Can't access a managed user account in system preferences

Hi I've recently upgraded to M.L  and migrated everything from my son's old computer to this new one.  His account is still showing in the System preferences but now it has an orange check mark next to it and says it's a managed account.  There are some minor parental controls on there currently.
In system preference, I cannot select his user account.  Any ideas why and how I remedy this??

Try repairing permissions and ACLs on that user.
The Repair Permissions run from Disk Utility in your Applications doesn't touch anything in any of the user folders, so startup holding command-r keys into your Recovery Volume.
From the menu bar choose Utilities then select Terminal.
At the prompt type resetpassword
Press return
The Password reset utility will launch (do not reset password)
Instead, click your Mac hard drive.
Then from the drop-down select the user account you want to repair. At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac.

  • Unable to access Login Items for Accounts in System Preferences

I've created an image for computers at my school. When I go into System Preferences>Accounts, and authenticate, I am unable to access the Login Items tab. The tab isn't grayed out or anything. It's just that when I click on it, nothing happens. It stays on the Password tab. The only way I can get out of it is to quit System Preferences. Any ideas?

If you are connecting to a OS X Server, make sure that you're not managing Login Items (Click on Preferences in WorkGroup Manager, then Login, then the Items tab). I had the same problem and setting that preference to Never solved it for me.

  • Can't access Keyboard and Mouse panel of System Preferences

I can't access the Keyboard and Mouse panel of System Preferences. System Preferences starts up fine but when I click to access the Keyboard and Mouse panel, System Preferences indicates in the title bar of the window that it is loading the panel but it never does.
Does anyone have an idea about how to fix this? Thank you.

    Hello Brian:
I would trash the preference file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) and then restart the computer.

  • Can't add or delete User Profiles in System Preferences

I'm trying to connect to my school's wireless network, which is now using WPA2 Enterprise encryption and I need to change my User Profile to connect. As far as I can tell, I've done this several times, but my new profile doesn't show up and the old two don't go away (which I have deleted from the 802.1X page).
What do I need to do to get my preferences to work correctly?

  • User Accounts in System Preferences Missing

    Hi, first post for me.
I did a search but couldn't find anyone having the same problem as me.
    I have a 3.06Ghz iMac with 10.5.6
When I swictehd it on today the first thing I noticed was the little photo accompanying my user name had disappeared. So I clicked System Preferences and hit Accounts. It says as the top 'Loading Accounts...' but it just waits. When I click it again it just goes to a blank screen. Nothing is there at all.
I went to User/Library/Caches and deleted the com.apple.preferences.cache but nothing has changed.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
If it makes ANY difference I was having a tiny problem with Spotlight yesterday so used Onyx to tidy things up, but it seemed fine after using it.
    Thanks in advance.
    Massimo

Well... couldn't find anyone with the same trouble I was having. Decided to get myself a removable HDD and backed up with Time Machine. Then did an Archive and Install. Has fixed the problem.
I was surprised at how EVERYTHING was saved over from my previous set up to the new one.
    Thanks.

  • Missing user accounts in system preference pane 10.6.1?

(I hope this isn't posted under another topic already..)
After reading a post on another site about missing user data in Snow Leopard (http://bit.ly/3wf3v7), I decided to do a little digging on my own machine to see if I'm experiencing any of the same issues..
First of all I'm not readily experiencing any particular bugs since upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6.1, but I did notice the following:
-my usual admin user account (me) did not show any other user accounts on the machine in the system preference pane.
-I have fast user switching on, and when I select it the account name at the upper right corner of the screen, it shows all of the accounts that the sys pref pane does not.
-a quick look at my finder reveals on the root level that all of my user accounts are intact as well.
-I switched to another admin account on the machine, and it loaded up fine– upon opening the sys pref on the other admin account, I was able to see all of the other active accounts on the machine in the accounts pane.
-note: the guest account is deactivated, and I've not logged into a guest account since upgrading to 10.6.1.
So my question is: why doesn't my primary user account (obviously an admin account) see the other active accounts in my sys pref accounts pane, but my other admin accounts do? Not a huge deal, but at some point I'll need to make account changes from my user account in regards to the other user accounts and I'll need that functionality at that point.
-note: I've lost no data to my knowledge and I have a TM backup drive active.
Any thoughts from my fellow Mac Geniuses?

Creating an account named abc did not bring back my previous accounts. I had installed Snow Leopard on my iMac several months ago. My hard drive was damaged by SnowLeopard family pack install disk that I was using to update my daughter's Macbook on Friday. When I opened my Mac in target disk mode, there was no system folder on the hard drive. I started to install 10.5.8 so I could use my iMac-didn't get it finished before going to work. Bought a new Snow Leopard install disk on the way home, cancelled the uncompleted install of 10.5.8, and the iMac booted up like a new machine.
All my files are there, but the only user available is the one created while booting up. Migration assistant doesn't see the user accounts on the iMac hard drive.

  • Can't access dot mac sync options in system preferences

    Hi,
I noticed that my iMac (G5 - 10.5) was slowing down horribly. In the Activity Monitor it turned out that the dotmacsyncclient was using up 80-90% CPU. Syncing did work. When I wanted to check to .Mac setting I couldn't get into the Sync page. System Pref just crashed.
So I decided to delete all the sync settings from the Library (SyncServ). After a reboot the system seems to works just fine. The syncclient doesn't use up the cPU anymore so that's good.
But I still cannot access the .Mac sync options. System Prefs keep crashing. So not I cannot reset my sycing preferences!
Anyone has any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Marco

Well, it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this issue too. This started cropping up after the last major update to Leopard. I cannot reset .Mac sync services either in System Preferences or through the icon in the uppper right hand bar of the screen. Each time gets me a spinning beach ball which hangs the system and causes me to do a Force Quit.
Force Quit always shows it to be a non-responsive program. All other aspects are fine. I've even gone into iSync and reset the preferences there with no apparent change. I have no ideas on this one and have been searching for an answer myself - hopefully someone (or Apple) will have one...crash logs are not giving me anything to point to either...

  • Safari can't establish secure connection in parental controls managed user account

    Hi,
Safari can't establish any secure connection in parental controls managed user account. Normal web sites open OK, but secure connections, like Gmail which requires https doesn't work. This is what I get instead:
Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false& continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3Fui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&bsv=llya694 le36z&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&from=login” because Safari can’t establish a secure connection to the server “www.google.com”.
Any ideas how to overcome this?

Do you have anti virus software installed, or Peer Guardian?
"https note: For websites that use SSL encryption (the URL will usually begin with https), the Internet content filter is unable to examine the encrypted content of the page. • How come nobody can log in to a user account?

10.6 Server functioning well in all configured aspects. Did a software update. I don't think it was an important one, perhaps Safari and iTunes which I did just because I always do all the updates. Then, I used Disk Utility to repair permissions. Again, just because some say that you should, and it has never caused me any problems.
Instant disaster! Now nobody can log in to a user account to access any network home folders. All users can log in and access the Wiki service as normal. And I can log in via ARD and use Server Admin and Workgroup Manager. But no luck with users accessing the homes.
I suspect inappropriate permissions at or near the top of my Users directory, but I am not sure. First of all, what may have happened, and then how can I solve this problem???

I have no idea what may have happened (surely nothing SHOULD have), and I'm pretty much a novice (especially with NetBoot), but did you check in...
    - Workgroup Manager: User/'Basic' tab/"User can" access account
    - Server Admin: NetBoot (and NFS or Web) is running
To check permissions 'at or near the top of the Users directory', use ServerAdmin/AFP/Sharepoints/Browse then click on the permissions tab and double-click the user/group name. Or select the user/group and click the gear icon below for more ways to cause trouble!
Apologies if you knew all this already.

  • Managing User Accounts

    Hi,
I am reviewing current security policies in my organisation.
Developers currently log on to schemas using the same username and password and don't have individual accounts.
These accounts were created during an initially open policy but I have pared this back to least privilege.
Is it enough to use these single accounts with least privilege or should I set up individual user accounts for each developer and then use roles to manage collaboration? My understanding is that individual accounts best serve auditing but when I audit I can still see the osuser (we all have our own machines).
What way are other DBA's managing user accounts?

This approach I follow most of the time. I find it a reasonable balance of flexibility for developers and quality control for me.
For an application (data-owning) schema, I am OK with developers having that account's password in a development database, and working directly in it. They are responsible for keeping track of what changes they make, and coordinating with each other. I maintain a different password for the application schema in each environment. In other test environments, and in production, the password for that schema is not given to them, so any changes must be scripted and applied in a controlled manner, ensuring everything needed to deploy a change is in place early in the life cycle. In those controlled environments, developers' personal IDs may have read access to the data in the application schema, so they can research and troubleshoot as needed.

Can I access music from multiple accounts on one cpu

    Here's one option: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12366
But frankly you'd be better off creating unique user accounts on the computer and having seperate iTunes libraries for each user as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1495

How do I access my encrypted User Account files from my Back Up hard drive?  Time Machine  was used to create the back up disk; File Vault was used to encrypt the files.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into

  • I'm unable to grant full access to 2nd user account. What am I missing

While our MacBook Pro is out for repairs, I need a way to process my wife's emails and other business. So I'm trying to set up a 2nd user account for my wife on our iMac (running 10.7.5 Lion). Unfortunately, every step I've tried has failed to grant permission for her account to access the iMac desktop or launch applications other than Safari.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. I created an account with my wife's name and password under Users & Groups in System Preferences.
    2. In her Users & Groups account, I granted her Adminstrator privileges.
    3. In the Sharing folder in System Preferences, I selected all the folders except those labeled "remote" and "xgrid" (whatever that is). I granted Read & Write privileges for each one. These included two Desktop folders, and I added the folder for Applications.
    4. I made sure File Sharing was turned on, along with Printer Sharing, Web Sharing, Screen Sharing, Internet Sharing, etc.
    5. Under Sharing Options, I noted a checkmark in the box labeled "Share files and folders using AFP", although the "number of users connected" was 0. I left that alone.
    6. Because several sharing choices were listed as "blocked by firewall," I turned the Firewall setting off.
Despite all this, when I log in as my wife, I cannot launch any major applications except Safari, whether from the Dock or Applications folder. In fact, most of the apps in the folder are grayed out. And when I try to access the Desktop, Other Files, and various other folders, I receive a message that her account "does not have permission to see the contents." Why not? What have I overlooked?
This is becoming an urgent problem, because there's business that must be conducted. I have had similar problems with the iMac from the start, when it refused to accept me as the rightful owner of files that were transferred from our older Mac Pro dwesktop. Yikes!
Any help on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hey thomashfrompa,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with iTunes for Windows. The following article outlines the error message you are receiving and a potential resolution:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
Some Windows customers may experience installation issues while trying to install or open iTunes 11.1.4.
    Symptoms may include:
"The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer"
"iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows Error 126)”

    Resolution
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
    Check for .dll files
    1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
    2. If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    3. Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    1. Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
    2. Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    3. Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
