I can successfully mount using Thunar "veeStorage" and "veePortable", which are external USB drives.

Doing "sudo mount --all" doesn't mount them. I have to manually mount them with

sudo mount /dev/sda2 /media/veeSSD

Mr. Elendig:
Why not use automounting instead?
To install Arch packages I needed an Internet connection, which required use of a Sierra Wireless card, which required chatscripts stored on another filesystem.  In my first Arch forum post ever, the one preceding this one, I learned to mount a device by creating a mountpoint in /media then invoking #mount.  After installing all packages and creating a user name, I signed on with xfce4 and plugged in the usb device again.  It didn't mount.  So I did it manually using sudo.  Since that worked I had the idea that adding the mountpoints to /etc/fstab would be useful, so I did.  When that didn't work I decided to just ask for help.
So sure, I'm down for some automounting action.  How do I do it?

Can I set up the phone so it can only dial certain numbers?
I want to get an iPhone for a disabled user and want to reduce the potential for making mistakes.

You cannot prohibit an iPhone owner from dialing numbers, but you can certainly make it much more convenient to dial certain numbers.
Place the convenient numbers in either Phone favorites, or make those numbers the only contacts the person has.

  • Can you block certain photo galleries so people can only view certain ones?

If I create a website in iWeb and I want to post a photo gallery that I have uploaded to my mobileme account, is there a way to have it so that people who click on that gallery can ONLY VIEW THAT SINGLE gallery, and not be able to see any of my other online galleries?

Yes, you can. There's an option in the gallery's setting, "Hide Album on my gallery page", which will isolate it from the other galleries, both on the main gallery page and in that particular gallery. This gallery is an exmaple of that.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

At work we are setting up a laptop in order to do only one thing - use one particular website. I'd like to make sure nobody can visit any other sites.

  • I have two CDROM (atapi & scsi) on my intel box but can only mount the scsi why is this?

PLs tell us what command you use to try mounting - if you are using vold I guess there can be only one default device so this may explain it?
Also show us the relevant nodes for the 2 devices in /dev
You might want to turn of vold (/etc/init.d/volmgt stop) to tinker with mounting the drives manually

  • Yahoo Mail account can only see certain subfolders, not main inbox

Can anyone please help? I've been on the phone with Apple tech support for 2 hours. I have a Yahoo Plus mail account that I've had for about 8 years. I've had my iPhone for a week now and have had no problems receiving or sending mail from my Yahoo account up until today. Today, I noticed my inbox was not updating. All of my subfolders (Trash, Bulk, other self created folders) retrieve email perfectly. My Inbox and Sent Items folders, however, won't retrieve mails, and they just sit there with the pinwheel saying "Checking for mail." I've done a soft reset on the iPhone, deleted and recreated the account multiple times, then even did a full software restore on the phone. No luck. I created a fake Yahoo account and used it to check mail and it works perfectly. This to me indicates a Yahoo issue.
The last guy I spoke to in Apple customer service mentioned that older Yahoo accounts were stored on an older server, and that those older account were having problems and not working correctly. His solution was to create a new account, as those are configured on the new server. I'd rather not do that considering I've had this account for 8 years now. Does anyone know if this sounds correct? If that's the case, it's a ridiculous Yahoo problem, especially if it means loyal users have to start over (and I'm a paying user as well).
I'd welcome any thoughts or suggestions. In typical Yahoo fashion, they're unavailable on the weekends, but I was able to get their email help line which is open during the week. It's 1-866-562-7219. If you're having the same issues that I am, join me in bombarding them with calls until they get it fixed.

I read somewhere someone suggest going into your Yahoo account via the web interface, and send an email through that. You may be promted to enter a code to prove you are a human (a manner of spam protection). Doing that apparently "unlocked" the Yahoo account and it would work again. Give it a shot, its worth a try and not hard to do.
I had very bad service during the week with Yahoo and decided to move all my mail accounts to GMail. I don't get push email, but I get CONSISTENT mail delivery, which is better than intermittent push.

  • Can Only Read Certain Discs

I don't use discs very often, but recently I noticed that my macbook pro is unable to read a lot of my discs. The machine will accept the disc, whirr for a while, then eject it without seeming to recognize it. This is especially confusing as I know it was able to read some of these specific discs last year.
After some experimentation I realized that the discs that DO work seem to have some of the center area filled in with extra data storage. After looking up the fact that the data on a disc starts at the center, the issue becomes clear: the machine tries to start reading at this smaller diameter and gives up without checking further out.
Is my optical drive broken or is this a problem with the OS?

There is no "extra data storage". It's just a label.
Basically, your drive detects disc insertion, attempts to read the disc, and doesn't get a useful result. It concludes that the disc is damaged or incompatible and it spits it out. Assuming that these discs are clean and undamaged (that includes the label side), here's what could be going on
    (1) With age, the drive's laser beam can no longer focus very tightly. It can still read some discs, but fails with others. Unfortunately, you cannot check this unless you're technically inclined and have an oscilloscope. If your drive is 5 years or older, this is a distinct possibility.
    (2) Dust or other particles can settle on the drive's lens; this scatters the laser beam, with the same effect as in (1). You cannot check this with the naked eye, but you can try to fix it. There are special cleaning discs designed for this purpose. I cannot recommend any brand or model, but you can find them in them in the usual places (electronics stores, Amazon, etc). Make sure to read reviews of other users before buying and using such a disc.
    (3) Manufactured optical discs usually have a metal reflecting layer. When correctly manufactured, such a disc lasts a long time. But recordable media (CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, etc) employ a dye, which, even when new, has less contrast between 'pits' and 'lands'. In time, this contrast fades even more, so eventually the disc becomes unreadable and the data is lost. There can be considerable variation in the durability of recordable media. Some cheap, low quality discs can become unreadable even within a year.
So, first check your media. Are the unreadable discs factory-made or recordable media? If the drive has problems with factory-made discs, first, make sure that the discs are good (other drives can read them); if they are, try cleaning your drive. If cleaning your drive hasn't worked, then it may be time to replace it with a new drive.

  • User permission issue in connecting to Oracle using java in Cent OS

    Hi ,
I am facing a peculiar issue and since I am new to Cent OS, I hope somebody can help me.
I am using Cent OS 4.2 and I installed Oracle client 10.2 in cent os 4.2.
I am having a java application which connects to Oracle server in another Linux system using Oracle OCI driver which comes along with Oracle client
I have a user called user1 which belongs to group group1 as primary group and my application runs under this user user1.
This user is a member of oinstall group (which is the group for oracle uesr which has access to oracle client directories/files)
But when my application tries to connect to Oracle server, I am getting connectivity error saying "Oracle driver not found" or "cannot load libocijdbc10.so". All environment variables like ORACLE_HOME, PATH,CLASSPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH are set properly.
The permissions to Oracle folder/files are rwx for owner(oracle user) , rx for group(oinstall) and none for others
    What we observed are
    1. When the application is start under root user, it works
    2. When we give rx permission to others, it works
    3. When we make oinstall group as the primary group for my user user1, it works
    My questions here
    1. Why it is not working even though my user user1 is a member of oinstall group
    2. Why it is working when I make oinstall as the primary group
    3. Is there any difference in security policy of RHEL and Cent OS
    4. How can I access libraries from multiple folders which created by different user and belongs to different groups, if this is the case
I never faced this issue in RHEL4
Hope some body can help me.
    Regards
    Sunil

  • End user permission ignored

    Hello,
I have a problem with an end user permission that seems to get ignored: I wanted to demonstrate the usage of the end user permission and assigned a role to a User (for simplicity's sake as an entry point, no worksets, pages etc. involved) and enabled end user permission on the role for that particular user.
Now when that user logs in he gets to see the according entry in the navigation bar as expected. However if I disable the end user permission, log out and again log in the user, he stills sees the link. The end user permission setting is simply ignored. Can someone shed light onto this, could there be something wrong with the installation)?
I don't think this is an issue of permission inheritance (the role permissions are set explicitly anyway) or overlapping permissions due to membership in several groups - the user is only member of the single standard  group 'authenticated users'.
    Regards,
    Sebastian
P.S. What's the use of a role assignment to a user without end user permission anyway (I mean why the option)? What happens if you don't add permissions on a Role for a certain user at all (I tried it, but the effect is the same as described above - end user permission seem to be irrelevant)?

    Hi Robert,
thanks for your answer and for the link (and I thought I had read everything). I am not so sure however if I really understand the term 'runtime environment' for a user. I thought runtime vs. design-time meant the difference between the content a user sees when he is actually using the portal and the content an administrator has access to in the portal content catalog, i.e. a meta-environment accessible only through certain tools like the permission editor or similar.
I don't understand what you want to express with "<i>It's used to restrict ... end user runtime environment</i>" and why the "Page Personalization" is an example.
I realize that for roles the availability for a user is solely defined by the assignment of that role to the user - end user permissions have no effect on this. Confusing, because I tought this availability (i.e. showing links in the toplevel or detailed navigation) was what was meant by 'runtime environment' but I seem to be wrong here.
The docu says "<i>for roles the end user permission setting does enable you to define which users/groups/roles are able to preview the role content using the portal design-time tools</i>". Again, I am confused, I thought this was exactly the meaning of design-time environment.
Great if you or someone else could comment on this..
    Regards,
    Sebastian
