Calligraphic brush options

Only "fixed" and "random" options work. All the others are grayed out. Any idea why?

It works now! Thank you so much, Shrastogi!
Could you please help me with one more thing? Does the variable width profile work with calligraphic brushes? I have been trying to change the width and I do not see any variation in terms of how the brush looks like. Any idea how to use the variable width with calligraphic brushes?
Thanks again!

  • Other Dynamics brush option in CS 5

    Hey, I have CS3 on one computer and CS 5 on another. On CS3 my dynamic brush options have a section called 'Other Dynamics' that allows me to change jitter opacity, but my CS5 does not have that option in the same area.
    Does CS5 not have 'Other Dynamics' for brushes or is it just somewhere else?
    Thanks

    Adobe is following in Microsoft's foot steps they seem to want to drive their users crazy or up the wall  by changing names and locations of things. They don't worry too much about braking actions that might use a menu Item they rename or remove. Try Transfer brush option.

  • Can't see my Brush Options in PSE4 (WIN)

    Just bought and installed PSE4. I am trying to play around with the brushes, but I can't see where to change the brush options. I was told it was beside the tablet options (in the upper right hand corner), but that is so far to the right there is nothing after it.
    Can anyone help me? Pretty please!

  • Non-round (square) calligraphic brush?

    Hi,
    Is there any way of creating a rectangular caligraphic brush in Illustrator?
    Most calligraphic pens I know have square-tipped nibs, not round.
    Thanks,
    Ariel
    PS Using Illy CS5 on Windows 7 64-bit. Have a CC subscription so could
    download CS7 if that's the answer.

    Ariel,
    You are far from losing it.
    I believe I have the full and improved solution now, (specific angles and widths for the size and direction you have given):
    1 normal Stroke Weight equalling the smallest nib width (2pt),
    1 Calligraphic Brush set at the direction angle+arctan(smaller/greater width) (60°+ arctan(2/5) = 60°+21.8° = 81.8°), and with 0%roundness, and with √(smaller width^2+greater width^2) = √(2^2+5^2) = √29^2 = 5.385pt diameter,
    1 Calligraphic Brush set at the direction angle+arctan(smaller/greater width) (60°- arctan(2/5) = 60°-21.8° = 38.2°), and with 0%roundness, and with √(smaller width^2+greater width^2) = √(2^2+5^2) = √29^2 = 5.385pt diameter,
    With these, for closed paths without corner Anchor Points (Smart Guides are your friends, and checking with the Direct Selection Tool may be convenient/necessary):
    1) Create the normal Stroke path (2pt Stroke Weight) with Round Cap/Join;
    2) Add New Stroke and set the Stroke weight to 1pt, then Add new Stroke again;
    3) Apply the two Calligraphic brushes to the two strokes.
    See the first paths in the image below.
    And with these, for open paths/paths with corner Anchor Pojnts, a bit more work (and a change from stroked to filled paths):
    1) Create the normal Stroke path (2pt Stroke Weight);
    2) Copy in front and change the Stroke Weight to 1pt, then create a new copy;
    3) Apply the two Calligraphic brushes to the two copy paths;
    Now you have the shape of the path with a point from one of the Calligraphic Brushes sticking out at the ends and forming a funny shape to be filled out, see the first set of open paths below:
    4) Lock the original normal Stroke path (2pt path);
    5) Select the two copy paths and Object>Expand Appearance;
    6) Pathfinder>Divide, then Pathfinder>Merge;
    7) At each end/corner, straighten out the concave parts by applying the Convert Anchor Point Tool to the outermost convex corner Anchor Point (if applicable/needed) and the Delete Anchor Point Tool to the concave corner Anchor Points on either side and use the Direct selection Tool to drag in the relevant Handles of the remaining convex corner Anchor Points (if applicable/needed);
    8) Delete any redundant Anchor Points created by the Pathfinder operations in other parts of the object, if applicable/needed.
    See the bottommost sets of paths below for the final appearance. As you can see, they have the right  angular ends/corners with straight segments. If you wish a more lively apearance at ends/corners, you may leave (or create) a certain concave curvature of (some of) these segments.
    The brushes are shown at double size for enhanced visibility of details, and then a few close(r)ups.

  • PsElements10 - Brush Options, Hue Jitter

    I lately installed PSElements 10 (on Windows 7), and i'm observing something i don't understand with the brushes Hue Jitter Option.
    The official definition for Brush Option - Hue Jitter is :
    "Sets the rate at which the stroke color switches between the foreground and background colors. Higher values cause more frequent switches between the two colors than lower values."
    And that's usually how it works.
    Example => basic brush, foreground color : red; background color: green; when hue jitter is at 0, the drawed line is red; when Hue Jitter is >0, the drawed line switches from red to green. No problem.
    But then, i choose a special Brush (the Butterflies, for an example) => The appear in many different colors (not only red and green)
    That's a special Brush (and the Hue Jitter isn't doing anything with this Brush), well ok.
    And finally, i switch back to the basic Brush, and now the "Many different Colors" from the butterflies seem to be inherited by this basic brush, no way to make the Hue Jitter Option work again between foreground and background color.
    Is this a bug ?
    Regis (from France)

    Elements can be buggy from time to time as far as the brush settings go because those brushes were probably made in the full photoshop version, which has more options for varying the colors of a brush (color dynamics).
    In later versions of elements that is the wrong name for that option (hue jitter). It's actually color jitter as it's properly named in photoshop elements 2.
    In photoshop elements if you have the Keep these settings for all Brushes checked, then the options from one brush will carry on to the next.
    (If your using a tablet things may act strange from brush to brush if you have some of the dynamic settings enabled in Brush Tablet Options)
    Also sometimes the settings get "stuck" so you may have to reset the Brush Tool, which is probably what's happening in your case.

  • CS4 drag-resize brush option problem

    In CS4 the drag-to-resize brush option should display as red (the brush preview default color) but no color shows up. Nor with the drag-to-set-hardness shortcut either. Both shortcuts work. I cannot see the hardness change on screen but a quick check of the brushes indicates that it did indeed work. Just no color indicator for either shortcut.

    Thanks,

    John, some info please. Are you using the right mouse button plus Alt key? When changing the hardness, I have to hold the Shft key first and then the Alt key before I click and drag with the right mouse button. I am using Vista Ultimate 64 but that shouldn't make any difference. When some of these little irritants pop up, I usually restart PS and delete the preferences to see if anything changes. Just a suggestion.

  • Width Tool For Calligraphic Brushes

    I would really love it if the new width tool worked for calligraphic brushes so that once I drew a brush stroke with a pressure sensitive tablet I could adjust the width if I didn't like how it turned out.

    The pen tool does work on paths created with the brush, you have to select the path after drawing it to target which path the pen tool will edit.
    toggle CMD Y to se the paths, and then to go back to preview mode.

  • Outline of a drawing that is a mix between calligraphic brush and scatter brush

    Hello!
    Ok so, I made a drawing using a scatter brush and a calligraphic brush, it is all black, what I need now is to get the outline of the drawing as a whole! how do I do that? thank you!

    fefy,
    When I select two paths, one that has a calligraphic brush applied and one that has a scatter brush applied, and Object>Expand Appearance (remember to select the latter path itself rather than the scattered appearances), I get two groups:
    One group contains a closed path with the shape of the calligraphic brush and then a nostroke/nofill version of the original path.
    The other group contains individual objects that are (copies of) the object used for the scatter brush, with the same positions and shapes as in the unexpanded brushed path, and then a nostroke/nofill version of the original path.
    In other words, the same appearance, only expanded to individual objects
    What do you get?

  • Wet Edges brush option in Elements 11?

    I'm trying to find the wet edges option which is in a lot of tutorials for watercolor brushes but I can't find any tool options for it.

    You are looking at tutorials for Photoshop, where almost everything has more settings than are available in PSE. There is no wet edges, which is why you can't find it.

  • Brush Options in Flash CS3 not showing up

    Hello. I'm using Flash CS3 and I'm not able to see all of the
    options for the Brush tool. I don't have the pressure-sensitive
    option or the tilt option. Is there something I need to download or
    click on to get these options? I'm not sure why I don't have them
    available to me..my tool palette ends at the brush size and shape
    options at the bottom. Any ideas please?

    jgleica,
    > I tried that but it must be the biggest it can get.
    there's no
    > arrows or indicator it can be resized further in the
    corners
    > of the tools palette.
    Woops, it's the Flash CS4 Tools panel that has more resizing
    options.
    In Flash CS3, you should at least be able to adjust the width
    of the Tools
    panel (click the very top, in the area of the panel that has
    double arrows).
    The wider version of that panel gives it two columns, and
    shortens it --
    which might just show your missing buttons.
    > There's just empty space there. Is there an extension
    pack
    > or something I should've downloaded maybe?
    There may be updates since Flash CS3 was originally
    released, but there
    aren't any extension packs that add graphics tablet choices
    to the Tools
    panel: they're definitely supposed to be there, and Flash CS3
    shipped with
    those buttons in the original release.
    What happens if you select Default from the Workspace

  • No pressure sensitivity button in brush options in flash cc

    i have been using flash for the past 2 weeks and have been unable to access the option to enable pressure sensitivity for my wacom tablet. I have tried resizing the windows and restarting flash and i have had no luck

    That's probably a driver issue and not Flash. try reinstalling your driver, or maybe go to the previous one instead. Also there is a thing called the Feel it driver on Wacom's site that might work for you.

  • Brush options missing

    Hi, since CS6 there are no options for pressure anymore. I use a wacom tablet intuous4. Does anyone have the same problem?

    I experienced the problem until I re-installed the Wacom system preference app. I would suggest reinstalling it and see if the pressure options reappear.

  • How can I make a brush that starts and ends in a thin line?

    I am looking to make a brush that I can use for cartooning in CS6 that starts out thin, gets thicker with pressure (I have a cintiq), and ends in a thin line. Does anyone have the expertise to make one?
    Thank you.

    I watched the first half of the tutorial from your link and some parts of the rest. It is a good tutorial. He is using an art brush which profile was created from an elliptical shape with sharp corners which gives that ink kind of appearance which is good for this kind of style. Most of the time though I prefer the appearance of the rounded ends of the calligraphic brushes. Also one advantage of the calligraphic brushes is that it can change its size or the size of the selected strokes with the [ and ] keys on the keyboard while with the art brushes this is done by changing the stroke weight which also can change the weight of calligraphic brushes in addition to the [ and ] keys.
    Like in the tutorial I often use a similar workflow ending up with the brush strokes converted to filled paths but I simply use expand appearance then remove the unwanted parts with the Eraser brush which can be made pressure sensitive in the options that you get when double clicking the Eraser tool. This is less precise than the technique the guy is using in the video tutorial but it is quick, I like  the hand touch appearance of the imperfections, and it also allows me to paint the white (transparent) highlights like for example the highlights on the booths of my cowboy. The Blob brush is the tool above the Eraser in the Tool panel and works basically the same like the Eraser but it adds to the fill of a path and it also has these and more options when you double click it. I use it most of the time in a combination with the Eraser to add or remove final details of illustrations started initially with brush strokes and then expanded. And like in the video tutorial I also like to keep a copy with the stage before expanding the brush strokes in case I need some changes on brush stroke level.
    I also use a different technique for adding new color fills on the illustrations instead of cutting paths with the knife. I don't like the knife because I often do not like the first cut which I may realize later when undo is not the best workflow. What I do is copy paste in front the path and use the pencil tool set to edit the selected paths and change the shape of the selected path similar to using the knife but the pencil has to start and end on the path. The advantage of this for me is that the new fill with the different color is overlapping the original fill behind and when later I decide to change its shape I don't get gaps between the two colors which is what will happen if the knife was used.
