Had you started there, you would have found lots of different answers. For one thing it is fairly easy to write code that will test what is the smallest sum that can be obtained from a given set. This means that all the Genetic Algorithm freaks out there will say, "Hey I can code of a GA to find optimal sets" and they will start right in on the hardest sets up in the 90's cause they want to show off the power of GAs.
Meanwhile the simulated annealing folks will target the numbers in the 50s because they are not quite so cocky as the GA crowd but they still want to show off.
And finally us low brow mathematician sorts will start with some grubby backtracking exhaustive search algorithm and see if we can't get it to replicate the result for N = 4.

Fitness for Shortest path using a genetic algorithm

Hi.
I have this problem:
I'm doing a program that has a map and two points. the map has wall that are not valid positions.
I have used a A* algorithm to calculate the shortest path and is working fine.
now i'm implementing a genetic algorithm to solve the problem but i'm not having sucess.
My genetic operator are directions (left, right, up and down).
I'm not being able to find a goodfitness function to solve the problem.
can someone tell me a god function or here I can found information about that?
I have been searching on google and I have not yet had sucess.
I have tryed two diferent fitness tecniques:
- add 1 for each step and if it finds a wall or gets out of the map add the maximum value (mapsize*mapsize).
- the other one is add the valid steps and if it finds a wall or gets out of the map add the number of necessary steps to gets to destination. the valid steps has a weight of 30% and the necessary steps has a weight of 70% (i have tryed to use diferent weight).
Can someone help me?

How about adapting your TSP code as follows. Your graph G(V, E) has two special vertices: v_s and v_d (start and destination). Let a candidate solution consist of a permutation of V\{v_s, v_d}u{v_m} where v_m is a new marker vertex whose purpose is to allow you to treat part of the candidate solution as irrelevant. Given candidate solution v_0 v_1 v_2 ... v_n v_m v_n+1 ... the weight is c(v_s, v_0) + c(v_0, v_1) + ... + c(v_n-1, v_n) where c(v_a, v_b) is the cost of the edge ab.

iPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them. Signal is strong and call quality (me hearing the other) is still very good but it looks as if I’m going on mute while I’m not muting my iPhone. When dropping the call and re-dialing it works fine again. It’s a brand new iPhone 5S but it now happened already 4 or 5 times in 2 days.
It feels like a hardware/iOS problem and not a network issue. It happend with iOS7.03 but I just see 7.0.4 is available so will install that one now.

After a recent update, the Bookmarks menu has an extra folder called "All Bookmarks" which appears to be a copy of the bookmarks. It is causing problems and how do I fix it?

I recently updated Firefox. The Bookmarks menu shows a new menu item called "All Bookmarks". It appears to be a copy of the bookmarks. When I try to add a new bookmark, the All Bookmarks folder is the only one shown in the dialog. I tried deleting the All Bookmarks folder, but then nothing is shown in the dialog when I try to add a new bookmark.
If I do add a new bookmark, it is put under the All Bookmarks folder and does not show up under the top-level item I want it under. Any ideas about what I can do to fix this.
The update went normally without my intervention.

I was able to fix the problem after following the bookmark backup and restore procedures on the following page:

I also had to restart Firefox so that the "Bookmark This Page" dialog would show the normal bookmarks.

Genetic Algorithm help please!!!!

Hi people, i really need help badly with a project im doing as im not very good at programming yet,
The project is as follows
Project Allocation
This project will develop a Genetic Algorithm that will evolve project allocations, with the aim of maximising several criteria: giving every student the highest ranked project possible, spreading the project load between lecturers etc. It should work for a single group of students, and for several groups. This project could be coded in any suitable language.
Any help in coding this would be really welcomed!

My email service recently changed. How do I change the address that my email icon attaches to from the old email to the new email? The icon is the postage stamp on the bottom bar.

My email provider just changed the path to access my email so my "postage stamp" icon still accesses the old non existent email address. How do I remap the icon to access the new email path?

You don't "remap" the icon; it is just an alias to your Mail application.
Open your Mail application, go to Preferences, and then click on Accounts. Call your ISP and, with Accounts open, ask him for the proper settings for you to enter for (or, go to their website and look up the information yourself):
Incoming mail server
user name
password
outgoing mail server
plus all ports (numbers)

Every time I print the file reduces to the size of a postage stamp on paper

I am running Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 on my computer, and every time I try to print a PDF, the contents of the file print in approximately a 1" by 1" square that looks like a postage stamp on the corner of the paper. I haven't changed any print settings from their defaults since installing the software.
It doesn't matter if I make the file myself or if it is a previously made PDF. Additionally, all of the files print correctly from other computers. How can I correct this problem?

Interfacing a C++ Console Application Genetic Algorithm with LabVIEW

Hi,
I am have recently modified the GENESIS genetic algorithm using C++ so that it runs on a Windows machine (before it only ran under UNIX). In my experimental work the aim is to control everything using LabVIEW, including this Genetic algorithm.
My problem comes from the fact that the Genetic Algorithm is set-up as a console application, a library file is created containing the input parameters of the VI, then this is joined with an evaluation function that is dependant on the library file an an executable is created.
I need to take some information collected from LabVIEW and give it to the genetic algorithm, but I don't know how to do this.
Any Ideas?

You can run most applications from a command line using the location/application.exe (where the location is where the executable is stored), all c++ applications run using: int main (int argc, char **argv); where the argc is the number of arguments and argv is essentially a string table with the parameters passed to the program (will be used as code) the output if a command line application is the std out which can be piped to file or wired out from the standard out terminal. To pass parameters from your LV code to the command line you should know the parameter list (sometimes empty).

Keep getting an ERROR MESSAGE on my postage stamp mail program

I will be moving or creating an email message and my postage stamp mail freezes. THEN I get an error message saying THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MAIL AND YOU NEED TO EITHER QUIT MAIL AND REOPEN AND REBUILD LATER OR QUIT AND REBUILD NOW.
EACH time this happens I re open mail to find all my messages back where they were before the error message - nothing deleted and answered mails looking as it they were unanswered.
Why is this happening and what do I do to fix it?

If you have recently updated to OX S 10.5.6 it is possible that the Mail application did not update correctly and to resolve that you can download [Mac Mail Update|http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mail_Update] and install it.
Required in some instances after the 10.5.6 update due to stability issues with Mail. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2486 Technical bulletin provides more information on the background as to why the update might be necessary and other steps to resolve Mail issues.

Calling all Dell L501X owners! Specifically the i7 with Nvidia GT435
Can anyone comment on if they are having any issues running dual monitors with KDE?
My issue is that the 'org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper' is called randomly and switches the displays LVDS + DP1 between cloned and singular when I've had it set to extended via both TwinView and randr.
I'm now running XFCE without problems but its bugging me that I can't use KDE.
My initial post was placed here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=162545 but I have created this to try and find where the peculiarities lie. I'm connected to a Dell U2311 monitor via DisplayPort

Problem fixed now as mentioned in other post. Seems that it doesn't like the function keys been set to default as opposed to the media keys in the BIOS settings. Hope this helps someone in the future. Surprised no-one else has run across this problem.
If anyone know of a fix for this would be appreciated. Save me from doing yoga with my fingers when trying to do simple keyboard shortcuts. Currently using latest Dell BIOS "A04" (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/ … erId=K5CNF)

My Office 2004 docs from leopard when sent to PC are the size of postage stamps

I recently upgraded to Leopard on my iMac. I have Office 2004. No problems previously.
Now when I send my 2004 Word docs to a PC when they are opened they are the size of postage stamps - help!

PDF's printing the size of postage stamp

Recently when I try to print a pdf from any program on any printer, an 8.5X11 document will print the size of a postage stamp in the upper right or left hand corner. Settings in printer drivers look fine and print preview looks fine, but actual print is very, very tiny. This has been happening for the last 3 weeks, but pdf's were printing properly before this. I have not made any changes to my computer or to either of our 2 printers. One other person in our office is having problems with this, but everyone else is printing pdf's just fine. Could there have been an issue with an update?

Adobe Reader X; printer driver shows document size as 8.5X11 and the print preview appears to fill the 8.5X11 space. Document and paper size both set at 8.5X11. Also verify portrait/landscape is set properly - print 100% - print actual size - choose paper source by pdf page size - output size same as original size - uncheck shrink to fit...

Photograph into a postage stamp?

I have Photoshop CS3 for Mac and I am trying to change a photo into a postage stamp with the scalloped edges a postage stamp has - I did a few tutorials online that did not work. Does anyone know how to do this?

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.
