Can't access cluster via SQL Server Mng Studio unless node has ownership

Hi:
We have Windows and SQL 2008 R2 in a 2 node cluster. Failover and failback work like a dream. All the 'lights' are green. But we can only access the cluster when we're on the node that has ownership. I've deleted all DNS entries and successfully recreated
them via ipconfig /registerDns from each node, shutting down, restarting the actual cluster and taking the application and service offline then back on line. All DNS records got recreated perfectly. Cluster error log doesn't show anything when we
can't connect either. We can also ping all IPs, Hostnames and Clustername.

Hi g_machuca,
According to your description, you want to implement failover and failback in SQL Server cluster environment. We need to verify if The cluster group containing SQL Server can be configured for automatic failback to the primary node when it becomes available
again. By default, this is set to off. First you set a preferred owner for the SQL Server service in a clustered environment; To ensure the service or application automatically moves to the correct node, select “Allow Failback” under the Failover tab. .
Auto failback saves you from having to make this change manually; however it will restart the SQL Services when it automatically fails back. Or if you don’t want to configure auto failback you’ll want to make sure that you manually fail the services
back to the more powerful node after the system has come back online.
There are details about failover cluster allows automatic failback, you can review the following articles.

  • Can't connect to MSSQL-server via SQL Server Management Studio. Noone else can utilize the server either

    Suddenly the mSSQL-server has stopped working, and the application doesn't have any connection to it.
    Also, I cant connect locally via SQL Server Management Studio.
    Any ideas on where to start?
    Have SQL Server 2008 R2

    Try DAC first:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178068(v=sql.105).aspx
    If that fails, go to Configuration Manager and restart the server.

  • Can't Remove Datasets From SQL Server Management Studio Restore Database Dialog

    Hello,
    I am trying to restore a database in MS SQL 2008 R2 Management Studio on a Windows 2008 server.
    - I right click the Databases folder and choose Restore Databases.
    - I select the From device radio button as usual and click Add.
    - I specify a .bck file as usual and click OK.
    - When I return to the Restore Database dialog are two backup sets already in the "Select backup location to restore" part of the dialog that I unsuccessfully tried to restore earlier already there.
    - I can see the path to the backup set that I want to add in the "From device" field of the "Restore Database" dialog. The backup is not listed in "Select backup location to restore" as it should be.
    - I tried restarting the SQL Server service and I rebooted the server but the files were still there when I tried to do a restore.
    - There is no option to remove the extra datasets in the "Select backup location to restore" part of the dialog. I am hoping that if I can remove the extra datasets that this will resolve the problem. Does anyone have any idea how to remove them?

    Hello,
    My issue was a bit different then your screenshot. I was able to choose a backup dataset with no problem from the "Select backup devices" dialog as you show in the screenshot. At that time the "Restore Database" dialog box you show in the background had
    no backup files, you show filetest1, filetest2. However after clicking the "Add" to files were listed in the "Restore Database" dialog neither of which was the one that I was trying to add. The problem was that the wrong files were listed in the "Restore Database"
    dialog and I couldn't remove them.
    The problem turned out to be two issues. I resolved the problem as follows:
    It turned out that someone had compressed my server c:\ drive and I was not aware of it. Disk compression and SQL server have conflicts. As I had never compressed a drive I didn't know that Windows Explorer displays compressed files in blue letters. So the
    first step was to decompress the drive. Which did not fix the problem.
    What had caused the files to show up was that I had somehow created a backup with two data sets in it. It seems that when SQL Server creates a backup one of the first things it does is check the drive for the required space and create an empty backup file
    the size of the backup to reserve the disk space. It seems that I had created a file that contained space for a backup but no data with another back with data behind it. When I looked at the backup file size in explorer it was almost twice the size it should
    have been.
    I resolved the problem by changing the path of the default backup folder. I was able to do a restore from there. Afterwords the default backup folder worked and the files listed were no longer there.
    Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help.

  • How can I access the oracle/sql server jdbc driver class files from my cust

    I have a war file in which I have custom DataSource i.e mypackage.Datasource class. Its basically the need of my application. In this class we connect to datasource and link some of our programming artifacts .
    I have deployed the oracle jdbc driver and deploy my application as ear with datasources.xml in the meta inf file. Inspite of that my code fails to load the jdbc driver classes.
    Here is the extract of the code :
            Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver").newInstance();
             String url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@dataserver:1521:orcl";
            Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url, "weblims3", "labware");
            if(conn != null){
              out.println("the connection to the database have been achieved");
            out.println("conn object achived= " + conn);
    Class.forname fails in this case. I can see the ojdbc5.jar the driver jar in usr\sap\CE1\J00\j2ee\cluster\bin\ext\ojdbc5  . I even put the ojdbc.jar in web-inf/lib and application lib but does not help at all. Hope I have explained my problem clearly.
    I deployed the jdbc driver in the name of ojdbc5 .
    I am stuck here. It will be great help if anyone can help me in this. Thanks in advance.

    Bent,
    You can access the database from your Java portlet, just like from any other Java/JSP environment. Yes, you can use JDBC, as well as BC4J.
    The Discussion Forum portlet was built using BC4J, take a look at it's source to see how it was done.
    Also, check out Re: BC4J Java portlet anyone?, it contains a lot of useful information too.

  • Can I recover a damaged SQL Server 2008 database with the undamaged .mdb and .ldf files?

    Their original SQL Server was 2008, with SP unknown, but installed on D: and C: drives.  The power spike corrupted their O/S on the C:
    drive and someone reinstalled both the O/S and the SQL Server, which is now SQL 2008, SP4.  They have intact files for all system databases, both .mdb and .ldf.  Is there some way they can reconnect with the user databases using the intact copies
    of the previous system databases? I have heard that if the SQL Server is stopped, previous Master and Msdb .mdb and .ldf files moved into place and the server restarted, that any previous user database .mdb and .ldf files can be accessed by the SQL server.
    Is this the case, or are there details missing?

    Hello! try this steps
     1 Open your SQL Server Management Studio console. This application shortcut is available in the SQL Server directory in the Windows Start button.
    2  Enter the system administrator user name and password. SQL Server's administrator user name is "sa." This account is required for privileges to restore the database. If your restoring on a host provider server, use the administrator user name
    and password they supplied for your account.
     3 Right-click your database name and select "Attach." In the new window that opens, click the "Add" button to open a dialog box.
     4 Select your MDF file and press the "Ok" button. It may take several minutes to restore the database if it is a large file. Once the process is finished, browse your tables to verify the data. The database is now restored.
    If nothing helped try to use:

  • Can not connect the database via query string (C#). The SQL Server Management Studio is showing the full path of a location instead of database name.

    I can not connect to the database via C#. The database is showing full path of the database file instead of the database name. See the pic: a database showing only name 'emart' and the other database showing the full path.
    : Robby

    Hi,
    According to your post, I know that the database name is showing file path of the database rather than the database name in SQL Server Management Studio. You were not able to
    establish a connection to the database using C#.
    As Olaf said, was any error message thrown out when the connection failed? How did you create these databases?
    You can use the following T-SQL to attach the database and see if the issue persists.
    CREATE DATABASE
    databasename
        ON (FILENAME = 'filepath _Data.mdf'),
        (FILENAME = 'filepath_Log.ldf')
    FOR ATTACH;
    Thanks.

  • Access Tables in SQL Server

    I was told that SAP on SQL Server maintains a very unique security where someone can not just directly access tables in SQL Server. I was told you need the SAP client in order to access the data stored within the DB. With other systems, normally users such as a DBA  or privileged users would be able to directly log into the database and possibly alter data, whereas this is not the case for SAP on SQL. Can someone help confirm if this is true or not and explain to me how this works.

    Hi Julia:
    You can access data stored in SQL tables using Enterprise Manager or SQL Query Analyzer and you can do in every other database system such as DB2, Informix or Oracle; there are some well-known Cluster tables that information can only be read from inside SAP.

  • Not able to access database from a remote machine using SQL Server Management Studio

    Hi,
    I have a DB_BOX with SQL Server 2008 R2 installed. I can access the databases on the local machine using SQL Server Management Studio but it is not accessible from other machines, though the machines are in same domain.
    I have remote enabled on SQL Server box, TCP enabled, firewall off. I checked with IP Address too, all SQL Server services are running.
    The SQL Server log shows the message
    The requested service has been stopped or disabled and is unavailable at this time. The connection has been closed.
    I get the below message in SSMS from remote machine.
    Details of error message are

    Sorry, missed the message from the errorlog in the original post. You shouldn't have included that big .Net dump that hid the important facts. :-)
    My first Google attempt on that message (which I have never seen before) suggests that the TCP Enpoint is stopped, so try this:
    ALTER ENDPOINT [TSQL Default TCP]
    STATE=STARTED;

  • Error trying to run SSIS Package via SQL Server Agent: DTExec: Could not set \Package.Variables[User::VarObjectDataSet].Properties[Value] value to System.Object

    Situation:
    SSIS Package designed in SQL Server 2012 - SQL Server Data Tools
    Windows 7 - 64 bit.
    The package (32 bit) extracts data from a SQL Server db to an Excel Output file, via an OLE DB connection.
    It uses 3 package variables:
    *) SQLCommand (String) to specify the SQL Statement to be executed by the package
    Property path: \Package.Variables[User::ExcelOutputFile].Properties[Value]
    Value: f:\Output Data.xls
    *) EXCELOutputFIle (String) to specify path and filename of the Excel output file
    Property path: \Package.Variables[User::SQLCommand].Properties[Value]
    Value: select * from CartOrder
    *) VarObjectDataSet (Object) to hold the data returned by SQL Server)
    Property path: \Package.Variables[User::VarObjectDataSet].Properties[Value]
    Value: System.Object
    It consists out of 2 components:
    *) Execute SQL Task: executes the SQL Statement passed on via a package variable. The resultng rows are stored in the package variable VarObjectDataSet
    *) Script Task: creates the physical output file and iterates VarObjectDataSet to populate the Excel file.
    Outcome and issue:The package runs perfectly fine both in SQL Server Data Tools itself and in DTEXECUI.
    However, whenever I run it via SQL Server Agent (with 32 bit runtime option set), it returns the errror message below.
    This package contains 3 package variables but the error stating that a package variable can not be set, pops up for the VarObjectDataSet only.  This makes me wonder if it is uberhaupt possible to set the value of a package variable
    of type Object.
    Can anybody help me on this please ?

    Hi Visakh,
    thank you for your reply.
    So, judging by your reply, not all package variables used inside a package need to be set a value for when run in DTEXEC ?
    I already tried that but my package ended up in error (something to do with "... invocation ...." and that error is anything but clearly documented. Judging by the error message itself, it looks like it could be just about anything. that is why I asked my
    first question about the object type package variable.
    Now, I will remove it from the 'set values' list and try another go cracking the unclear error-message " ... invocation ...". Does an error message about " ... invocation ..." ring any bells, now that we are talking about it here ?
    Thx in advance
    Jurgen
    Yes exactly
    You need to set values only forthem which needs to be controlled from outside the package
    Any variable which gets its value through expression set inside package or through a query inside execute sql task/script task can be ignored from DTExec
    Ok I've seen the invocation error mostly inside script task. This may be because some error inside script written in script task. If it appeared after you removed the variable then it may because some reference of variable existing within script task.

  • Using LV 8.6 to access database created in MS SQL Server Management Studio

    I am using Labview 8.6 to access a database created in MS SQL Server Mgmt Studio, using LabSQL ADO utilities. I don't have LV's add-on DB connectivity toolkit, but just the ADO utilities. Can i do it? If yes, how? I have no experience whatsoever in connecting and accessing data from a DB. An example would help.
    Thanks,

    Szi wrote:
    As for my opinion you cant access without DB connectivity toolkit.
    Nonsense.
    With LabSQL, you should first find an on-line SQL tutorial and refer to the Microsoft help files. I would recomend creating a UDL file. This is the connection string you use for the ADO Connection Open function. You might want to to get a little help from the db administrator. You'll certainly need help in getting a login and password.
    There are examples that come with LabSQL

    Hi Olaf Helper,
    I don't now how to add a DSN for the Access Database using ODBC Admin. Can you Please help me with that one. as the solution to above problem i Have added a startup parameter -g512 to SQL Server is it effects my existing Assemblies in SQL Server. I am replacing

  • Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?

    Hi All,
    Is it possible to create a two node cluster with SQL server 2012 STD on node1 and SQL Server 2008 ENT on node2 on a Windows server 2012?
    aa

    I think you are confused with the way cluster is installed. Installing SQL on cluster is a two step process. On first node you create a new SQL cluster and on second node you need "AddNode" action.
    Same edition media has to be used in above two operation.
    you can install two separate instances with one enterprise and one standard.

  • Is it possible to access to a SQL Server in the LAN?

    I would like to know if it's possible to access to a SQL Server that is in my LAN from Windows Phone 8.1.
    Thank you so much.

    Hello,
    in principle, it's the question whether to implement a thin or a thick client and whether to design a two-tier or a multi-tier application.
    A thick client is almost standalone - the business logic is implemented and performed by the client, whereas the thin client in principle does only provide an UI to access the services that the server provides.
    Thus, thick clients have more workload than thin clients and thick clients must guarantee that the data stays consistent. Besides, if you have multiple thick clients for multiple platforms (which is often soon the case after you have at least one mobile
    client) you have to port the whole business logic. This implies that you must fix each bug which is not in the presentation layer for each platform you support - and that you must propagate those bugfixes to all stores you support. Even if your clients are
    trusted - a bug in the iPhone app could make the windows phone or the desktop app useless by accidentally breaking some data invariants. But to keep those database invariants intact, you must wrap all your operations into atomic transactions which will increase
    the complexity of the business logic.
    If you have a thin client and a logic tier between the presentation and data tier, you have a single point where you can ensure all data invariants and that you can easily debug and deploy since there is only one instance.
