Calling a stored function in Oracle 8.1.5 which has out parameters

Hi,
The issue is, I am unable to call or execute a Oracle8.1.5 stored function which has 1 return value and 1 out parameter from neither from .NET nor from VB6.
If I use MSDAORA.1 : wrong number or types of arguments in call to function displays even though everything is perfect.
If i use OraOLEDB.Oracle.1 provider (even though my client and server are 8.1.5,i used this) it says Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed. as it is not 8.1.7 or higher. I want to use 8.1.5 only. Kindly give me a solution for this.
If i use 8.1.7 client for the server 8.1.5 my stored function is executing and returning the out parameter perfectly in .NET using MSDAORA.1. But I have to use 8.1.5 client and servers only. Please Help me.
Thanks a lot in advance
Krishna Mohan

Functions normally have only 'in' parameters and return a single out value. Writing a function with an out parameter is risky, at best.
Rewrite the function, and make it a procedure instead. Then I would bet the problem will no longer exist.

    The first solution is to not do that in java in the first place.
    DDL should be in script files which are applied to oracle outside of java.
    Other than I believe there are some existing stored procedures in Oracle that take DDL strings and process them. Your user has to have permission of course. You can track them down via the documentation.

    Thank you for your suggestion.
    I tried it, but got the same result. I think the difference in the syntax is due to the Oracle versus SQL92 standard
    conformance. Your statament is the Oracle version and mine is the SQL92. I think both statements are acceptable
    by the Oracle.

  • Simple call to stored function from asp (vbscript) adodb

    please let me know if this question would be better suited to another forum.
    i am simply attempting to call an oracle stored function that returns a varchar2 from an asp vbscript page using adodb. i have calling of stored procedures working fine.
    attempting to call the function with the following code:
    set sp_aprvd_cr = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Command")
    sp_aprvd_cr.ActiveConnection = MM_MHR_CONN_STR_STRING
    sp_aprvd_cr.CommandType = 4
    sp_aprvd_cr.CommandTimeout = 0
    sp_aprvd_cr.Prepared = true
    sp_aprvd_cr.CommandText = "PMS.sp_hpmsq054_aprvd_cr"
    sp_aprvd_cr.Parameters.Append sp_aprvd_cr.CreateParameter("IP_PMSPT_ID", 200, 1,10,sp_aprvd_cr__P_PMSPT_ID)
    sp_aprvd_cr.Parameters.Append sp_aprvd_cr.CreateParameter("return_param", adVarchar, adParamOutput)
    set rst_aprvd_cr = sp_aprvd_cr.Execute
    suspect that preparing the return code is where i am having troubles.
    any examples or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks in advance.

    Return value from stored function must be the first parameter in the parameters collection.
    So, try this instead,
    sp_aprvd_cr.Parameters.Append sp_aprvd_cr.CreateParameter("return_param", adVarchar, adParamOutput)
    sp_aprvd_cr.Parameters.Append sp_aprvd_cr.CreateParameter("IP_PMSPT_ID", 200, 1,10,sp_aprvd_cr__P_PMSPT_ID)Cheers,

  • Calling a stored procedure using Oracle Ole Db provider

    I am looking for an example of syntax used to call a stored procedure from VB.Net using the Oracle OleDB provider. I have been using the Microsoft provider MSDAORA but need to move to the Oracle provider due to upgrade. The syntax used with the MSDAORA provider does not work with the Oracle provider.

    Hi,
    Please refer to the Populate DataSet with Multiple REF Cursors Sample available at the following URL:
    http://otn.oracle.com/sample_code/tech/windows/ole_db/oledb92/index.html
    Check the PopulateProducts method available in the ViewProducts.cs file that call a database stored procedure "getProductsInfo" . This code is written in C# you may want to convert it to VB.NET syntax.

    Taking for granted that it works, I wonder what's different, probably the output is defined as Cursor...

    You mean because of this line?
    cs.registerOutParameter(5,OracleTypes.CURSOR);You can either use a cursor or use a function that returns a SQL type instead of the PL/SQL type.
    Here is sample code using a cursor
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE SCOTT.local_type IS OBJECT (
        empno   NUMBER(4),
        ename   VARCHAR2(10));
    CREATE OR REPLACE TYPE SCOTT.local_tab_type IS TABLE OF local_type;
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE SCOTT.test_refcursor_pkg
    AS
        TYPE my_ref_cursor IS REF CURSOR;
         -- add more cursors as OUT parameters
         PROCEDURE   test_proc(p_ref_cur_out OUT test_refcursor_pkg.my_ref_cursor);
    END test_refcursor_pkg;
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY SCOTT.test_refcursor_pkg
    AS
         PROCEDURE  test_proc(p_ref_cur_out OUT test_refcursor_pkg.my_ref_cursor)
         AS
            l_recs local_tab_type;
         BEGIN
             -- Get the records to modify individually.
             SELECT local_type(empno, ename) BULK COLLECT INTO l_recs
             FROM EMP;
             -- Perform some complex calculation for each row.
             FOR i IN l_recs.FIRST .. l_recs.LAST
             LOOP
                 DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(l_recs(i).ename);
             END LOOP;
             -- Put the modified records back into the ref cursor for output.
             OPEN p_ref_cur_out FOR
             SELECT * from TABLE(l_recs);
             -- open more ref cursors here before returning
         END test_proc;
    END;
    SET SERVEROUTPUT ON SIZE 1000000
    DECLARE

  • Calling user defined function in Oracle BI Answers?

    Search for EVALUATE function you can call function and pass parameters
    Example:
    EVALUATE Function
    This function is intended for scalar and analytic
    calculations.
    Syntax: EVALUATE('DB_Function(%1)', {
    Comma separated Expression})
    Example: SELECT
    e.lastname,sales.revenue,EVALUATE('dense_rank()
    over(order by %1
    )',sales.revenue) FROM sales s, employee e;

  • Can I call MS Excel Function in Oracle

    Hi everyone,
    I prototyped my application in Microsoft Excel. In this prototype, I'm using the BETADIST() function, which returns the cumulative beta probability density function. And, yes, if you're like me, and not a statistician, it's pretty crazy. Just for fun, check out the wikipedia page on it, and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, so now, I'm trying to perform the same functionality as that function in my Oracle APEX 4.0/Oracle 10g-R2 app.
    I've studied this function a bunch, and I couldn't find an equivalent function in Oracle to do what this function does. CUME_DIST... nope, DBMS_STATS_FUNC... nope. So, I assumed I would need to figure out what exactly the function does and basically rewirte it in Oracle using PL/SQL. I've already got questions out on Statistics and Excel forums trying to figure that out.
    But, before I go any further and reinvent the wheel by coding out the logic embedded in this function (which is very hairy, of course), I wanted to check with you all and see if there's a way to invoke this MS Excel function through Oracle. Not sure if an external procedure can get to an Excel library, or how to do it if it can.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Mark

    I'm pretty sure this BETADIST exists in Java already.Not natively I think.
    But one can download Cern's COLT Libraries for High Performance Scientific and Technical Computing in Java.
    Loading the libraries via loadjava
    loadjava -user michael/xxxx@oracle_server:1521:oracle_sid -verbose -force -order -resolve -thin colt.jar concurrent.jarand creating a function
    create or replace function betadist (alpha number, beta number, c number)
         return number
      as
         language java
         name 'cern.jet.stat.Gamma.incompleteBeta(double, double, double) return double';
    /is rather straightforward.
    Calling it
    SQL> select betadist(4,5,0.4) from dual
    BETADIST(4,5,0.4)
             ,4059136
    1 row selected.the result coincides quite well with the example given in http://www.excelfunctions.net/Excel-Beta-Dist-Function.html.

  • Calling database stored  function from Entity Object

    Hi,
    I want to call a database stored function from create() method of Entity Object.
    Database function returns some value.
    Can anybody suggest me some way to do it.

    You can try the following:
    make a String whit your function call, I dont know if this is the correct SQL syntax for a function, it should be for a stored procedure.
    String call = "begin; callyourfunction; end;"
    PreparedStatement ps = getDBTransaction().createPreparedStatement(call,0);
    ps.execute();
    ResultSet rs = ps.getResultSet();
    You can now read the data from the function from the rowset.
    Be sure to cleanup the PreparedStatement when your done whit it to avoid open database connections.
    ps.close();ps=null;

    In some contects varchar2 variable limit is 32512 characters... October 16, 2003

    Interesting to note is the fact that varchar2 variables as parameters to stored
    procedures (in in/out out) may be "only" 32512 bytes long.
    I've checked this in Java and Perl. 32512 is the last value that works, for any
    bigger it throws:
    Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01460: unimplemented or
    unreasonable conversion requested
    But in PL/SQL as you said 32767

  • Calling a function from SQL that has Out Parameters

    Hello folks,
    I am not sure if this is do-able, but here is my scenrio at hand. I have a database function that accepts a few IN parameters and OUT parameters. I want one of the Out parameters to display as part of my select statement. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    No you cannot use a function with out parameters in sql statements.
    If possible make the function return that value, then use it in select.( imean instead of OUT parameter, get that OUT parameter through RETURN)
