Can't combine PDFs in Preview 7.0
I just upgraded to Mavericks last night, and now I'm having an issue with Preview -- I can't use it to combine two PDF documents.
The help section says to open the documents you want to combine and set both to thumbnail view, then drag the thumbnail of one doc on top of the thumbnail for the other doc and release it when a green "+" symbol appears. This method worked fine in Mountain Lion, and I used it regularly. Now, the green "+" symbol doesn't appear, and I can't combine the documents.
Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it? Or is it an error that Apple needs to patch?

Technical writing is harder than it sounds, eh? What exactly do you mean by the terms "individual files", "first file", and "multiple file"?
Preview can open multiple PDF files at once. Each PDF file may have multiple pages. How do you represent that? Preview uses a disclosure triangle. If you want to manipulate individual pages, you must expand a multipage PDF file. If you are working with a single-page PDF file, there is no disclosure triangle because there is no additional data to disclose. In this case, you can add a page just by dragging another page on top of the single page PDF.
If you try that with a multipage PDF, it will just expand the PDF and open the dropped page or file as a separate file. This is probably where you are getting tripped up.
Finally, the preview sidebar is not the end-all and be-all of PDFs. Try using the Contact Sheet view instead.

Combine PDFs using Preview in Mountain Lion (other threads read)
I have reviewed several threads about combining PDFs in Mountain Lion. I will ultimately learn Automator but for now, I have a relatively simple question:
1) I open multiple PDFs in Preview, one window per PDF
2) I drag thumbnail pages from documents 2 through n onto document 1 so that it makes one long document. ie. one unbroken string of pages and not sections within a PDF
Question: How do I save this combined document without deleting or affecting the first document?
Duplicate causes one of the uncombined documents to pop up with the filename highlighted. I don't see how to give the combined document a new filename for saning
Rename gives me a file of the three combined documents but the first document disappears
Save overwrites the first document with the combined document
I must be missing something simple. I recognize that the lack of "Save As" is a sensitive issue but ultimately, that's what I want to do: Save the combined document with its own filename and have the individual documents intact.ncasey88 and Old Toad:

e.g. Files are 1.pdf, 2.pdf, 3.pdf, each is one page long, and I open each in its own Preview window. I drop thumbnails of 2.pdf and 3.pdf onto the thumbnail area of 1.pdf. I export or print into a file called 123.pdf
Result: 1.pdf and 123.pdf have the same information (all three files). 2.pdf and 3.pdf are unchanged but 1.pdf is three pages long. -
You used to be able to drag and drop pages from one Preview document to another. That feature is not longer available. Is there anyway to combine PDF documents into one file now?
I found that if I:
1. Show edit toobar - which is in View or is a button next to the search bar in Preview
This causes a small addition symbol "+" to appear in the bottom left corner of the icon menu on the left side of preview.
2. Click on the addition symbol and you'll be given three options
Insert page from scanner
Insert page from file
Insert blank page
3. Once I inserted from file (I already had the pdf) I could then save it as a single document.
The above methods always kept the documents separate and did not allow me to merge. -

Combine Files tool in PDF Pack can combine multiple files into a single PDF file, but adding page number to each page of the single PDF file has be done in Adobe Acrobat.

How to add page number in PDF file using Acrobat XI Pro:
1. Open a PDF file
2. Select "Tools" from top right corner
3. Select "Pages" tab
4. Select "Header & Footer"
5. Select "Add Header & Footer" from pull down menu
6. Select location for page number then click "Insert Page Number" button
7. Click "OK" button

It looks like the extension .pdf is not regognized anymore. It shows only raw text in the browser window...

Open PDF in Preview in Safari 5.1
I'm using Safari 5.1, and recently, I found out that the "Open PDF in Preview" option does not work. I would click the button several times, and it would not bring up Preview. I don't have Adobe Reader or any other PDF reader on my MBP. The only way I can view the PDF in Preview is to first download it and then open it up in Preview. Does anybody know why this is happening? Is this a problem with Safari 5.1?
Gp tp /Library/Preferences - Internet Plug-Ins.
Move the PDF Browser Plug-in and any Adobe plugins to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
Right or control click a PDF file you have on the hard drive then click: Get Info
In the Get Info panel click Open with.
Select Preview then click: Change all
Might be a good idea to read this even if you don't use Adobe Acrobat just so you will be aware.

Can't combine two PDF doc in Preview and save under different title.
I regularly used Preview to combine two scanned pages into a single document and them save them under a different name using "Save As..." With Lion I get a unhappy run-around within Versions and can't save the combined document. I wound up placing the two files in folder and zipping it for transmission via Mail. What is the procedure under Lion with Versions, or how do I disable Versions? I can track my documents quite adequately without Versions.

You can combine PDFs directly in Preview, but the interface is a little tricksy.
First open the sidebar in Preview. If your existing PDF has only one page, there will be just that one thumbnail.
The key is to drag new files onto this thumbnail/icon, not below it. If you drag below it you'll just show two separate docs in the same preview window-- but if you drag on top onto it it will highlight and the two files will combine. Then you can hit save. -

Adobe PDF Pack is an online subscription--it definitely allows you to combine several files into one PDF file. For more information about PDF Pack, see Reliably Create PDFs, Convert PDFs, & Merge PDFs Online | Adobe PDF Pack. If you don't have the full version of Acrobat, this is a great solution for combining PDF files.
However, if you're using Acrobat (not Adobe Reader), you combine files by following these steps:
Open a PDF file that you want to add pages to.
Click the Pages pane on the Tools panel (on the right side of the application).
Click Insert From File, and choose the file that you want to combine with the PDF that you opened in step 1.
Make any changes necessary in the Insert Pages dialog box--these settings determine where the new file will be inserted.
Click OK.

Can not print a pdf from preview. It crashes every time from 2 different printers.
I can not print a pdf from preview. I have tried at two separate locations with two different printers.
I am having the same kind of problem when trying to print any kind of pdf: big, small, text only, with pictures. I dont know how it happend. Now it is happening in both my imac and macbook pro both runing the latest Lion MacOS with all updates installed. It is weird one moment my machine was printing ok then it stopped working. I have updated the printer software I have a canon image class mf4350. Also the curious thing is that I can print the same pdf document from adobe acrobat pro on the same computers with out any kind of problems.

How and where can I combine several pdf files?
I have written a Guide Book for Music Teachers in Word, converted it into a pdf file and would now like to insert sheet music files written with Sibelius Notation Program which have also been converted into pdf files, since they are otherwise not compatible with Word. How and where can these diverse pdf files be combined?
First, make sure you open Acrobat, and not Adobe Reader. It's a common mistake.
From Acrobat, use File | Create | Combine Files into a Single PDF:
On the next panel you can select the files you want to combine, rearrange them, etc., and finally click Combine.
P.S. your menu may look slightly different, as we may not be using the same Acrobat version. -
Can I combine a form created in Livecycle Designer with a standard pdf to create a new document?
I have a fillable form that I created with Livecycle Designer along with two standard pdf files. When I try to combine in Acrobat Pro 10 it identifies the form with XML data and will not allow me to complete the process. Thanks in advance for any help with this.
No you cannot... this is one of the things my organization struggles with. I love livecycle becuase of its dynamic form capabilities, but we have so many other pre-built pdfs in adobe pro that can not be merged with these forms. It is truly frustrating!!! wish i had a better answer for you. Also from the book 'Creating Dynamic Forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer' page 6... "The PDF files that Designer creates are structurally different than other PDF files...... LiveCycle Designer can edit a PDF form created in Acrobat, but Acrobat can not edit a PDF form created in Designer." Likewise... XML pdfs do not merge with other pdfs. JoBeth

No. Reader will not damage files. It is only meant to read pdf files. PDF files are frequently damaged when sent as email due to encoding issues.

Can't open any PDF in preview - it freezes. Help
When I try to open a PDF in preview I get the first page and the loading symbol and nothing else. The application freezes and that's it. I end up having to false quit and I can't read the document. Any ideas. This is driving me crazy and I need to read PDFs for work and I work at home. Please help.

When I open a pdf, it used to open in Preview. Now my iMac requires Adobe Reader, but I prefer Preview. How can I make my iMac open pdf in Preview again?
If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.
