Can I apply a transition across two clips in different video tracks?

In reading the manual, I see that I can butt two video clips up against each other in a single video track, overlap them and apply a transition.
However, I'm accustomed to (in audio editing software) making transitions across two clips that are in two separate video tracks.
I would like to be able to fade in and out, back and forth across two video tracks. Is that possible?
Please direct me to resources already documented and I will go read further. Maybe there are online resources, other posts, etc.
Thanks

Most transitions will work if the clip is overlapped on another track. Just apply the transition to the edit point. Some, like the 3D simulation transitions, will not work properly like this.
It would really be better if you learned how to use this application the way it was designed to be used rather than the way you used some other application.

  • Apply the same LCR two times on different tables

    Hi all
    Just one question:
Can I apply the same LCR two times on different tables using only one apply queue?
For example executing two times LCR.EXECUTE(TRUE) in a procedure handler:
    LCR.EXECUTE(TRUE);
    LCR.EXECUTE(TRUE);
    ....

    Topas,
You need to create new LCR and execute both LCRs.

  • Applying a transition to multiple clips, titles, and stills

    Hello,
I'm banging my head against the wall trying to achieve something that seems like it should be fairly simple.
I'm producing guitar instruction videos that often use still images, five or more title clips (for text highlighting concepts presented in the video), and generator clips (used for masking).  All of this is layered over the primary shot of me talking to/playing for the camera.
I'm looking into using a simple transition like "Slide" between chapters/sections of the video to prevent jump cuts.  My goal is to include all clips in the transition: That is, if I only apply Slide to the two clips in the storyline, the other clips connected to the later clip in the storyline--titles, still images, etc.--remain stationary, which looks wierd.  I want the whole enchilada--everything visible, still images and titles included--to slide over in unison.  And I want to be able to do this 5-10 times over the course of a 5-minute video, and I'll be producing 20-50 videos.  So I need an efficient workflow.
A simple example would be the edit at 1:47 in this video I producted:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Yvef14A00
I'd like to apply a slide transition so that not only the image of my holding my guitar, but also the title "Stage 2", slid over the preceding footage.
And more importantly, what if, in addition to the text "Stage 2," there was a still image and several other titles?  How would I get all of them to slide over together?
Storylines don't seem to be the answer--You'd have to create a different one for each additional clip, which seems cumbersome.  And compound clips and transitions don't seem to mix well--when I try to transition between compound clips I'm told there isn't enough extra media to create the transition.
    Thanks so much,
    Rob

Thank you Jakob, this will make things quicker once I know how to apply the transition.
But it doesn't answer my primary question: How to apply the transition.
Maybe some screenshots would illustrate the problem:
    Image 1
    www.heartwoodguitar.com/temp-imgs/1.png
Here the playhead is just before an edit point between two sections: The Guitar Strap section and the Capo section.  Right now, a single still image is visible (dude with a chain for a guitar strap).
    Image 2
    www.heartwoodguitar.com/temp-imgs/2.png
Here the playhead is at the edit point where I want to apply a Slide transition.  As you can see, in addition to the clip in the storyline (video of me holding my guitar), there are four title clips and two generator clips.  I'd like all seven of those clips to slide across the still image of the dude with the chain guitar strap.
    Does that make things clearer?

  • Can't apply audio transitions over some sequence joins

I have a rough cut sequence I'm putting together and am trying to apply a cross fade over 2 sequences. For some reason I can't apply the transition over the splice area...it will go to one seq or the other (icon is |= ) other parts work fine (icon is =|= )
    There are 6 seq's in this cut 4 transitions work as I expect...2 don't
any ideas what I'm doing wrong???

For every clip you put on the timeline there is a clip in and clip out.  The clip also has two physical ends of the media file.
If the clip out of the outgoing clip is the same as the end of the media file, OR, the clip in of the incoming clip is the same as the start of the media file, you cannot place a transition--there must be overlap for most transitions.
Go to the junction between the two clips you are trying to place a transition:
Using the trim tool, drag the clip out of the outgoing clip back an amount equal to 50% of the transition duration
Using the trim tool, drag the clip in of the incoming clip forward an amount equal to 50% of the transition duration
If this created a gap between the two clips, do a ripple delete of the gap.
By dragging the clip in and clip out with the trim tool, you moved them away from the physical ends of the media file  you now have what Harm refers to a handles.  You can now place your transition.
As Harm said: "Read the manual," and everything will be made known to you.

  • When applying a transition between particular clips it only applies to the end of the previous clip and will neither 'Center on Edit' nor 'Start on Edit'. I'm kind new to FCE 4 so please excuse my inexperience.

When applying a transition between particular clips it only applies to the end of the previous clip and will neither 'Center on Edit' nor 'Start on Edit'. I'm kind new to FCE 4 so please excuse my inexperience.

This indicates that you only have handles available on one side of the edit point. If the transition ends on the edit, that means that the next shop begins on the first frame of the media file and there is no room for it to extend and create the necessary overlap.

  • I can not copy a transition between multiple clips in premiere 12

Following the procedure described in the manual, I can not copy a transition between multiple clips in Premiere 12.
Premiere copy a single transition in the clip closer to the time bar.
I had tried in various ways but to no avail. The problem can be solved?
    Thanks for the help.

    Sig. T.T. Romano,
    javascript:void(0)
I finally figured out that you can not copy a transition between multiple clips at the same time and it will copy one at a time.
What seems strange, however, because in Pinnacle, which I used until recently, this could be done, and Adobe is not less than Pinnacle.
Maybe Adobe does not consider interesting this thing, or maybe it is inserted in Premiere Pro. How, for example, in the titles, the ability to animate multiple lines. In Premiere Elements missing but I knew that in the Pro's.
I thank you anyway for your helpful answers.

  • Is there a way to sync two clips with different bit rates?

I have two clips from different camcorders of the same frame rate but slightly different frame rates. When trying to sync the 2 clips, it's nearly impossible because the frames aren't lining up. Is there anything I can do?
Where I'm trying to sync the two clips is kind of between frames.
    Thanks,

    Hi
I only know of miniDV tape Cameras and SD-Video quality - and I use an external program to do this.
JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) - Mainly I use it to go from PAL (25fps) to NTSC (29.97fps).
It does this so much better that just dropping into TimeLine in FCE/P or switch when going from iMovie/FCE/P to iDVD. They both does a sort of conversion - but the result has to me been very choppy/jumpy and not enjoyable at all.
There are even better conversions - But those are Pro applications and costs are astronomical - and the end result is not that much better at all.

  • Can I use iCloud to sync two devices with different apples Ids?

Can I use iCloud to sync two devices with different apple ID's

What do you mean by "apple ID"?  There's an ID you can use at the iTunes store to buy songs, apps, etc.  there's an ID you can use for your iCloud account - the two can be different or the same. So which service are you referring to when you talk about an apple ID?

  • Can't apply default transitions or copy attributes

I have no means of getting Premiere to apply default transitions.
I select clips, try via Sequence menu, nada
I place the cursor on the timeline Ctrl-D, nothing happens
I copy a clip and paste attributes - NOTHING. No change at all.
Could there be any setting I didn't set? Default transitions are set, and I can copy/paste audio attributes/clip effects, but nothing happens in Video.

Select clip and then go to select Sequence / Apply Default Transition To Selection (you can make this into a Keyboard Shortcut) this will make a transition at beginning and end of the clip at the same time. If you only want just one side, select the side with the Roll Edit or Ripple Trim tool and hit Apply Default Transition To Selection.
If you want to put a cross dissolve between a whole bunch of clips. Select clip and hit Apply Default Transition to Selection.

  • How do you apply a transition to multiple clips? NOT using default transition.

    Using CS6
I have videos on one track and titles on another track. I want to apply dissolve to black for the videos and gradient wipe to the titles.
Right now I have to assign dip as the default transition, select all the video, and apply default transition. Then find the gradient wipe, change *that* to the new default transition, select all the titles, and apply default transitions. Then I have to go back and reset my default transition to gradient wipe since that's my "main" default transition.
Uhhhh... why can't we just select a bunch of clips and drag ANY transition to the selection and have it apply just like regular effects? Why force us to do this complicated singular default transition dance?

  • Applying same transition to many clips

You are probably going to be sick of my questions soon.
How do I apply the same transition to all of the clips I have entered. I cannot imagine that I have to place each on individually. In my old program there was a botton to "ripple transition" which applied it to every clip. Can I do that in FCE somehow????
    Thanks again!!!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
As filters, you can double-click on any transition from browser to open the settings. Tweak them as you want and drag the transition (or filter) in favorite folder (in browser).
Now you can apply this "custom" transition (or filter) strait from browser by dragging it into the timeline.
You can also tweak a first transition (settings, duration, etc) in timeline, and option-drag it over all other transitions applied in timeline.
Finally, if you want to add the default transition between all clips in timeline, simply put the playhead before the first clip, select all clips in timeline and drag them into canvas over the edit overlay on overwrite with transition selected.

  • Double spreads - can I place an image across two pages in facing page mode?

Hi, I'm just getting into Pages to be able to create custom wedding album designs easily (I use Aperture). I'd really like to be able to place an image across two facing pages and I noticed that there is a 'facing page' mode, but this looks like it only applies to the view.
I tried laying an image across two 10x13 inch pages, but of course this doesn't work. I also tried to insert a 10x26 inch page as an alternative so that I can treat it as a double page. However, when I try to do this, every page resets to that size.
Is there a way of creating two page sizes (one normal, the other double width) in the same document so I can do this, or is there a way of spreading an image across two facing pages?
    Thanks

    brown,
You've bumped into one of Pages' limitations -- it won't allow one image across a spread. I've heard rumors of people kludging it by cutting the image in half, and putting each half on the spread pages.

  • Can you apply ranged keywords to synchronized clips?

    Howdy y'all,
I have two audio files representing separate sides of a conversation, recorded with two separate mics. (This lets me control their levels and such in post, individually.) It's trivial to turn these two clips into a single Syncronized clip, once I make whatever adjustments I wish to them indivudally. So far so good.
Now I'm at the point where I want to log the major sections of this conversation, marking ranges with keywords. But while I can select ranges on the synchronized clip with the range tool (or setting in / out points as I listen), I can't seem to assign keywords to any of these ranges. I can bring up the keyword editor and type stuff all right, but no keyword I thus create ever gets assigned to the syncronized clip. It seems that the most I can do is keyword only one or the other of the synchronized clip's constituent clips. I don't wanna do that; I want to log the whole, synthezied conversation, not just one mic's output.
I have also tried to do this by treating the separate tracks as a compound clip rather than a syncronized clip, and I encounter the same issue.
Am I missing something, or using the wrong FCPX idiom? Or can you simply not log at any level other than at the lowest level of original clips? (Which would make me sad and confused...)
Background: I am yet another person coming to FCPX after cutting my A/V teeth years ago on (in this case) FCP 5. And yes, I'm trying to use this to edit together an audio-only podcast. I got good enough at "classic" FCP idioms that I wouldn't think twice about doing it, despite the lack of a video element in the source, so it seemed natural to use FCPX for this project today. If I am flat-out using the wrong tool, please let me know. But I tried using GarageBand for this, and the lack of e.g. j/k/l made me instantly hate it...

Thanks; that does seem to do the trick.
I don't suppose there's a way to bring up a visualization of a clip's audio waveform in the viewer pane? (I refer to the middle pane in the top row.) I feel a bit crowded working with a lengthy audio track using only that tiny, scrunched view in the browser pane, and I seem to recall that you could change the view in classic FCP to display only the audio.
If I'm just doing coarse-level logging it isn't a huge deal, and I'm willing to concede that this is one thing I have to live with using a video editor on an audio-only project. But it'd be nice to have...

  • Can't adjust the duration of two clips simultaneously.

When I select two clips, each in different tracks, and try to extend the duration of both by dragging, only one of them moves.
I have read the manual, and looked for an answer online for hours. I must have accidentally changed a setting, but can't find the problem.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I guess I'm not 100% sure I could do this before. Here is what I'm trying to achieve: In track one I have video. In track two and three I have a lower 3rd and a title. I want the lower and third and title, (thus tracks 2 and 3) to stay up on screen a little longer.
I'd like to avoid having to grab one and drag it, then grab the other and extend it separately.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

  • How Do You Apply Process Effects To Multiple Clips In A Multi-Track?

A multi-track sequence brought over from Premiere, I have over a dozen clips from a funeral service video that need noise reduction.
But, because it's a process effect, I can only work on one clip at a time. Furthermore, I may need to apply several passes of the NR effect to eliminate the noise without sounding weird.
How then do I apply that effect (and its parameters) to the rest of the clips in the sequence?
In Premiere, you can copy and paste effects (and their parameters) from one clip to another. There is no such thing in Audition that I can see.

    Hi, Alex.
It seems you want to do some broadband de-noise processing. While one can do a noisefloor sampling from one clip and apply it to others (great for when you have multiple takes from the same setup), it may be best to noise sample each individually if the mic has moved position enough to cause the tonal characteristics to change.
An example would be if on-screen talent is walking in an outdoor location. In one part of the location, a particular section of the clip has a lot of BG traffic noise. Another recording has a fountain in the BG - while it still may have some of the traffic in it, the predominant BG noisefloor is "strong fountain/weak traffic", so like others have mentioned, it makes more sense to make a new BG sampling to match the characteristics of this clip.
All that being said, here is how you BATCH PROCESS / broadband de-noise a bunch of clips, it's a 4-tiered / 21-step process when starting from scratch.
NOTE: there is a manual cheat after the Batch Processing lesson - skip to that if you wish
(WARNING - this type of processing is most successful if the file has been EQ'd or gain boosted (if needed) before processing. This is also true for the noisefloor sample. It should be taken from the pre-adjusted clip so that it all matches level)
    1) find / open a source clip that best represents the BG noisefloor you wish to sample as your broadband source for processing,
then in the WAVEFORM editor window press alt-shift-C to save this selection as a new file - give it a unique name that represents its function
         a. ideally, this selection will be more than 5000 samples
         b. should be free of non-BG noise sounds (Dx, footsteps, mouth sounds, it should sound like a very short ambiance loop)
    2) with your new sample saved and your source clip still open in the UI:
         a. load your noise print file
         b. adjust the Noise Reduction and Reduce by  sliders (I suggest you start with a noise reduction value of 100% with a reduce value of 3 to 6 dB)
         c. under Advanced Settings, set Spectral to 0%, Smoothing to 20, Precision to 7, and Transition width to 2dB - these settings
are like painting not with a wide brush but with a thinner brush, which means less cancellation of frequencies you want to keep and less artifacting
         d. toggle on/off the Output Noise Only function to see just what you are subtracting in your process - a great way to make adjustments until your
noisefloor-only sound is free of Dx and other Production sounds
         e. optional advanced step - in the process UI Frequency window, you can draw a curve to select the frequency ranges that will be processed - this is another
way of "thinning the brush" so that you are NOT processing where it's not needed in the broadband range - i.e. hiss from a low-quality mic,
             open the FA window [alt-Z] to see realtime Freq. Analysis on playback of your clip with the processing;
adjust your settings and the curve in the window to counter the frequency range of the noisefloor - this process is like alchemy, wicked awesome
         f. once you're happy with your settings,  click the Save Effects Preset button (down-arrow on hard-drive) next to the Presets pulldown button.
do NOT apply your process yet - that's the next step
    3) now, you're going to create the Favorite that the Batch Process will use to process your clips
         a. select Favorites / Start Recording Favorite (every user function of the software is now being recorded into a macro)
         b. in the Noise Reduction UI, click the Load Noise Print button and select your saved file
         c. now, select your preset from the pulldown menu
         d. click the Select Entire File button below the UI Freq. window
         e. click Apply
         f. click Favorites / Stop Recording Favorite
    4) now, under EDIT, select Batch Process
         a. select your new Favorite from the pulldown tab
         b. drag and drop the files into the Batch window or load them from the Load button in the upper left of the Batch window
         c. click the Export Settings button in the bottom left
         d. set any pre/postfix labeling additions (this works a lot like Adobe Bridge's Batch Rename tool - amending the original filename to differentiate
         e. set a NEW save location to isolate the files
         f. set the format / type / bitrate  (best to keep the original format or a higher quality); when finished, click OK
         g. in the lower right corner, click the RUN button and watch the magic right before your eyes
    [HERE IS THE CHEAT]
Now that you're learned the magic of batch processing (FYI a new favorite can contain / execute multiple existing effect processes), here is what I recently did in a doc with interview footage - guys in front of a green screen with a less than perfect sound environment.
    1) in Multitrack mode, double-click your clip to process
    2) in Waveform mode, select the noisefloor area to sample and type shift-P
    3) type ctrl-shift-P to open the UI - adjust your De-noise settings for ALL of your processing
    4) type ctrl-A to select the entire file
    5) click Apply; type ctrl-shift-S to save this processed file (I add "_PROC") as an alternate to the original which still exists should you want to go back to it easily - the ALT file will be in the multitrack timeline
    6) type G (de-select I/O area) then type F12 key - returns to Multitrack mode
    7) double-click your next clip to process and repeat steps 3-7 until finished (you won't need to tweak the settings in 3 after the initial step 3)
    In 3-5 minutes, you're Done!
I discovered another layer of coolness within Audition regarding CLIP Effects Racks where one can setup a stack of effects, save as a User Preset, and apply them to either an individual clip, a set of clips, or to a track.  This is great when you want to apply, for example, a Parametric EQ for filtering an outdoor location or boosting a lav mic's High Freq. Shelf for addition sibilance PLUS a Tube-modeled Compressor to handle dynamics...you spend a lot of time tweaking the settings "just right", and now you want to apply to more than one clip on a track.
In a short film I'm working on, I use this technique to apply EQ and Room Ambiance (reverb) to camera perspective changes on a single track of ADR for off-camera Dx.  I place the Dx in a track. Splice on the camera edits to make unique clips, select the Audio Perspective preset I made for each camera angle, and Voila!
    Have fun!
