Can I power up MacBook w/o power button?
Yesterday, my MacBook (with Tiger 10.4.11) started having keys that did not work (q and space bar, for sure). I shut it down with the intention of re-starting to see if that made a difference. Apparently, the power key was one of the buttons that wasn't working. So now, I can't turn it on since the power button doesn't work. Does anyone know of an alternate way to power up the MacBook? While I'm here, any ideas on why some of the keys quit working? Thanks? Jon

Sorry, but no. You should probably contact Apple support and arrange for repair.

Again,
My macbook pro just frooze while on-line. I got the rainbow wheel spinnin and it wouldn't stop I tried to do a force quit and I was unable to do that. So I held down the power button. Now when I try to restart it I can't get by the while page with the apple symbol on it. All I have is the grey circle spinning continuosly like it is working. I tried a command S when I started it back up and checked the HD and rebooted, still can't get by the startup page. Any suggestions?I'm having the same problem. I started an automatic upgrade that then got "stuck" for hours. I did a hard shut down and now all I get when I try to reboot is the spinning wheel. I haven't done a backup in 3 months and can't afford to lose everything in a reinstall. Any suggestions?

Can you charge a macbook by any other means than the power cord? For example the usb drive? My cord works fine but the outlet on the laptop is not.
The only way to charge a MBP is with a MagSafe power supply (wall or airline) try http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713

If a power cord shorts out, can it affect my Macbook Pro?
I have my 2009 macbook pro 13" plugged in, then suddenly it turns itself off and needs to be restarted using the power button, and when it shuts down, the power cord seems to 'die' too. I think the power cord might be shorting out. Could this be? Could it possibly be a completely unrelated occurrence, where the cord dies and the computer separately spontaneously shuts off (perhaps the battery is dying)? No warning pops up or anything, there is just a tiny 'pop' sound and the screen goes black. I must then use the power button to turn it back on. When I turn the computer back on, the clock is set back to some time in 2000 and wifi is knocked out. But if I put the computer in sleep mode, close the lid, then open it, it reconnects to airport with no problem, and sometimes the light on the power cord will turn back on. I haven't been able to find a similar issue anywhere.
Some more background: the computer, when turned on and for example using Google Chrome and TextEdit, and these 2 applications only, the battery power quickly deteriorates. In addition, whereas the battery used to deteriorate down to the single digit percentages, it now tends to die at about anywhere from 10-30% battery life reading. This is where I am getting the idea my battery may be going bad. This is my 3rd or 4th power cord in 5 years. This cord has not been wrapped or stored in damaging ways, I always circle it up, never use the little ears to wind the thinner cord on the A/C adaptor block because this has been shown to have problems, plus the cord gets all kinked up. I am as delicate as possible with my cords now because my previous ones have been damaged from wrapping/other technical issues (the first, which came with my Mac in '09, was the old 't' style and frayed from factory defect, the second stopped working after about 2 years so I was told it was probably due to age, the third stopped working spontaneously back in July of this year due to unknown causes, and this newly purchased one has been treated as described above, very delicately, wrapped in loose circles and placed in a padded carrying case). The cord was plugged into a surge protector when the issue occurred, at the home of a friend (not in my own home), when the issue began to occur.
Apple charges $80 for a subpar product that has time and time again failed for various and differing reasons, but they don't change anything because it makes them money when you have to keep buying new power supply cords every 6 months to a year or shorter. I have never had this particular problem where the cord overheats and shuts down my computer. I purchase from Best Buy because I can't afford to wait for 6 weeks while Apple ships new product, nor can I afford to pay extra for shipping. The nearest Apple store is an hour from my house, otherwise I'd go straight there and have my computer and cord diagnosed.
I am pretty sure the computer battery itself is dying, as well, as the unit is 5 years old.
I found it strange that no one else I could find had ever documented this same problem occurring.
Thanks for your time and advice. -

After installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro and my MacMini can't shut down, only a grey screen and finish. Must be killed by the power button. Why?
Ausserdem startet die Macs wesentlich langsamer als mit OS X 10.6.8.same here... sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't!!

I can't turn on my MacBook Air despite trying to hold down the power button and using the SMC method. BTW my battery charger lights up to a green when plugged into the laptop.
Hello cass528,
I would be concerned too if my MacBook Air would not power on. I recommend following the steps in this article when experiencing an issue like this:

After install Mavericks I can't turn off my MacBook Pro from the power button.
Dear all, prior to install Mavericks in my MacBook Pro, when I pushed the power button it appeared a dialog box which gave me the option to turn off the copmuter choosing the right option.
After the installation of Mavericks, and obviuosly having the system running, when I push the power button it does just nothing.
Does anyone have the same issue? Have someone solved it?
Thank you very much in advance for your answers, for your attention and for your help.
Kind regards. You can turn off this new sleep feature and restore the shutdown/sleep dialog box to pop up when you press the power button.
In Terminal copy & paste in the following command and then press enter:
defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem -bool no -
How do I wake up my Macbook pro from sleep after not using it for about too months, it beeps continually when the power on botton is pressed. I put it on charge for over too hours, it still can not power on
Yes, I took it to apple store, George Town, US and one out of the two memory chips was bad. It was replaced free of charge because the Mac book pro was under warranty, and it is working perfectly.

My Macbook pro randomly shut off. When i hit the power button, i can hear it start up, but after a click sound, it stops booting up. help?
Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If that doesn't help, try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
When you post, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks -

IssyFirst begin by resetting the SMC (system management controller) on your macbook as shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Have you recently changed any hardware ? May there have been any condensation that found it's way on the greater area of the keyboard and specifically near the power button ? Have you tried pressing the area directly near the said button and then pressing the power button itself simultaneously with the possibility the contact may have gone haywire ?
Good luck. -

Did something happen to it?

The best thing I could do was use a hot glue gun and pull it out that way. You could use pliers but it is so cheap it broke again. So now it's stuck in there.
