Can Bi Publisher handle CLOB values?

Hello,
I've a requirement to generate a letter/report from BI Publisher(Standalone version) in which the Data Template includes a sql query to extract data from table which has clob value? Can Bi Publisher handle clob values? Please guide.
Thanks.

Can anyone please advise me if i can create a Data template with SQL query to extract the clob data from a table? and generate a report in pdf format? Am not sure if BI Publisher handles CLOB values?
My version is Oracle BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.0 (stand alone).
Please guide.
Thanks.

• Can tabular form handle CLOB?

Hey,
I just came up the next problem: I have a tabular form with one column being a textarea with type CLOB, when i try to fill in text that is over 4000 then it gives me the next error:
Error in mru internal routine: ORA-20001: Error in MRU: row= 1, ORA-20001: ORA-22835: Buffer too small for CLOB to CHAR or BLOB to RAW conversion (actual: 6556, maximum: 4000
I can't find anyone else with the same problem, Is it just me or is this not possible?
Kind regards,
Oli

Hi Nicolette,
Yes i'm creating dynamic action on page load for add row but it create only one row
In your javascript are you using a loop to run add_row as many times as needed?
Somthing like
l_no_rows = apex.item('P_YOUR_ITEM').get_value;
for (var i=0;i<l_no_rows;i++)
add_row;
Where P_YOUR_ITEM is a hidden item that holds the number of rows that need to be added.

it is possible by creating manual tabular form but it add row which are null not maps parent field reference
If your using a manual tabular form than the default values have to be set by you the moment you create the new row.
So either as parameter in apex_collection.add_member or as a value in the select statement.
Nicolette
Are you referring to apex internal add row js function? because there is nothing called add_row
it is addRow and it should be called as below in the DA:
addRow();

• How can we handle CLOB in Universe and WebIntelligence

Hi,
Could you explain how can we handle CLOB in Universe and WebIntelligence?If we use CLOB in either of this,how is the Report performance ?Is the perfomance of report degraded? Appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Swapna

Hi,
There is no way around this, long texts are big chunks of data that have to be moved from the database to the webi report.
Depending on how many rows of data you retrieve this can become a problem in various spots.
1) network traffic (lots of data to move over the network).
2) webi report memory (lots of data that needs to be stored in memory to work with the data).
So you need to limit the query in either the number of rows being retrieved,
or in the size of the data that is retrieved per row.
Depending on your use of message text, you can limit long text object to a smaller number of characters.
(Universe, Parameters, Controls...)
Depending on your version of database and BO, the default of this value is 1000 or unrestricted.
It might be that you just need an idea of the message and can limit this to 100 chars or similar, which should help performance.
It is also possible that the text is always 'long' padded with spaces, in this case it can help to trim the message column in the universe already.
Good luck,
Marianne

• Using Convert to handle NULL values for empty Strings ""

After having had the problem with null values not being returned as nulls and reading some suggestion solution I added a converter to my application.
<converter>
<converter-id>NullStringConverter</converter-id>
<converter-for-class>java.lang.String</converter-for-class>
<converter-class>com.j2anywhere.addressbookserver.web.NullStringConverter</converter-class>
</converter>
...I then implemented it as follows:
public String getAsString(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object object)
System.out.println("Converting to String : "+object);
if (object == null)
System.out.println("READING null");
return "NULL";
else
if (((String)object).equals(""))
System.out.println("READING null (Second Check)");
return null;
else
return object.toString();
public Object getAsObject(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, String value)
System.out.println("Converting to Object: "+value+"-"+value.trim().length());
if (value.trim().length()==0 || value.equals("NULL"))
System.out.println("WRITING null");
return null;
else
return value.toUpperCase();
...I can see that it is converting my values, however the object to which the inputText fields are bound are still set to empty strings ""
<h:inputText size="50" value="#{addressBookController.contactDetails.information}" converter="NullStringConverter"/>Also when reading the object values any nulls are already converted to empty strings before ariving at the converter. It seems that there is a default converter handling string values.
How can I resolve this problem as set nulls when the input value is an empty string other then checking every string in my class individually. I would really hate to pollute my object model with empty string tests.
Thanks in advance

I changed my converter as suggested :
public Object getAsObject(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, String value)
if (value == null || value.trim().length() == 0)
if (component instanceof EditableValueHolder)
System.out.println("SUBMITTED VALUE SET TO NULL");
((EditableValueHolder) component).setSubmittedValue(null);
else
System.out.println("COMPONENT :"+component.getClass().getName());
System.out.println("Converting to Object: " + value + "< to " + null);
return null;
System.out.println("Converting to Object: " + value + "< to " + value);
return value;
}which produces the following output :
SUBMITTED VALUE SET TO NULL
Converting to Object: < to null
Info : The INFO line however comes from my controller object where I print out the set value :
package com.simple;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
public class Controller
private String information;
/** Creates a new instance of Controller */
public Controller()
System.out.println("Createing Controller");
information = "Constructed";
public String process()
System.out.println("Info : "+getInformation());
return "processed";
public String reset()
setInformation("Re-Constructed");
System.out.println("Info : "+getInformation());
return "processed";
public String setNull()
setInformation(null);
System.out.println("Info : "+getInformation());
return "processed";
public String getInformation()
return information;
public void setInformation(String information)
this.information = information;

• Urgent Help - Can't publish IPA, Java crash

I need to update my app but i can't publish my ipa anymore. On smaller files it seems fine most of the time but everytime i publish i get java Platfrom SE binary has stopped working. BEX error.
I've disabled dep and that didnt work. My file is 35.2MB with ~7k library items and over 6k lines of code. Publishing worked fine a week ago, i've reinstalled java and flash professional but still nothing.
This is extremely urgent i dont know what else to do. Is there a limit on library items or code?
-Flash Professional cs6 with Air 3.4 sdk

I had 64 arrays with about 70 values each in my code...for some reason when I moved it to the end of my code it would publish, only with the final AppStore option.
Unchecking compressing the swf and actionscript warnings has helped with the publishing time.
I'm not sure why the 'quick' publishing won't work.

• Can I get handle to Database Row before an entity is deleted

Hi,
We are using stored procedure to list, insert , update and delete entity objects.To use the stored procedure I override the default queries generated by Toplink and make use of the stored procedure query.The issue here is that my Stored Procedure requires more arguments (like name of the user doing the insert) than there are fields in the entity.I need to provide these argument values to the call.For this I do something like
session.getDescriptor(MyClass.class).getEventManager().addListener(new DescriptorEventAdapter(){
public void aboutToInsert(DescriptorEvent evt) {
evt.getRow().put("USER",evt.getSession().getProperty("username"));
I set the username in the unitOfWork out of which I can grab the value in the eventHandler and put it inside the row just before insert.I do the same for modify too.But I dont see a similar methods for "delete".Do we have a aboutToDelete() method where I can get a handle to the row.The preDelete() does not provide a handle to the row.How can I insert additional arg values to the delete query?
Thanks,
Harini

Hello Harini,
Wow, you are correct there is no aboutToDelete, I guess manipulating the row before deletetion is not that common for our TopLink clients as this is the first request I have heard for it. I will add this request to our enhancement database. You might want to follow it up with support if it is a priority for you.
As a workaround you could use the preDelete event to change the stored procedure call with the user name argument (i.e. build the procedure call dynamically in preDelete and set it into the query. The query will have been cloned at this point so there should be no concurrency issues. Make sure when doing this that you do not set the deleteQuery in the descriptor query manager as this will override the original query if set.
Example:
descriptor.getEventManager().addListener(new DescriptorEventAdapter() {
public void preDelete(DescriptorEvent event) {
StoredProcedureCall call = new StoredProcedureCall();
call.setProcedureName("Delete_proc");
call.addNamedArgument("P_ID", "ID");
call.addNamedArgumentValue("USER", "scott");
call.addNamedArgumentValue("TIME", new java.util.Date());
event.getQuery().setCall(call);
});

• Can I publish keyframed parameters in an FCP generator?

Hi
I'm making an FCP generator in Motion and have a layer which moves from (0,0) to (x,y) and then goes back to (0,0).
What I would like to do is publish the (x,y) position so that I can change this in FCP. I have currently keyframed the animation with a dummy value for (x,y), but when I try to publish this it works fine in the Project Publishing pane (with values and keyframes) but when I bring it into my FCP timeline I have no keyframes and a zero value.
I can go in and manually add keyframes to my position parameter, but that rather spoils the whole benefit of doing it as a template. If the keyframes carried over it would be a start. If I could isolate the (x,y) keyframe and just allow that to be changed while maintaining the (0,0) that would be awesome.
If you cannot do this is it a bug which may at some point be fixed, or is it not meant to do this? The fact that the keyframes are there in the Project Publishing pane makes me think that they should export to FCP.
Would this work if I set up a rig? Can I specify values at certain points in time and then use a slider or similar to specify where the position value will go at my mid-keyframe? I haven't used rigs before but am happy to learn how to use them if they can do what I want.
My other thought (although I think this will become an inelegant solution) was that I could use a ramp to behaviour on x-position and one on y-position, and publish these values with ramps back to (0,0). At this point that doesn't seem too complicated, but I actually have a number of layers doing a number of things [and sometimes starting at (x,y) and moving to (0,0) and then back to (x,y)] so would have quite a lot of ramp values published which would become confusing, if this would work at all.
Perhaps I would have to use a rig to combine some of these if this is my only option?
Sorry if I'm at all vague. I know very clearly what I want to do and sometimes get befuddled explaining, but if I can publish keyframed position parameters (or preferably just the mid-point) I know that would solve it quite easily.
I'll keep experimenting and update with how I get on, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Sorry, my mistake. I forgot to mention that this is an image movement for a slideshow and will be repeated (with the variable (x,y) values) multiple times in the timeline.
Yes, if it was a single instance then keyframing in FCP would be fine. For the thirty or so occasions I will need to keyframe it makes more sense to automate if possible.
I tried rigs but the same thing happens.
Then I managed to make something work whereby I keyframed the rig to go from 0 to 100 to 0 and set the corresponding x positions as 0 and 100. Publishing this makes the layer move to (0,100) and back to (0,0) when the slider is set at 100 and lowering the slider lowers the x position reached.
This only works in one direction (can't move left and right) so isn't ideal.
Then I changed the keyframed animation to two ramps on the x position and it's actually more elegant than I thought. One ramp goes from 0 to x and stops with an end offset. Then the second ramp kicks straight in taking it from 0 to -x. Set up a rig with a slider connected to both ramps end values, one directly connected and one inversely connected. Hey presto, one slider connecting to a variable move in the x direction that also accepts negative values (I played with the max and min values of the slider).
I just need to do the same for y position. This should also work where I start at (x,y) as I will just connect to the start value and tweak the start offset to time my move.
Hope that makes sense. If anybody wants to do something similar and needs further explanation please ask. This is truly amazing. I can set up a zoom in to start and end anywhere on screen (i.e. zoom top left corner into middle of screen) and control where we zoom from within FCP... or control other parameters in a similar way.

• How can I publish the "levels" effect to final cut pro x?

Hello,
I'm trying to publish all of the color correction plugins from motion into final cut pro x, the "levels" effect in particular. I have read the instructions in the manual and published all the parameters and then saved it to send it over to final cut pro x but the problem that I'm having is when I open it up in final cut pro x all the parameters are there except for the histogram and its controls, what am I doing wrong and how can I fix it? Thanks.

The short answer is you can't publish the levels graphic UI (you can, but it doesn't work in FCPX - all you get is the collection of the individual slider controls.)
You can create a shape with a gradient fill. Set a middle color tab and a second opacity tab. You can use Link parameter behaviors from the color/opacity tabs to the the filter > Levels parameter controls. Use the color tabs for Black In, Gamma and White In. Use the Opacity tabs for Black Out and White Out.
You can publish the shape's gradient.
The problem is, to publish this UI, you're publishing an actual gradient and people will be able to make alterations to the gradient (it won't change how it operates the levels controls.) The other problem with it is that it is possible for users to accidentally pull off or add new tabs which will immediately break the effect (and immediate "undo" should repair it though). Then, figuring out how to manipulate the Gamma control is going to be a trick (I haven't figured out yet.) The values go from 5 (all the way left) to 0 (all the way right - with 1 the 50% mark) for the Gamma control itself, but the UI controller (the middle tab on the gradient) moves the control in the opposite direction and the values are logarithmic in scale. You can use the mid-tab control on the gradient linked to the gamma parameter value, but it won't behave the same way as you would expect a genuine levels control to behave (left to right goes from black to white when the expectation would be the opposite.)
A gradient with links into the filter is about the only way to go if you want it give it a shot.

• How does IDP handle multi-value attributes in directory?

I have a directory referenced by the IDP where the mail attribute is multi-value. Assertions being received by the SP are indicating that the mail attribute is null or empty. How does the Oracle IDP handle multi-value attributes from a directory? Is there a way to select the first entry in an array of multi-values?

On the IdP side, passing of multi-valued attributes is supported. Read this section:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10773_01/doc/oim.1014/b25355/configuring.htm#BCGCGFCJ
Snippet (under 'Delimited Data'):
"In addition to supporting and passing multi-valued attributes, Oracle Identity Federation can also support delimited data to provide multiple values for assertion attributes ......"
This information is also available on the OIF screen for 'Add Assertion Profile'.
On the SP side, mapping a multi-valued assertion attribute to a local user attribute is NOT supported. Read this section:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10773_01/doc/oim.1014/b25355/configuring.htm#BCGGEAEA

"Note: Mapping an assertion attribute containing multiple values to a local user is not supported."
So, basically, there is no way to send only the first value of an LDAP attribute.

• Model of how APEX handles data (values)?

Reference {thread:id=2486655}
I'm trying to get a model of how APEX handles data (values). There are several places(?) that data (values) can exist. Or so it seems. I'm trying to understand how these work -- to put all the pieces together.
Question:
A) Where data can be?
1) In the database
2) In the session
3) Rendered -- and hence displayed on the screen, if a displayed value -- but not in the session
4) In perhaps(?) some working memory pool(?) but different from the page rendered values I see on the screen?
5) Other?
Why do I think this is relevant?
Question:
B) If there are rendered values and session values different from the rendered values, then when code executes, which of these values (rendered or session) is it executing against?
And maybe the answer is, "You don't understand what's going on." Yes, "Exactly!" Hence the question.
Best wishes,
Howard

I'm putting this together now. For example:
I set the value of a Page Item (say, :P2_DATA) to "BEFORE" in a Before Region process and change it to "AFTER" in an After Region Process. 'BEFORE' was displayed on the screen but 'AFTER' was in the session state. So I see that PL/SQL changes these values in the session state. But it doesn't "go back" to change the HTML after the region has been rendered -- hence we see BEFORE shown on the screen. (I'll have to think about what a Dynamic Action does.)
Also, if a page item has a default value, say 'DEFAULT' then that value doesn't get into the session state. At least, not with my current settings. Oh, that explains a lot of confusion!! I suppose there's a logical reason for this but who would expect default values to be differently from other PL/SQL operations on the item?
Questions:
1) So why does a default value not get put into the session state?Several reasons, among them:
*1. When/why is the value required?* Region items (and thus their source and default values) are rendered in region/item sequence order. The item's source/default value would therefore not be available in session state until it's rendering point. This is frequently later in page show processing than the value is actually required, such as the common use case of including a data value in the page or region title. Setting the value in a Before Header/Regions computation or process makes it available as required before the item is actually rendered.
*2. The rendered page might not be submitted.* Default values are typically set when a page will create a new row. Consider the situation where the user clicks a "Create" button and is presented with an order entry form containing several default values. They then decide they don't want to create a new order after all, and navigate away from the form page via some mechanism that uses a redirect rather than a submit (such as a default "Cancel" button). This means that no page submit processing is performed, and generally that no session state management is performed. If the default values were set in session state, the order entry page would contain the default values for the non-existent order despite the user never submitting it. This may have unwanted side-effects if these values are referenced elsewhere in the application, and therefore would require extra session state management to be built into the application.
*3. A rendered item might not be submitted with the page.* Per the HTML specification, the values of disabled controls unchecked checkboxes are not POSTed on page submit. Consider a situation where a checkbox item is set with several default values, but the application requires that the checkboxes be cleared and disabled by a dynamic action if the user chooses certain options from a select list. In this case, on page submission no values are submitted into session state for the checkbox item. If the defaults had been set in session state, then the application would be in an inconsistent state, with the user-selected option indicating that none of the checkboxes were checked, but with session state holding values showing that they were. This would require additional processing to ensure that the application's state was consistent before saving it to the database.1
2 & 3 are particularly significant in basic wizard-generated applications. Doing things in this way, the wizard-generated DML and navigation "just works", without the need for additional session state management.
2) Is there a Page Item setting that causes the default value to be saved to the session state?No. Hopefully the explanations above provide sufficient reason to show why this is genearlly not desirable. On the rare occasions when it is required, set the session state value using a computation or process.
1 There are other reasons—mainly security related—that make it good practice to perform such checks in more complex and internet-facing applications anyway.

• DB: How to handle the value results.GetString("NAME")

Hello.
I'm trying to handle the value of a field from my DataBase:

String Name = results.GetString("NAME");

I'm able to display the value of 'myName' (Tom), but if try:

There is no response.
Does anybody have any experience?
Thank you.

hey,
String myName = results.getString("NAME");
then u can use
if(myName.equals('Tom'){
}else
The above condition will be true if myName has Tom in it.. it has to be T o m . even if it is TOM or tOm or some other case it will never match.. if u are not bothered about the case then
use
if(myName.equalsIgnoreCase('Tom'){
}else
which will ignore case .
hope this will help u ....

• When i add menu bar in my user interface gives me error that this handle is not a panel handle(return value -42)

i have 3 panels in my application and parent panel is displayed first then i display other two panels which come to the front then on entering correct password i discard the child panel and then you can see parent panel , but there is an issue when i add menu to my parent panel i dont know whats wrong when i add menu bar in my user interface (parent panel) gives me error that this handle is not a panel handle(return value -42) for a child panel. when i dont open and display child panel then its fine , and even without menu added to my parent panel all my panels and my application works perfactly

Hello smartprogrammer,
some more informations are needed in order to properlu help you in this situation:
- Are you adding menus dynamically at runtime or in the UIR editor? If dynamically: how are you loading the menu bar?
- Are you dynamically tailoring the menu bar at runtime (adding or deleting menu items, dimming / undimming some of them or checking / unchecking)?
- Can you post the code where you are getting the error, documenting variables and scope (local to the function, global to the source file, global to the project)?
You can look at uirview.prj example that ships with CVI for an example of LoadMenuBar (the exampl eis in <CVI samples>\userint folder): in that project, the menu bar is shown as a context menu when you right-click on a tree element (see DeferredMenuCB callback).
