Can I use imovie to make a movie by first making a soundtrack and then adding video clips to illustrate the sound track?

I want to make a movie using imovie 11.
I want to import still photos taken from the inet and import video clips of myself over the stills. I also want this movei to illustrate a soundtrack of my singing with a karaoke file.
Is this possible?
How would I get my voice singing with the itune song so my singing and the itune become one track?
Then could I use that soundtrack to build the movie, rather than start with video an add soundtrack?
This is an ambitions project.

This is a No and Yes question.
No You can not add Audio first in any iMovie from iMovie'08 (version 7.0.x) and onwards. You need to use FinalCut Pro X to do this - Where it's rather straight forward.
Yes - it is a bit tedious but can be faked in iMovie - by first creating a Black .jpg photo. Add this to TimeLine in iMovie as many times (and at max duration) to reserve the time the movie will use. Then add Your Audo track. Then add Your photo and videosequences. There are a function in iMovie that let's You replace the original video with the one You want to insert - "Cutaway" - Then continue till all Black parts are replaced. Movie done !
But really - take a look at FinalCut where this is much easier.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

The iPhone 5S features a really neat pitch tweak effect that I would like to keep or at least emulate in iMovie. When you have completed your lasso selection, you should see the "marching ants", the animated outline around the area you selected. Don't click in the photo again or you will lose your selection. When the selection is active (ants are marching), just press Ctrl+C (command+C on a mac) to copy the selection. Then you can paste it into another photo by using Ctrl+V (command+V), or go to File>New>From Clipboard to save the face into a separate file so you can use it later.

Similar problem here. iTunes11 notified me it was available. However, auto-update failed. So, I downloaded for manual update. That failed with "permission" message. I am administrator on this machine (WIN7). I tried uninstalling old version, but it failed with same permission issue. I now can't start iTunes... throws permission message. You will not be able to use a SIM to activate a Sprint Phone. The Sprint phones are CDMA devices and would have to be activated through Sprint. Your best bet if you would not want to use Sprint as a carrier, and do not have any intention to use the device as a phone to return it for a refund. You would have to have a Sprint contract to activate this phone.

Everything was great until I exported my Imovie (09) and then every video clip that was stabilized was suddenly shaking like crazy.

I have a project that appears to be great until I export to either .M4A or .Mov and then everything looks like the cameraperson has had some serious seizures. What is odd is that the stabilization works great while working on the project in Imovie. Can anyone help? The content was captured using a Samsung HD video camera (flash memory).

Sorted.
I found a post elsewhere and the suggestion was to delete the projects folder. Then launching IMovie, the software creates a new projects folder, and I moved the projects in one by one, until I found the one that crashed it.
I suspect your solution would have been quicker however!
I just wish IMovie was less sensitive and just told me what the problem was!!

So it seems the issue is when iMovie is wanting to creat thumbnails, if I ask it to ignore then it's fine but if not it hangs up searching for the video file.

Yes and no.
You can't get an editable material over from one to the other.
eg a misspelled word in iMovie project can't be corrected in FCE/P any version.
I use iMovie combined with FCE/P in just one case when there are to many drop outs
on the raw material eg recorded in LP-mode (90min on a 60min tape)
Then iMovie can import in a more forgiving way.
BUT
When this material is moved over to FCE/P the audio parts needs to be rendered
not just one time but whenever any change is done. A very nearv-wrecking and tedious
procedure.
Summary. Joint project should use same platform. In my cases me and friend has
each one full version of FCE4 and an external hard disk that contain the movie
project.
This we exchange with each other to do each the parts that we are on best to do.

The Ipad is on a short cable to my projector. I am usually on a podium 30 feet away. No infra red receiver on the IPad and
the Iphone remote needs wi fi which is not always available in all the locations I do my teaching and lecturing in.

i think you confused us with the question 4 times!?
you can use Motion aas a stand alone app, which can output quicktimes to any codec you want, which can then be used in any app that accepts these codecs. But you wont be able to (AFAIK) import a motion project into iMovie and use it as a clip like you can in fcpx
