Calculate amount of nodes in XMLTYPE column
I am in ORACLE 10g 10.2.0.4.0
There is a table BOOK(
BOOKID NUMBER(10,0),
XML_COLUMN XMLTYPE)
XML_COLUMN looks like

How to rename element (node) names in an XMLType column?
I have a source table with a xml data stored in an XMLType column.
The xml contains elements/nodes identified by numbers. I need to replace the numbers with the appropriate names.
The plsql below does this, but has two issues:
i. It selects the data into a clob and does a text replace on the elements in a loop. This works, but is super slow for 3500+ xml rows (about 500 node pairs per row).
ii. Once the data has had the element numbers replaced with the names, it inserts the new xml (clob wrapped in xmltype function) into the table with the XMLType attribute.
The problem with the latter action is that it is failing due to nls client vs server settings, or so it appears from what I could dig up. The actual error message:
ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing
LPX-00242: invalid use of ampersand ('&') character (use &)
Error at line 3
There are come entities in the original xml like "" (the degree symbol).
My question is two-fold:
a). Can I replace the element names without straying from the xmltype datatype? If so, how?
b). If I cannot do "a.)", then what must I do ensure that the clob gets converted correctly to xmltype and inserted into the table?

Take a look at html entity codes: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_entities.asp.
You can use this:
insert into t values (xmltype('<test>'||dbms_xmlgen.convert('this is a test &')||'deg;</test>'));
or
insert into t values (xmltype('<test>'||dbms_xmlgen.convert('this is a test &')||'#176;</test>'));
see this: ° (& deg;) or this: ° (& #176;)
SQL*Plus will not display degree character. But this is valid enitity code, and when you generate HTML out of this, it should be displayed properly in web browser.
HTML is in fact XML, that is validated by specific DTD (Document Type Definition).

Schema evolution success! But new node is empty in XMLTYPE column?
Hi everyone!
Quick question. I am working through the XML Schema evolution process and was able to use inplaceevolve successfully. I can see the new node added to my schema under user_xml_schemas. However, when I try to upload an XML document with that new node, it shows up in the stored XML as empty?
Here are some more details...
I added the assistant nickname element

/Elements that occur at most once in each document can be indexed using extractValue(). Despite the fact that the index appears to be a functional index, when we create the index we automatically re-write the create index into a normal btree index on the column that contains the value for the element identified by the xpath.
Eg in the case of a functional index based on extractValue, defined on XMLType using Object relational storage, with an xpath that identifies a node that occurs at most once in each document is not a functional index, it's re-written into a plain old vanilla btree index. You can actually check this by looking in the system tables

XMLType column based on XML Schema: several questions

I've a table on an oracle db version 10.1.0.4 where I stage the xml files containing orders created on a third party's system using BizTalk.
Although the storage I opted for is based on an XML Schema, defined by this third-party, I am facing big perfomance issues with files bigger than a few hundreds of kBs.
For instance, a 32Mb file takes more than 2 hours to be processed.
Now, after reading other threads in this forum and the documentation, my understanding of the problem is that the whole issue is with the correct indexing of the nested tables.

Note that I cancelled this operation before it was over so I imagine that these figures refer to the statistics as of the time when the operation was interrupted.
So, here are finally my questions.
In order to create the constraints on the nested tables as shown in other threads, do I need to drop the existing xml_orders table and ancillary object types and recreate them or is there a way to add such constraints using the existing system generated object names?
Secondly, the xml_orders table may contain severale documents, not just one and his current primary key is the column ID. So, in order to uniquely identify the deepest element in the xml document, I need first to select the relevant document by means of the id column.
Would it be better to create the indexes containing this id column together with the nested_table_id and array_index?

PS: I wrote a 10 lines xsl transformation that I passed on to Saxon together with the 32Mb file. It took less than 1 minute to produce a flat file that was loaded almost instantly by SQL*Loader. So, what I am looking for is a procedure loading this stuff in less than 2 minutes or possibly less.Does the following help

CFM /TR - how system calculate amount based on rate FX 60A
Hi all,
i need to know how system calculates amount based on rate entered upon creating a contract (t-code TX01).
steps input:-
1. header - comp code, product type, trans type
2. partner
3. purchase curr & amount (eg. IDR 8,345,545,500)
4. sale currency only (amount system will auto calculate) USD
5. rate field = 11.553
6. spot rate will auto pick up from rate
7. value date
8. contract date
upon TBB1 no error. posting log as follows:-
FX1000+ : 40 8,345,545,500 IDR bank GL acc
50 8,345,545,500 IDR clearing acc
FX2000- : 40 722370.42 USD clearing acc
50 722370.42 USD bank GL acc
but upon TPM18 error occurred as follows:
DBT_C009 - GL not maintain in acc symbol 5.3.4
DBT_E039 - no posting spec assigned to update type
DBT_B018 : 40 0 USD, 431,977,511 IDR gain/loss
50 0 USD, 431,977,511 IDR clearing acc
so, after maintained DBT_C009 as follows still error for DBT_E039:

Permission issues accross schemas to load XMLTYPE column - structured storage
Hi,
We have a table in BIUSER schema this table is object-realtionally stored with XMLs. When we are trying to load receords from ETLUSER schema we are getting the error as
Record 1: Rejected - Error on table "BIUSER"."PWAYWORKFILE_TABLE".
ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
Heres the oracle installation details

All the records are moving to the bad file, whereas the same load happens normally in its own schema i.e. BIUSER
Suspecting this as permission issues we have already given the permission to the table sysnonym as given below in the registration script.
We googled and found few things about ACLs that we are not sure of , its that is the issue please let us know if this table can be created and loaded from different schema

I have finally acquired a sample schema and xmls to reproduce the errors that i am getting even after acquiring XDBADMIN privilege and registering my schema as GLOBAL.
Here's the problem i am facing, whenever i intend to store the PublisherList (publisher.xsd) out of line while registration i am running into insufficient privilege issues even if i have the schema registered using (LOCAL => FALSE), whereas it runs smooth in BIUSER and if i dont set it out of line it works in ETLUSER as well.

at test.main(test.java:259)It's hard for me to tell you more without seeing your instance data, but for problem #1, if you look at the underlying SQL types being generated by your schema, you will see that the default SQL mapping for a "string" in your schema is a VARCHAR2(4000) (and I believe this would be only 2000 for a varying width character set like UTF8).
You can specify that you wish this column to be mapped as a CLOB in your schema if this is the problem. Also note that there is a 64K limit on the size of an individual node in XMLType. -

However, our requirement is different in the following ways:
1. We hope to be able to add/drop as many XMLTYPE columns to a table as we
want( all structured storage, but with different schemas).
2. When a XMLTYPE Schema needs to be updated, we will add a new
xmltype column, assign it the new schema and migrate the data from the old column. After that we want to drop the old xmltype column and it's schema to reclaim all the storage.
The underlying xml tables are drop, space reclaimed.
However, we found out that the segment/blocks/bytes of the xmltype column itself is not released.
Question:
1. Since Xmltype column associated with xmltype schema is structured
stored, the xmldoc should parsed and stored in underlying tables. However, it seems that the xmltype column itself is acquiring sunstantial amount of space.
By querying user_segments table, we saw the underlying structure is actually taking constant and small space, however, the main table is taking huge space.(We populated the table with 61K rows), For instance,

In your case since you are not using the default table, the data is stored witin the table itself as oracle has not shred the data. -
OracleDataReader allocation using extractvalue() on XMLType column
I am accessing an element within an XMLType column in a select statement using the extractvalue SQL function.

I noticed that the RowSize for the command used to execute the select is unusually large (~24K). I have narrowed the space allocation issue down to the extractvalue() column, which is about 8k per instance of extractvalue() in the select statement. Since the fetch size if 64K, I am seeing a lot of calls to opsDacRead (DB round trips?) in the ODP.NET log, probably due to the fact that only 3 rows are being returned in each call to opsDacRead.
My question is: How does ODP.NET determine the amount of space allocated within the reader's buffer for such a column? The element I am trying to extract is defined in the xml schema as 'xs:string' and is never more than 40 characters or so.Mark,

Yes, I tried increasing FetchSize. Unfortunately, under heavy load, I experienced long execution/wait times within the first and last calls to opsDacRead() while walking the reader. I suspect that was due to allocation and clean-up.
However, I did find out why the buffer size was so large. If the xml schema does not contain length restrictions on string/text elements via the maxLength option, Oracle defines the underlying field in the data type created for the schema as VARCHAR2(4000).
I'm pretty sure that adding a maxLength restriction to the string element in the xml schema will reduce the size of the data type's field and in turn reduce the size of the Reader's buffer, but I haven't had a chance to test it.

i've recently implementing a project which need to stored hierarchical data. since relational db alone can only offer flatfile and implementing hierarchical data using realtional table with design structure such as
1. MPTT(Modified Preorder Tree Traversal)
2. Adjacency List
3. Recursion
has a lot of drawback ESPECIALLY on searching/traversing to find parent nodes. so i decided to try using oracle xmldb since xml is by nature hierarchical. so i came out with a design by using relational table + xmltype column. what i did is for eg. a customer table

the xmltype is stored as schema enabled not Clob. the schema is defined where the customer node will have unlimited nesting with each other.
where the xmltype column is to stored the position/path of this customers within xml tree.
eg. This customer id is 3 and the path is stored as below

<customer id="3"/>
</customer>
</customer>
</root>
the path will have a root node element and nested all the way until this customers. so in short i will be able to select this customer using Xpath, by traversing up by grabbing all the parents, getting all the child of this customer and getting the sibling as well.
the operation on this row record will involved with updating or querying(mostly) the xmltree inside this column.
so, my question is, based on this design:
1. is this design relevent? compared to just used MPTT(Modified Preorder Tree Traversal), Adjacency List & Recursion?
2. which isolation level should i use if there's an event that this customer's path will be updated/or the parent nodes need to be updated?
i'm not very sure about this design yet, so any recommendations or advise on this?

wesleyYou will need to create a custom BC4J domain object as a java type for XMLType and then implement the necessary fetch and update semantics. There is no built in support in BC4J framework for this type at this time.

ORA-00600 occurs on an extract from a large xmlType column
When running the extract() function where search criteria has been specified (for an existing node), I receive the following error:
ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [qmxdMatchingChildren:overflow-1],[], [], [], [], [], [], []
However, if I remove the search criteria, the fragment returns no error.
Both queries have been working successfully on smaller documents.
Example with criteria:

Problems sorting larger sets of XMLType columns/tables

Here's something I tried to wrap my head around:
I'm using Oracle 11g r1 for Windows Server 2003.
I've imported a fairly large set of XML files into a temporary XMLType table. Now
I want to sort the contents of the table and put them into another table which
uses a sequence to get primary keys (would be a longer story to explain, basically
sorting by this non-XML primary key is super-fast as opposed to everything else
I've tried, plus I need something unique):
INSERT INTO realtable SELECT 0, object_value
FROM tmptable ORDER BY extractValue(object_value, '/some/*/field');It works fine for a very small number of rows but when I tried with about 30000 rows,
still not too much, two kinds of things can happen. Either, Oracle gobbles up a huge amount
of memory (>1,5GB) until the statement breaks:

I can create a workaround from outside Oracle I think, so it's not serious however I'd would
be interesting to know what happened or if there is a better way to do this.
Thanks!Unfortunately, the problems are not reproducible in a meaningful way. All I can say is that once a statement will result in a kqludp2, it will always fail with the exactly same error message until I reinstall the database from scratch. On the other
side, when I found a configuration that works, I could delete and rebuild/refill a table multiple times without the thing ever breaking.
As the most recent example, after the latest trouble I deleted the database and changed my DDL scripts to the last configuration I wanted to try and broke the last time (several tables with two normal columns and an XMLType column each), everything worked like a breeze.
I can file a TAR when I get a support ID from my employer, however I installed the database on a virtual machine (I should have mentioned that earlier) and Oracle doesn't officially support that configuration from what I know so I'll doubt they'll do anything about it. I've procured a physical computer now and try to reproduce any of the problems when I get to it. -
Synchronization failure on XMLType column
Hi!,
We're using Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.1.0.5.0 - 64bit Production on Solaris
After creating a table with one schema-based XMLType column, we created a context index on it with the ctxsys.path_section_group as its sole parameter. We populated the table continuously and at 30 minute intervals, though DBMS_JOB, synchronized the text index with CTX_DDL.SYNC_INDEX.
Indexing worked normally in the beginning up to about 11000 records in the base table. After which time, further synchronization failed repeatedly with trace files indicating an error with drsxsopen. Manually sync'ing the index from SQL scratchpad produced the same error. A typical trace file is shown at the bottom.
We also varied the memory parameter to SYNC_INDEX from 2 to 10 to 32 to 512 megabytes with the same results. Index optimization apparently works without error. Furthermore, the sum of pending records and indexed records are equal to the total number of records in the base table. No record has a NULL in the XMLType field.
The XMLType column is stored object-relationally although no schema validation is performed on insertion through triggers. We are running a validation procedure over the entire table but this will take at least a day to complete.
The question is: is this behaviour related to XML validation or are there other issues or bugs that come into play with respect to context index synchronization?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I did not find the exact cause of the failure, but after creating a new table and creating a BEFORE INSERT trigger with schema validation on the XML column, the problem did not reappear.
The following should be helpful in finding which row(s) cause problems:
