Can I delete hard drive data on dead macbook air?

I have a mid 2012 macbook air running Mavericks. Well, it used to run Mavericks. Water damage got to the logic board and now the computer does not boot (as diagnosed by Apple). I want to sell the computer, since I can still get a decent amount for it as is. But, I am worried that the information on the hard drive will be vulnerable once the new owner fixes it. I do have a password to my user account. But, I assume that some people could get around that pretty easy and get to my data.
My question: what are my options for purging my hard drive before selling? If they aren't any good options, I will just trash (recycle) it.
Thank you for the help!

So to remove the drive you'll need a special tool, a pentalobe screwdriver:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Air+13-Inch+Mid+2012+Battery+Replacement/10 950
iFixIt sells that screwdriver:
https://www.ifixit.com/Tools/MacBook-Air-5-Point-Pentalobe-Screwdriver/IF145-090 -3
Also here's my standard blurb about a liquid incident:
"Whenever a liquid spill occurs the first thing that has to happen is the laptop should be shut down immediately. All power must be removed as soon as possible.
It is especially important that the battery be disconnected and removed.
No attempt should be made to start/restart the computer since this could potentially damage the logic board beyond all repair.
All affected parts must be removed from the laptop and carefully and closely inspected. Any involved area should be marked for special treatment.
Then all affected parts would be washed in deionized water and blown dry with compressed air. (In a water spill the deionized water is probably not as critical. Depends on the mineral content of the water.).
This is especially true of the large chips on the logic board. Liquid can wick under them and cause havoc for weeks if not months and years after the incident, depends on the liquid..
The logic board should be placed in a drying/dehumidifing oven for at least two days. Longer depending on the spill. The keyboard is a separate matter."

As you quote the price in 'Pounds' I'm assuming you are in the UK!
You might want to consider one of these from Amazon.  I have one on my MBA and it works well.

  • Can I delete hard drive and still preserve 'recovery partition'?

    Hi!
I would like to delete the hard drive on my Toshiba Satellite laptop because I don't like the new Windows 7
operating system. I'm thinking of putting on the Windows XP OS since it's not as 'bloated' as the new OS.
However, I'm concerned that I might also lose the 'recovery partition' that has the factory settings. Do I
have anything to be concerned about? Thanks!

    For Sure!!
If you want to replace 7 with new XP, then you can while keeping the factory settings recovery partition by following these simple steps:
    1) First of all, you should place all your important files and document to any secure place to not face the data loss conditions.
    2) Restart Computer and press F8 key until the boot option appears on-screen.
3)Chose any visible system recovery or repair options from the list of menus appear after pressing the F8 Key.
4)After  that, you could see an option named "System Recovery option screen" and then click "restore application".
5)Follow the guidelines, and when prompted click on "Full factory settings" option.
6)After successfully performing all the tasks, you will see the new window whatever you wish with full factory settings configuration.

  • How do I use migration assistance with hard drive reader for dead macbook

    Hi,
My old mac laptop died without warning.
I took it to the apple store and they suggested getting a hard drive reader and using that to transfer
    across my files.
I've connected it up and have requested the migration assistant to transfer the files. Last night it
said it would 27 hours to transfer and now this morning it is saying 72 hours. This seems to
be a very long time - is it correct? Can I make it go faster or is there another way?
I've got a bit of music on there but nothing excessive. I do have about 15,000 photos though.
I'm not very techy so any assistance would be very helpful
    Thanks
    Sarah

Hi, that's far to long, unless maybe it's USB1.1 speed.
If USB2 or Firewire, I'd start ober & try Disk utility>Repair Disk on the external drive.

  • Can I add hard drive memory to my MacBook Pro (13" with retina display)?

I know I can use an external hard drive, but is there some way to add hard drive memory (either myself or taking it to an Apple store)?

OWC does offer internal storage upgrades which, depending upon the vintage of your MBP, may or may not be applicable:

  • How can I transfer my files and documents from external hard drive to my new MacBook Air?

I recently bought a new MacBook Air and I would like to transfer my files and documents which I already saved in my external hard drive to this new mac. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do it so far. I tried to drag some files but the rest of the documents cant be transferred.
I appreciate it if anyone could help me in thsi regard.

Describe exactly what you did when it failed and the error message you received that told you it failed. Dragging and dropping files from one drive to another will work. Having said that  however, you need to be aware that trying to copy items with the same name will result in a warning dialog box offering several different options including canceling.
To better help you it would also be helpful to know about the external drive. Did you use TimeMachine to back up to that external drive? Did you copy files from another computer to the drive?

Never seen the term exFAT in a post previously - is that an enhanced version of FAT32?
Yes it is. Here's an abstract from this Microsoft KB page
The exFAT file system is the successor to FAT32 in the FAT family of file systems. The exFAT file system is a new file system format that addresses the growing needs of mobile personal storage on different operating systems. The exFAT file system handles large files, such as those that are used for media storage, and it enables seamless interoperability between desktop computers and devices, such as portable media devices. Because of this functionality, you can easily copy files between the desktop and external devices or between the desktop and other operating systems.

  • 1TB WD hard drive issues on my macbook air

Hi, I bought a new 1 TB WD My Pssport Ultra hard drive to store movies and watch on TV. I cant copy my files to the drive.
In disk utilities, the drive format is 'MS-ODS (FAT), then when I change to MAC OS extended (journaled) and select 'Erase' it generates an error message - 'disk erase failed - couldnt unmount disk'.
Can you advise asap as my experience here is limited - thanks

Instead of Erase, go to the Partition Tab, select one partition (if that's what you need), and click the options button. Choose GUID partition table. Make it Mac OS Extended Journaled and try again.

  • Am I capable of upgrading my hard drive to my 2012 Macbook Air?

    I have recently ordered a Refurbished 11.6-inch MacBook Air 1.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5,
I have also noticed that it only has a 64GB hard drive.
Would I be capable of upgrading the hard drive so I could use more space on to my MacBook?
I would also be willing to do it myself if it comes to the case.

Yes, you can upgrade the SSD storage. See here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina/Apple-MacBook-Air-2012-Drive-I nternal-Flash
There may be other 3rd parties that sell SSD drives for your Mac as well.

  • External hard drives compatible with 2008 macbook air

Does anyone have advice on the best external hard drives currently available for the 2008 MacBook Air?

While most any external drive may work, the Toshiba Canvio USB 3.0 drives have generated quite a few threads on this board with people having problems in getting them to mount. While some cludgy work-arounds have been useful to some, I think the best one is just to avoid the drives until Toshiba works out the compatibility problems.

  • External HArd Drive not recognized by MAcBook Air

    Hi,
I bought an external hard drive(from LaCie) few months ago and plugged it once to my Macbook Air. I tried to plug it again last month and my MacBook Air didn't recognize it. I also tried to plug it in a PC and not recognized as well.
I've been told to check in the disk utility folder and to format (erase) my hard drive in order to have it running again, but even in the disk utility, hard drive is not recognized.
If anyone had the same problem before, i'd be gratefull of some help.
    Many thanks

what lacie hard drive did you buy?
some hard drives require power supplies. if your hard drive requires one make sure it's firmly connect at both ends. If you haven't done so try another outlet. Also some lacie hard drives have a 3 mode switch on the back. make sure it's set to on, if your hard drive has a switch.
Some of the lacies hard drives have a blue button on the front. try another cable. see if the hard drive shows up as a USB device.

Log into the App store using the Apple I'd you used to set up the computer and reinstall from purchases (you may have to unhide or accept it)

  • How did I transfer items from my macbook pro hard drive to my new macbook air

I have a macbook pro and just bought a macbook air. How do I transfer applications and folders to my macbook air?

    Hi glassjane,
Probably the quickest and easier way is to use Migration Assistant. Because the MacBook Air does not have an Ethernet or FireWire port you'd have to go WiFi-to-WiFi which based on the amount of content you have on your machine might be very slow, personally I wouldn't recommend it.
If you have the USB-to-Ethernet adapter for the machine you run connect the two machines via Ethernet and the process would be much faster.

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.
