Building appication on 64 bit O.S..Performance issue

Hi all..
I have a web application developed using Struts and EJB. The underlying server is Jboss 4.0.2.
Earlier i was building and running my application on 32 bit JVM and 32 bit O.S (windows). But due to performance issues (heap space problems) we decided to shift to 64 bit platform as our application involves multithreading. So now we are using 64 bit JVM with 64 bit underlying O.S (windows server enterprise 2008). This time we observed great performance improvement with this.
Now my question is i am building my application on a different developer m/c which is 32 bit O.S + 32 bit JVM and i port those jar/war to the 64 bit scene above. In order to best utilize 64-bit capabilities further , am i need to build the application and run it on the same 64 bit m/c with 64 bit JVM ?
I am really confused with this.
Thanks in advance..

??? BE2012 definitely supports OES2. Both 32 and 64bit.

It was news to me that it's not supported with NSS on 64-bit:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...FUPQig&cad=rja
(sorry for the long URL)
On page 17:
5. Supported with Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) 2.0 SP1-SP3, with NSS, NDS, GroupWise and iFolder on 32-bit and 64-bit platforms for SUSE 10 only. (NOTE:
NSS only supported on 32-bit)
(however, they somehow decided to put the "5" footnote on the SLES part, not the OES part which only has footnote "1" next to it).

• 32 bit Agent causing performance issue on Win 64??

My OS is Windows 2003 64 bit server.
I am using Tomcat as my application server (version 6.0.20)
Java home is set to jdk1.6.0_14 (32bit). My agent is built on a 32bit platform. [I use the agent to gather specific data for profiling on specific commands].
Even if I simply enable the java_opts to load the agent, performance of my application slows down drastically. [Even if the agent does not do anything]. The same works fine when I run the agent on a 32bit machine.
Is this a known issue? Are there any work around for the same?
Any suggestions, help will be greatly appreciated.

• Performance Issues with Photoshop CS6 64-Bit

Hello -
Issue at hand: over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed significant issues with performance since the last update to PS CS6 via the Adobe Application Manager, ranging from unexpected shut downs to bringing my workstation to a crawl (literally, my cursor seems to crawl across my displays). I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing these issues, or if there is a solution I have not yet tried. Here is a list of actions that result in these performance issues - there are likely more that I have either not experienced due to my frustration, or have not documented as occuring multiple times:
Opening files - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Pasting from clipboard - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Saving files - takes 3-10 seconds to open the dialog, another 3-10 seconds to return to normal window (saving a compressed PNG)
Eyedropper tool - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempting to navigate any menu - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempts I've taken to resolve this matter, which have failed:
Uninstalled all fonts that I have added since the last update (this was a pain in the ***, thank you Windows explorer for being glitchy)
Uninstall application and reinstall application
Use 32-bit edition
Changing process priority to Above Normal
Confirm process affinity to all available CPU cores
Change configuration of Photoshop performance options
61% of memory is available to Photoshop to use (8969 MB)
History states: 20; Cache levels: 6; Cache tile size: 1024K
Scratch disks: active on production SSD, ~10GB space available
Dedicated graphics processor is selected (2x nVidia cards in SLI)
System Information:
Intel i7 2600K @ 3.40GHz
16GB DDR3, Dual Channel RAM
2x nVidia GeForce GTS 450 cards, 1GB each

This issue is costing me time I could be working every day, and I'm about ready to begin searching for alternatives and cancel my membership if I can't get this resolved.

• Performance issues with the Vouchers index build in SES

Hi All,
We are currently performing an upgrade for: PS FSCM 9.1 to PS FSCM 9.2.
As a part of the upgrade, Client wants Oracle SES to be deployed for some modules including, Purchasing, Payables (Vouchers)
We are facing severe performance issues with the Vouchers index build. (Volume of data = approx. 8.5 million rows of data)
The index creation process runs for over 5 days.
Can you please share any information or issues that you may have faced on your project and how they were addressed?

Check the following logs for errors:
1. The message log from the process scheduler
2. search_server1-diagnostic.log in /search_server1/logs directory
If the build is getting stuck while crawling then we typically have to increase the Java Heap size for the Weblogic instance for SES>

• Adobe Creative Suite Extension builder 2 not supported in Flash Builder 4.7 64 bit

Couldn't find anywhere to submit a bug report so hopefully this is a good place.
I was able to succesfully download and install the Adobe Creative Suite Extension builder 2 into Flash Builder 4.7 with not problems.
When I click File -> New -> Creative Suite Exention Project nothing happends. I recieve no error messages just the Project wizard panel that is expected to open doesn't open.
The extension works as expected when installed into the non-beta Flash Builder 4.6 32 bit verison.
I suspect there may be an incompatibility when switching to the 64 bit version of Flash Builder.

Hi everyone,
The problem is that Flash Builder 4.7 is not compatible with Extension Builder 2. Therefore we have provided Flash Builder 4.6 available for download, see links below.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you run into further problems.
Best regards,

• SQL Query with a little bit more complicated WHERE clause performance issue

Hello, I have some performance issue in this case:
Very simplified query:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM Items
WHERE
ConditionA OR
ConditionB OR
ConditionC OR ...
Simply I have to determine how many Items the user has access through some complicated conditions.
When there is a large number of records (100,000+) in the Items table and say ~10 complicated conditions concatenated in WHERE clause, I get the result about 2 seconds in my case. The problem is when very few conditions are met, f.e. when I get only
10 Items from 100,000.
How can I improve the performace in this "Get my items" case?
Additional information:
the query is generated by EF 6.1
MS SQL 2012 Express
Here is the main part of the real SQL Execution Plan:

• Installation of oracle ware house builder on linux 64 bit platform

Hi All,
Can anybody tell me the installation process of oracle ware house builder on linux 64 bit platform?
Thanks

Hi,
In the zip file there is a file called Readme.txt or Welcome.htm where you can find all of the steps you need to take to install the product.

• Performance Issue - 32 Bit Applications vs 64 Bit DB Server

Dear All,
My Current set up is as follows:
Operating System: Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 64 Bit
Database: Oracle 10.2.0.1 64 Bit
Client Connectivity: Oracle 10.2.0.1 32 Bit
Application: Lotus Domino 7.0.2 FP3 32 Bit
In the above set up,
When Application try to fetch the records from DB through client, it takes so much of time as compared to when i run the same with (OS & DB in 32 bit).
kindly let me know how to do workaround on this, analysation have to be made to overcome this performance issue.
thanks & regards
suresh

1. Check for available statistics.
2. Verify plans against 32 bit and 64 bit databases.
3. Analyze the sql trace for the session.

• Building a new Cube Vs Restricted Key figure in Query - Performance issue

Hi,
I have a requirement to create a OPEX restricted key figure in Query. The problem is that the key figure should be restricted to about 30 GL Accounts and almost 300 Cost centers.
I do not know if this might cause performance issue in the query. At the moment, I am thinking of creating a new OPEX cube and load only those 30 GL Accounts, 300 cost centers and Amount. and include OPEX in multiprovider in order to get OPEX
amount in the report.
whats the best solution - creating OPEX restricted key figure or OPEX cube ?
thanks,
Bhat

I think you should go for cube as all the restrcited key figure are calculated at OLAP runtime so it will definitely affect the query performance. There are a lot of costcenter for which you have to restrict it so definitely during the runtime of query it will take a lot of time to fetch tha data from infoprovider. Its better that you create a cube with the restrictions and include it in MP.It will definitely save a lot of time during query execution

• Annotation process tools build performance issue

Annotation process tools is taking 85 minutes to compile page flow files. Is there any suggestion to improve performance.

As you probably already have gathered, you have different execution plans in the two environments. There could be different reason why this happens, for instance different profiles of the data. But more likely it is due to that in the slow environment, the
plan was built from some atypical set of input parameters, which causes a performance issue when the procedure is run in a normal fashion.
When you say that the query has a lot of isnull and convert functions I get a little worried. If it is only in the SELECT list, it's not evil, but if functions are used in the WHERE or ON clauses, the query might benefit from a review, and possibly also
the data model. But this is pure speculation at this point.
I would suggest more than one course of action. As a short-term solution, you run UPDATE STATISTICS WITH FULLSCAN on all tables involved, as out-dated statistics can also be explanation for why you got a bad plan. New statistics should trigger a recompilation.
But even if this resolves the issue, it may not be feasible in the long run, because the events indicate that the query is sensitive to something and the bad plan could come back any day. For this reason, it might be a good idea to make sure that the query
does include inappropriate constructs, and you also need to review that there are good indexes in place.

When, or if, I remove AC Power from my PC for whatever reason I run into a problem in which after reconnecting the AC Power and attempting to turn on the computer it goes into a 3-5 second startup loop in which the PC does not post, but rather cycles power to all of the components indefinitely. I notice the LEDs on my optical drives cycling repeatedly ad infinitum until I power off using the 4-second hold method, and then press the power button again. At this point the PC boots up fine, and boots up fine going forward from all restarts and shut downs. How strange? I've never, EVER, encountered something like this before.
Problem #2: PERFORMANCE ISSUE
This PC has a handful of serious performace issues.
3dMark03 scored horribly.
Prime95 runs ridiculously slow although there are no erros! It runs much more quickly on my work PC which is a PIII 866mhz with 384MB of PC133 RAM.
I receive, on no regular frequency, or while doing anything in particular, Explorer memory errors. Not BSOD's mind you, but "...blah blah blah referenced memory address xxxxx-xxxxx and could not be written". This causes Explorer to restart itself, blowing away the start menu, task bar, and any Explorer windows open. They reappear, of course, without incident.
The most off performance issue of all is that when opening an Explorer window for either of my IDE HDs, designated D and E drives, I find that when using the highlighting rectangle tool the Explorer window freezes or lags. I can double-click and open or move/copy files without incident, but if I attempt to highlight by this method this halt or lag occurs.
Also, since my update of the BIOS from 1.2 to 1.7, and then to 1.8 system startup times prior to Windows loading are HORRID. I have disabled just about everything, and yet the SATA BIOS loads for 5 seconds, and then I must wait 20 seconds for Windows itself to come to the login screen. No other BIOS related issues to report per se, but this is terrible for what should be a blazingly fast computer.
Now let's see.. what have I tried to do to repair the issues?
1) 2 BIOS flashes. First from 1.2->1.7, and then from 1.7->1.8. Ostensibly this was just "because". The power user need to have the latest! I noticed the incorrect CPU temperature being reported, however.. This led to me buying this massive ThermalTake HSF to replace my stocker. I also added more thermal goop than I ever have before, as well as a PCI slot fan before I became aware that it was a BIOS issue! GRRRR MSI.
2) I thought perhaps for the one issue that one of the hard drives was an issue, and even perhaps for power, but I replaced each with new drives and tested all 4 on another PC. NO problems. Also I should perhaps mention that my IDE drives are all hooked up using Antec Cobra cables. Expensive yes, but why the hell not, right? I've never seen a hang-off grounding wire for IDE before. Decided not to use them as I could think of a great place to screw them in, nor have other PC using them had trouble skipping the ground wire.
3) I unplugged every molex cable, the 4-pin CPU power, and the 20-pin ATX power and rerranged them all - as well as removed and then reinserted the RAM.
4) I tried changing my memory timings and power management settings, etc in BIOS. Nothing seem to impact the issue. I didn't fiddle with the voltages, but I should not need to running the RAM at SPD or lower settings and without overclocking the system at all!
5) Another issue that I had that seems to have vanished, come back, vanished, and then come back a "little bit" is my USB ports. When set to enable legacy devices in BIOS my USB items like my Logitech wireless keyboard would just cycle power and refuse to function. Also my UPS connected VIA USB seems to sometimes handshake with Windows and sometimes not. I've tried using all of the different ports, etc but the problem remains. I NEED 6 ports for my devices so it is all that I could do!
6) I have an Enermax 550w EG651P-VE(FMA) with 36 amps on each voltage rail on it's way, and it should arrive tomorrow. Despite all of the crap regarding power supplies that I see on this board I am not confident that it's the problem. That Antec PSU should be able to hold it's on with 20 amps on the +12v channel. C'mon now. I build a nearly identical system with the same power supply for a customer and he has no problems at all. He also has 3 HDs, same motherboard, etc.. the only difference is he has but one optical drive and a 2800+ rather than a 3200+. That power difference should be decimal nature in amps needed.
...oh and the sound card is in PCI slot 3, for those that remember the glory days of sound card IRQ issues that Creative was once notorious for... oh, and I disable the ethernet boot device, etc so my slow startups should not be related. My serial ATA drive is also on connection 1 of the VIA controller.. Promise can kiss my a**.
Soooo.. Show me what a n00b I am, oh great ones. I've built over 100 PCs since 1998 for myself, friends, families, and customers... and I've never seen an issue like this one! I'm no dummy, but please don't assume too much. Other pros on here know full well you can forget the most simple mundane detail in spite of experience! I want to solve this problem. I am on the verge of shelling out for a new motherboard and processor of the 939 pin variety.. and am now wary of MSI's long awaited socket 939 K8 Neo2 board despite it's awesome reviews. MSI has never really given me trouble before.. but I don't really want to spend money to the order of $200+ for that damned Gigabyte board. Gigabyte has always been good to me as well. Save my wallet! PLEASE!!!
Thanks so much everyone, I tried very hard not to leave out any details!

You can reach me on Yahoo or AIM just about any time, and I will check here frequently.
The startup problem might just be a screwy psu. Your antec *should* be able to power your stuff just fine, but maybe it is defective in some strange way.
What is your 3dmark03 score? If it is 3000-4000, (approx perf. level of ati 9600xt), then it is fine.
Check your memory using memtest86+, and try underclocking it to ddr333.
UNplug usb devices, and see if it speeds up boot. Also, I would not recommend bios 1.8 since people seem to have some troubles with it.
Also, try disabling agp fast writes, disabling spread spectrum, and maybe boosting ram voltage a tiny bit.
Try booting without your audigy plugged in, and try booting barebones (nothing but 1 hard drive with os) and see what happens.
I'm no expert, but you might get lucky trying these steps.

• OLAP_TABLE performance issues

Please advice. OLAP_TABLE performance is slow and SELECT did not return data after running for > 10 hours.
ISSUES:
(1) I started with only one measure and one dimension in the OLAP_TABLE statement and it returned data. However, when I added the remaining measures and dimensions, the statement never return data. The end user required all 20 measures and all 7 dimensions. How can I overcome the performance issue and get the data from the cube? Please HELP!
(2) The cube is compressed. I read articles saying that OLAP_TABLE cannot use the LOOP keyword when cube is being compressed. I have already using MODEL keyword and the statement did not come back. How can I improve the performance and return data?
(3) Can I create MV using OLAP_TABLE in 10g? If not, is there anyway to get around without MV because the VIEW is killing the performance so badly (it simply did not return and has to be killed manually).
(4) I also used “AWM plug-in” to create the relational table view. However, all 20 measures and 7 dimensions must be included. It exceeded 4000 characters in single PL/SQL function parameter and caused the limitmap error. So the “AWM plug-in” did not work for me.
Appreciate all of our help!

• Performance issues in latest PPAPI Flash Player releases?

Hi there,
I've recently noticed some pretty serious performance issues in the latest versions of the PPAPI Flash Player in Chrome.
I'm using:
Windows 7 64-bit
Chrome Version 41.0.2272.101 m (64-bit)
Flash Player PPAPI Version: 17.0.0.134
I've noticed a large drop in performance recently when updating Chrome, I have been using Away3D 4.1 (using Stage3D) to create a series of Generative Art experiments, if you check out the one below I find that in Internet Explorer and Firefox (using the NPAPI version of the Flash Player) the FPS performance on my system is around 35-40 fps for me, but in Chrome's PPAPI player it drops drastically to around 6 or 7 fps.
I just recently updated my Chrome version so this is a recent change... around a few weeks ago this content was working fine in Chrome, around the same 35-40 fps I am getting in other browsers.
http://waroo.com/genart9s
Is anyone else out there seeing these performance issues with recent releases of Chrome's PPAPI Flash Player?

• Sun JVM Performance Issue in Sun Solaris 10 (SPARC)

Hi,
Issue : Performance issue after the migration of a Java application from IBM-AIX 5 to Sun Solaris 10 (SPARC)
I am facing performance issue after the migration of a Java application from IBM-AIX 5.3 to Sun Solaris 10 (SPARC).
Normally the application takes less than 1 hour to complete the process in AIX, but after migration in Solaris the application is taking 4+ hours.
The Java version of IBM AIX is ,
java version "1.5.0"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build pap32dev-20051104)
IBM J9 VM (build 2.3, J2RE 1.5.0 IBM J9 2.3 AIX ppc-32 j9vmap3223-20051103 (JIT enabled)
The Java version of Solaris 10 is,
Java(TM) Platform, Standard Edition for Business (build 1.5.0_17-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_17-b04, mixed mode)
Description of Application
The application merges 2 XML files of size 300 MB each using DOM Parser and generates flat file according to certain business logic. No remote files are using for the file generation. There are two folders and around 200 XML file in each folders of similar names. The application loads 2 similar XML file at a time from each folder and Processes. Same way, the application processes all the 200 XML file pairs using loop.
The JVM Parameters are given below.
/usr/java5/bin/java -cp $CLASSPATH -Xms3072m -Xmx3072M com.db.mcc.creditderiv.GCDXMLTransProc
Here the extended swap memory in AIX is 3072 (3GB). After copying the same tode to Solaris, the
application started throwing java.lang.OutofMemoryError. So that we have increased the swap memory up to 12 GB.
Since 32bit Java allows maximum 4 GB extended memory we started using 64 Bit Java in Solaris using -d64 argument.
The Current JVM Parameter in Solaris is given below.
java -d64 -cp $CLASSPATH -Xms8192m -Xmx12288m com.db.mcc.creditderiv.GCDXMLTransProc ( 64 GB Swap Memory is available in the System)
We have tried the following options
1. Extended heap size up to 12 GB using -xms and -xmx parameters and tried multiple -XX options. Earlier the application was working fine in AIX with 3.5 GB extended heap size. ( 64 GB Swap Memory is available in the System)
2. Downloaded and installed the Solaris SPARC Patches from the website,
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
4. Downloaded and installed XML and XSLT patch from sun website
5. Tried to run the Java in server mode using -server option.

A 64 bit VM is not necessarily faster than a 32 bit one. I remember at least on suggestion that it could be slower.
Make sure you use the -server option.
As a guess IBM isn't necessarily a slouch when it comes to Java. It might simply be that their VM was faster. Could have used a different dom library as well.
Could be an environment problem of course.
Profiling the application and the machine as well might provide information.

• CPU Performance Issue

We are facing a performance issue related to cube refresh. Even a small cube consumes around 70% of the CPU while refreshing.
Details of the cube: This cube has 10 dimensions and 46 straight forward measures (mix of sum and avg as aggregation algorithm). No compression. Cube is partitioned (48 partitions). Main source of the data is a materialized view which is partitioned in the same way as the cube.
Data Volume: 1200 records in the source to be processed daily (almost evenly distributed across the partition)
Cube is refreshed using: DBMS_CUBE.BUILD(<<cube_name>>,'SS',true,5,false,true,false);
Environment - Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 (on AIX 6.1 64 bit), AWM - awm11.2.0.2.0A
Hardware Configuration
4.2 GHz, 3.5 CPU Core 32 GB RAM
Has anyone faced similar kind of issue? Is there any server level / database level parameter that needs tweaking to control this behaviour?

Here is another trick to combine sum and average measures in the same cube. It relies on the AGGCOUNT function in OLAP DML, which you can look up in the reference guide.
Suppose that you have a cube with two measures, A and B, and that you want to aggregate A using SUM and aggregate B using AVG.
Step 1: Make the cube be compressed and aggregate all measures (A and B) using SUM.
If you do this using AWM, then the solve specification should include a MAINTAIN COUNT clause. To double check, look at the user_cubes view for your cube (TEST in my example).
select consistent_solve_spec from user_cubes where cube_name = 'TEST';
CONSISTENT_SOLVE_SPEC
SOLVE
SUM
MAINTAIN COUNT
ALLOW OVERFLOW
ALLOW DIVISION BY ZERO
IGNORE NULLS OVER ALL
)You can hand edit the XML for the cube if this hasn't happened. Here is what you want to see in the XML for the cube.
<ConsistentSolve>
<![CDATA[SOLVE
SUM
MAINTAIN COUNT
OVER ALL
)]]>Don't worry about the slight difference in syntax -- this is due to different printing routines in the client Java and the server c code.
Step 2: Verify that the cube's VARIABLE has the WITH AGGCOUNT option.
My cube is named TEST, so the variable is named TEST_STORED, and my cube is dimensioned by TIME and PRODUCT. You can run this in the OLAP Worksheet.
dsc test_stored
DEFINE TEST_STORED VARIABLE LOCKDFN NUMBER WITH NULLTRACKING WITH AGGCOUNT CHANGETRACKING <TEST_PRT_TEMPLATE <TEST_MEASURE_DIM TIME PRODUCT>>
Step 3: Define a new Calculated Measure, B_AVG, in the cube to get the average for measure B.
Select "OLAP DML Expression" as the "Calculation Type" and enter the following expression. Obviously you need to adjust for the cube and measure names. I am putting new lines into this for readability.
QUAL(
NVL2(AGGCOUNT(TEST_STORED), TEST_STORED / AGGCOUNT(TEST_STORED), TEST_STORED),
TEST_MEASURE_DIM 'B')
Step 4: Specify the $LOOP_VAR on the new measure
Execute the following in the OLAP Worksheet. (Again, correct for measure and cube names.) It instructs the server to loop the cube sparsely. If you don't do this, you will get dense looping and poor query performance. You only need to do this once (per calculated measure). If you save the AW to XML after this, then the LOOP_VAR value will be saved in the XML itself.
call set_property('$LOOP_VAR' 'TEST' 'B_AVG' 'TEST_STORED')For reporting purposes you should look at measures A and B_AVG.
