Calling Unix comands from java.

Hi All,
there are a couple of issues I am facing. would really appreciate if somebody could help.
(1) Is there a way to execute a unix comand using jsp and display the results on the jsp page? I know that we can use the Runtime.getRuntime().exec() to perform the command and thats working fine in my case. but, which would be the best way to show the results on the jsp screen (e.g: when I use the java API to input the command ls -1, the file names should be listed to my jsp page).

Theres another strange issue too. The jsp code is:

I can see that the directory Java_Unix_Temp_11 is being made. but, I dont see the file that should be created as the result of the command: ls -1 > /tmp/presley_test5.txt. Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

As discussed zillion times, > (output redirection) is performed by a command shell.
exec this:

I want to call a UNIX command from java. When issue the command 'htpasswd -c filename username' on UNIX terminal, it asks for the new password and the then confirmation password again (yeah, unfortunately the htpasswd installed on our system does not allow you proivde the password on the command line. So have to work interactively ). Now, I have written a simple java program RunCommand.java. I am hardcoding the password for the htpasswd command in the file (in the real situation, password will be generated dynamically). I want to issue 'java RunCommand' on the UNIX command line and get back the command prompt without being asked for the password twice. The code is below, but the Outputstream does not work as expected. It always asks for inputs. Any idea? Many thanks.

The problem is that there isn't a "synchronize" command, and the
RUNTIME.exec(rt,'rm ' || :p_file) don't works (it does nothing) because
the SRW.SET_AFTER_FORM_HTML has a large delay and the following
command is ignored.
How can I solve it?

How to call gnuplot command from java

Hi there,
In our course, we are required to develop an GUI for gnuplot. In case you don't know about gnuplot, it's a plotting program and has lots of command. We want to use java and swing, but now we don't know how to call gnuplot command from java, or how to execute a shell command(script) from java.
By the way, since we need read in files with several columns of data and allow user to select a column, we want to use JTable. Is that reasonable?

Call PERL script from JAVA

I am facing a problem in running a PERL script in JAVA in UNIX box..
I am able to call ther perlscript.
Perl script has

Perl script request for the INPUT(name) .
My Java program is

Here is the problem tat IT IS says error =2 ..What has to be the solution so tat i can CALL PERL SCRIPT as similiar to running it separatly in prompt { >perl test.pl }

When i run this script in perl test.pl in prompt (UNIX BOX), i am gettin the request for name "Enter Your Name:____ " but when i call this script from Java it doesn't request for name and moreover the process doesnt ends (use ctrl+c to come out of the process).When i come out forcefully it shows the ERROR=2.
My requirement is such tat need to call a PERL SCRIPT from java so tat java process give the control to PERL script and it will continue the process..
Sample scenario:
Java move a file and store it in a new FOLDER
MY perl script will read the file in new FOLDER.
here the perl script will get the file name for processing... My issue comes here .$name is not be prompted while calling thro java..

Problem when calling a report from java

Hi all,
i have created a report using ireport which contains arabic data.
when i execute the report from ireport to generate a pdf file it works.
however when i call this report from java i have an exception"
Could not create the report Could not load the following font :
pdfFontName : ARIAL.TTF
pdfEncoding : Identity-H"
the pdfFont i used it in ireport, also the pdfEncoding.
did anyone passed with the same problem

Common idiom for the pointer in the above is to pass it back and forth to your java code as a java long. You cast it it and from your class pointer. Provide an explicit java method to free it when done. Besides providing the explicit method also implement a finalizer to free it as well (however that is a fail safe and should not be relied upon.)

Execute unix commands from Java

Hi,
I have a client application running on windows. This client should connect to a unix server and check for the existence of a file and display the result as "File found/File not found". In order to connect from windows to the unix server, I used the sockets and the connection is successfully established. The second part is to check for the presence of the file in unix server. I searched in google.com and the option I found to execute a unix command from java is the "Runtime.exec()". Runtime.exec is considered as the less effective (not a favorable) one.
Is there any other option available (other than the Runtime) to execute the unix command from java? Can you please let me know.

You want something to run on the server, not the client.
That means that something must in fact being running on the server before the client does anything at all.
For example telnet. Or a J2EE server application.
So is something like that running?
If not then there absolutely no way to do what you want, even with Runtime.exec().
If yes then what you do depends on what is running. So Runtime.exec() would be pointless if a J2EE server was running.

Hi need to excute unix script from java application.

My problem is that using the waitFor() statement stuck the the script. if i don't use the waitFor() it works good but then i don't know when the script is finished.
Any idea?

The problem is likely to be that you script is either waiting for input or has filled the stdout buffer and you are not emptying it. Search this forum for this as its been answered many times before.
