Calculate.override bugs; LC ES 2; Acrobat 9.4/Reader 9.4

Hi All
I have encountered possible bugs in calculate.override.
It seems that I cannot turn it off and allow the user to type freely, and then turn it on again.
The situation simplifed:
1) There are 3 text boxes, A, B and C.
2) A and B are normal text boxes, free to type.
3) C is set as 'Calculated - Read Only', the calculation is A.rawValue + B.rawValue
Now I want to allow the user to type anything they want into C (by pressing a button), so I have to disable the calculation (and the read only attribute, set this to open).
I also want to restore the calculation if I wish  (by pressing a button).
I discovered several issues here:
==========
Disable Calc
==========
1) C.calculate.override = "disabled"; // disable calc
    Having only this line does nothing, the calculation still occurs, nothing has changed.
    Note that C is still read only and the user cannot type into the box, but for now I am just pointing out that the calculation should have stopped.
2) C.calculate.override = "disabled"; // disable calc
  C.access = "open"; // allow user to type
    This seems to work somewhat, however the calculation is STILL performed UNTIL the user actually types something into C.
    So I tried adding this line to change the value of C, thereby preventing having the user to type into C:
    C.rawValue = 0;
    This doesn't work, the rawValue of C does not change, the calculation is STILL performed UNTIL the user actually types something into C.
3) Tried messing around with the code to no avail:
    C.access = "open"; // allow user to type
  C.rawValue = 0;
  C.calculate.override = "disabled"; // disable calc
* It seems that C.calculate.override only does something when  C.access is used. *
==========
Enable Calc
==========
4) C.calculate.override = "error"; // restore calc
     Does nothing.
5)  C.access = "readOnly"; // user cannot type
  C.calculate.override = "error"; // restore calc
     Again does nothing.
6) C.calculate.override = "error"; // restore calc
   C.access = "readOnly"; // user cannot type
     Nothing again.
I have tried just about everything, mixing up code, trying "warning" instead of error and so on.
* I can't seem to restore calculation after disabling it *
Am I missing something here?
I can't seem to attach files, I could mail the PDF so you guys can mess around with it.

Many thanks

I did the same as you.
// Open the field to allow user entries
NumericField1.access = "open";
// Allow override, means you will not get an error message when the calculated value is changed
NumericField1.calculate.override = "disabled";
NumericField1.value.float.value = "0";
Restore original state of the field.
NumericField1.access = "readOnly"
NumericField1.calculate.override = "error"
NumericField1.rawValue = null
NumericField1.execCalculate()
But you're right, the restore does not work.
I tested execEvent("calculate") and execCalculate() with no avail.
Very odd!

    We have a 10 person office - all either use Acrobat XI or Reader XI.  One person is on Windows 7.  The rest are on Windows 8 (not 8.1).  I say this because I thought it was a Windows 8 issue, but having the same problems on the Windows 7 machine. We are all having problems opening pdf's sent to us from other firms. This has increased in frequency over the past two months. We've checked with the various firms, and their other clients are not having problems. Some pdfs open but with a lot of missing content and strange formatting, others won't open at all.  There are different error messaged depending upon the doc.  Some are regarding the fonts, for example "can't extract the embedded font...."  Others are "insufficient data" errors.  There are more, but for purposes of keeping this short, I won't include them.  Another unrelated issue is that we are having trouble printing excel files to pdf.  The files end up with bad formatting.  I've worked with adobe "chat" support, our IT consultants with no resolution.  I also haven't found any similar "known issue" online  Would very much appreciate any assistance.  Thank you

    The font embedding can be a problem if not done and you are trying to view the PDF and do not have the font on your machine. Acrobat will often try to find a replacement, but it is not always a good choice. Sometimes the "Use Local Fonts" button can be changed in state to resolve some of the viewing issues.
    If you are trying to copy or export info, then it is important that you have the fonts on your system. Otherwise, the message you are getting about embedded fonts would not be showing up.
    As for Excel formatting, be sure that the Adobe PDF printer is selected in the printer screen before you look for the paging and formatting of the file. In most OFFICE programs, if you change the printer the application will reflow the document to best match the printer (called "using printer metrics"). So check before you create the PDF that the layout is correct.

  • Acrobat 5.0 & Reader 9.0 Problems reading web PDFs

    Greetings,
    I'm running Acrobat 5.0 and Reader 9.0.
    When I click on a web link to a PDF I receive this error message:
    i The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please Exit and try again.
    In Windows my files types of .pdf and .pdfx are both set to open with Reader 9.0.
    I run a similar configuration on another computer (Acrobat 5.0/Reader 9.0) and do not experience any issues opening web .pdf documents.
    Thank you for any help!
    Michael

    Adobe proior to version 9 discouraged multiple Acrobat/Reader product/versions on the same client. Version 9 says it is OK but you still need to set each applications preferences correct to stop the sibling bickering. Too many posts about this.

  • Acrobat Pro and Reader fighting for Safari frameworks folder...

    We manage hundreds of Macs of which most are at 10.4.8.
    We have both Acrobat Pro and Reader 7.0.8 installed on all Macs.
    Sometime within the last few weeks something has changed on our systems (eg: upgrading from something under 10.4.8 to 10.4.8) that is causing Acrobat Pro and Reader to fight for the Safari.app/Contents/Frameworks/ folder. This folder contains aliases to either Pro or Reader frameworks within that Acrobat app's own frameworks folder (...Acrobat Pro.app/Contents/Frameworks/)
    This issue is that the end user is prompted to authenticate for either Reader or Pro to "repair itself" which it is just changing the aliases within the Safari Frameworks folder to point to their own frameworks.
    If I set Preview as the default pdf viewer and then delete Acrobat Reader so that only Preview and Acrobat Pro are on the client, then it seems to work beautifully without authentication request. We would like to keep Reader on the systems though. We use Sassafras' Keyserver with a limited number of licenses for Acrobat Pro.
    Has anyone else experienced this? Found a solution, etc?
    Thanks!

    I agree with rikbarry - I finally reinstalled Acrobat, then ran the
    update to 9.4.5. The updater took nearly an hour to finish which can't
    be normal, but the software appears to be the correct version now.
    I work for a very small graphic design company and use an older emac
    that has pretty much reached its shelf life for many apps and OS.
    Could my aging computer be contributing to the problem?
    Because we depend heavily on pdf workflow, I chose to reinstall
    WITHOUT running the uninstaller first, as the 9.4.4 version was at
    least still functioning. I was somewhat surprised that it worked, and
    I am NOT looking forward to the next updater.

  • Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 - Can't open PDF on web

    Hi,
    On my work machine, I have Acrobat 6 installed so I can create PDFs (I hope to get authorized for Acrobat 8 soon). When trying to view/open a PDF on a website, I was getting the following message:
    "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required."
    And the PDF won't open.
    I downloaded Reader 9, and updated both Acrobat 6 and Reader 9 with all updates.
    In Preferences, I have played with enabeling/disabeling the "Display PDF in browser" on both Arobat and Reader with no luck.
    Are there any other settings I need to change to be able to open PDFs?
    Many thanks!

    I'm having a similar problem and am totally frustrated.
    I have an old version of acrobat reader 5, but today I downloaded reader 9, but when I click on .pdf files online, I get the same message saying that I need reader 8 or 9 to open files on the web.... which I have!
    I went in, after reading this thread, and made sure my 5 had the "display PDF in browser" UNCHECKED, and that it WAS checked in 9... but still no dice. For a few years now I've been unable to just click on and open pdf files online, and have been going a long route around by right clicking pdf's, clicking on "save target as", saving the files to my desktop, then opening reader 5 and going to file, open, and opening the file. What a huge pain in the butt though... all I want to do is be able to click pdf files and open them in my browser!!
    Oh, and another bizarre thing that has happened is that since installing reader 9, all the icons on every pdf file on my computer has changed to the icon windows uses for files of an unknown type. Can't figure out why since when I double click any of these files, they open right up in reader 9.
    I'm beyond irritated with trying to figure this out, so I'm open to any suggestions anyone has!

  • Appending new pages to signed documents now makes Acrobat 9 and Reader 9 mark signature as invalid

    Hello!
    I have developed a service that appends additional pages to existing PDF documents. Some of the documents the service works on happen to be signed. As the service appends the pages using incremental updates, the signed contents are left untouched. This makes Acrobat 8 and Reader 8 display the signature state as "valid with subsequent changes" which is ok and no one complains about.
    Now along come Acrobat 9 and Reader 9, and all of a sudden the signature state is "invalid" which my users do complain about. Telling them that inspecting the signature state details they can see that the signed content still is untouched and the actual change is recognized to be some appended pages, doesn't help either as they in turn forward the documents to their customers who don't accept the documents if the Adobe Reader sais the signatures are invalid.
    Does anyone know a way new pages can be added to a signed document without having the new Adobe program versions choke on them?
    Even a hint that involves adding some flag to the original unsigned document or the signature itself would help as the users in question can tweak those processes. Due to the nature of the workflow, though, signing unfortunately must happen before my service can add the new pages.
    Best regards, Mikel.
    By the way, the signatures in question are regular approval signatures, nothing fancy, especially not certifying signatures (which indeed can forbid any changes or at least any changes but some form fill-ins and annotations)...

    Hi Fritz,
    In the interest of full disclosure, I got the answer to the problem from one of my distinguished colleagues, I'm just the messenger in this case.
    The problem is that the form adds some items to the Arzneispezialität / Zusatztext combobox which are there during signing but the form doesn’t remember that it did this on the next form open.
    Since this field is included in the MDP+ signature and the field has changed in the re-opened version vs. the signed version, the MDP+ signature becomes invalid.
    XFA has a feature that remembers these kinds of things for you but it is turned it OFF. Please open the attached screen shot to see the control in question.
    So, you can either (1) turn this feature ON (Automatically), or (2) write some script to clear the combobox items prior to signing or (3) write some script to repopulate the combobox items on the subsequent open to match the items that were there during signing.

  • Texts in pdf form don't appear when viewing in Acrobat nor in Reader.

    Texts in pdf form don't appear when viewing in Acrobat nor in Reader nor when printed after the form has been filled. But the texts appear when one clicks inside the field. What is the solution to be able to print and view all of the texts in all of the fields that have been typed.

    More than likely caused by someone filling out the form with Mac Preview.
    Here's a potential fix: http://kb2.adobe.com/community/publishing/885/cpsid_88564.html

  • In your tutorial, having a problem linking the "Search the LabVIEW bookshelf" (on my D drive) help function with my Acrobat 4.0 reader(on my C drive)

    When I was using the temp system demo vi, I selected Help>>Search the LabVIEW bookshelf. I then had a pop up window display tell me that the manual file "D:\National Instruments\LabVIEW 6.1\manuals\lvlib.pdf" could not be opened. I then did a search for this file and found that the pdf file is where it should be. I also checked to see that my Acrobat 4.0 reader files were in tact and they are. I was able to open up this file in Acrobat 4.0 but only by double clicking the name of the pdf file while it is highlighted in my find files function box (It also works if I go directly to the pdf file itself in its folder location a
    nd double clicked on it). Nevertheless, for some reason when a vi is opened and when using the Help function in order to use "Search the LabVIEW bookshelf", it does not link to my Acrobat reader. Are my LabVIEW configuration settings wrong? I just recently had LabVIEW 6.1 installed. What do I need to do in order for LabVIEW to properly link up to my AcroRD32.exe file?

    In your LabVIEW 6.1\help directory, please replace the lvmanual.vi with the attached VI and try to select Help>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf again.
    If it still does not work, please post a reply.

  • Acrobat X and Reader X coexistence

    Hi,
    From reading the forum posts, it appears Acrobat X and Reader X installations can co-exist in Windows. However, it has yet to appear on the matrix doc:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333223.html
    What particular reasons would one need to keep Reader X installed, when users are licensed for Acrobat X ? Thank you.

    Yes they can happily coexist. Until recently it was useful as only Reader had Protected Mode, but now Acrobat has it too, the primary reason to coinstall is to test your end user's views of forms, etc.

  • Flattening annotations (comments) changes highlight color in Acrobat, but not Reader

    I have a pdf document with multiple comments consisting of sentences highlighted with different colors. The colors are the default, bright colors in the default commenting "Highlighter Tool Properties" palette. When I flatten with either Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 or X (Tools - Print Production - Preflight - flatten annotations and form fields) the colors of the highlights change from the normal 'bright' colors to dull 'pantone'-like colors. Interestingly, if I view the flattened file with Reader, the colors are fine (back to the bright colors), but when viewing with Acrobat Pro they are the dull pantone colors. It is as if there is a 'flag' in the file telling Acrobat (but not Reader) to change the displayed highlight colors.
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.5
    Does anyone know how I might change this so that the highlight colors do not change when flattening?
    Thanks

    Well, I was able to answer my own question. You have to go into "Flattener Preview" and change "Color Space" from the default "none" to something else, in my case, "Device RGB". Also, make sure to set page range.

  • Spawning a template works in Acrobat, not in Reader

    Hi - I have created a form that has a template.  Originally I wanted to have a new page spawned when the enter key was pressed in one of the text fields at the bottom of the page.  But I wasn't having any luck getting that to work, so I ended up adding a button that spawns a page.  It works in Adobe Acrobat, however when I open the form in Adobe Reader, the button does not add a new page when it is clicked.
    Before I tried out the form in Reader, I saved a copy of the PDF file from Acrobat using the File / Save As Other / Reader Extended PDF / Enable More Tools.
    I am using Acrobat XI and Reader XI.  My operating system is Windows XP.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    It will work in Reader 11 if you don't Reader-enable the document with Acrobat, or if you Reader-enable the document with LiveCycle Reader Extensions and include the spawn template usage right.

  • Trouble opening acrobate files with reader 10.1.7.

    I have trouble opening acrobate files with reader 10.1.7. When I click  on the file to open it with adobe reader x, nothing happens. If I click  on Adobe Reader X icon, a message comes up: preparing to install. After  that, I can open a PDF, but only until the next reboot.

    Something went amiss during the install. Windows keeps trying to finish the incomplete install every time Reader opens.
    Use the Adobe Cleaner to completely remove Reader.
    Download the offline installer and reinstall without a download manager

  • How to print off Web to Acrobat and not Reader?

    Hello,
    I have Adobe Acrobat Standard X (10.1.8) and Adobe Reader 9.5.5 installed on my PC (Vista Home Premium x64).
    When I go to print a page off the Web to PDF, the resulting document currently gets displayed in Reader rather than Acrobat. I would prefer that the new document show up in Acrobat instead, so that I can delete any unnecessary pages (article comments, ads, etc.).
    Is there any way to make it so that when a new PDF is created from the Web, the result shows up in Acrobat and not Reader? And if so, then how?
    In case it makes a difference in how you answer-- I would like to keep Reader as the default when opening an existing PDF to read it.
    Thank you.
    Message was edited by: jamadr: more information

    There is really no good reason to have both Reader and Acrobat installed on the same system since Acrobat does everything Reader does and much more.
    For what it's worth, Dov, over here in Mac-land, I find it really really useful to have both Reader and Professional installed. I find the casual reading experience in Reader to be much more convenient, and I'm much less likely to inadvertantly alter a file I only wish to read. By default the toolbars consume less screen real estate, which I find useful. Also for workflow reasons, I can have 20 PDFs open in Reader and 1 or 2 open in Professional, and can more easily keep them straight.  I am also under the impression that Reader is less resource-intensive in terms of memory footprint.
    Oh, and, of course, I find it useful to use Reader 10 because of unresolved bizarre performance problems with Reader 11 (reported to Adobe and that got some stillborn developer attention), while still using Pro 11 for editing and other pro-type tasks.
    (On the gripping hand, when I want to do something like OCR a page I am reading in Reader so I can copy-paste it elsewhere, it is annoying to have to then open it in Pro.)
    This is basically the opposite of your advice .
    I'm under the impression this is more viable on the Mac than Windows though? Or perhaps it is a disaster waiting to happen.
