Ca't Restore iMac

I have a 17' iMac Intel which has been having lot's of keychain and system problems since I tried to install Adobe CS3. I have now decided that it is time to do a clean install. When I boot up from the original Restore DVD, the mouse button does not function. I attempt to run erase in Disk Utility and nothing happens. I attempt to quit Disk Utility and run an Install, and nothing happens. I think that my selections are not working because of the mouse button, although return and space bar do register. When I restart with my old system, the mouse funtions properly.
Thanks for any help,
Ken

[sorry, stuck in the past, I use an old Apple mouse] It should function the same as it did when you first took it out of the box. Perhaps you should plug it into a USB port on your iMac to get through the install. If you have other connections, disconnect those while re-installing and only have the keyboard and mouse connected.

  • Time Machine no longer continuing to back up restored iMac

I just put a new hard drive in an iMac 1.83Ghz CD (early 2006), and then restored a 10.5.1 TM backup to the new drive. Then I restored some other files from an earlier TM backup date that seem to have been corrupted - possibly due to the failing drive. At this point I was able to look back through all of the previous TM backups.
My problem: when TM tried to backup the restored drive for the first time it couldn't "see" the old TM backups and thus tried to create a new TM backup from scratch. How can I get TM to continue backing up from where it left off? Thanks.

I would guess from what you say that if you go into your Time Machine disk now in Finder you will see a single backupd directory but with only backups(s) from Feb 29 on.
If so, what has happened is that after you restored your system Time Machine was unable to make sense of the changes from your previous back up. Possibly as a result of the corruption you thought your hard drive had created (or possibly because you didn't restore from the latest backup you had?). When it came to do the next back up it was unable to do an incremental and backed up the whole system again. I would guess that your backup drive didn't have enough room for that without deleting all earlier backups, which it then proceeded to do.
If all this is right, I don't think you can do anything about the lost earlier backups. The good news is that if Time Machine now seems to be working OK you are probably past the problems.

  • Restore iMac MA589B/A to original settings

I want to restore the iMac to its original software. I have misplaced the discs that came with the computer.

If you have 10.6 or earlier, unfortunately, you will need to obtain some disks. You can buy Snow Leopard for around $30 - give Apple a call or try third-party retailers.

  • Restore iMac to "out of the box"

I have replaced my iMac desktop. New one is up and running.
I would now like to restore my old one to "out of the box" condition to give to my aunt.
I tried Command R on start up and after the system was reinstalled, have found that my information is still on there.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you

    Follow these instructions:
What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
    In addition to the above:
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
    Then:
Start your Mac with its original System Installation DVD (if your Mac shipped with one) or OS X Recovery (if it didn’t).
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take. The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu. Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD and install the bundled apps.
Applicable to selling outside your family or others close to you: Don't forget to include any DVDs that came with your iMac, your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possesion, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • Can I use Time Machine to restore iMac & recover A2 app & images as they we

I have the "continuous processing" problem. I've tried most things. Disaster.
Does anyone foresee any problem with rebooting from installation disc and using Time Machine to restore to the day before I upgraded to A3?
What I'm hoping is that I shall then have my original A2 app. and its corresponding library of images.
Advice appreciated BEFORE I try this. It seems intuitively a safe bet, but...

It really depends on what you told TM to exclude from the backup. If you included everything then yes.
If not you may have to manually remove A3 and reinstall A2. Also, you may lose other work you've done during that time like email, documents and stuff.
You can selectively restore from TM and just get your library back. I did a selective restore when the logic board died in my iMac, but all my pictures were on external drives and unaffected by the loss.
I'd make a separate back up of important files before doing any of this.

  • Restored iMac from an MBP Backup giving problems with external devices

Recently, I restored from an MBP Leopard OS Time machine Backup into a new iMac 27".
Restoring process ran smoothly and took like an hour to recover my files and applications from the external disk time machine backup and after that the new iMac had everything my old MBP used to have but the OS. So far so good.
But now I'm having problems connecting external devices, like the very same external disk to set my time machine backup or a Cannon Printer.
The iMac can recognize and attach the external HDD (iOmega 1TB), I've succesfully formated it several times, but as soon as the backup process starts it will idle after backing 200MB or so and the HDD will be abruptly disconnected.
Regarding the MP610 Cannon printer/scanner I used it smoothly once from this iMac, but after that it's been impossible to scan or print again, and it keeps saying it is connected to an MBP instead of an iMac!
I already read the other related topics but my case is slightly different than those, so I will appreciate anyhelp you could provide me.

When you say you restored, what does that mean? Did you do a full restore, installing the system from the backup onto the iMac? If so, you've probably borked the system and will have to reinstall it. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2186
Also, if you restored applications, it's possible some of those applications are not installed correctly or are not compatible with SL. Printing problems are common among folks who have not updated printer drivers to SL-compatible versions.

  • Restoring iMac to factory settings

    Hello everyone!!!
I have bought a new MacBook and as such have sold my iMac 2011.
To do restore it I did this:
From start I hit CMD and R and it took my to the disk utility screen
    I selected the Macintosh HD
    Then Erase Tab
    Then Mac OS  (journaled)
Then I erased it (this only took a few seconds?)
Then I selected Quit disk utility
Then I selected Reinstall Mac OS X
    Continue
As I am doing on Wifi it said it would take about 3h 50m so I have left it and gone out.
My questions is, can we be 100% certain when I get home and shut it down (if it isn't already) that it will have wiped everything? I don't want this guy getting it home and all my files etc being on there.
After reading stuff it sounds like it should all be wiped but I just want to be sure. Any way of checking without setting it up again?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
You can choose Erase free space. It is one of the options within the Erase panel.
Selecting the minimum setting, 'write all zeros once' is sufficient.
That will take about two hours to erase free space on an approx., 200 GB HD. This timing is not based on wi-fi just directly on the disk internally, so for you it may be longer.
You don't have to reinstall again, to use Erase free space.

  • Restore iMac Time Machine Backup to Mac Mini

I've struggled to find a discussion that covers what I'm trying to do. I have a Time Machine backup from a G5 iMac that was stolen, not exactly certain which model. A friend of mine has lent me a Mac Mini to use but unfortunately when he tried to wipe his data from it, he didn't do a great job and wiped the machine entirely. It needs a FULL fresh install as it won't boot on it's own, however it won't allow me to restore from the iMac's Time Machine backup as it states it was 'created on a different machine'. The Mac Mini is the MB138LL/A model. I obviously don't have the original machine's installer disks to use so am a bit stumped. Thanks in advance for any help!

Order replacement discs from Apple customer service, if applicable, or buy a retail disc if the original OS was upgraded. Install, then import the data from Time Machine in Setup Assistant.

  • Restored iMac from Time Machine backup - now it wants a password!

Hi - hope you can help!
I restored my iMac from a Time Machine backup after a hard drive password. My system (user account) was not password protected - if ever asked for a password, all I needed to do was press Enter. The Time Capsule itself was password protected, but only in so much as the admin access and the wi-fi.
After restoring overnight, I'm now presented with a login screen and two user accounts to choose from (my wife and mine) but it requires a password. Pressing enter doesn't work, nor do any of the Time Capsule passwords.
Previously the iMac was set up to auto login to my account and didn't need a password then.
Any ideas why this might suddenly require a password? Is it a standard system generated password I should know?
    Thanks for any help.
I'm running the latest version of OS X.
    Jon

Didn't have enough coffee yet. Of course, what I told you won't work, since you can't log in. This might work. You must boot into to Single User mode, Cmd-s at the Startup chime.
At the root# prompt enter the following commands.  Press RETURN after each:
    fsck -fy
    mount -uw /
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
    dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
Replace "username" with  one of the user names and "password" with the desired password.
    Reboot

  • Reset/restore iMac for kids' use

I am giving my 2007 iMac to the kids and want to wipe out all of my docs, photos, music so it is free for their own stuff (homework, photos, etc).
I'm running Lion and it seems that if I reset to factory settings I will have to reinstall with the discs that came with the machine which was Leopard (or maybe Snow, don't remember).
If I do that, how do I get Lion back?
Do I even need to go to that level of wiping out since it is staying here (ie., not selling it to someone else)?
If not, how do I just get rid of my data but keep Lion and all the apps?
    Thanks.

Following the directions for OS X Restore, you should be able to erase the internal HDD, reinstall Lion and then configure the iMac for your kids.

James, in case you are having a problem, these are the steps:
    1. Restart the computer holding the Command and R keys
    2. In the OS X Utilities window, select Disk Utility and click continue
    3. From the sidebar, select your internal disk drive
    4. Click the Erase tab near the top of the Disk Utility window
    5. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journales) from the pop-up menu
    6. Change the name of the disk drive if you want to
    7. Click the Erase button near the bottom right of the Disk Utility window
    8. In the confirmation dialog that appears, click Erase
    9. From the menu bar, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility
    10. In the OS X Utilities winddow, select Reinstall OS X and click Continue
    11. In the Install OS X window, click Continue
    12. Read and licenss agreement and click Agree
    13. In the confirmation dialog that appears, click Agree
    14. Select your computer's disk drive form the list of available volumes, click Install
The installer will recreate an OS X Recovery HD, and then restart to the newly created OS X Recovery HD, and then continue with the remainder of the isntall process.  This second part may take a while so be patient.  When it completes, the iMac will restart again into the installed copy of Mac OS X as a new machine.  You will be greeted by the full Setup Assistant.

  • How do I restore iMac 2006 to factory settings?

I have an iMac from 2006 that is currently running it's latest update, which is 10.6.8. I need to restore it to factory settings, as I am selling it. When the new user turns it on I want it to be just like it is a new Mac.
    Thanks!

Click here and follow the instructions. When you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.
