You don't have to use threads, you don't have to do anything. Any RMI server will service multiple clients simultaneously.

anyway, so i pretty much got the banner done - but i'm stuck

following the motion guide, but when i try to select the instance
in the first frame and rotate it, shouldn't the motion tween make
it appear to slowly rotate, rather than stay put then rotate 1/4
turn at the last frame? When I select the clip and play around with
alpha and stuff, that works fine. What the heck?

this????You want to print methods? You might use Reflection for this. An Input/Output class? What is that? You want to print method signatures from a class that handles IO? Why should it matter what the class does?
I've no idea what code might be needed to do whatever it is you are wanting to do here - please clarify and see if we can get a more useful answer.

Patch editor in Environment - can anyone post a recent example?

An existing example is basically almost completely useless to you as every device has a different feature set, and a different way of accessing parameters.
Look in your manual at how to get access to your synth parameters. if it uses sysex, it should have the sysex spec documented at the back of the manual. if it uses controllers instead, then it should have the controller numbers documented.
Then simply create a new fader, and start with the first parameter you want to control, say filter cutoff. Make the fader output the correct MIDI data to change that parameter in the synth. And work your way through your parameters, adding faders, switches, knobs etc and presenting them how you want.

I have a bitmap image of a sleeping animal that I would like to add a small effect to that will make it look like it is breathing. I'm guessing this should be pretty simple with displacementmapfilter - a spherical distortion tweened over time over the animal's chest.
Any suggestions?

i don't think there's anything simple about the displacementmapfilter. i've tried to explain it before but i've never had the feeling that i was able to convey understanding.

I guess this is used in conjunction with <jbo:OnEvent list=first,next, ..... > in order to not repeating code and reuse the same portion of code in navigating actions.

From that thread's description, I think everything you are asking to do can be controlled by the TableModel itself. The data, types, etc. (that are the data that drive the table) are all defined in your table model.
Just subclass AbstractTableModel and implement the necessary methods. If while running, you change the # of columns, data types, etc. just fire the appropriate event from your TableModel fireTableStructureChanged(), etc. The columns, etc. will be rebuilt using the updated information from your table model. Not sure given your description if you will need to do any of that though. I think you can just extend the abstract table and with your own logic in getValueAt() to return the appropriate value from your data.
Note that the table expects all of the data in a column to be the same type. If your underlying data may have values in different types (classes) you will need to convert them to something generic before returning them from your model (like as a String).

You pretty much don't have to muck with the TableColumnModel stuff unless you want to do advanced/tricky things like provide a generic way to hide/show columns, etc.

The duplicate entries are removed by using FOR ALL ENTRIES. Or else by using the join, you have teh sort the table by key fields and then delete adjacent duplicates.
