Can't access my NTFS formatted hard drive anymore on my Mac OS?

I downloaded this app back in November because of my new transfer to a MacBook Pro from a Windows PC.
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26288/ntfs-for-mac-os-x
It worked fine back in November but now I am trying to back up my files and I cannot access anything in my hard drive.  What do I do?
I have already redownloaded the NTFS software.  I am not too computer savvy can I get any help please?

I am sorry to say that it very well might be. Chalk it up to a learning experience. Even with Paragon to allow writing to NTFS there are still dificulties with some applications that use features of HFS+ to do their magic. How are you backup up to that disk currently? Time Machine is known to have problem with NTFS.
My backup plan, rather then backing up a backup, is to do two backups using different software for each. One backup is done with Time Machine and the other is done with SuperDuper.
Since the SuperDuper backup is a bootable clone of my system disk, that allows me to recover my Mac by rebooting from it. So that I am able to continue in case of a disk failure very rapidly.
The Time Machine backup is good for recovery of files when I need to do that.
Either one can be used to do the same functions as the other except that it would be a little slower.
I like the idea of using different software for each since I think that gives me additional protection.

  • Can't Transfer Files to External Hard Drive Anymore

I have a Toshiba External hard drive, 1 TB, (I've only used 140.51 GB) that I have been saving files and photos to.  A window would pop up asking me what I wanted to use the hard drive for, and I always click decide later.  The other day I accidentally clicked a different option and now it won't let me put pictures on it anymore and says read only.  Is there a way I can change this back to where I can save my photos to the hard drive without erasing anything off of it?

In that case, I can guarantee the drive isn't formatted for Mac. The drive can't be recognized because NTFS which is a PC format. OS X can read a NTFS drive and copy data on it to your iMac but it cannot write to NTFS. If the drive is going to be only used with a Mac then it needs to be reformatted in Mac OS Extended) Journaled). This is easy to do and is explained in:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3509
If you are going to share the external HD with PCs and Macs you can still do this, here is a MacWorld article that explains how:

  • Can I use an NTFS external hard drive with my mac?

I am running version 10.6.8 and the operating software is Snow Leapord. I want to upgrade to Lion but firstly I want to back-up my files just incase s*** happens.  I've bought a used 500gb external hard drive and I understand it's in the NTFS (Windows NT File System) format. Although I am able to view what's on the hard drive as well as use it, for example, open photos, watch movies, I cannot delete anything on it. I could get a mac compatible hard drive but that's going to be at an extra cost! Any help much appreciated.

You can format it for Mac compatibility with Disk Utility.  However, you will likely lose your files.  Here's the options you have:

Can I access  photos and music on my usb hard drive connected to an airport extreme using an iPhone 5? I can access theme with mac and pc.

Yes, but not out of the box. You have to download an app like FileBrowser.

  • I can not access everything on External Hard drive

I switched from PC to MAC and am using an external hard drive to do Time Machine back ups.  I used the hard drive to store pics and other files before on PC, and now that I have used to to store backups can no longer access my other files.
Question: How can I access the other files?
    OR
How can I turn off the time machine backups on this disc (or tell the external drive it is not the back up anymore) so I can get to my pictures?  I think once I do this, I could partitian the drive and use for both... No?

In Disk Utility, you should see an icon in the drive list representing the external drive. Below that is an icon for each volume on the drive. One of those is the Time Machine backup volume. If there are no others, then there is no other data on the drive, at least none that you can get to.

  • Can I use my PC-formatted hard drive on my Macbook?

I am a new Mac user and have had my Macbook for about a month now. Everything is working fine and I love it. However, I have been holding off on using my iPod and iTunes with it because my iPod is formatted for a PC. I also have an external hard drive which is formatted for a PC and I would like to use to move my iTunes library from my old desktop PC to my Macbook. Would using the hard drive be the best way to make this move? Do I need to do anything special to the hard drive before connecting it to my Macbook? The most important thing I want to be able to do is just put my iTunes library onto the Macbook.
Please do your best not to use any complicated lingo in your answers-I can promise you it won't help me as I'm sure I won't understand any of it! Thank you for your help.

With an AirPort Extreme, the PCs will "see" the HFS+ formatted drive on the network as a FAT32 volume, so there is no need to reformat the drive as FAT32, but the normal limitations of FAT32, like maximum file size of 4 GB, slow transfers, etc. will still apply.

  • Can't access songs on external hard drive

I've transferred itunes from one PC to an external hard drive and connected to the new PC and selected the iTunes folder but I can't see the music, apps etc.  Can anyone help??

What steps did you follow from where? Do you have a copy of the entire iTunes folder on the external drive, including most importantly a file called iTunes Library.itl or do you just have the media folder? Do you still have the working library on the original computer in case you need to execute the transfer again?
My suggested transfer process can be found here.

  • How can I access the time capsule hard drive via ethernet?

I recently bought a new laptop, as my old one was sadly stolen. I'm trying to connect to my backed up time capsule hard drive via ethernet to retrieve my files, but it doesn't seem to work. Oddly enough I have no issues over wifi. When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network. I have a MacBook Air with an ethernet adapter if that makes any difference. I'm also running the latest OS X and firmware. Wifi is simply too slow for this restoration process, so any suggestions?
Could I possibly connect via USB? What kind of cable would that require? Is the ethernet issue a problem with my settings?
    Help greatly appreciated

In the Network panel of System Preferences do you have an Ethernet connection item on the left? If not, authenticate if necessary by clicking on the lock, then click the plus sign at the bottom of that column and add an Ethernet item.
When I switch from wifi to ethernet, it gives me an error message stating that the disk was not found in the network.
How are you doing that switching? When you switch to Ethernet do you have connectivity to the Internet? If not, do you see a tiny green light on the Time Capsule next to the Ethernet socket you're using?
Could I possibly connect via USB?
    No.

  • FORMAT HARD DRIVE FOR USE ON MAC AND WINDOWS

I'm going to start working on scanning a lot of old family photos and getting them put on an external hard drive for my parents.  I'd also like to eventually put old VHS family home movies on the hard drive as well.  However, I'm not sure what to do about the hard drive.  I know if I format it to be compatible with my Mac it probably won't be compatible with their PC.  I read about the FAT32 option but I saw something about a file not working if it's over 4 GB in size.  I'm thinking maybe some of those home movies will be larger than 4GB.  I also saw an exFAT option.  If I go with that will I be able to scan the photos on my Mac, get the home videos converted and put it all on the hard drive will all of it be visible and usable on their Windows PC?
    Thanks for your help!

    matahari_1946,
if you’re not yet backing up your Mac’s internal hard disk, I’d recommend first that you purchase an external hard drive for yourself for exclusive use as a Time Machine backup destination; that way, in case of a disk problem, you won’t permanently lose all of your scanned photos and imported movies.
A 4 GB file limit does apply to FAT32 filesystems. If their version of Windows allows, the external disk which will hold those photos and videos should be formatted as NTFS from their PC, so that they can watch video files over 4 GB. (It’s unlikely that an individual photo file would be over 4 GB.) However, OS X doesn’t come out of the box with NTFS support. The exFAT filesystem is able to hold files over 4 GB, and it is supported by Mac OS X 10.6.5 and newer, but it’s optimized for flash drives; it’s more “fragile” on hard disks than other filesystems are. As a workaround, you could format a flash drive to have exFAT, copy videos over 4 GB onto the flash drive, and then use your parents’ PC to copy the videos from the flash drive to their NTFS external disk. Other alternatives would be to look for third-party software for OS X which supports reading from and writing to NTFS disks, or third-party software for Windows which supports reading from and writing to journaled HFS+ (the default OS X filesystem) disks.

  • Can i use my ipod as hard-drive with pc and mac??

    hi
ive been using new classic ipod with pc for a while.
now i have a new macbook.
can i use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer files to macbook??
like say if i download some software onto pc, i put that onto ipod,
and then transfer to macbook via ipod hard drive........
    is this ok?
can i use my ipod on macbook and pc? or is it just one of the other?
    thanks
(transfering my pc itunes library to macbook is not urgent yet....but would it be as easy as just copying the song files across? something like itornado usb wire....)

*can i use the ipod as a hard drive to transfer files to macbook??*
Macs can read Windows formatting so if your iPod was first used and formatted on a PC you should have no issue with using it as a removable hard drive on the Mac: How to determine your iPod's disk format
Just for reference, iPods formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Mac formatted iPods can only be used on a PC that has a third party helper program such as XPlay or MacDrive installed.

  • How can i restore info from my hard drive to my new mac

I have an "old" black macbook, that I have backed up on an external hard drive using time machine.  I recently got a new (aluminum) macbook and i want to transfer my data from my hard drive to my new computer (itunes library, photos, etc...).  I do NOT have ilife or iwork on my new computer, but i have it on my old macbook which (in theory) should be backed up on my external HD.  Is it possible to transfer applications like that to my new computer if I "disable" it from my old computer?  I also just got a new iphone 5 and would like to be able to sync it to my new computer but my itunes library is empty (until i take stuff from my hard drive and put it on my new computer).  Obviously my old macbook will not support the software needed to hook up my new iphone to itunes, but my new computer will.  So I beg the answer to my question...how do i get my stuff from one computer to the new one and can i transfer applications such at iphoto, pages, (ilife, iwork)...legally by disabling from my old computer?????
    PLEASE HELP!

Have a read here How do I set up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC?

  • [Solved] Apache and Plex can't access files on my second drive anymore

Hi, I'm  having a strange issue accessing files on a second drive through web servers.  I have a main SSD drive, and a second HDD that mounts to ~/Media with `/dev/sdb1  /home/diego/Media  ext4  defaults,noatime,data=writeback,x-gvfs-show 0 0`.  I used to have set up my Apache server (2.4) with some symlinks to files in Media, and was able to access them externally.  I also had set up Plex to read from that drive, and everything worked flawlessly.  Ever since a few days ago I noticed that I couldn't access my files externally anymore, and today I noticed Plex isn't able to access my files either.
I really don't remember having changed anything that would affect this, and the permissions haven't changed since it used to work.  Anybody have any ideas of things to try or how to debug?
    Thanks!

  • I can't access my iomega external hard drive

When I first got the Iomega, I could access it and save to it. Now it doesn't appear on my desktop, and the only way I see it is if I open Macintosh HD and I see it as 'idisk' below Macintosh HD. When I click on it it wants me to sign up to mobile me, but I don't have a credit card, so that's a no go.
Please help, as I have files I need to access

At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac.
Then click on More Info>Hardware>USB, does it show up there?
No idea why Mobile me is popping up.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Does the external show up there?

  • I can't see my time capsule hard drive anymore

I have a macbook pro connected to time capsule (1tb) and a printer. I can access the internet and can print but my machine has stopped backing up and cannot find the time capsule hardrive anymore. I have tried resetting everything (several times) to no avail. Help!

Open a Finder window and look for your TC in the sidebar, then click on it. It will then display one of the following messages: "Connected as <your user name>" or "Connection failed." If it's the latter, click on the "Connect..." button and enter the TC password. Make sure the checkbox for "Remember this password" is selected before you hit OK.
Once this is done, your backups should work. Your TC should be connected whether or not it's mounted on the Desktop, even after you logout/login or restart or even wake up from sleep.
    Hope this helps.
