Can Excel files be opened by Numbers '08?

I have been trying to open an Excel spreadsheet in Numbers 'O8 with no success so far. All of the suggestions I've found on Apple Support Communities haven't worked.
Every time I try something, I'm faced with the notification that the file is "encrypted."
Any suggestions?

Could the document be password-protected? Numbers cannot open password-protected Excel files, NeoOffice can.

    I have just downloaded the latest "Office" update, and now my xls files only open in "Numbers". Can this be fixed?

    You can try right clicking on one of your xls files select get info then select open with, select other then choose office excel and check the box to say always open this file type.
    Hope this helps

  • My mac is converting Word and Excel files into Pages and Numbers files when I click to open them (or download and open them) from an email. I do I get this to stop? It's really aggravating.

    My mac is converting Word and Excel files into Pages and Numbers files when I click to open them from an email. Downloading them and opening them doesn't help. How do I make this stop? I don't use iLife and don't want to; my clients are using Office and it's easier for me, except when I have to copy and paste everything they send me from an iLife file back to Word and Excel. Help!!! It's like Apple has become Microsoft, forcing us to use their apps.

    Do you have Word & Excel installed, if yes, navigate in the finder to an example of each, right click and select 'Get Info' scroll down to 'Open With' and select the appropriate program, check the box that says 'Change All'

    How can I uninstall Numbers?  I've never used the Numbers application before, and suddenly all my saved Excel Worksheets are opening as Numbers documents, even though they continue to be identified as Excel documents?  I'm losing years of work.

    Right click on a Excel Worksheet file, choose 'Get Info'. In the small window that opens change the 'Open with:' from Numbers to Excel. Click on 'Change All…'

    Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
    Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
    If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
    It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
    If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
    In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
    Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
    The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • VB Script That Detects if A Specific Excel File is Open

    Hi Guys,
    I'm trying to move away from Task Scheduler as my trigger for opening an Excel file. The problem there is it has a minimum of 5 min interval (I need at least 30 sec) and If the process of the initial instance of the Excel file is longer than the usual that
    after 5 min another instance executes it messes up my memory bandwidth. What I want is to use VB Script that first check if a particular Excel file is open if yes then wait for another 30 sec to check.
    Question: What is the right syntax/code for detecting a specific Excel file and loops every 30 sec. But I also want to be able to end the loop if I want to.
    Here is my current code:
    Gateway Timeout
    RequestURI=http://timeentry/
    Set Recordset = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
    ConnString = "DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver}; SERVER=PHMNWWKS027604; DATABASE=db_skusetup; " &_
    "UID=root;PASSWORD=; OPTION=3"
    'Check for Export Query'
    Recordset.ActiveConnection = ConnString
    exportSQL = "SELECT * FROM tb_queue_export WHERE request_status = 'Pending' ORDER BY request_id DESC LIMIT 1"
    Recordset.Open exportSQL
    Set objExcelExtract = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
    Set objWorkbookExtract = objExcelExtract.Workbooks.Open("C:\Users\ushuam00\Desktop\LAPTOP.xlsx")
    If objWorkbookExtract.ReadOnly then
    if Recordset.Fields(3) <> "" then
    end if
    end if
    test= MsgBox(Recordset.Fields(3),3,Recordset.EOF)
    Recordset.Close
    ReadOnly is not doing it for me.

    The only way to test it is to open it. Just open writable and, if the file is open you open with fail  then loop and try again until you can open it.  Once open just execute your macro.
    This can loop until you can open the file.
    Set xl = CreateObject("Excel.Application")
    Do While True
    Set wb = xl.WorkBooks.Open("C:\scripts\test.xlsx")
    If wb.ReadOnly Then
    MsgBox "readonly"
    wb.Close()
    Else
    MsgBox "OK"
    Exit Do
    End If
    WScript.Sleep 5000
    Loop
    xl.Quit
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Excel opens when i command a .csv file to open with numbers. How can i get numbers to be my default application?

    I am sharing a Macbook Pro with my girlfriend. She runs Microsoft Office Excel for her work and I perfer Numbers in my work. Logged into my user account, I command an email attachment (.csv) to open with numbers. Excel launches every time. I can open numbers first. Excel still launches and opens the .csv document. i tried to trash the excel in my user account, no go. any suggestions?

    Hi joric,
    In Finder, right click or control click on the document and Open With > Numbers.  You may have to navigate from Other...
    Or, a permanent solution:
    In Finder, click once on a .csv document to select it. Get Info (command i) Towards the bottom of that info window, is Open With. It probably shows Excel. Change it to Numbers. Again, you may have to navigate from Other... Then click on Change All.
    I can open numbers first. Excel still launches and opens the .csv document.
    Are you opening from within Numbers (File > Open)?
    Regards,
    Ian.

    Has any one had problems opening a pdf file or excel file in the ISO5 platform, if so how did you fix it

    I use PDF File Viewer, a free app.
    I would download Keynote, Numbers and/or Pages for iOS; they are quality apps made by Apple. You can create, edit and view documents, but these apps are $9.99 each, on the other hand they are of the upmost quality.

  • Multiple displays - how to choose which an Excel file will open in?

    I have two displays hooked up to my Mac Mini (extended desktop).  Each time I open an Excel spreadsheet it always open in the display with the menu bar, despite me moving and re-saving while it's in the second display.
    Q. How can I get Excel spreadsheets to always open in the larger, second display?
    I suspect it is a question of dragging the files window into the second display while either "cntrl" or "command" key pressed, but I haven't had any luck with that.
    Mac Mini running 10.6.8
    Dell 23" display (Apple menu bar appears here and where files always appear when opened)
    Apple 30" Cinema Display (secondary monitor where I want the Excel files to appear when opened)
    Thanks for the help-

I need to consult a DB Table and add data in an specific column into the excel file, however I don't get where do I have to put the code from point 1 into the point 2 which must be in an oracle procedure. I should be able to write in any cell I want! And the file is not into the DB server, is in the developers PC instead.

  • Passing a parameter to an Excel file when opening it

    I would like to know if it is possible to pass a parameter to an Excel file when calling that file from within another Excel file using VBA. I am using the 2007 version. An example of what I would like to do is what we use to do with DOS programs and command
    line parameters. I would like to have the Excel file I just opened do something depending on the parameter passed to it and then close.
    Might be an easy question but I'm stumped. Any ideas?

    Step.1 Create a macro-enabled workbook
    Step.2 Open the workbook, and open the VBA, insert a moudle, copy and paste the following code sample in the module
    Option Base 0
    Option Explicit
    Declare Function GetCommandLine Lib "kernel32" Alias "GetCommandLineW" () As Long
    Declare Function lstrlenW Lib "kernel32" (ByVal lpString As Long) As Long
    Declare Sub CopyMemory Lib "kernel32" Alias "RtlMoveMemory" (MyDest As Any, MySource As Any, ByVal MySize As Long)
    Function CmdToSTr(Cmd As Long) As String
    Dim Buffer() As Byte
    Dim StrLen As Long
    If Cmd Then
    StrLen = lstrlenW(Cmd) * 2
    If StrLen Then
    ReDim Buffer(0 To (StrLen - 1)) As Byte
    CopyMemory Buffer(0), ByVal Cmd, StrLen
    CmdToSTr = Buffer
    End If
    End If
    End Function
    Step.4 Copy and paste the following code sample into ThisWorkbook
    Private Sub Workbook_Open()
    Dim CmdRaw As Long
    Dim CmdLine As String
    Dim myParam As String
    CmdRaw = GetCommandLine
    CmdLine = CmdToSTr(CmdRaw)
    myParam = Right(CmdLine, 6)
    MsgBox myParam
    End Sub
    Step.4 Sign your code or modify the macro security settings to allow the macro to run automatically
    Step.5 Save and close the workbook
    Step.6 Run command line with the parameter, for example:
    Excel "Server\ShareFolder\TheWorkbook.xlsm" /e/myParam
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The code sample above will pass the last 6 characters (modify the code if you need more or less) to the workbook
    The workbook will display a message box to display the parameter we passed from the command line, add the other function as you need
    The code sample refers to the reply from Air_Cooled_Nut in
  • Excel File not opening
    Hi There,
    I am trying to open an excel file using a click box. I have
    been able to open a .PDF as well as other files on other websites
    with no problem.
    I am using a click box, where On Success it is suppose to
    open a file or URL. Then I put in the path to the excel file. The
    excel file is on a website and the path is something like:
    http://www.samplesite.com/testfile.xls
    But when I run it through the website, I get a new window
    with the path to the file in the address box. Within the body of
    the window it says that the file could not be opened. BUT if I hit
    return in the address field, it will bring up the file.
    I was wondering if it had something to do with the fact that
    whenever a file like is opened MS asks you whether you want to open
    or save the file first. I have tried making it read-only, but no
    luck.
    If the path points to my C: drive and I preview the movie it
    works. It asks if I would like to open the file and then it opens
    it when I respond.
    This should have taken 5 minutes, but I have been at it for 3
    hours. Please help!
    Unless you have CrossOver Mac installed or it is a self-expanding zip file, you need Windows to open exe files.
