Camera Raw Default Tone Curve Function / Coordinates

Hi,
I would like to know where I can find the function / coordinates for the Lightroom / ACR default tone curve that is applied to any image.
I think it's the red one in that image, or it's very very close:
I want to generate a lookup table to match it's effect. For now I plotted something that is very very close but I lack precision at the bottom of my curve.
Cheers,
Thomas

I'm confused - I thought the default was linear. I mean, this is probably not what you want, but here is a curve which makes PV2012's linear tone curve equivalent to PV2010 linear, or at least that's how I call it:

  • Bug in Camera Raw's tone curve?

Phil Harvey has released ExifTool 8.04 yesterday, and in the release notes he says, 'WARNING: Some Adobe utilities (Camera Raw 5.6, DNG Converter 5.6, Lightroom 2.6) have a bug which causes the tone curve to be incorrect for edited ARW images from some Sony cameras (A500, A550, A700, A850, A900, and maybe others)'.
Can any Sony Alpha users confirm this? And will there be an intermediate bug fix, or will we have to wait for the next ACR version? Does anyone know when the bug was introduced, i. e. does it make sense to revert back to ACR 5.5?
UPDATE: I have tried editing an A900 ARW raw file with ACR 5.6. I have changed the tone curve, saved the file, inspected the XMP file, loaded and edited the raw file again, saved it again, inspected the XMP file again. As far as I can tell, no problems with the tone curve. So I am wondering if Phil's allegation holds any water in the first place, and if so then under which circumstances the bug will emerge.

This means, that offsets within a tag are wrongly assumed to be fixed; my comment above related to the offsets to the tags themselves.
    Sorry for the confusion.

  • How do I copy Camera RAW defaults to another computer?

I use Photoshop CS6 and Adobe Camera RAW to process RAW files (D700).  I have ACR preferences set to make the defaults ASA specific, which means I have 41 defaults for ACR.  I have a folder of images shot with the D700 that includes one image for each ASA the camera can select when auto ASA is activated in the D700, that's where I get 41 ASA values.  I use the images in this folder to set a default for each ASA value and then select one at a time in Camera RAW and click to set a new default for ACR (Adobe Camera RAW).  These defaults are saved in some location on the computer, but I don't know where.  I would like to copy these saved defaults to another computer that is also running Photoshop CS6.  Does anyone know where the defaults are located, or is there a better way to accomplish this task?

If I understand what you said, I think this will only save RAW Defaults for that specific image conditions.  I have the RAW converter set to make it specific to image ASA and for the D700 it can set 41 different ASA values for the image.  I have 41 Camera RAW Defaults for the D700 and would like to transfer all to the second computer, that's the reason I am looking for options to accomplish this task.
I have a folder with 41 D700 NEF files with each having a different ASA value.  I select this folder of images in Camera RAW, adjust each image to the defaults I want - the main difference is noise settings.  When I have the settings I want, I click the Done button.  I then open the images again in Camera RAW, select one at a time and select the "Save New Camera Raw Defaults".  Now when I open new NEF files for the D700 it will automatically apply the Default I want based on the image ASA.
I currently copy the folder with the 41 images that was saved with the defaults I want and open them one at a time and save a new default on the second computer.  If I copy the "Camera RAW" folder it should give me all the same defaults, custom camera profiles, custom curver, settings, etc.
I have not tried this yet, but if it works it will save a lot of time keeping the two computers in sync relative to these parameters.

HELP. ............Hi folks hope some one can help me please.Having a problem in Bridge I open my images in ACR,  as I open files in a folder and lets say they are labeled in yellow  they are all going back to  the camera raw default , in other words no matter what work I have done, inc cropping they  all go back to ,as they came out of camera. What on earth is happening? I am on PS CS6. I might point out everything was working normally up to  yesterday, when this first started.
I recently changed computer to 64bit from 32bit, not sure if this causing  the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.

    Robert,
Would you be so kind to rephrase your question with concise, precise information and without any "let's say that" hypotheticals?  Sorry, I can't quite follow you.
Also please give exact versions of Photoshop CS6 (13.what.what), of Bridge and of your OS.
    Thanks.

  • Why can't I save camera raw defaults?

I am currently unable to reset my camera raw defaults in CS5 (Camera raw 6.5).  When I click on "Save Camera Raw Defaults", the changes do not show up when I open up a new image using Adobe Bridge. I seem to be stuck with the changes I made some time ago. What could be happening?

Camera Raw uses the same settings you used last time to open a file.  That's just the way it works.  The defaults you set will be used on any image you haven't opened before.
In order to revert an image that's been opened before to the new defaults, you need to do one of the following:
    1.  Choose Camera Raw Defaults from the menu:
    2.  Depending on how you have configured Camera Raw to remember your past settings, either delete the sidecar XMP files or go into Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw... and purge your Camera Raw cache if you'd like to throw away all previous settings and have future opens use your new defaults.

  • Camera Raw Defaults & Presets not showing menus (BRIDGE)

    Hi There
I just upgraded to a new version of PS CS3 & Bridge and the option to apply Presets, or to Apply Camera Raw Defaults is not showing when I right click a file in Bridge. It also doesnt show up in the menu. I need to be able to Batch process hundreds of photos at a time and then convert them to Tif formats. I used to be able to do this by applying my Adobe Camera Defaults to many images at once. How do I do this now????
I am running Bridge 2.0.0975 and PS 10. Help!! This is critical for me!!!
    thanks so much!

    > Even if old versions are available for download, having older versions available on disk in case of malfunction is a perfectly acceptable practice.
    > This applies to any update of any software.
Agreed. I have gigabytes of disk space packed full of iso's, dmgs, and zips for
(almost) all of the software I've installed on my computers. It's a pain to
manage sometimes, but I know I can go back and reinstall PS7 (for instance) if I
need to even though I have no clue where the CD is at. It's just one part of my
configuration management and backup strategy. I don't have a sysadmin to take
care of this kind of thing for me any more, unfortunately, so I have to do it
    myself.
This plan also has the advantage that I don't have to be online to download
older versions from a vendors site (if it's even available) or go searching for
a seeded torrent (if it's not).
I'm not saying this approach is good for every one or even good for anyone but
me, but it is a perfectly valid way of doing things.

  • Camera raw default does not remove crop

In bridge, when I go to edit>develop settings>camera raw defaults, the crop is not removed to get me back to default. How do we rectify this? That makes me open any cropped raw in raw dialogue and manually remove the crop. No good.

  • What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

Really, this is a question you should be asking yourself...
What do you shoot? Makes a difference...
Typical ISO that you shoot? Makes a difference...
Shooting for clients or yourself? Makes a difference...
Look, there is no magic bullet...the ACR/LR "Default" should only be changed for those adjustments you make 70-90% of the time and sould not be confused with image by image adjustments...
So, as asked, your question can not really be answered other than to say, use a default that suits you.

  • Difference between 'Camera Raw Defaults' option and Default button

I am using ACR 4.6 under CS3 in Windows.
If I open an image and click the Default button above the exposure sliders, all the tonal settings are reset to the defaults, but Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation are not altered.
If I select 'Camera Raw Defaults' from the menu the tonal settings are reset to the defaults as above, but Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation are also reset to 0.
I was under the impression that the Default button and the 'Camera Raw Defaults' option did the same thing, but apparently not. What is the difference?

The default button you are talking about only affects the sliders in the same group with the button.

  • Camera raw defaults

Hi, I have been trying things out in camera raw in cs5.5 extended and I cant work out how to reset the default settings. Every time I open an image in raw everything is obviously wrong. Can anyone please help?

    Welcome to the forum!
According to a handy excerpt from the book Camera Raw Controls, the "Default control" (circled in red in the image below) "provides a simple way to return to the Camera Raw Default settings in the Basic panel based on your current Default settings (which can be changed)."
And here's a great introductory video on the version of Camera Raw that shipped with Photoshop CS5:

  • Camera Raw default opening in PSE9

I recently installed PSE9 on my MAC alongside my previous version PSE6. I prefer some of the options(ie. Bridge instead of Organizer, etc.). After processing an image in Camera Raw the image always opens in the default PSE9. How can I make ACR open my images directly into PSE6?

    See if this helps:

  • Camera RAW auto tone settings applied to jpegs

I posted this in the Windows Bridge forum, but a camera raw preference controls this so I am also posting here.
On jpeg files without any RAW setting applied, Bridge still applies RAW settings to the thumbnails and the preview are thus display incorrectly. Opening the file shows the jpeg as it should be, without RAW settings applied.
I have RAW preferences set to apply auto settings to RAW files without any current settings.
I have my RAW settings to open jpegs in RAW *only* when they already have settings. If I set this to disable jpeg support, then the RAW settings are not automatically applied to jpegs without existing settings. aka, Bridge redoes the thumbnails without the auto setting.
While it is correct to apply auto tone to RAW files without settings, jpeg files are already "developed/printed" and should not get additional auto develop settings automatically applied.
    My Bridge is 4.0.4.2
    Raw is 6.3

  • Camera Raw 6.6 missing functions

I use PSE 10 with Camera Raw 6.6. It appears to be missing functions such as the paint brush and the ability to mask. I've tried downloading it again, but the additional functions did not reappear. Any suggestions?

Masking is only available in conjunction with sharpening under the detail tab. Hold down the alt key whist dragging the making slider to see how sharpening will be applied to edges.
There is no adjustment brush tool available in the Elements version of camera raw. It’s only available in CS6 or Lightroom.

  • Save new camera raw defaults for already opened smart objects.

I've a question about Photoshop and Smart Objects, as I like to use Smart Filters. I open my raw photos in Camera Raw, I adjust them and then continue editing in Photoshop as smart objects.
My problem is that if during editing in Photoshop I adjust again some parameters reopening the photo in Camera Raw, there's no way I can save the new adjustments for the next time I want to open the raw again.
I happened to me I changed a lot of parameters and I wanted to have them as defaults for that photo.
Quite simply: if I I want to save new Camera Raw edits as defaults for that photo, how can I do?
P.S. I tried saving a new snapshot, but they disappear if I open the raw again.

Thanks for your answer. Actually inserting the photo as a linked object does what I want, but it's awkward, slow and not so immediate. Also I have to open the photo from the beginning like that, as a new layer.
There should be an option inside camera raw like "update original with new settings".
