Can i use the drive SEAGATE 320GB 7200RPM SATA Laptop hard drive in my late 08 unibody macbook?

I have the opportunity to buy this drive new from a friend.  They bought the drive for a pc but prior to its arrival the pc went dead and they just bought a new macbook pro 17 inch, and offered this drive to me for a crazy good price.  I have the late 08 unibody macbook.
Thanks in advance for the response.
Mike

To reformat it you have to.....
Instructions
things you'll need:
Hard Drive
1
Open the system drive, usually titled "Macintosh HD." Open Applications, then Utilities and double click the "Disk Utility" program to open it. A window will open giving a list of all the drives currently mounted on the computer.
2
Select the disk that needs to be formatted on the left. It is not possible to format the startup disk unless the system has booted from the Install Disk. It is important to note that formatting the startup disk will permanently erase the data stored on the disk. If you are planning on erasing the startup disk, back up all important files and applications.
3
Click on the "Erase" tab to the right of the list of drives. The window will now display the options for erasing the hard drive and formatting it to work on the Macintosh computer.
4
Select the Volume Format from the pop-up list. In most cases it's best to leave it at "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as this is the default. This setting is the best option for running Mac OS X. If there are other requirements for the disk, then select the format that best suits your needs. If you have questions about the formats, refer to the Apple user's manual.
5
Name the hard drive. Type a name for the disk in the field where it asks for the name. This name will always appear when the disk is mounted on a Macintosh computer.
6
Click the erase button. A window will open asking to verify the erase procedure. Click the erase button in this window to start the process of erasing the disk. Once the process is complete, the drive will appear with the name it was given on the left side of the window with the list of drives and on the desktop of the Macintosh computer.
Hope that helps!

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!

In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.

  • How can i use the same id on two different laptops?

When trying to use the same login on two different laptops so that i can connect my nook to either depending on which one is free, i get the error that the id is already in use on another computer?

The issue is embedded in the way the software works.  To comply with the
Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 2000, all software companies in this
business keep track of where their software is installed, making
information about the computer and ereaders part of an ID file.  So, your
user ID is embedded in the ID file of each computer, but each computer has
a different ID of its own that is also embedded in that file.  Adobe's
master server (yes, there is one that you connect to even if you didn't
know it) also has that information, and when you try to use an ID on one
that's embedded in the file of another, Adobe's server blows the whistle,
and as you can see, you can't do that....

  • How can I use the PCI-4451 installed in a laptop?

I would like to configure a sound level meter using a laptop and PCI-4451. I need a portable and rugged system to be used in the field. What are my options? Can I use the Configurable Signal Conditioning Enclosure CA-1000?
    Thanks again.

    Hello,
The CA-1000 does not contain a PCI bus interface for cards like the PCI-4451. The CA-1000 accepts a variety of signal conditioning modules and is then connected by cable to an acquisition device.
To use the 4451 with a laptop, you would need a Cardbus to PCI expansion chassis, such as those offered by MAGMA and other companies. I mention MAGMA only because I have a small amount of experience with their products. I'm sure there are others that are equally suitable.
If you're not 100% attached to the 4451, there are a couple other options. You could use a 1394 based DAQ device such as the NI DAQPad-6052E for FireWire, which could then be co
nnected to something like the CA-1000 if necessary, depending on your signal specs. Keep in mind that even though both the 4451 and 6052E are nominally 16-bit boards, the 4451 would be more suitable for audio measurements, particularly if you need simultaneous measurements on more than one channel.
Finally, a portable PXI system with the 4472 would make an ideal platform for precision audio measurements, if this fits within your budget and your definition of portable.

  • Can I use the same TB profile on my laptop and PC via Onedrive or iCloud? If so, how?

I know I can move the location of my TB profile and create new ones using Profile manager. I have done this using my Onedrive account and TB works fine. It would be very useful to be able to use the same Onedrive profile from two PCs but is this possible and how can I do it? Many thanks.

It is possible, but prone to failure.
You can not simultaneously share a profile
Network speed is critical. Thunderbird portable and a thumb drive would be a better solution.

    Hi,
Your son is right in that Blue Tooth, the Internal Camera the Infra red sensor are all connected as USB devices internally.
It could be that there is an Issue with Numbering devices (most common) and there is a resulting conflict.
If a normal restart or even  Shut Down and reboot are not solving this then do the PRAM reset with the wired keyboard
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
As the wired keyboard and mouse would be "unpowered" items it does not seem like  "juice" issue.
The USB Controller for the Camera and the Blue Tooth connection are linked to the same controller/Bus on my iMac.
Your computer should be able to cope with the Blue Tooth Keyboard and Mouse.

  • Can I use the same TimeMachine backup (ext.drive) on my desktop and laptop (but one running Lion, the other Mtn.Lion)?

Want to use the TM backup from my desktop to keep my laptop up to date when I travel, and then vice versa, when I return.  The laptop (MacBook Pro) is running Mtn. Lion 10.8.3, but the iMac desktop is running Lion 10.7.5.  Is this even possible with the same external hard drive being used to go back and forth like that?

You can use the Time Machine backup files of the iMac onto your MacBook without any problem because your MacBook has got a newer version than the one the iMac has got. However, you shouldn't do it in your iMac, and if you do that, you might damage OS X because your Time Machine apps will replace Lion apps.
You can still restore individual data onto your iMac > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html Note that you can back up both Macs onto the same external disk, but you can't use the same backup in both, so Time Machine will create another backup for each Mac you have

  • Can I use the same hard drive to back up my photos and also do Time Machine backups?

I bought a 1T external hard drive today for my MacBookPro with the intentions of backing up my iPhoto library, and then deleting it to make more space on my hard drive.
I also tried and failed to install Time Capsule because my Verizon modem won't let Time Capsule run with it unless I use Time Capsule as my wireless.
That said, I want to back up my computer, and even though I copied my iPhoto library already, I have plenty of space to do a Time Machine backup as well.
Is this something I can do? Please let me know. After two hours on the phone with Apple only to learn Time Capsule was a waste of money, I'm hoping I don't need to buy another external HD yet…

If you want to use the drive for both TimeMachine and storage, attach the drive and then open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.  Choose the new hard drive from the left sidebar, and then in the main panel choose Partition.
Choose the number of partitions to be two.  Click the first partition and change the size if you do not want the default half of the drive.  Name the partition (such as Backups), then accept the default format Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partition table as GUID.  Click Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.
Then do the same for the second partition, but of course, give it a different name.
    When finished Quit Disk Utility.
Turn ON TimeMachine in System Preferences and direct it to your backup partition.

I have a Time Capsule with 2tb of storage, and an I-Mac with 500Gb. (which is at capacity) Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?

Can I use the Time Capsule to store data from my hard drive that I want to access later in addition to backing up the hard drive?
Yes, but if you move the "original" data on your iMac to the Time Capsule....then the "original" data is now on the Time Capsule disk.
When...not if...the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you have no backups for this data.
Perhaps a much safer plan might be to add an external hard drive attached directly to your iMac. Then, move the data to that drive from the iMac.
Now, Time Machine will back up both your iMac and the external hard drive so you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another. Would that plan work for you?
