccess.dll to clients without running the Oracle Installer
- complete coverage for all Oracle data types (i.e. Object types), and all Oracle SQL conventions
- stability (bugs)
I really hope these will be addressed very soon. Otherwise I think you will see a lot of shops that are going to .NET, also making the switch to SQL Server (if they aren't there already).I'm actually most concerned with the client support because I believe any bugs and features will be resolved in time. I don't dispute that the 9iR2 client is better--my issue is that the 9iR2 client is not what is on most existing user's desktops--its 8i or 8 (or even 7.3.4). I know its not being widely used yet because it usually takes 12-18 months before a new client is widely supported by third party vendors (I would bet that even the latest version of Oracle's own Applications do not run on 9iR2 client!)
The net result is that users would have to have at least two oracle client's installed which has the following implications:
1) two client apps running two different oracle homes cannot be running at the same time
2) the user must manually switch between clients to run each app
These two reasons will make it extremely difficult to deploy Windows Forms (client/server) applications based on ODP. People will probably opt to use the MS driver instead to avoid the issue altogether.
For web environments, its not such an issue because your only dealing with the servers--but for Windows Forms applications, its a huge issue.
If I'm wrong about the technical issue of around multiple oracle homes, please let me know asap!!! -

Getting the data from the database is not a problem.
The dataset contains the correct information.
But updating the database is impossible.
I get errors like:
ORA-01861: literal does not match format string
And if I don't specify a DATE format in the TO_CHAR statement I get this error:
Concurrency violation: the UpdateCommand affected 0 records.
I think I've tried everything.
I've used the OracleGlobalization class, with the SetSessionInfo method.
I've tried all different types of date conversions to make sure that
the date format on the database is the same as in the dataset.
I've tried to change the NLS parameters on the DB server and in the registry on the client.
I've tried to change the DATECOLUMN type in the typed dataset from string to Oracle.DataAccess.Types.OracleDate
But it still doesn't work.
The default date format on the DB 9i server is AMERICAN,(DD-MON-RR).
A strange thing is that when I instead of using the ODP classes use
the System.Data.OracleClient and its OracleCommandBuilder
the code works perfectly without any errors.

My experience until this came up is that the ODP provider is better on everything
than the microsoft Oracle provider so I don't want to switch unless I have to.
Could someone that have used the ODP OracleCommandBuilder for updating a table including DATE columns with a typed dataset please give me some tips on how to make this work?

ErikDon't convert the dates to strings. Ever.
The command builder uses the metadata returned from the select command to build the insert/update commands. Using to_char in the query tells ODP that that is a varchar2 column. If you omit the to_char the commandBuilder will know to bind a date parameter in that spot.
Also in your typed dataset you should change the type from a string to a date.

I wanted to know if it is possible to use ODP 9.2.0.7 against a 10g (10.2.0.5) database. Up to this moment, one of our customers has an application with a 9.2.0.7 database that uses the 9.2.0.7 ODP. Some years ago, the development team tried to use newer ODP versions, but since the newer versions have different behaviour (I cannot explain what were those differences right now, the person who made the testing is not available and I cannot find any documentation about the issues) the decided to keep the 9.2.0.7 ODP. The only thing I can add is that the system was designed using .Net framework 1.1 many years ago, using the native Microsoft Oracle provider, and then they moved to ODP due to many ORA-00600 errors generated by the MS connector.
Nowadays, due to corporate decision, they are planing to upgrade to Oracle 10.2.0.5 (yes, I know that there is a 11g, but it's corporate decision :-( ) and the do not want to upgrade the ODP until they are able to test it throughly. Since the database upgrade to 10g is already planified, I wanted to know if ODP 9.2.0.7 can connect to a 10g database without problems.
According to ODP 9.2.0.7 readme file:

ODP 10.2.0.1.0 and ODP Beta on same machine
Here is what I need to do: I need to keep the 'production' version of ODP.NET (10.2.0.1.0) installed for my Visual Studio 2003, yet also install the beta ODP.NET for Visual Studio 2005. In other words, I have the Oracle 10g client 10.2.0.1.0 installed, and want VS 2003 to use ODP 10.2.0.1.0, and VS 2005 (on the same machine) to use the new ODP.NET beta.
Questions:
1. Is this possible? I believe it is, cause I think I have tried this before, but I remember I ran into some issues. Which leads to the next question...
2. What exactly is the 'install' sequence to do this? I.E. I already have ODP 10.2.0.1.0 on the machine, and now what to install JUST the ODP.NET beta (for VS 2005). If I remember correctly, what happened before was that it either (a) Installed the new beta of the ODP for VS 2003 (which is not what I want to happen) or (b) I didn't specify ODP for 2003 in the beta install and it removed it entirely.
3. And finally, is there any way to JUST install the ODP 2005 beta without anything else? And can that be automated?
Basically, I want to install the ODP Beta (possibly with the VS 2005 developer tools also) but NOT touch nor remove the ODP 10.2.0.1.0 production version so that VS 2003 keeps using it.
Any advice/instructions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes, as long as you don't try to use any ".NET Framework 2.0 stuff" in your application this works fine.
When I say "fiddle with stuff" I had to change my system path in order to avoid .dll mismatch type errors. So when I wanted to use the beta, I would change the system path so it was first, then I would change it so the production home was first if I wanted to use that version, etc. I also have non-public beta software installed, so my machine is not "typical".
I do remember running the production 10.2 with Visual Studio for awhile before the beta came out... now I do think you need the beta to use the Oracle Developer Tools for VS2005. Most of my development efforts are ASP.NET based (I'm really a DBA by day), and since there is not much support for ASP.NET in ODT, this was not a big consideration for me.

It looks like ODP is not included in Oracle patch 9.2.0.5. Does it mean ODP is a step-child? It is kind of painful to set it up for the customers...
Just the opposite. ODP.NET (as with all the Windows data access drivers) operate on a slightly separate release schedule to take into account changes with both new Microsoft and Oracle products. This actually means Oracle does extra work in order to better serve Windows users.
New features are not introduced in Oracle DB patchsets, but they are in major ODP.NET versions. As such, if someone has standardized on DB client patchset 9.2.0.2, but requires functionality in ODP.NET 9.2.0.4, it is possible to use the two in combination.
When you upgrade to 9.2.0.5, it is not necessary to make any changes to ODP.NET as any version of 9.2 ODP.NET can be used with 9.2.0.5. -

1. Connection pooling - which I guess can be done within the connection string
2. Prefetching rows
3. Data chunk size
My question is for setting 2 and 3, can anyone give any examples of the best way to implement tuning for Prefetch and Data chunk size. Also we are working with reading and writing large XML from the database - the performance is terrible, the bottleneck is the ODP. Can anyone give any advice on how we can improve performance for read and write xml operations, the xml data is held within a SYS.XMLTYPE field.

thanks for the response. I have a table which has a datatype of SYS.XMLTYPE which a web application will write to. For reasons to lengthy to explain I can't use array binding so I have a stored procedure that executes a single insert and that is called 400 times. The typical size of the xml data is between 100 to 500 kb. The database is hit hard because of the volume of users of the site. So I was interested to know which of the tuning options might return the best performance so I was really looking to see if there was an approach that one could follow to know which options to set and also what values to set them to (kind of best -guess options to start off with). Given this additional information would you be able to either share advice on what options you would first try and set or perhaps if you know of an online resource which outlines an approach could you point me towards that. I don't care which Oracle drivers the below functionality is in. But is it available? My guess was this was the best place to ask as both the SqlServer and MySql ADO.NET drivers provide this functionality:
1) How can I connect to an Oracle server without loading the Oracle client on the user's workstation.
2) How can I enumerate all Oracle databases on the network.
3) For a given Oracle database/server, how can I enumerate the schemas available on that server?
3b) And is there a third step where I enumerate machines, databases on that machine, schemas on that database?
Please, please, please tell me there is a way to do this as it lets us write our software so users do not need to know how to connect to Oracle. And that is a giant increase in usability.

Oracle client on the user's workstation.You can easily connect to SQL Server without installing SQL Server Client is because Microsoft is kind enough to include SQL Server client software in their Windows installation (which is MDAC), so you don't have to install it separately.
Unfortunately Oracle Client is not included in Windows installation, so you have to install it separetely. Fortunately Traditional Oracle Client is only needed when you want to use ODP.NET, you can deploy your application using Oracle Instant Client if you are using MS Oracle Provider.
3) For a given Oracle database/server, how can I enumerate
the schemas available on that server?connect as system, then run this query
select * from all_userswell, 2 & 3b, i don't know the answer, because when we want to connect to Oracle Server we usually have to configure tnsnames.ora.

Oracle ODP Support and ODP vs DEVART

I work with some vendor software that uses the ODP driver for it's .net application to talk to oracle. In there next release they are discontinuing ODP support claiming that oracle has chosen to no longer support this driver. The vendor is instead pushing us to use this [ devart|http://www.devart.com/dotconnect/oracle/] as a work around and they claim this should give us equal or better performance.
My questions are:
1. Is oracle really not supporting the ODP driver in the future (I couldn't find any indication of this on the web)
2. What is the trade of between using the ODP driver or the direct DEVart connection? I would appreciate if you could share your similar experiences with me.

With that said, ODP.NET has a number of performance/availability features that DevArt doesn't have: RAC connection pooling (i.e. load balancing, Fast Connection Failover), statement caching, self-tuning, and promotable transactions. DevArt has features that ODP.NET doesn't have as well.
Which provider one chooses often depends on how important each unique feature is to the customer. ODP.NET is by far the most popular Oracle .NET provider, not just due to its wide feature support, but due to a number of business reasons customers find important:
1) ODP.NET licenses and support costs are already included in the price of the Oracle DB. There is no extra charge.
2) There is one support organization to deal with. Thus, the logistics of resolving and coordinating complex service requests is easier.
3) Oracle is large multinational company. Oracle is going to be around a long time to continue to develop and support ODP.NET. DevArt is small privately-held company based in the Ukraine. Not much information is available about the company's financials. What happens if the company goes bankrupt or is sold and the new owners discontinue the Oracle provider?
4) ODP.NET is very popular. Thus, Oracle will support and improve it for a long time. It's not known how popular or financially viable DevArt's Oracle provider is for them.
5) If you need to work closely with Oracle, you can call, visit a branch office around the world, or even have Oracle come on-site. DevArt's support is email only. They do not list a single phone number or office address on their website.
6) As the most popular Oracle .NET provider available, ODP.NET is very stable, as it is being used a in wide variety of applications. -

Table schema not being updated after a SQL 'alter'
Hi all,
I have a problem to do with altering table columns and queries relating to that table thereafter.
I have a table which has been queried using an OracleDataAdapter.Fill(DataSet), if I add a column using say using an OracleCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() or sqlplus session (and doing a 'commit' after) the column does not show up on subsequant 'Fill' queries unless I reopen the DB connection.
Just as an example, here is my test table which is defined as:

with a few rows of data in...
If I query the table using ODP.NET (10 & 11)
OracleDataAdapter oraDap = new OracleDataAdapter("select * from steveTest",oraCon);
oraDap.Fill(ds);
Everything is fine until I add/remove a column with say sqlplus or via an OracleCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
e.g "alter table steveTest add address2 varchar2(30)"
Subsequent Fill or data reader queries only show the unchanged table schema, without the newly added column. If I remove a column the symptoms are worse and I receive a "ORA-01007: variable not in select list"
I can only think that ODP.NET is caching the schema for that table on that particular connection. Is there anyway to forcefully clear this out?
I have tried OracleConnection.PurgeStatementCache(); but this doesn't seem to help me.
My connection string is defined as:

The application I am writing is a middle tier application which handles various DB drivers and maintains several 'connection queues' which multiple lightweight client applications can use concurrently. As you can imagine, a possible scenario may arise where a table is queried, altered and then queried again which causes the above issue. The only way I can stop this from happening is if I close/open the DB connection but I don't want to do this after every alter statement.
I have tried this on Oracle Express 10g and Oracle 10g servers with ODP.NET clients (10.2.0.100/2.111.6.0). Just a point I thought worth mentioning, this does not happen in sqlplus.
Any help would be much appreciated.

1. check the data u are sending from the source system
2. check for the field before and ater change in the target system.
maybe the field is update with the same content. also check the status record of the idoc

Result: ORA-01008: Not all variables bound.You need 2 parameters bind calls for that (even though you use the same name :param, ODP.NET does care about the name by default, more later on that)
You should repeat the same call again to bind to the 2nd ':param'
OracleParameter Param = new OracleParameter("param",OracleDbType.NVarchar2,null,ParameterDirection.Input);
dbCommand.Parameters.Add(Param);
Remember ODP.NET is use bind by position by default (The first OracleParameters in the Collection binds to the first ":param", then the 2nd to ":param"). you can do named bind by setting OracleCommand.BindByName property.

Problems with Oracle 11g XE R2
Hi guys,
I've got a problem and try'n to solve it for abt a week now and tried many solutions.
My enviroment:
Windows 7 Professional SP 1 64-Bit
AMD Phenom II x4 940 @3.0 GH
4 GB RAM (In Usage while installing 40%)
Windows-Firewall is activated (but oracle.exe and lstnr.exe are configured as exception)
avast! Free Antivirus Version 2014.9.0.2018
Installation (both times with same outcome):
Installed O 11g XE 64-Bit in two different ways:
User I was logged in with is in Admingroup
Started installation via rightclick with administrationprivileges
I activated the administrators account and logged in with adminprivileges.
After that I've installed the 11g XE 64 bit
between both steps I cleaned everything up and restarted my system, registry was empty too and folder was deleted manually
at first I get this problem: Windows cannot find "http://127.0.0.1:%HTTPPORT%/apex/f?p=4950"
-> Manually changing %HTTPORT% to 8080
--> now I could doubleclick the shortcut, Firefox/IE/Chrome opens but 404 not Found-Error is returned
- OracleServiceXE, XracleXETNListener both are running

so Listenerservice is up and running but I cant find the http 8080-Service with netstat -a
so I started investigating a bit more:

I looked into the ORA_BASE-Folder and looked at the oradat folder, it contains a XE-Folder which is empty, the admin-folder contains: XE/ and adump, dpdump and pfile, all three are empty (what does this mean? No DB at all created?)

Problem was, the XE.bat-Script couldn't add me to the ORA_DBA-Group.
Reason: my Computername and my username, both had a vowel mutation "ü".
Reason it didn't work at my business-laptop too, both have my "Ü" in the username
