Can RMAN 10g Keep Log of Backup History?

hi experts,
I use RMAN to backup my 10g database on a Windows Server.
Not using Recovery Catalog.
Database IS in Archivelog mode.
I have the settings configured so that backups become obsolete after 10 days.
** But the auditors want to be able to see evidence that we were doing daily backups - so we need to keep 180 days of "history" even though the actual backup files have long since been deleted.
??How can I accomplish this? Is setting CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME = 180 a good optiion?
Thanks, John

Steve, not sure what may have prompted some of your questions but I will answer those that I can.
No, the idea of a log is not new to me.
Sure I keep the backups for the control file in the FRA. I also have the control file on 2 different physical disks so that if a disk fails or if I accidentally delete one, the other is still available. Yes I have AUTOBACKUP enabled. Any type of backup triggers a backup of the control file as well. I was able to restore the control file as recently as 2 weeks ago.
I don't use a Recovery catalog because I dont yet fully understand them. At this time, I'm more comfortable not using one.
I'm sure there are bettter backup strategies for 10g. But I've been able to restore when I needed to..... so far.
That said... I'm always ready to learn and make improveemnts.
Thanks, John

  • I need help finding a backup history?

i need help figuring out how to restore my ipod  its back up but i was wondering if there is some how a feature where i can find like a back up history so i can restore my ipod to a backup from a different date instead of the last backup any ideas? I accidentally jacked up my ipod and i need to see if i can go to a sort of backup history from apple so i can restore my ipod from a different date instead of the LAST back up

This shows what I see if I use the Edit > Preferences > Devices in iTunes.
(Use Alt or Ctrl+B if you don't see the menu bar.)
It shows just one backup for each of four devices (I don't normally update at this machine). As I recall if there were more, the additional backups would contain the restore date as part of the left-hand column.
I suspect you're not going to like what you find.

  • Where can I file the log file generate by RMAN using EM 10g.

    Hi
I trying to find the log file that is generated using RMAN invoked from EM.
I can only see the file using Internet Explorer with the URL:
    em/console/database/rec/bkpMgmt?skey=257&type=oracle_database&target=isatprod.dla_dns.com&event=showJobDe
But I need to find where the log files are located in the filesystem because in other server I will not have EM with OC4J.
    Thanks.
    Juan.

When use OEM for 10g and choose the option / Maintance/Backup Reports
I can see information of all my backups, that includes:
Backup Name - Start Time - Time Taken - Status - Type- Output Devices - Input Size .....
When I click on Status field I can see the log file of this Backup.
(whe click in status one URL will be invoked ,something like below URL)
    http://10.5.0.86:1158/em/console/database/rec/bkpMgmt?skey=259&type=oracle_database&target=isatprod.dla_dns.com&event=showJobDet&objType=jobDtl
So the log file exist in any place for every backup made , the problem that I can not find it.
The log has approximately 500 lines, if you want I can send you by email the log.
Currently I don't have a repository catalog, I use a control file as repository.
I think that 500 lines of log is not include in any dynamic performance views.
    Thanks
    Juan

  • Is RMAN only way to take backup and delete Archive Logs?

    On primary db:
    ===============
    OS: Windows 2003 server 32-bit
    Oracle: Oracle 10g (10.2.0.1.0) R2 32-bit
    On Physical standby db:

    OS: Windows 2003 server 32-bit
    Oracle: Oracle 10g (10.2.0.1.0) R2 32-bit
Data Guard just configured. Archive Logs are properly being shipped to standby db. Is RMAN only way to take backup and delete Archive Logs from both primary and standby db? What other command can be used?
    Thanks

No, but anything else is way more work. Without using RMAN you would have to find another way to keep track of applied logs.
RMAN make this very simple :
RMAN> CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO APPLIED ON ALL STANDBY;Using another method would be like using the handle of your screwdriver as a hammer.

  • Keeping backup history after reinstalling Yosemite

Can I reinstall (clean) Yosemite and keep my backup history?

Have you tried making a backup of your main.db file then try viewing it with Skype log viewer or Sqlite database viewer?
    http://nirsoft.net/utils/skype_log_view.html
    http://sqlitebrowser.org/
    https://suurjaak.github.io/Skyperious/
If the data is there you should be able to read it.  If there is some corruption in the database file you can try using Skyperious to see if it can repair it or join it with another empty database file (cleared history).  In any case you may want to backup your %appdata%/Skype folder before attempting such things.
If you have root access to your phone you could also try backing up that main.db file or possibly transplanting that information over to your desktop if the data is missing by replacing the current file or using Skyperious to merge the old data.  Remember when you perform clean installs of your OS your Skype history does not go with you.  It would be best to retrieve that main.db file from before you reloaded the OS via a planned backup.  What could be happening is the data could be attempting to sync from your phone but eventually only pulls/limits the information from the cloud (up to 30 days).

Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to [url tahiti.oracle.com]tahiti.oracle.com.
Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    <b><i><u>BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION</u></i></b>
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth. They are <b><i><u>reference</b></i></u> manuals. Just get familiar with <b><i><u>what</b></i></u> is there to <b><i><u>be</b></i></u> referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Take a look in your alert log. One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.

  • How can I keep logged in on Facebook even tho I've cleared everything?

I've cleared all history, cookies, cache & still can't keep logged into facebook. Everytime I scroll down or click on something I get the rectangle with "must be logged in to facebook". I relog in and sometimes get the same message. It doesn't happen to me in IE.
    I'm using 3.6.12

    This should fix the issue:
Special thanks to Roger Wilmut for providing the detailed instructions on the website below.
    https://discussions.apple.com/people/Roger%20Wilmut1
    1. Shut down Mail.  Next, deselect "iCloud Mail" in the iCloud preferences pane in System Preferences FIRST.  If not, it will automatically pre-populate the wrong p9X.mail.me.com server names again overwriting all your work.
    2. Now restart Mail and go to preferences.  If "iCloud" mail is still showing, select it and click on the "-" at the bottom to remove it.
    3. Now follow the instructions here:http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html (disregard that this is for Snow Leopard, it DOES work on Lion) paying attention to the use of the "option" key when needed to avoid Mail automatically "creating" the account and closing out the preferences window.
    4. Ensure the correct server names of "imap.mail.me.com and smtp.mail.me.com" are still there and close Mail preferences and now select "get mail".  It may prompt one last time for your iCloud password, enter it and you are done.
    Good Luck.

how to disable the local snapshot:
1.click the time machine menubar icon
    2.open TM preference...
    3.Option...
    4.uncheck the ’create local snapshot‘
This will keep normal (remote) Time Machine back ups on, but disable local ones. It will also delete the current local cache automatically.
    or
copy and paste into terminal :
    sudo tmutil disablelocal

I can't get my iCloud to backup anything on my mac book pro. It allows me to log in, etc. but it doesn't allow me to do anything. Please help me out Apple experts!

Make sure you actually have a 2nd Generation Apple TV and that it's on the same Wi-Fi network as your iPad 2. Using your Apple TVs on screen menu, go to Settings > AirPlay and make sure that it's turned on.
On your iPad 2, double tap the Home Button to bring up the App Tray/Switcher. The screen should slide up and you will see some app icons there. Slide them to the right and you should see a Speaker icon, a brightness slider, some iPod music control buttons, and a button with a square and a triangle at the bottom. This button is the Airplay button. Tap on it.
You should see two choices. iPad and Apple TV. If you choose Apple TV, there is a switch that says mirroring. Slide the switch and your content on your iPad should now be mirrored on the TV through the Apple TV. (Some apps don't allow mirroring but most do.)

Doesn't sound like much of a backup plan, but why not just wipe your backup drive and make a fresh backup of your current system? Be easier and safer,

Seems some one removed the log directory.. check the log directory as specified in the script. and create that one if not exist.

Can time capsule keep backup files that are removed from my computer? I am a photographer and have a ton of files that take too much space on my computer. I'd like to have a backup of them but keep them off of my computer. Does time capsul allow this?

files you remove from your computer will be removed from your time machine backups sooner or later.
better store important files on an external HD which, if connected directly to your computer and given enough space on your TC, can be backed up using time machine.
