Can anyone here at the forum please explain what is"maintenance sripts".

What is the difference between -daily, weekly, monthly, maintenance scripts and should this procedure be done on Macbook Pro's?

More about Maintenance Scripts (and how to run them) here:
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
Yes, you allow them to run periodically. You can also use the free utility Onyx to do this:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
as well as the alternatives mentioned in the first link.
Repairing permissions is also an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
And so save you asking:
What are permissions?
Every file and folder on a Mac OS X hard drive has a set of permissions—settings that determine which user(s) have access to each item, and exactly what that access is. For example, permissions dictate whether or not a particular user can open and edit a particular file. But permissions also determine which items the operating system—or specific parts of it—can access and modify, and which files are accessible by applications.
What does repairing permissions do?
The Repair Disk Permissions function—the process that actually performs the task of repairing permissions—examines certain files and folders on your Mac’s hard drive to see if their current permissions settings are what Mac OS X expects them to be; if discrepancies are found, the offending permissions are changed to match the expected settings.
(In Mac OS X 10.3 and later, repairing permissions also performs one other, unrelated, task: If the invisible /tmp symbolic link—which is linked to the /private/tmp directory—is missing, the link will be recreated.)
Why is it necessary to repair permissions?
If permissions on particular files are “incorrect”—i.e., not what Mac OS X expects them to be or not what they need to be for your Mac’s normal operation—you can experience problems when the operating system tries to access or modify those files. For example, you may have trouble logging in to your account, printing, launching applications, or even starting up your Mac. Similarly, if an application—from Apple or a third-party developer—needs access to a particular file or folder to function, and the permissions on that item have changed in a way that prevents such access, the application may not function properly (or at all). The Repair Disk Permissions function can fix such problems by ensuring that certain files have the correct permissions.
There’s also a security element here: Many system-level files have permissions set a particular way so that applications or users that shouldn’t be meddling with those files can’t. If the permissions on certain system-level files somehow get changed so that access to those files is no longer restricted, you’ve got the potential for a major security issue. Repairing permissions can resolve such issues by resetting permissions on those files to prevent unauthorized access.
How do I repair permissions?
The Repair Disk Permissions function is part of Apple’s Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). After launching Disk Utility, select the desired disk—generally your startup disk—in the list to the left, then click the First Aid tab. At the bottom of the First Aid panel, click the Repair Disk Permissions button. (You could instead use the Verify Disk Permissions option to preview any potential repairs before performing them, but for most users there’s little benefit from this extra step.)
Permissions can also be repaired via the shell (Terminal) by using the command sudo diskutil repairPermissions /. However, it’s unlikely that the typical user will ever need to perform the task in this manner. It’s useful if for some reason Disk Utility itself won’t launch, or for repairing permissions on a remote Mac when connected via Remote Login (SSH), but otherwise you’re just as well served using Disk Utility.
How does the Repair Disk Permissions function know what the “correct” permissions are?
When you use Apple’s Installer utility to install software (such as Mac OS X itself or an OS X update), the installation package (the .pkg file you double-click to begin installation, or that Software Update downloads in the background for an automatic installation) generally leaves behind a receipt—a smaller Mac OS X package that includes information about every file installed, including the permissions each file should have. This receipt is placed in /Library/Receipts. When you run the Repair Disk Permissions function, it examines the receipts in the /Library/Receipts directory of the disk being repaired—which means the feature works only on volumes with Mac OS X installed—and compares the information in the receipt with the actual files on your drive. If the Repair Disk Permissions function finds a file with permissions that differ from what a receipt claims they should be, that file’s permissions are reset to their receipt-specified values. (If you’re curious about the information contained in a receipt, the easiest way to view it is to use the utility Pacifist; simply drag and drop the appropriate receipt into the Pacifist window and you’ll be presented with a list of all files installed by the similarly-named installation package, along with each file’s original permissions.)
It’s worth noting here that although the function is called “Repair Disk Permissions,” what is actually happening is that files’ permissions are being reset or restored to a particular state. It’s possible—though not common—for a particular file’s permissions to differ from what a receipt claims they should be without those permissions actually being “broken.”
Are all files affected by Repair Disk Permissions?
No. As you may have inferred from the above description, only those files installed using OS X’s Installer utility and whose installation packages leave behind a proper receipt in /Library/Receipts are affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function. This means that most of the files affected by the Repair Disk Permissions function are system-level files, application files, or system add-ons—not applications installed by drag-and-drop, and not your documents or other user-level files.
If repairing permissions is useful in general, why doesn’t Apple recommend it as routine maintenance?
Apple does, quite explicitly:
It’s a good idea to repair disk permissions as a regular maintenance task after upgrading or installing new software.
That’s taken from Mac Help—in both Panther and Tiger—right on your Mac. Similar statements can be found in other Support articles, one of which is:

Well, i was able to found a way to programatically define the resolution but i dont find for FPS and AspectRatio.
I finally end using a basepreset for each combination FPS * AspectRatio and then create the final preset file programatically by using the appropiate basepreset and replacing the resolution values.
Semms ZAC is .. hey where ¿?

This is your entire description of your problem. How do you propose anyone help you with this?
    I'll try:

  • Touch & Napster -to-go - Please can an administrator on the forum give us an official upda

Cat and Jason have said many, many times that the firmware for the Touch and Xtra "will be released, but I couldn't give you a specific date at this time I'm afraid." (Cat) and "will be worth the wait" (Jeremy).
Now, according to them, the only link we the end-user has to the company's insides there will be a firmware update for the players.
<EM>However</EM>, they never mentioned what the update will address. Will it solve the USB charging irritation, will it add MTP and PlaysForSure, will it reogranize the tree structure in the Xtra - could it do all the above? They never said.
In addition - are their relays to us legally binding, as only they (and tech support to some extent) know what's going on behind that blue backlit curtain in Singapore? Napster2Go said that the Touch <EM>will</EM> be N2G compatible - C<EM>reati've never did</EM>.
If they don't release a firmware update... isn't that sale under false pretense? No different than the retraction that Circuit City had to post about the Zen Micro and Audible... it would be sale under a fale pretense.
For all we know, the update could only fix the EQ settings on the Touch. They have their out. They updated the firmware as promised - end of story. Next product.
I can only hope that they wouldn't do that, as consumer research says a happy customer tells ~5 people, while an angry customer tells ~60. Creative's already lost market share to Apple... I doubt they'd want to lose more.
Admins, Moderators, people "who know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy that works for Creative," you don't know the date that it will be released - but do you know anything. I knew that project "Longhorn" was in development, and i knew what it would do, but i didn't know when it would come out.
Why can't you give us a hint as to what we'll see in the coming firmware... you don't have to tell us why it's taking so long especially if it's a hardware flaw. If all software is telling you guys is that "It'll be done soon," can you at least tell us that?
Honestly, i don't want the whole cake right now. I just want to run my finger across the icing and get a taste.
EDIT: I changed the title of the post to get attention about the Touch/Xtra Firmware, and would like to make this into sort of a petition that Creative (at a minimum) <EM><tell us what issues will be addressed in the FW updates and any additional features; and a reasonable ballpark as to when the FW should be released.</EM> "In the near future" isn't much of an answer... I'm getting engaged "in the near future."
Think about it Creative - If you told us that the Touch/Xtra would do X (e.g. N2G, or PIM), I know i could convince my friends to "Get Creative" as you so put it.Message Edited by harikari on 08-0-2005 08:23 PM

Foxystoat,As mentioned in the FAQ there is currently no announced release date for the New Zen Touch Plays for Sure firmware. As of now there has been no change. You can still count on a Plays for Sure firmware to be released for the Zen Touch/Zen Xtra.Jeremy
Actually, there was originally an announcement stating it would come out long ago (humorously, November, according to this site at microsoft). Then, another announcement that was to be by Q2 of 2005, then all we've heard since is Q2+ here on the forums. Sounds like it's getting more vague as time goes by!
Can we please at least get some word of some sort straight from the devs so we know they really exist? We really do appreciate your posts here, Jeremy, honest! But, when all you can say is basically "I don't know", there are a lot of us out here that lose faith in Creative's ability to actually create said firmware/compatibility!
Forgive me if I sound frustrated... but I am! I am getting more frustrated every day, and I've not even been waiting as long as a lot of others here! I can't imagine how anyone has managed to wait since the original announcement without jumping ship and heading to another company! I do understand that programming takes time. However, communication is the key, and all we keep hearing is "it will happen.... sometime..." All we need is some sort of communication letting us know even a hopeful target of some sort!
*pant, pant* Sorry for the complaining... having a bad day, I guess.... I could sure use more music on my Xtra to pass the time.......

I Want to Buy MacBook Pro 15" In Installments Can Anyone Here Tell me The Plans Of Installments... Please Give Me Proper Information With Interest..

    Hello,
Apple offers a Barclay's VISA card that provides 6-12 months at 0% interest on your first purchase from Apple.  You can even sign up for the card & get approved at the same time that you place your order.
If your purchase is under $999 USD you get 6 months at 0% interest.  If more than $999 you get 12 months at 0% interest.  As long as you make the minimum payment on time every month you continue at 0% until the promotional period runs out.
Note: if any payment is late or you don't pay off the balance within the promotional period, you get charged all the interest that accrued from day one; as of today that rate is over 22%, so it is important to make all your payments on time and pay off of the full balance before the end of the promotional period.
Last year I applied for the card at the same time I ordered my iMac; got approved immediately; and then set up an automatic payment every month with Barclays so I wouldn't risk being late; and then I paid off the remaining balance 30 days before the end of the promotional period.  Everything went smoothly, Barclays' online system worked perfectly; they did not play any billing tricks nor did they ever spam me with junk promotions.  Recently they offered another 12 months at 0% financing, so it's not just a one time offer!
Your profile doesn't say where you are located, so if you are outside the USA you will need to check the Apple website for your country to see if there is a similar financing offer in your location.

Please can anyone help with the continuing password rejection problem with email on my imac.My Ipad and other systems work fine but despite reloading my password on imac it bounces back.Apple store has been visited and I have tried everything they suggest.

I use free Yahoo mail webMail access because folders I created in webmail access doesn't get set up in Apple Mail. While I was searching for post about password and keychain issues, I stumbled on several threads that complain about Mail folder issues, so I'm holding off on Apple Mail.
On the password and keychain issue that your post is all about.  I've been using login keychain to save and automatical fill my login screens for a year or so successfully, with Safari and Chrome. Automatic form fill also works for Facebook login. Unfortunately, about 4 to 6 months ago, automatic password form fill stopped working with Yahoo webmail, while still worked for GMail (Safari and Chrome). I tried deleting the password entry for my two Yahoo email accounts to start fresh, but neither Safari not Chrome will even ask me if I want to save the password. I was so frustrated that I eventually installed the keypassX 0.43 (password manager) that is quite primitive sompare to OS X's keychain (when it works). Probably no surprise to you yet.
The surprise, to me at least, is that, for whatever reason, password auto form-fill from keychain started working again for Yahoo webmail login on Safari about 5-7 days ago. Still doesn't work on Chrome!
Two tips I can share, at least with webmail access:
    1. Password is save only for one of my yahoo mail accounts. When I login in with my other yahoo account, I get no prompt to save the password, and form fill doesn't work when I try to log in a second time with my other Yahoo mail account.
    2. On inspection of my login keychain, I see a webform password item saved for my Yahoo account that works with keychain. The name of the password is: login.yahoo.com(MyAccountName1#). When I open the password item and look in the Access Control tab, I see Safari and Chome are listed as allowed to access this password item..
I also an "Internet password" item with a name of just login.yahoo.com. When I open the the password item, it looks just like the password item created for MyAccountName#1, but the MyAccountName#2 is listed in the Account field. Inside the Access Control tab, no apps are listed in access permission. I added Safari and Chrome to the lists of allowed app, saved the password item.
Now when I bring up the Yahoo login page(by bookmark) on Safari, form fill fills in MyAccountname#1 for name and the proper password and I can login in. When I change the name to MyAccountName#2, the correct password is retrieved and I can log in! Alas, it still doesn't work on Chrome.
BTW, I changed the password item type from "Internet password" to "Web Form password" and saw no difference! I also edited the name to be "login.yahoo.com (MyAccountName#2)" to look like the web form password item that works, but it has no effect either.
From my experimentation, here's my observation:
    1. A Web Form password item is created for the first account name(MyAccountName#1) for login.yahoo.com and typed as Web Form password. When I log in using MyAccountName#2, an Internet Password is created, but no applications are listed as allowed to access the password item, even when the password item was created after just logged in and logged out to yahoo with the account name and password for MyAccountName#2.
    2. Manually adding Safari as an app that is allowed to use the password item works. Doesn't work with Chrome!
The version of Safari I'm using is Version 5.1.7 (6534.57.2). My installed version of Chrome is Version 21.0.1180.79 beta.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

I bought a MacBook Air and wish to communicate with old iMac G5 2003-5 (sorry can't remember the year). The screen on the iMac is blank and will not come on but the hard drive still works. Can anyone tell me the cable I need to with the iMac & how to do it. I have music and photos on the iMac I cannot access.
Also, do I need to special CD/DVD external drive/burner to import music CD's into iTunes? I have tried and it keeps coming up with formatting problems.
    Many thanks. Jax

Illustrator (CS6, Creative Cloud) crashes when I use the move tool. No help here in the forums that I can see.
As far as I'm concerned this is a ridiculous problem that is so basic - it should not happen for the price Adobe charges.
    Completely ruins workflow.
    Please help.

    Emily,
Just to make sure, are all the faces of the Verdana and Tahoma fonts installed and enabled/activated through the OS (not font mangement) as TTF (not OTF)?

    Hi,
If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD.  Download the relevant ISO from the links below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Rescue CD.  Select Boot options ( usually f9 ), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.  You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.
When loaded, select Repair Your Computer and choose the Command Prompt.  When this loads, enter the following commands and hit enter after each one - include spaces as shown.
    Bootrec.exe
    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
Remove the Rescue CD and try rebooting the notebook.
    Regards,
    DP-K
