Can iMovies play on DVD players?

Is there ANY way to record an iMovie to a DVD so that it can be played on a DVD player?
I know how to burn projects to disks, that's not a problem. I've also figured out how to save it as a Quicktime file and burn it and play it on other computers like that, but I can't figure out how to make it DVD player compatible.
Is there even a way to do that?

Welcome to the forum, Nuldanar.
Yes, iMovie lets us burn a DVD that plays in a DVD player/TV. We can share (export) the iMovie project to the application iDVD, which encodes the video & audio and burns the DVD.
Choose the Share > iDVD command from the iMovie menubar. iDVD will create a new project containing your iMovie movie. Configure the DVD as you want it, then tell iDVD to burn the DVD.
Don't miss that iMovie Help — in the iMovie menubar — helps answer question like yours. Searching iMovie Help for "DVD" shows you a list of topics.

Good luck with your project.

My question is I ripped a DVD to test out using handbrake default settings which ripped it to my desktop as a MP4 file, If I burn MP4 file to DVD will it play on DVD players?
If not what extension do you need to convert to, to get it to play on DVD players and how do you convert it?
    Thanks

    You are most welcome.
Btw .... Visual Hub might be a good choice also (if you can still get it). That is if one chooses to convert these files for use within iMovie or iDvd.

  • HELP!!! HD DVD can't play with DVD PLAYER

Made a DVD with final cut pro from Sony HDV camcorder, play well on Macbook pro but can not play on regular DVD PLAYER

That shouldn't surprise you.  DVD players can play DVDs, which are standard definition.  They will not play HD DVD discs.  For that you need a Mac or one of the (now obsolete) Toshiba HD DVD players.
Essentially, you have three options for delivering video on optical disc.:
DVD: standard definition content only.  Finalized disc will play in DVD players and most computers with DVD drives and player software installed.
HD DVD: an obsolete format that was abandoned by its developers after losing out to Blu-ray.  HD DVDs use the same DVD-5 discs as DVD, but will play HD  content when played in an HD DVD player (none currently being made) or in later model Mac computers.  HD DVD discs will NOT play in DVD players.
Blu-ray: Can play Blu-ray discs and DVD discs.  Blu-ray can contain both HD and SD content.  To create a Blu-ray disc, you'll need Blu-ray authoring software and a Blu-ray burner.  To view the disc, you'll need a Blu-ray player.  DVD players will not play Blu-ray discs.

  • IDVD CAN  I PLAY A DVD FROM MY MAC ON TO MY TV ?

    PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP
CAN I PLAY A DVD FROM MY MAC ON TO MY TV BY CONNECTING IT SOME HOW ?

    Hi
Does Your Mac have a S-video out ? Some does.
The way to connect isn't easy or straight forward - I use a S-VHS VCR in between
and now one can buy a DVD-player for less than $75-50 I wonder if it's really
    worth the hazzle.
Playback from iMovie via FireWire and an Analog/Digital box to TV is one way
but then the DVD has to be converted to streamingDV.
iDVD can't deliver out to FireWire
    DVD-player not so either
And PLEASE ! Don't shout (using capital letters = Shouting on e-media)
    Yours Bengt W

  • I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.

I can't play a DVD from my superdrive via my macbook pro to apple TV via airplay.  The movie plays fine on the macbook if I'm not trying to airplay.  The airplay works fine if I'm not trying to play a movie from the superdrive.  I think my apple TV is Gen 2.

If you get a checkerboard pattern it's because Apple block Airplay Mirroring of protected media.
    VLC Player may work.

Any suggestions that preserves a simple workflow much appreciated.

  • DVD plays on DVD players but not on all PCs

I used Idvd to burn a dvd. It plays on DVD players but the audio is garbled when played on some PCs running windows XP. The same PC plays other DVDs ok.
Has anyone had this problem? Does a PC require quicktime in order to play a DVD made from Final cut and IDVD?
    Thanks for any help

    No.
Did you burn it onto a DVD+R or DVD-R? Many PCs don't play DVD-Rs well.

  • Can't play library DVD

Do you have an App installed on your imac to enable playing the DVD, like iDVD?  You do need an App for this; it will not natively play.
iDVD is NOT for replaying DVDs, it is for creating DVDs from iMovie.
All Macs have DVD Player installed. Alternatively use VLC.

  • How do you burn a slideshow to a DVD that will play on DVD players and PC computers?

I burned a slideshow in Aperture onto a DVD containing about 40 photos with a sound track from iTunes.  The disk will play on my iMac but not on my wife's PC or on two of our DVD players (less than three years old.).  What am I missing in the burning sequence that causes the problem?

What Shutttleworth says is the way to go however you might run into one gotcha, iDvd is no longer available if you bought your current machine with Lion on it.
iDvd use to be part of iLife but is no longer offered as either a seperate download from the App Store or as part of any App Store bundle. If you can still find an iLife boxed set iDvd will be on the DVD in the box. Other then that you'll need to look at thrid party solutions.
Of course if you upgraded to Lion and had iLife before the upgrade you should have a copy of iDvd.
    good luck

  • Burned DVD plays in computers, but does not play in DVD players

I found a discussion of a similar problem from back in 2010, but in that thread the only reply was suggested burning at 1x and trying different media. There was no further correspondence so I can't tell if that suggestion resolved the issue. I tried burning again at 1x and using different media (we're using Verbatim) without success, so I ask again.
The problem is with menu navigation in DVD.
The main menu has the probelem. It has four buttons arranged in a 2x2 square that send viewers to 4 submenus. Each submenu has three buttons - play without subtitles, play with subtitles, return to main menu.
In any computer (we've tried it in 8: MACs and PCs) navigation of the main menu works perfectly using the mouse (although not the up/down left/right buttons on the keyboard... is THAT normal?).
But in the four DVD players in which we've tried it we cannot navigate to the button on the lower right using the buttons on their remote controls, although the other three buttons work just fine. This happens in our ancient $29 DVD player, in our brand new $1,000 blu-ray player and in everything in between.
I've looked at the programing and cannot find any difference between the buttons that work and the one that doesn't. The design preview perfectly and to add confusion a previous version of this disc (I had to link one timeline to new media) plays perfectly in any player.
I'm stumped. I'd be panicked except for the fact that, post sign-off, the client has decided to make just one more little change in the video, so I have another couple of days.
    Thanks, JP

Misters Simon and Jones - THAT WAS IT !!!
I'm a newby and self-taught with a long way to go.
I had stumbled across this screen while working on another project weeks ago, but at that moment I was working to deadline and did not pay the least attention to it. Of course, when I tried to go back to the screen I hadn't the faintest idea where it was or what the screen/process was called and, so, had no way to look it up.
It wasn't until you said "Button Routing" that it clicked. THAT sounded like it was exactly the problem, so I trolled HELP and found the answer. Thanks for the very useful stab in the dark.
My test DVD hasn't finished burning, so I'm not absolutely sure myproblem is solved, but I am very confident you have directed me to the solution.
I'm working studio production today and through the weekend, but before I go incommunicado for 4 days, I wanted to say "Thanks a bunch".

  • DVD made with iDVD not playing in DVD players

I have a iMac G5 and iDVD 4. I use FCP to edit. I have made many DVDs from exporting my sequences to quicktime. Then I import that export into iDVD, and this has always been fine. For some reason, my latest project will only play on my computer using this method, not any of my 3 DVD players. What could be causing this? Did I change a setting I'm unaware of? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've watsed a good many blank DVDs from this glitch. Thank you!

I have a similar problem having to do with the menu.
I have a client who needs dvds burned with their logo as a background. When I import a tiff (or any other format) into iDVD4.0.1 on the simplest template available (brushed metal 2) everything burns fine, the disk plays on a computer, but on commercial dvd deck it freezes when you hit play (one unit indicates "pause" on the display). If I remove the graphic from the background, and burn that to disk
    , it plays fine.
The iDVD help says you can drag your own photos to a menu, so if this is causing a problem, they certainly aren't aware of it. What bugs me, is why isn't there a "blank" template (or is there one that I've missed)?
BTW this has also happened to me at work two years ago with an earlier version of iDVD. Yet it doesn't happen on my client's version of iDVD (I have a call in to see what version they have). And who do you call when Apple only refers you to forums?
Thanks for any info, and please excuse any ignorance on my part.

  • How can I play a dvd on my Mac and display it through Apple TV

I want to use my DVD drive on my mac to play back movies through my apple tv2. I notice that on my iPad, iPhone, iTunes on my computer all have the AirPlay option to display the video on my TV through Apple TV. I do not want to burn my DVD onto my Mac and play through iTunes becasue its a hassle.

One thing you can do is to play the DVD in your Mac using DVD Player instead of iTunes, and then, turn on AirPlay Mirroring to stream your computer's display to your Apple TV > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
If your Mac isn't compatible with AirPlay Mirroring, use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com This is the only option, because the Apple TV isn't compatible with discs
Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.
VLC player is believed to work.
