Can .lrcat and .lrdata files be on different drives?

I use a MacPro. My boot drive is a 3 TB internal hard drive. My .lrdata file (LR 5) is over 275 GB because I have 1:1 previews for all of my photos. I have recently purchased a 240GB SSD which I want to use as my boot drive to increase processing times. Can I have the .lrcat file on my SSD (for speed) and the corresponding .lrdata file on another drive?
Thanks!!

0. Move "{path-to-catalog-folder}/{catalog-name} Previews.lrdata" folder to preferred location.
1. Open Terminal (it's in Utilties folder of Applications).
2. Type
ln -s "{path-to-where-you-moved-lr-previews}"  "{path-to-catalog-folder}/{catalog-name} Previews.lrdata"
then press 'Enter' (the return key).
note: {path-to...} should be replaced by the correct path on your system.
Let me/us know if you get stuck.

While I've got your learned attention, I have more questions. My current state of affairs is that I have my .lrcat file copied on both my 240 GB SSD drive and my 3TB internal additional drive. The location of my "Cache for Previews" file is on the 3 TB drive for both .lrcat files. However, the size of the .lrdata file is 271 GB. My questions are these: 1.Does Lightroom create the "Cache for Previews"  file from the .lrdata file? 2, If so, is the maximum amount of info LR can use to create the Cache for Previews file 200 GB?, and 3. Will your suggestions be a work around for this 200 GB limit?
1. "Cache for Previews" is a folder named "{Catalog} Previews.lrdata".
2. There is no size limitation that I am aware of, other than disk space.
3. Assuming there is no limitation other than disk space, then yes.

  • Can Movie and TV files reside on different (external) HD?

My entire iTunes library currently resides on my internal HD. I would like to keep all files, except movie and TV files, on my internal drive so I'll have them when I travel.
I don't need the movie and TV files with me and would like to move them to an external drive. Is there a way to do this and have iTunes know where to look for them?
    Thanks for any suggestions....

David, welcome to discussions! You may find this link from MacMuse helpful on how to move iTunes to a different drive, either internal or external. I used this information to move my music to an EHD on my old PC where it worked just fine. One trick, you must always boot up the EHD prior to opening iTunes or iTunes will revert the location of the iTunes music folder back to the main drive & you will have a bunch of dead links to your song files. Post back if you have any questions.
    Oops, forgot the link!

  • Moving lrcat and lrdata files to another drive

I am running Lightroom 4 and keep all my photos on an external drive, (LaCie), backing them up to another external, (Big LaCie), but the lrdata and lrcat files are held on my start-up disk, (Mac SSD), for some reason and this is now so full that it is slowing up / stopping the whole computer.
(The Backups folder in the picture above simply holds backups of the data and cat files).
Obviously, I think, it would be best to move the data and cat files to the external disk LC but I am worried to do this and then find that these files will not be found by LR.
Please can someone tell me how I should resolve this issue while my computer still works? Cheers.

The catalogue file can be moved but if you're moving it to an external drive I'd add a word of caution.
It will almost certainly slow the running of LR down unless you've got a fast link external drive.  There's noting to stop you copying it to the external drive as an experiment.  I'd rename it whilst copying as you don't get confused as to which is which.  You only need to copy the lrcat file.  LR will rebuild the previews file.
Personally I'd look at other files that can be moved (starting with the LR backup files, as they shouldn't be on the same drive as your main catalog anyway in case that drive dies and you lose both the live catalog and all your backups...in case you're not backing up the backups somewhere else too).   After that I'd move any files that are data/media from the SSD...Movies, Music Documents etc.
As for why the catalog is on your SSD, well that's where it will run fastest from (though differences vary from system to system).  I have a separate SSD just for my LR catalog.

I second the whole iTunes folder approach.
If for some reason you have split the media folder from the library files then the media folder needs to restored to the same path it used to have while the library files can be copied into the music folder of your new profile.
If in dobut, backup up the entire Documents and Settings folder before wiping the infected drive, but be selective about what you restore as many viruses drop active components capable of reinfecting the compuer in the temp folders and internet caches. It is much easier to backup more than you need than to discover after the fact that you no longer have access to some vital project you'd been storing in a folder on the desktop.

You posted here so would assume you are also talking about running Windows.
Are the drives NTFS and use on Windows?
    Are they Mac HFS formatted?
You likely will need NTFS for OS X in one case. to mount PC and use under Mac OS Lion
MacDrive to mount and WRITE to HFS drives under Windows

How can I save my files to a thumb drive?

    Hi !@#$%^&*()_+ (I hear ya!),
Are you referring to files stored in your Acrobat.com online account? If so, you can log in to your account at https://cloud.acrobat.com/files and select the files that you want to download/save to a flash drive. By default, they should download to your Downloads folder. From there, you can move them on to a flash drive.

Updated to Mavericks OS X but can't use my external drive by WD My Passport. The Mac reads it but I can't add/remove files to the external drive. Help?!
The WD My Passport, I purchased back in early December 2013 & I just used it the other day after I updated my Macbook... & of course it says in the online manual it works for Mac Lion, Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard but not this new Maverick update. Is there anything I can do?

I like the free demo of SuperDuper to make clones. It's free, Tiger and Leopard ready and is easy to use. If you buy the full version you can do incremental backups.
You should use Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, booted up on your install disk, before you make a clone of it.
I then partition my external disk, in Disk Utility, with a partition that is the same size , actually a tad bigger, as my system disk. I then use SuperDuper to clone my system disk over to that partition.
With a clone on an external FireWire drive (USB drives are not bootable on some Macs) you can bootup on it to do your repairs or just run your Mac anytime you have trouble with your main drive. Be careful, there are a few external FireWire drives out there that are not bootable on Macs. Check the drive's manual to be sure.

  • How can I backup my files to an external drive

how can I backup my files to an external drive??  Can't seem to drag files to the external drive icon

Is the drive formatted for the Mac? Is it a new drive? If so it's not formatted properly:
    Drive Preparation
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Photos, .lrcat and .lrdata on Dropbox

Anyone tried to use dropbox as the location for photos and catalog files?
I'm trying to do this, but everytime I open Lightroom from a diferent machine, it creates conflicting .lrdata and .lrcat files on Dropbox folder.
    Any tips?
Or any other idea to share a same catalog/photos on more than one machine?

I have never tried it with Dropbox, although I use that to get my Keepass data to my Droid & home computer. I do sort of this same thing with networked computers. You can copy the lrcat file into dropbox, and then drag it out to someplace on the second machine. Now open LR on this computer. If the lrcat it used last time is not there, it will ask you to browse to a catalog file. Use the one you just brought to this machine. If it opens with a different Catalog than this one you want, hit File/Open Catalog. Browse to the lrcat file you want, and click on it. Remember, any changes, and you will have to replace the lrcat file in the other machine too.

  • Differences between lrcat and lrdb files with new OS and LR 2?

So I just refurbished my machine by wipping my drives that contain the
operating system (Win XP Pro) and other program files. I did regular backups
of all including the various settings for lightroom and everything else I
could find outside of the backup that LR would do on it's own. Previously,
before this refurbishment, I was using LR 1.4 and just did install LR 2.1. I
hadn't upgraded any of my LR databases as I created a temporary picture
database on another drive just to test drive 2.1. So essentially, I had both
LR 1.4 and LR 2.1 install simutaniously. Didn't have any issues either, but
again, just checking out 2.1 prior to abandoning 1.4. Anyhow, in my new
setup I was just going to go with LR 2.1. Realizing that my catalog files
(.lrcat) would prompt to be updated, I am thinking I am fine. But since
Adobe's LR likes to place files all over the place from 'program files' to
'application data' to 'my pictures', I ended up with what "seems" to be some
duplicates and/or am a bit confused as I am not sure what goes where. I
mean, I think I have it all down as I backed up some items such as the lrdb
files and then brought in some stuff I had backed up before this
refurbishment. All seems fine, but I would rather aviod issues in the
future. So could someone tell me what goes where and their file name(s) and
extensions? And when doing this, what is the difference between the lrcat
and the lrdb files? Seems LR 2.1 doesn't contain or create lrdb files. And
lastly, where are my preview files? When I set the lrcat files to point to
my old setup/stuff, the pictures just take a very quick moment before they
are clear and whatnot. Is it best just to recreate? And lastly, is there a
way for me to test and check to make sure I moved the right things into the
right places and that all is working as it should with the proper files? As
an example, all the folders/files that were here "C:\Documents and
    Settings\Mark G\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom" I just copied and wrote
over from my backup prior to the refurbishment and things such as my custom
and downloaded web galleries look fine. Any other thoughts? Sorry for the
long read and thanks for any and all help/input you all can provide.

    >And when doing this, what is the difference between the lrcat
    >and the lrdb files?
In versions up to and including V1.0, Lightroom catalog files were .lrdb (for Lightroom database). So, if you have already been working with V1.4 you can get rid of any .lrdb files that you may still have.
As regards file locations you could do searches for the following file types:
    .lrcat (catalogues and backed-up catalogues)
    .lrtemplate (templates and presets)
    .agprefs (your preferences file)
previews.ldata (in same folder and with same name as your catalogs)
Lightroom allows you to choose where your catalogs (and associated previews) are stored. It also allows you to specify where Lightroom backs up your catalogs.
Templates and presets are stored in C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom

Can't use zip 7 to zip and send files. Keep getting error message
There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install a program or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel. There is no mail program in the default programs control panel. There's no file to associate with it.

    Hi CB01,
Thank you for your question. I understand that you need to set up a default mail program to mail zip 7 files.
In the Control Panel of your operating system there are file extensions that you can set a default program to use for mailing.

  • SQL Loader and control file changes for different users

In the front end of my application I can select a data file and a control file, and load data to the table mentioned in .ctl file. Every user who logs in uses the same .ctl file and so loads onto the same table. Now I want the user to load data onto the table in his own schema. I can get the username of the user currently logged in and i want to insert it into that username.table. So can i copy the contents of the .ctl file into a variable, modify it into username.table in that string and pass that variable as a parameter to the sqlldr command instead of the .ctl file.
Or is there a better way how I can modify the same control file everytime to change tablename to username.tablename in .ctl file and pass to sqlldr to load data to table in local user schema table.
    Thanks and Regards

Thanks for the reply .. user do have their user credentials but only for the application ... but all users use a common loader and control file once they log into the application. So irrespective of which user is logged in he selects the same control file and loads to the same table mentioned in the control file .. i instead want user to be able to load to the table in control file but into his schema like username.tablename instead of just the tablename mentioned in .ctl file.

  • Rescue and Recovery Files to a different machine

I have used R&R weekly to back up my system (Lenovo 3000-N100 0768-2CU, WinXP 32-bit) to an external USB HDD. My BIOS chip set died, and now I am wondering if I can recover only my files to another machine.
I don't want to install the full blown Lenovo system to another set of hardware. I only want to get the individual files (office documents, PDFs, etc...) and copy the files to another existing system.
It seems that this is not possible, because the R&R program saves everything as compressed, binary data. Is this correct? Is there anything I can do?
Thank you very much for any help or advice you can provide.

You can use a USB enclosure for the hard drive to access your personal data.
I don't know if it's possible to extract data from the R&R backups.
