Can OSX Server, et al, handle this website's load?

I looked through this forum and the one on Xserve and couldn't find a topic like this.
The site is being converted from an obscure programming language to PHP/MySQL. In functionality, it will resemble a Craig's List for college students. Lots of database interaction. Very few graphics except for multiple small banner ad deliveries on each page. Lots of email interaction generated by a form at the site.
We're planning on picking up a new Xserve, dropping a couple of those 15k rpm drives the Apple Store sells into it, and boosting the RAM to 4gb (?).
What I'd like to know is the following:
1. Can someone give any real world numbers on the performance of OSX/Apache 2.2/MySQL and said hardware? Can the database handle 100k, 500k, 1M records? Are there general rules for how many page views per day that can be served? (Bandwidth should not be an issue...I believe we are allocated 1TB per month, and as I indicated, graphic content is low.)
2. If the server and software can handle X, would is the next logical step beyond X? I realize that this may never happen, but I do need to ask the question for my own peace of mind. In other words, how does one expand beyond the fastest hardware and what I perceive to be as the best software solution?
Right now the site is at zero, and everyone dreams of building the next MySpace or YouTube. If it flops or just never generates tons of traffic, I can figure out how to handle that. My concern is if it does go in the other direction, so, any tips/suggestions would certainly be welcomed. Thank you in advance.
Rob

> Can someone give any real world numbers on the performance of OSX/Apache 2.2/MySQL and said hardware
In most cases bandwidth will be your limiting factor more than CPU resource.
1TB might sound like a lot - and it is if you're doing mostly text-based content - but on a typical traffic sine-curve it equates to about 300kbps. Your server is more than capable of handling that without breaking a sweat (database schema notwithstanding).
All my servers are running multi-megabits per second and I still have room to grow.
1 million rows in a MySQL database is not large. I have MySQL databases using hundreds of millions of rows. Beware of your database schema (query optimization and indexes will make a BIG difference to performance).
The next logical step as far as scaling would be multiple front-end web servers talking to the database server. There are numerous solutions for load balancing traffic across multiple servers, depending on $$s and flexibility needs.
The biggest factor is going to be in choosing the language to write the site in. PHP isn't necessarily the best choice. You need to be very careful (and not an 'average' PHP programmer) to be able to eke the best performance out of a busy site (esp. when it comes to database interactions - you need to cache the data in the app rather than hitting the database for every single page hit).
There's nothing wrong with PHP - just be aware of its limitations and be prepared to deal with it (whether through code optimization or another language switch).

  • Why can't I get this website to load properly?

    www.wzzm13.com A local news website.
I can access it with Internet explorer, or my android tablet with no problem.
I cannot access it with Firefox, (32) or Nightly (64) and I have removed both, wiped out everything to do with them, reinstalled them with NO ad-ons, and still the problem exists.
Basically the problem is, I can get to the website, but I cannot click on any of the news articles. They will NOT work. The articles are "pop up" screens. I have the pop up blocker turned off. All advertisement blockers turned off.. and yet something in fire fox is still blocking this website from loading properly.
Fire fox 3.1 (latest version) same with Nightly. I HATE having to use explorer.
Anyone have any idea? Ive tried everything listed here. Clearing cashe, cookies, everything.. still the problem exists ONLY for fire fox.
    Thanks.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • OSX Server 10.6.3 - (Multiple) Website hosting via Server Admin

Has anyone else experienced/had this problem? I am posting this hear in hopes that someone else has experienced this as well and may know how to correct/resolve this problem.
We currently have purchased a collaboration software I have installed and I am running via OSX. The files are stored in /Library/WebServer/Documents/collab. OSX comes with a default website built in at /Library/WebServer/Documents. I intend to install the collab website in anticipation of adding more sites in the future and possibly utilizing the default OSX web services as well. I have set up our internal DNS server to route collab.company.com to the internal ip address of our OSX server. The default OSX webpage is currently hosted on port 80, I am running our collab site on port 8x (we are already hosting websites on a different server on port 80, and the router can only forward port requests to a single ip address).
With this configuration, if I enter the address of collab.company.com, I get the default OSX server running on port 80. If I enter collab.company.com/collab, I then get our collab website (on port 8x). Essentially I want collab.company.com to open the collab website, not the OSX website. What is odd is, it seems that if I uncheck the default OSX webpage in server admin and disable it, change the collab site to port 80 as a test and go to collab.company.com I get a failed connection that the site is down or doesn't exist, like it is offline. It seems almost as if OSX is completely shutting down the entire directory of /Library/WebServer/Documents which is where the collab website exits inside of (Documents/collab). If I re-enable the default OSX website, then both websites become live again.
So I guess my question is, is there a different structure/architecture that should be followed to prevent this behaviour? If so, how do I get multiple websites installed and configured properly in server admin to respond to their appropriate dns requests. I also forgot to mention for my collab site entry in server admin I have the host name in the general tab as collab.company.com, as well as the alias collab.company.com, but when I enter collab.company.com I am getting the default OSX site.

I agree, this seems to make sense in theory, but here is the result I am getting.
I have my internal (not my osx server) dns server containing a host entry of collab.company.com = 192.168.1.xx. I have a virtual host entry in OSX in the aliases area (correct?) of collab.company.com for my collab site. However, whenever I enter the url in my browser of collab.company.com, I keep getting the default Mac OSX Server website page. I even put an alias in the OSX server site of mainpage to try and differenciate it, but it doesn't seem to take or matter.
So once again, in theory I think "oh, just uncheck the enable button next to the default OSX website", I uncheck it, and then both of my websites are offline, or appear to be? For my collab site, the link redirects, but I get the error page.
    Safari:
    Not Found
The requested URL /collab/public/index.php was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) PHP/5.3.1 Server at collab.company.com Port 80
    Google Chrome:
Oops! This link appears to be broken.
Thing is, I even changed my collab site to be running on port 80 as well as a test. I check enable for my osx default page, and they are both back online. If I change the default osx sites port to say 87 or something, and leave the collab at 80, I then get the same bad request messages etc. If I put the osx site back to port 80, they both work.

  • Can anyone describe the workflow for this website nav?

    Here's the url:
    http://www.hypertemplates.com/templates/11195.html
I'm trying to create a similar nav system for my website, I'm
not concerned with the search features, but I just want the top nav
portion to have all the elements "fly into place" after loading,
then have the main pic have some animation that loops with animated
buttons such as the one in this template. I know this is a
subjective question, since there's probably many ways to accomplish
the same task, but I was curious to hear how different people would
go about building such a thing before I start. Also, does anyone
know where to get some simple, non-obnoxious click sounds for
buttons (kind of like the ones in this template, maybe even more
    non-obtrusive)?
Thanks everyone, have an awesome new year!

Here's the basic gist of how I'd do it:
    1) Create your nav, make sure each button is it's own symbol.
    2) Select all the nav items, right click, distribute to
    layers
    3) Select all the keyframes for each nav item layer on frame
1, and move to some location where the nav will start to fly in
    4) Still dealing with the nav item layers, select a column of
frames say 10-20 frames beyond where the keyframes are, press F6 to
    add keyframes
    5) You now have two keyframes, start and end point. Scrub the
timeline to where the first keyframe is, and
    a) Move them to the right, say 50px
    b) In Properties panel, change the Color mode to Alpha, and
set to 0 or a small value, like 10
    6) Now scrub the timeline to where the end keyframes are,
select all the nav items on stage, and make sure it appears as you
will want it to(since you already added the keyframe, it should be
100 alpha and in the right place)
    7) Select a column of frames between the start and end
keyframes for the nav item layers
    8) In the properties panel, for Tween select Motion
    9) Add some ease
    10) At this point all nav items zoom in at once. Now simply
go through the timeline and take each tween and move it to the
right a few frames, so one will come in after the other
For the looping animation picture, put some animation inside
of a MovieClip symbol, it will loop when on the main timeline. Now
you can just fade in/animate in the MovieClip initially.

  • Can anyone see the video at this website?

    Hi folks,
I'm using Safari 5.0.3 and I'm trying to watch coverage (live) of the Egyptian protests. When I go to this webpage I can hear the report but I can't see the video. My home page is www.cincinnati.com and on it they embed video clips. (I think embed is the right word.) When I click on them, a new page opens but with no video. I've tested Java, QuickTime, Flash and all are working according to their respective tests on their websites.

  • Dns server issues with business catalyst, website not loading

    Hi there,
Trying to upload a new website and it has disappeared saying that the DNS lookup failed. Have checked settings under site management and all looks correct but its still not working any help would be great.

May I have the site URL, so that I may look at the DNS settings?

  • OSX Server Website DNS problems

I wanted to have a server  so I decided to get the mac mini server. We want to set up a small website with simple web services running on python and ruby.
Now I'm trying to set it up to have a website connected to our domain (olm.io), but the domain name doesn't forward to the mac mini server.
I believe the server is set up correctly. The router is set up to port forward incoming connections on port 80 to the server. To test that, connections to the ip 190.160.227.68 retrieves the server and shows up the test website.
I entered our ISP dns servers and also set up a dns server on the osx server.
From outside this shows from outside:
    $ dig www.olm.io
    ; <<>> DiG 9.9.2-P1 <<>> www.olm.io
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 20417

From inside the network this shows up:
    $ dig www.olm.io
    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.3-P1 <<>> www.olm.io
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; Got answer:

Also checking the hostname says its ok:
    $ sudo changeip -checkhostname
    Primary address     = 192.168.0.10
    Current HostName    = www.olm.io
    DNS HostName        = www.olm.io
Ok so from the inside of our network the website shows up, and from outside when looking at the public ip of the network the website also shows up.
What I'm missing is that when anybody types www.olm.io our website appears.
At one time I tried setting up Google public dns service, just to try it, but now it seems to be stuck referring to google 8.8.8.8 server,
    $ nslookup 190.160.227.68

    Non-authoritative answer:
    68.227.160.190.in-addr.arpa     name = pc-68-227-160-190.cm.vtr.net.
Authoritative answers can be found from:
    $ nslookup www.olm.io
    Server:         8.8.8.8
    Address:        8.8.8.8#53
    ** server can't find www.olm.io: NXDOMAIN
I believe the problem is on the domain set up, which is as follows:
    Registrar
    Organization Name :
    NIC.io
    Primary Nameserver
    Name Server:
    ns00.olm.io
    IPv4 Address:

    Thanks for the help

You will have two sets of DNS servers, your public DNS and the DNS running on your local network.  If your external DNS is getting to your servers, then that's probably working.  If you are getting the public IP address from your local network, then your gateway-router needs to "reflect" that address, or you'll need to configure local DNS services (OS X Server needs that in any case) to provide the local IP address for the public DNS name.
Put another way, read the article cited earlier and make sure your local DNS is correct.  You can test for most of the common network and DNS configuration errors with the following harmless, diagnostic Terminal.app command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
...and this will tell you about the configuration, and whether no changes are required, or about the various errors that might be detected.
You can see what IP address you're getting with the following Terminal.app command:
    dig +short oc.example.com
...or whatever DNS host name you're using.  You'll get either the public IP address (which if you use on the local network, your gateway-router needs to be able to detect that and run the connections back into your network) or your internal local network address.
Your local network clients will want to reference your local DNS server.
Do read the article cited earlier, too.

  • Monitoring Bandwidth usage for individual hosted sites on osx server?

Does anyone know of a good way to monitor bandwidth consumption for individual websites hosted on osx server?

Part of this answer depends on server configuration details that you haven't provided.
Are you looking for 'bandwidth' as in total bytes transferred for any given site? or are you looking for a megabits-per-second network throughput calculation?
Are your various sites logging to separate log files? or a single, unified log file?
If you want a total bytes transferred calculation, then that data is stored in the standard log files, so a simple parser that adds up the response sizes would suffice - it will tell you that x number of bytes/megabytes were transferred.
A bandwitch utilization graph (e.g. mbps) is a little trickier, though.
Are your sites running on the same port, using name-based virtual hosting to separate the traffic, or are they running on different ports?
If different ports then you may be able to implement some kind of network monitoring, but if they're all running on the same port (e.g. 80) then that doesn't work - you're down to Apache logging.
The standard Apache logs, though, don't include enough data to calculate a bandwidth graph. It does include timestamps of requests, and the total bytes in the reply, but that's not enough - the timestamp is only accurate to the second, and there's no indication of duration... for example, a 1mb web page served in 1 second equates to 8mbps, but that same file transferred in 30 seconds is only about 273kbps.
Since the transfer time is required to calculate the bandwidth utilization for the site, you'll need to amend your logging to include the transfer size. You'll need to enable mod_logio and add the %O (output bytes) and %T (request time) variables to your log format. Only then can you calculate the bits-per-second throughput of your site.

  • SMB connection attempt switches to WebDAV unexpectedly when connecting to OSX server

With Windows 8.1, I can connect to my OSX 10.9.5 Server share point by opening File Explorer, typing:  \\<fqdn> and hitting return.  I will be prompted for server credentials and when I enter them, I will see the share point.
With Window 10, if I do the same thing, instead of seeing the shareppoint, I see a blank Windows Explorer screen with "This folder is empty".
I contacted Apple with a tcpdump from this and they said that Windows 10 is attempting to connect over HTTP instead of SMB:
ACTION: Windows is handling the connection incorrectly by attempting to use Webdav instead of SMB.
STATUS: As with any other 3rd party integration cases, we attempt to identify an issue as either an issue to a 3rd party product, or to identify and isolate the issue in
    the Apple product.
In packet 64 the client sends an SMB 1 negotiate request (expected).  In packet 66 the server responds in SMB 2 with the SMB 2 features it supports
(expected).  In packet 67 the client sends the SMB 2 negotiation request (expected).  In packet 69 the server responds with the SMB2 negotiation response (expected).
Normally at this point the client will send an authentication attempt in SMB 2 using one of the authentication types provided by the server in packets 66 or 69.  Instead
the Windows client sends a tcp connection reset in packet 70 (unexpected).  In packet 74 the windows client initiates a connection over HTTP (extremely unexpected).
The above pattern repeats several times in the tcpdump.
The mac server never presented any HTTP information in the SMB packets.  This appears to be a purely Windows 10 issue.
If I connect to the server by typing:  \\<fqdn>\sharepoint  -- then I do connect, but the OSX server does not indicate this is an SMB connection, so it must be a WebDav connection (which would be incredibly wrong...)
If this is a settings issue in Windows 10 that is forcing an HTTP connection over an SMB attempt -- can somebody point me where to look?

According to Apple, it appears that if the SMB server (in this case Mac OS X 10.10.1) has port 443 open, Windows 10 attempts to connect over that instead of over the SMB port.
    Anybody looking at this one?
If you want someone to look at this you need to file it using the Feedback
