Can latest Essbase version connect to Oracle data sources  directly?

Hi
As you know in Essbase 9.3.1, you only can connect to any relational database via an ODBC data source and Essabse cannot talk to relational databases directly. Can Essbase 11.1.1 can talk to Oracle database directly or via OCI?
Chandra

Essbase Studio in 11X add jdbc connections, but there is still no "direct" connection. I'm not sure if I would want one. It would imply that Essbase is now tied directly to Oracle databases and we could lose the flexability to connect to other sources.

  • Not able to connect to Oracle Data source in Oracle Essbase Studio 11.1.2.2

    Hi,
When i tried to connect to Oracle data source, i get this error "Unable to establigh connection. Ensure that the server is running, the user name and password are correct, and the ohter data fields match the server's configuration" when i tried to select database.
If i change server name from to localhost, it allows to select database and does not give any error. but clicking on next button says localhost is not accepted, it needs machine name. Then how to connect to Oracle Data source?

It is possible the Oracle db has not been installed correctly, I take this is a personal install on a laptop, if so did you install the loopback adaptor.
Have you tried the connection using the ip of the machine.

  • Connecting to Oracle Data Source using SSIS

    Hi Guys,
Please I am working on a BI Project that requires me to connect to an oracle data source using SSIS.
Can someone assist me with the required steps to achieve that.
I dont want to use a third party tool.
    Thanks
    me

    Hi lilutchay,
If the SQL Server Integration Services is Enterprise or Developer edition of SQL Server 2008, we can use
Microsoft Connector Version 1.2 for Oracle to connect Oracle databases with version Oracle 9.2.0.4 or higher, Oracle 10.x or Oracle 11.x. If the SQL Server Integration Services is Enterprise or Developer edition of SQL Server 2012, we can use
Microsoft Connector Version 2.0 for Oracle to connect Oracle databases with version Oracle 9.2.0.4 or higher, Oracle 10.x or Oracle 11.x.
While if we want to connect to other Oracle version databases, we can use
OLE DB provider for Oracle which has been tested in SSIS labs and is recommended by Microsoft.
For the detail steps for Microsoft Connector for Oracle, we can refer to the first blog suggested by Deric. For more details about the use of connecting to oracle using Oracle Provider for OLEDB from SSIS, please refer to the blog below:

  • Can SQL*Plus connect via ODBC to NON-Oracle data source?????

I am struggling to understand something. I downloaded Oracle instance client, SQL*Plus and ODBC components with the hopes of being able to connect via SQL*Plus to a non-Oracle/ODBC compliant database.
Is this possible? Or is SQL*Plus ability to connect via ODBC only to an Oracle data source??
    Thanks...

sqlplus only connects to oracle. you can use the odbc driver from instant client to allow other applications to access oracle via odbc (e.g. excel). if you need to connect to non-oracle odbc database (ms-access, foxpro, etc.) you need odbc driver for those sources.
you can use sqldeveloper to connect to oracle and non-oracle databases. check otn product info for sqldeveloper for more details.

  • Oracle Data Source for Essbase

    Hi, Good Morning to ALL,
I have a doubt using Oracle Data Source with Essbase. When we use Oracle as the Data Source to load the data into Essbase cubes which of the following options would be better?
    1. Is it better to create a single table or view, when the data is in multiple tables and then load into essbase?
    OR
    2. Is it better to join the tables by entering the SELECT statement in the Administration Services Console during the data load?
Which of these methods can be processed faster?
    Please Advice.......
Thanks for the help in Advance...........

There are a couple of theories for loading Essbase from relational sources.
To be optimal there are techniques that you can create in the relational database to make joining more efficient.
    Single View/Table
Everything you need in one large view. You can create one of these every period if you are performing incremental loads.
    Star Schema
One large fact table all dimensions are represented with single Id foreign keys
One dimension table per dimension whose primary keys are connected to the fact
    Snow-flake Schema
One large fact table all dimensions are represented with single Id foreign keys
Mutiple dimension tables per dimension whose primary keys are foreign keys in each connecting table then to the fact
These are the "text book" options; many other hybrid ways have been developed in recent years.
I would recommend using EIS against any relational source, as it will guide you through the OLAP loading process.

I definitely do not know much about JSP but
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/sqlj_jdbc/htdocs/jdbc_faq.html
    indicates
    <quote>
This URL connects to the same database using the the OCI driver and the SID inst1 without specifying the username or password.
    jdbc:oracle:oci:@myhost:1521:inst1
    <quote>
I do not see the port information in your connect string. Is that an issue?

  • How to connect to different data sources in  XI 3.1 UNIVERSE?

    hi experts,
We are going to migrate from BO 6.5 to  BO XI3.1.
and we have different data sources to extract and generate the reports using various tools like Webi,Crystal Reports, Deski etc.
1         How to connect to different data sources like SAP BI query, DB2, Oracle etc,, provide me the step by step solution.
2     We need to migrate the universes and reports from BO 6.5 to BO XI 3.1 using the Report Conversion Tool.
can we directly convert from the deski reports to Webi or do we need to migrate first through Import Wizard?
3    Scheduling the Reports through Infoview
4    Various issues and how to resolve those issues, we generally face while scheduling, and while creating the queries like for example time out errors etc..
    5    BO Security
6    Universe creation with best practices and the loops, contexts, aliases etc..
please provide me the step by step solution documents and links.

I would recommend to take a look at the official documentation. YOu can find this here
    http://help.sap.com
NAvugate to SAP BusinessObjects->All products and the select the product you want eg. BusinessObjects ENterprise or Universe designer and the appropriate version XI 3.1. Take a look at the admin and the user guides.
Currently the Data FEderator will allow you to buid a universe that access data from various data sources. Another option is to merge queries from different universes at report level.

  • Mapping deploy for Non-Oracle Data Source hangs

    Hi All,
I am trying to deploy mapping for Non-Oracle Data Source and it hangs.
Oracle version is 10.2.0.3 and OWB version is 10.2.0.1.3.1
It would be really appreciated if you can help.
    Thanks!
    PS.

That helpes quite a bit. I still can't get the app to retrieve data, but I am getting a more useful message in the log:
[Error in allocating a connection. Cause: Connection could not be allocated because: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied]
As you suggested, I removed the <default-resource-principal> stuff from sun-web.xml and modified it to match your example. Additionally, I changed the <res-ref-name> in web.xml from "jdbc/jdbc-simple" to "jdbc/oracle-dev".
The Connection Pool "Ping" from the Admin Console is successful with the user and password I have set in the parameters. (it fails if I change them, so I am pretty sure that is set up correctly) Is there another place I should check for user/pass information? Do I need to do anything to the samples/database.properties file?
By the way, this is the 4th quarter 2004 release of app server. Would it be beneficial to move to the Q1 2005 beta?
Many thanks for your help so far...

  • Performance issue with Oracle data source

    Hi all,
I've a rather strange problem that I'm stuck on need some assistance on.
I have a rules file which drags data in via an SQL data source thats an Oracle server. If I cut/paste the 3 sections of "select" "from" and "where" into SQL-Developer and run the query, it takes less than 1 second to complete. When I run the "load data" with this rule file or even use the "Retrieve" with the rules file edit, it takes up to an hour to complete/retrieve the data.
The table in question being used has millions of rows and I'm using one of the indexed fields to retrieve the data. It's as if the Essbase/Rule file is ognoring the index, or I have a config issue with the ODBC settings on the server that is causing the problem.
ODBC.INI file entry for the Oracle server as follows (changed any sensitive info to xxx or 999).
    [XXX]

Can anyone please advise on this lack of performance.
    Thanks in advance

One other thing that I've seen is that if your Oracle data source and Essbase server are in different geographic locations, you can get some delay when it retrieves data over the WAN. I guess there is some handshaking going on when passing the data from Oracle to Essbase (either by record or groups of records) that is slowed WAY down over the WAN.
Our solution to this was remove teh query out of the load rule, run it via SQL+ on a command line at the geographic location where the Oracle database is, then ftp the resulting file to where the Essbase server is.
With upwards of 6 million records being retrieved, it took around 4 hours in the load rule, but running the query via command line took 10 minutes, then the ftp took less than 5.

  • CrystalReports error in XI 3.1 with Oracle Data Source

Having trouble running Crystal Reports with Oracle data source off XI 3.1 SP3. Reports hang through CMC or InfoView. Have no trouble on identical environment (presumably) with the same reports. Basically this happened after migration.
Report can be run on designer on the server box (suggesting the connection is good) however once uploaded to CMS, it hangs with error. This is not about an specific report only reports with Oracle Data source (Oracle client already installed and connection established)
    Any comments appreciated.

    Thank you for your reply.
Seems like a re-boot resolved the problem.

  • Help with Creating a Oracle Data Source

    Hello:
I am trying to create a Oracle Data source.
I was successful in creating a JDBC Conection Pool.
But I am stumped creating a new datasource that uses the Oracle Connection Pool.
It asks for a JNDI Name and I have no clue what I should enter in this box.
    Can somebody help me?
    Thanks.
    venki

Enter whatever name suits you. This is the name you will use when looking up your datasource in the JNDI tree, i.e.
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    DataSource oracleDS = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("myJNDIName");

  • Oracle Data Source not showing proposal fields

Hi, I need to create a DB Connect - Oracle Data Source. I go to the table / view matchcode, and I find the view we created for this data source, and in Proposal it doesn't bring any fields. I press the refresh button, and nothing happens.
Any idea what this could be??
    Tanks in Advance
    Manuel.-

    HI
Change the data in the Flat file for Date field in the format YYYYMMDD. Then try viewing the Preview.
If it still shows error message like your system format does not match, Check the System date format, you can check in SU01-->defaults tab, change the data in the flat file with your system format and check.
    Hope this helps,
