C++ mac compiler

Just started a beginning C++ class. the instructor is assuming use of windows and visual studio. (which i know hardly anything about)
however I'd like to learn how to do this on my mac as well as that is where i want to be in the long run even though i'm stuck in windows for the class.
so is there a good free C++ compiler for mac??? i'm using a powerbook g4 and 10.3.9
any recommendations??
  Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Kevin--
interesting that xcode can't be dragged to the trash
to delete it. In the spirit of learning, is there
anything you can tell me briefly as to why that is
the case
When you install the developer tools, there are a bunch of support files that get installed as well. And they're kind of splattered in different places around the computer. Some go in the /Developer hierarchy. Others go in /System/Library/Framworks. And there are still others. So that's why you need an uninstall script.
and under what circumstance (besides needing
drive space) someone would want to delete it.
I suppose it's possible that you might need to revert to a previous version if you had a really complex project that wouldn't build because of some changes in an update. Or maybe there's a bug in a framework in one version of the tools, but not another. But probably the most common reason is just to get the disk space back.

  • Game runs very slow in Mac Compiler

    Hi
    I have an issue with the compiler.
    When I run in debug or play mode the game is incredibly slow and choppy.
    However if I compile the game and run it in a browser it works just fine. It also works just fine if I use a windows machine in debug or play mode.
    Do you have any idea why its slow in the Mac flash builder compiler but no where else (and of course how I can speed it up on my Mac)?
    Im using 4.7 and starling.

  • Convert windows Apps to Mac

    I use boot camp to run windows on my MBP but it is slightly inconvenient and more importantly I do not like the OS. I will not go into details as it would take a while. I am aware of parallels but as I said I do not like the OS itself. In addition I like to play games some times and that is not supported in parallels (or at least most are not). I have attempted crossover but it does not run some of my high graphics games. I know that large gaming companies are able to convert windows games to OS X format without completely re-writing the game. I am wondering if this is possible for me to do as well (without spending tons of $). If there is another option like crossover I will go for that as well (as long as it is more compatible with most programs). However, an all out converter is the best thing.
    thanks,
    macguy3000
    p.s. I know that this is easy when converting basic c or c++ programs via a mac compiler. I figure that a game could be re-compiled as well just with a much more complex compiler.

    Whatever the options are, they're not likely to be something you can do yourself.
    In order to recompile an application you're going to need the source code. For obvious reasons, most game companies are very protective of their source code and are not going to release it to you just so you can build your own copy. Even if they did (and assuming they're not some open-source gaming company), they'd likely a) charge a lot for it and b) place significant restrictions on what you can do with the code (e.g. non-disclosure agreements, non-compete/distribution agreements, etc.)
    Add to that the fact that high-end games are typically tuned to specific graphics libraries such as DirectX which do not exist on the Mac, so you'd have to rewrite a lot of the graphics code in order to get it to work. That's what the commercial tools such as Cider offer - mostly-autonomous translation of the Windows-specific code into something that will work on the Mac.
    Without the source code, the expertise, the tools, and the time, there isn't going to be anything you can do other than run the program in some kind of emulator or virtual machine (Crossover, Parallels, Fusion, etc.).
    What you describe isn't a trivial tasks - if it were you'd see far more games being released in Mac-based formats that didn't need the VM engines to operate.

  • 4/16/2014 - Release - Flash Player 13

    In today's release we are updating the Macintosh Flash Player plug-in for Safari and Firefox.  This resolves an issue that was causing Flash Player to crash on a subset of Apple systems built between 2006 and 2008.  This bug was Macintosh specific, and no other platforms were impacted..
    New Features for Flash Player 13:
    Enhanced Supplementary Character Support for TextField
    Characters from the Basic Multilingual Plane (BMP) with Unicode code points between U+10000 and U+10FFFF now work correctly in TextField controls.  This change greatly enlarges the code point range we support, and now includes characters like emoticons and complex CCJK characters.
    New Stage3D Texture Wrapping Modes
    Developers can currently set the wrapping mode of a texture to either clamp or repeat.  Using the repeat option will repeat the texture on both the U and V axis.  However, in some use cases, you may only want to repeat the texture on either the u or v axis.
    This is now possible with the introduction of two new parameters:  REPEAT_U_CLAMP_V and CLAMP_U_REPEAT_V
    Stage3D Anti-Aliasing for Texture Rendering
    Anti-Aliasing is a useful for improving perceived image quality.  Hardware based Multisampling Anti-Aliasing (MSAA) is now available on all desktop platforms.  To enable MSAA, set the level from 0 to 4 using the antiAlias property of the Context3D.setRenderToTexture() method.
    0 = 1 subsample, no antialiasing
    1 = 2 subsamples, minimum quality antialiasing
    2 = 4 subsamples, medium quality antialiasing
    3 = 8 subsamples, high quality antialiasing
    4 = 16 subsamples, maximum quality antialiasing
    Relocated Full Screen Video Warning to Top of Screen
    We've made a small tweak to the "Press Esc to exit full screen mode" warning that is displayed for full screen video.  We've received feedback from developers and users that the dialog obscures content.  We wanted to make a change that both satisfies security concerns and customer viewing enjoyment.  To reduce the impact of the dialog on the on-screen content, we've moved the dialog to the top of the screen.

    Hello,
    I have confirmed that a non-US locale (in this case Germany) is still getting 13.0.0.241 instead of 13.0.0.244.  I've escalated this to have the issue fixed and find out why non-US locale is still getting the old files and not the new files.  I'll post here when I have an update.

  • Main function in c programming

    I searched the net regarding my question.  I continue to play with C off and on over the years, but now I aim to really work my way through the K&R book.
    In the book one sees:
    main()
    hello world stuff stuff
    This used to be no issue at all. It would compile and make a.out with no warning, nor complaint. Now I am working through the K&R book because I want to. I also have the first edition of Mark's Learn C on the Mac, but given how old it, and the second edition is, with regard to Xcode, I'll just stay with the terminal, BBEdit and K&R. By the way, I also saw numerous 1 star ratings on the Learn C book on amazon. Perhaps folks here could tell me how they feel about that book if they have used it and in particular the negative.
    Now I get this warning, and I wonder why main has to have a type; what changed? Some new standard, the mac compiler. Now although I get the warning, default to int and all that, the compiler still creates a.out and it runs fine with the old ./a.out line command.
    kr1.c:3:1: warning: type specifier missing, defaults to 'int' [-Wimplicit-int]
    main()
    ^~~~
    1 warning generated.

    Why not just use a properly defined main function? This avoids having the compiler guess about about the intended return type and the number and types of the inputs. The C99 version of Standard C permits the two versions below:
    int main(void) {...}
    int main(int argc, char *arg[]) {...}
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entry_point#C_and_C.2B.2B for more details, and OS specific main variants.
    The last (2:nd) edition of K&R (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_C_Programming_Language) was released in 1988 preceding standard (ANSI) C and its C89, C95, C99 and C11 variants (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANSI_C) so K&R is at the very least somewhat out of date with modern C.

  • Upgrading to Java 1.4.1 on OS X

    On http://www.apple.com/java/ they state:
    The Java 1.4.1 Update 1, now available from software update, improves stability, memory usage, and correctness. Requires
    Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later.
    Following the link one is directed to:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/softwareupdates.html
    Apparently one should be able to upgrade the Java version by doing a standard Mac 'Software Updates'. I have installed the Mac "compilation" upgrade (100Mb) but Java didn't follow that. After a restart and running the tool again, I still do not see Java in the list of available updates (and there are no 'compilation packs' where Java might be).
    Anyone know how to upgrade the Java version on a Mac? I can't believe how difficult this turned out to be.

    Here is a helpful link for more info...
    http://developer.apple.com/java/faq/#gen_1
    -- Begin Copy
    Q: What version of Java is included on Mac OS X?
    A: Mac OS X v10.3, "Panther", is now shipping with an updated Java 1.4.1. A Java 1.4.1 Update 1 for Mac OS X v10.2.6 ("Jaguar") is currently being updated for compatibility with other software updates, and will be made available again shortly. Both releases are based on the J2SE 1.4.1_01 JDK with the HotSpot Client VM, and contain a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements since the initial Java 1.4.1 release.
    Q: Does Mac OS X support multiple J2SE versions on a single OS installation?
    A: The Panther and Jaguar releases of Mac OS X include both 1.3.1 and 1.4.1 J2SE implementations. Earlier releases of Jaguar did not ship with Java 1.4.1, but can obtain 1.4.1 through Software Update. With 1.4.1 installed, the standard command-line commands such as java and javac use 1.4.1. Apple developer tools such as Jar Bundler and Xcode both allow you to specify a Java version for double-clickable apps to use. Please see the Java 1.4.1 Info.plist Dictionary Keys documentation for details on how this is done.
    -- End Copy
    I was able to download the update via Software Updates. But the response "currently being updated" means that it may have been pulled off the update list temporarily.
    On the other hand, if it does not appear in the list of available updates when you run Software Update, you may already have it.
    Launch a terminal and enter "java -version". What is the output?

    You posted this question last week and I recall posting a plausible answer which I'll expand on here.
    Javac shows this behaviour when the shell script file doesn't have the correct end of line characters. This can happen when the file is generated on one platform and transferred across to Mac OS X. Since the script file is fairly short, it would be easy to retype it into TextEdit and then save a new version.
    Be sure to change the file permissions by using chmod in Terminal:
    chmod 777 filename

  • How to run a class file in MAC os, compiled in XP.

    Hi all,
    i am compiling a java program in windows using JDK 1.5 and i am copying this file to MAC os (Panther). In Mac i am running this class file using JDK 1.4.i am getting the following exception,
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassversion error.
    This is understandable, but is there any solution for this ...
    Any one experienced the same problem ...
    If any one comes up with a solution to solve this, plz let me know...
    Thanks in advance......

    You are compiling it in 1.5 and expecting 1.4 to run it?
    You have two options: compile it at the 1.4 level or upgrade your Mac to 1.5

    I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
    My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
    The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
    Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.

    How to solve this?

    Hi,
    that means that a compiler does not know where to search a header file "jni.h". You may help a compiler by exporting a system variable:
    export CPLUS_INCLUDE_PATH=/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Headers/or wherever your jni.h is.
    You can put this into ~/.profile so that the variable is saved for other sessions.
