Can class loading be affected by concurrency ?

I remember having read that class loading is guaranteed to happen on a single thread, ie. that static initializer blocks do not need to worry about being invoked concurrently.
I can't find any longer the source that stated that; so is anyone able to tell me if that's true (and point me to a resource about that) ?
I could find that java.lang.ClassLoader
defines a :
protected synchronized Class loadClass(String name, boolean resolve)
but I imagine a case where a classloader overrides that method without keeping the synchronization AND a class to be loaded is referenced from many parts of a multithreaded system, so it may happen that multiple thread attempt to load it.
is this a real scenario ?
TIA,
Edo

Hello,
Based on the JVM specifications, when a class or interface is initialized (execution of the static initializers) the "Java Virtual Machine is responsible for taking care of synchronization". The very first step of the procedure for initializing a class or interface is to "synchronize on the Class object that represents the class or interface to be initialized".
Now, the questions are:
How to interpret the specifications? Are the JVM implementations compliant?
Personally, when I write some static initializer blocks, I do NOT worry about multi-threading issues. But I may be wrong.
For instance, I write:
class Singleton {
  private static Singleton SINGLETON = new Singleton();
  public Singleton getInstance() { return SINGLETON };
}and not:
class Singleton {
  private static Singleton SINGLETON;
  static {
    synchronized(Singleton.class) {
      SINGLETON = new Singleton();
  public Singleton getInstance() { return SINGLETON };
}I hope it helps.

  • How can I make server use single class loader for several applications

    I have several web/ejb applications. These applications use some common libraries and should share instances of classes from those libraries.
    But applications are being deployed independently thus packaging all them to EAR is not acceptable.
    I suppose the problem is that each application uses separate class loader.
    How can I make AS use single class loader for a set of applications?
    Different applications depend on different libraries so I need a way that will not share library for all applications on the domain but only for some exact applications.
    When I placed common jar to *%domain%/lib* - all works. But that jar is shared between all applications on the domain.
    When I tried to place common jar to *%domain%/lib/applibs* and specified --libraries* attribute on deploying I got exception
    java.lang.ClassCastException: a.FirstDao cannot be cast to a.FirstDaoHere http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E19879-01/820-4336/6nfqd2b1t/index.html I read:
    If multiple applications or modules refer to the same libraries, classes in those libraries are automatically shared.
    This can reduce the memory footprint and allow sharing of static information.Does it mean that classes should be able to be casted ?

    You didn't specify which version of the application server you are using, but the config is similar as long as you know what to look for. Basically, you need to change the classloader delegation. Here's how it is done in 8.2

  • How can I get a dynamic list of Classes Loaded

    I assume this may need to use some sort of reflection. Does
    anyone have code or ideas where I can:
    a) I can get a list of all Classes loaded and their
    properties. This would probably be all instances of Class
    b) A list of all
    global instance variables. (This may not even be possible. I
    know it can be done in other languages)
    I assume this may need to use some sort of reflection.

  • Can i load a class in subdirectoy  inside a jar file using applet tag?

    hi every one.. thank you for reading ... i am really in dire need for the solution..
    my problem is that i have a jar file contianing a package which inturn contains my applet class...
    i am trying to access this applet class using a applet tag in html file. this html file is in same directory as the jar file. i am having no problems in windows but when i am doing this in linux apache server i was getting class not found exception. (already checked the file permissions). and when i am successful when using simple package directory instead of jar file . so gist of my quesition is "can i load a class in subdirectoy inside a jar file using applet tag in a html file"?

    When you tested in Windows were you using Internet Explorer? On Linux you will be using a different browser, usually Mozilla of some version, or Firefox. Note that the HTML tags for applets will be different between the browsers if you are using the object tag. Principally the classid value for the object tag will differ between Firefox and Internet Explorer.

  • Can't load class 'mx.transitions.BroadcasterMX'

    I have a flash piece that I programmed last year in CS4 and now I had to change a little bit of the content, nothing code related, just modify an image. Now I'm using CS5 but when I try to publish the movie, I get an error: Can't load class or interface 'mx.transitions.BroadcasterMX' (I'm translating fom spanish)
    I have reduced the fla to the minimal expression. just a frame with the following AS:
    import mx.transitions.Tween;
    import mx.transitions.easing.*;
    new Tween(MCcore, "_y", None.easeNone, MCcore._y, 0, 2, true);
    stop();
    Where MCcore is just a square in the bottom of the screen that should move to the top.
    I've checked that BroadcasterMX is in the correct path of the hard drive and is not corrupted.
    I've tried with several publishing options from flash player 6 to flash player 10 but always the same error.
    As I said, the movie compiled correctly in CS4. What is going wrong?

    As I said, this movie was compiling correctly in Flash CS4 using ActionScript 2
    BroadcasterMX.as is called from Tween.as. If you have Flash installed in your machine you can go to your user files path and then to Adobe\Flash CS5\es_ES\Configuration\Classes\mx\transitions and you will find it there (maybe you have to replace es_ES by en_US or whatever your install language is)
    any other more helpful answer?
    Anyhow, I would be insterested in any other code that moves the clip from the bottom of the screen where it is to the top in two seconds while the rest of the movie keeps running. (the original code did more things and also moved the clip in the x coordinates and changed size and opacity, so there were 4 tweens and several other objects that also Tweened in and by the stage)

  • Can't load class problems migrating from PE 8.1 to PE 8.2

    Hi. I'm in the process of migrating an application from an old server that runs PE 8.1_02 to a new server that runs PE 8.2.
    The application is coded and built in Creator 2.0; the resulting .war file deploys alright into both servers, and operates correctly on the 8.1 server, but throws various "Can't load class" errors on my 8.2 server. One of them looks like this:

    The class that is "missing" (TextBoxField) is very definitely there in the usual place under WEB-INF/classes. I can't figure out why it can't be loaded. The weird part is that a lot of the code still works, but these errrors have broken many of the major functions of our software.
    On a hunch I realized that perhaps Creator 2.0 was using some 8.1 specific libraries to build, so I replaced the following libraries with versions found in my appserv tree:
    activation.jar
    appserv-jstl.jar
    appserv-tags.jar
    commons-logging.jar
    j2ee.jar
    jax-qname.jar
    jaxr-api.jar
    jaxr-impl.jar
    jaxrpc-api.jar
    jaxrpc-impl.jar
    jsf-api.jar
    jsf-impl.jar
    mail.jar
    saaj-api.jar
    saaj-impl.jar
    Rebuilding with those copied libraries made no difference.
    Anyone know what could be causing this? Is there a workaround or fix? Do I need to update Creator with something? Should I revert to 8.1? Should I try moving to 9.0?

    I solve this problem by doing a remote deployment via creator2 remote deployment server.. first you must take care of JNDI stuff..
    I hope this help.. give me feedback

  • Javax.faces.FacesException: Missing Class: Can't load class

    Hi,
    I want to implement in process wizard using JSF. I have created a button panel which have "Back", "Next","Finish","Cancel" and "Help" button and also have create a process indicator which indicate the current page by highlighting.
    Both Buttonbar class and ProcessBar are interacting with a Model.
    I have declared a static variable to indicate the current page no, default value is zero. This static variable is getting updated by "Back" (-1) and "Next"(+1) button action.
    For the first time wizardPage is loaded fine but in pressijng of "Next" button, it throws me
    javax.faces.FacesException: Missing Class: Can't load class
    'com.cassiopae.framework.demo.faces.uicomponent.WizardProcessTrain'
    But WizardProcessTrain class and WizardButtonBar class are loading properly when screen is loading.
    Any one know the reason, please help me out.
    Thanks in advance.

    I solve this problem by doing a remote deployment via creator2 remote deployment server.. first you must take care of JNDI stuff..
    I hope this help.. give me feedback

  • Can't load JavaMail classes

    Hi,
    I'm new to Aurora and having trouble getting a set of source files (javamail 1.1.3) to load into jserver properly.
    I'm not sure if i should load the mail.jar into Oracle using loadjava first, or simply set the classpath to point to mail.jar?
    I tried it both ways
    When I try to load the mail.jar file using loadjava the javax package fails to load because of a 'privilege error' yet the com packages load ok.
    When I try to load my own class with the mail.jar file in the classpath on a client, it can't find several of the classes needed in the mail.jar archive....
    Does the classpath need to be set on the server for mail.jar, or can i load them using loadljava. Not sure what to do...
    Thanks,
    Bill Wheeler

    Ken,
    I tried extracting and re-jarring the javamail source files without compression.
    Here is what i get when trying to load them using loadjava as 'system':
    identical: com/sun/mail/handlers/text_html is unchanged from previously loaded file
    identical: com/sun/mail/handlers/multipart_mixed is unchanged from previously loaded file
    identical: com/sun/mail/smtp/SMTPOutputStream is unchanged from previously loaded file
    loading : javax/mail/event/StoreEvent
    creating : javax/mail/event/StoreEvent
    Error while creating class javax/mail/event/StoreEvent
    ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    Any idea why the com package is loading successfully and the javax is not?
    Thanks,
    Bill Wheeler

  • Can I dinamicly load a class with custom class loader ?

    Can I dinamicly load a class with custom class loader ?

    Hi,
    I was wondering if you found answer to your question, and also were you using your custom class loader inside a signed applet as I am in a similar situation, and was wondering if you could help me. An example would be great...
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards.

  • Order of class loading in a Web Application

    Hi,
    I have been trying to find out if there is a defined order in which classes contained in WEB-INF/classes
    and/or WEB-INF/lib should be loaded.
    There doesn't appear to be any mention of class loading order in either the J2EE 1.3 or J2EE 1.4
    specifications. That does not mean that there isn't a defined class load order, it just means I haven't found one.
    Typical behaviour from servers such as Tomcat (reference implementation of the Servlet Engine) show
    that classes in WEB-INF/classes are loaded before classes contained in jars under WEB-INF/lib.
    Because there doesn't appear to be a mandated class load order I cannot assume that the same
    behaviour holds for all servers, unless someone here knows better of course.
    The reason for the question is that relying on the exhibited class load order means we can patch web applications by simply putting the patch under the WEB-INF/classes directory.
    If this should not be relied upon then patches will have to be applied directly to the affected jar files,
    this is not a problem in itself however it is nice to be able to keep the patches out of the jars for
    ease of rolling back patches without having to copy jar files all over the place.
    Any insights would be welcome.
    Thanks

    If you say that it is server specific i don't find
    that to be the correct answer b'cozI didn't give an answer, I am looking for one. I gave an example of the behaviour that Tomcat 4.1.x
    exhibits, one that we currently make use of for patching web applications. My question was about
    whether or not this behaviour can be relied upon.
    the class files are depended on the jar files which
    need to checked in first before getting loaded b'coz
    it should check for dependent files before only while
    getting deployed.This is why the class load order is important.
    Is the Web Application Classloader going to look in WEB-INF/classes first every time followed
    by WEB-INF/lib everytime, is the order undefined, or is it reversed?
    More over if you just think of class loading mechanism
    of classes folder only then it is loaded in the order
    specified in the web.xml file.
    in this we specify the order of loading.As far as I know web.xml does not allow you to specify where classes should be loaded from and in
    which classpath order, you define which classes should be used for application components.
    The only load order you can specify is the load order of servlets on startup.
    If you know different I would love to know how you would configure web.xml to specify the classpath order
    in which classes are loaded.

  • How to load a class dynamically in the current/system class loader

    I need to dynamically load a new jdbc driver jar to the current/system class loader... Please note that creating a new classloader will not help since the DriverManager refers to the systemclassloader itself.
    Restarting the application by appending the jar to its classpath will solve the problem but I want to avoid doing this.

    Did you then create a ClassLoader to load the JDBC
    driver and then install it into the system as
    directed by the JDBC specification (ie
    Class.forName(someClassName))?
    And then try to use it from a class loaded fromsome
    other ClassLoader (i.e. the system class loader)?
    If you did not try this please explain why not.O.K. I just looked at the source to
    java.sql.DriverManager. I did not know what I was
    talking about, as what I suggested above will not
    work.
    This is my new Idea:
    Create a URLClassLoader to load the JDBC driver also
    in this ClassLoader you need to place a helper class
    that does the following:
    public class Helper {
    public Driver getJDBCDriver(String driverClassName,
    String url) {
    try {
    Class.forName(driverClassName);
    Driver d = DriverManager.getDriver(url);
    return d;
    catch(Exception ex) {
    ex.printStackTrace();
    return null;
    }Now create an instance of the Helper class in the new
    ClassLoader, and call its getJDBCDriver method to get
    an instance of the driver (you will probably have to
    create an interface in the root class loader that the
    Helper implements so that you can easily call it).
    Now from the root classloader you can make calls
    directly to the returned Driver and bypass the
    DriverManager and its restrictions on cross
    ClassLoader access.
    The only catch here is that you would have to call to
    the returned Driver directly and not use the Driver
    Manager.This sounds like will work but I did not want to load DriverManager in a new classloader.. I did a hack
    I unzip the jar dynamically in a previously known location (which I included in my classpath when launching the app). The classLoader finds the class now though it did not exist when the app was launched !
    A hack of-course but works eh ..

  • Error building project using kXML2 - "Class loading error: Wrong name"

    Hi,
    I'm testing the XML-Parser KXML2 and downloaded the latest package, but the minimal version (kxml2-min.zip). I put this file into the directory "%j2mewtk%\apps\KxmlTest\lib" and wrote the lines
    import org.kxml2.io.*;
    import org.xmlpull.v1.*;
    When I try to build the project with the Wireless Toolkit (v1.04) it spits out the following error:
    Error preverifying class kxml2.io.KXmlParser
    Class loading error: Wrong name
    com.sun.kvem.ktools.ExecutionException: Preverifier returned 1
    Build failed
    I also tried the full package "kxml2.zip" but the same error occurs.
    How can I get rid of this? Thanks in advance!

    Okay, finally worked it out (hopefully). I unpacked the archive to a directory (say "%J2MEWTK%\apps\KxmlTest\tmpclasses") and then preverified them "manually":
    %J2SDK%\bin\preverify.exe -classpath "%J2MEWTK%\apps\KxmlTest\tmpclasses";"%J2MEWTK%\lib\midpapi.zip" org.kxml2.io.KXmlParser
    %J2SDK%\bin\preverify.exe -classpath "%J2MEWTK%\apps\KxmlTest\tmpclasses";"%J2MEWTK%\lib\midpapi.zip" org.xmlpull.v1.XmlPullParser
    %J2SDK%\bin\preverify.exe -classpath "%J2MEWTK%\apps\KxmlTest\tmpclasses";"%J2MEWTK%\lib\midpapi.zip" org.xmlpull.v1.XmlPullParserException
    Then I packed them again to a jar-file:
    %J2SDK%\bin\jar.exe -cvf kxml2-min.jar %J2MEWTK%\apps\KxmlTest\tmpclasses\output\.
    That was all!

  • I am running 10.5.8, and just updated my java to java 5 update10. Now my firefox is missing the Java plugin, and I can't load any Java applet at all. When I try it with Safari, it hangs when certain Java applet loads. HELP!!!

    Suddenly my Java plugin is missing and i can't load any Java with Firefox at all, even though i have it enabled in the browser! i've tried loading in java embedding plugin, but it doesn't work. what should i do???

    It's not in Tools> Add-ons >plugins?  Should be Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers 13.5.0. What are you seeing there? I don't think it's called the embedding plugin any longer.
    Might try getting the Firefox 5 standalone application. Trash the current one and replace it. Doing this won't affect your Profile or any settings.

    If it's enabled, how can it be missing?
    If this doesn't work, ask here. No need to register. Make sure you put (Mac) in the title.

    EDIT. Oops, may be different for 10.5.8. Was thinking recent Java update for 10.6. But try installing a new app anyway. In the past, this got me the latest Java plugin.
