Can't copy write-protected folder to new location

After doing a clean-install of Snow Leopard, and restoring home directory from Time Machine, I am unable to use the Finder to copy certain write-protected folders to a new location. Folder and all contents are owned by me, and using the Terminal to *cp -r* the folder and its contents works just fine. Trying to Command-C and Command-V the folder to the Desktop, say, or to click-drag or option-click-drag the folder itself cause a grayed-out version of the folder to appear briefly on the Desktop, and then disappear with no dialog box, indicated error, or entry in the log files.
Interestingly, creating a new folder, changing it to read-only, and moving it with the Finder IS successful. This behavior only seems to be affecting files that were restored using Time Machine.
A screencapture of this behavior is at http://www.crashwhite.com/tmp/finder_bug.mov
Any ideas? I'm mystified!
Thanks...

Hi, V.K, and thanks for checking in. To respond to your questions:
• chmodding to 755 or anything else that gives me write permission allows the move or copy to occur as expected.
• chmodding to 444 is a means of archiving the state of a folder and its contents. I do this to avoid corrupting a year's worth of documents. In the past (w/ Tiger, Leopard, etc.), I've been able to copy an "archived" directory into the new writeable directory with no difficulty.
• In Terminal:
+$ ls -ladeO Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly\ 08-09/wasc/+
*dr-xr-xr-x 3 rwhite rwhite - 102 Oct 11 11:16 Documents/arc/edu/poly/poly 08-09/wasc/*
+$ ls -ladeO Desktop+
*drwx------+ 15 rwhite rwhite - 510 Oct 11 13:19 Desktop*
*0: group:everyone deny delete*
I am unfamiliar with ACL--hadn't actually ever heard of it until now--so I'm going to start digging about a bit. It would appear that the + at the end of the Desktop listing indicates that there is an ACL that is having some effect here.
Re: my installation, I began with a standard migration, but that process left some cruft in my system that was slowing the system (lots of log errors from old stuff that was no longer installed), so I did a clean install: wiped drive completely, installed new from Snow Leopard, and did a Restore of user directory from Time Machine. I believe that used Migration Assistant to migrate from TM, but it may have been that I simply did a Restore from TM.
Off to go research ACL a little more. Thanks for the tip, and any additional advice you might have!
Cheers,
Richard

  • How can I copy current board  content into new board?

    Hi there.
how can I copy current board  content  into new board?

    Hi-
Can I drag it to the external drive or perhaps just the songs, then copy/drag them to my new computer ?
    Pretty much, Yes.
If you wish to keep the formatting, notes, ratings, etc. that are with the library, you should allow the iTunes software to "discover" the library.
If the iTunes Library from one machine is placed on an external drive, the iTunes software on the other machine can be directed to the library of the external drive when connected.
Allowing "Copy to Home folder/music" will provide for copying of the library to the new machine.
Alternatively, if the library is loaded onto an iPod, the iPod can be used to transfer the music.

  • Can't copy time machine folder

    Hi,
I had to format the hd where I have time machine, so I copy the tm folder to a new folder in other external hard drive.
Now that I format the 1st external hd I trying to copy the tm folder to the root of the formated hd, but after a long wait I get a message saying that there is enought space...
    How can solve thia ?
How can I copy that big folder faster, is there any other way ?
    Thanks!

I've been doing a bit of experimentation -- sorry to say, it looks like you're out of luck.
I can explain what is happening, but am not entirely sure why.
It's the result of the rather unusual structure of Time Machine backups.   The first backup copies everything.  On all subsequent backups, only the items that changed are copied.  But "hard links" are made to the items that did not change, so each backup appears to be a full one.  See Hard Links in How Time Machine works its Magic for a better explanation.
Ordinarily when you copy the Backups.backupdb folder, those "hard links" are copied correctly -- there's still only one copy of the unchanged files, but multiple hard links to them.
Once the Backups.backupdb folder is moved from the top level of the drive (apparently), the copy doesn't work properly -- instead of copying the hard links, the actual files are copied.  So if there are 3 backups, all containing hard links to the same unchanged version of a file, the file will be copied 3 times instead of once.  Since few files change from one backup to the next, there will be lots of these, and the copied folder will be many times the size of the original.
That always happened on Leopard, but the Finder was rewritten effective with Snow Leopard so it wouldn't do that.  Apparently it only works properly now if the Backups.backupdb folder is at the top level of the drive, not inside another folder.
So, your best bet is to let Time Machine start fresh on the reformatted drive.  Keep the old backups as long as you think you may need them.  You won't be able to restore from them via Time Machine, but you will be able to copy selected items from them via the Finder (but you may have permissions problems with them).  If space is a problem, you can delete some of the individual date-stamped backup folders.

  • ? copy  write protection

Hi guys just need to know whats the simple quick way to copy write protect your songs. the way I've been doing it is put my songs on a cd then put in a registered self addr envelope to my self then store it away but I'm told thats not the way. any suggestions

Anything you make is automatically the copyright of the author. You do not have to do anything to own your own work. You have the "right to copy" your own work automatically. That's what copyright is.
However, "proving" something is your own work is another matter entirely if the ownership of that work is challenged.
Mailing an envelope to yourself is an old, outdated and shaky practice that will not hold up against a legal challenge. A better way is to contact a lawyer, or music biz lawyer, to register that work and who can hold a copy on your behalf, or get the work published if you have a publishing contract.

  • How can I copy mp3 files which are already located by itunes to the actual itunes folder?

    Dear all,
I would like to transfer my whole itunes library to a new computer. I know that this can be done by copying the whole itunes folder on the old computer (if you want to keep all the data of the itunes files). However, I have a little problem. Since I had a long period in which I did not download music from itunes or I got music from others, most files are not in the itunes library folder. I kept them in many different folders all over my hard disk, because it is a quite big collection from the past decade orso. In that time, I just dragged the files to itunes, so itunes can now locate them. They are not in the actual itunes library folder though. Is there a possible way to let itunes locate the files (it already has the locations) and put/copy them in the itunes library folder?
    Thanks in advance!!

With these options selected in Edit > Preferences > Advanced:
select File > Library > Organize Library...  When you get this prompt:
check the Consolidate files box and - if not greyed out - the Reorganize files ... box, and click OK.  iTunes will then copy any media files that are not stored in the iTunes Media folder structure into it, so that you can then copy the complete iTunes folder to your new computer.

  • How can i remove write protection from a Hard drive

Cant write to HDD on win7 keeps saying "the disk is write protected"  Drive is in a removable IDE caddy, I put the drive in a USB caddy and was able to format the drive, but still get the same error when i try to write to it, I took ownership of the drive and it shows me as the owner. The drive was used in XP previously but i no longer have an XP system since upgrading to Win7. I have removed the partition with Paragon drive copy and re partitioned the drive, renamed the drive but still gives the same error.

I used succesfully diskpart (on my Windows 7).
In "Command prompt" (Start -> Run -> cmd) type "diskpart" and press enter.
(I wrote "cmd" and then on right click menu I clicked on "Run as administrator").
In diskpart utility (in the same dos window) you have to type "list volume".
You can see your disk (I see all my 4 partitions on the disk that give me the problem) with a progressive number index.
Type "select volume #" and press enter, "#" is the number corresponding to your disk/partition.
    Wait the response.
Then type "attributes disk clear readonly" and wait (I wait 2/3 minutes) for the result.
It says that operation was completed, and I can write on my partitions (and run checking/scanning on it).
    Hi,
The hard drive I had problems with had 3 partitions and at least one was write-protected. Just to make sure I used the above "diskpart" commands on each volume and it cleared the write-protected attributes and was able to format the 10Gb partition I used
just for storing the Pagefile.sys file.
The write-protect attribute on this WD AV 1Tb h/drive may have been added as it was previously used in my Foxtel IQ box. I used Ghost 11.5.1 to clone my failing WD 1Tb h/drive that had 1376 delays and 50 bad sectors when scanned with HDD Regenerator
onto the previously used Foxtel IQ h/drive.
    Cheerz ;)
Thanks again, I was pulling my hair out to find a solution.

  • Copying Write protected files!

    Hi
I Have some training QT movies that I want to put on my ipod. However, the files wont copy to my desktop.
Any ideas how can get over this. I know ordinarily that QT movies are sometimes copy protected because the author doesn't want them copied! But this is a case of those who steel movies messing it up for the rest of us.
I am not a t my computer most of the time, but I always have my ipod with me.
    Any solutions?
    Thanks
    Trevor

If the files are protected (DRM) there is nothing you can do but watch them the way the author intended.
Even discussing methods of breaking DRM is against the rules of these pages.
If you're trying to move "write" protected files that is an issue of permissions.
Are the videos on a CD or inside a Disk Image?

  • Can't un-write protect TDM files

I am using the storage VIs to manipulate a TDM file that was created using the TDM header writer API. When I try to do any operations on it (specifically, deleting a channel), i get error -2561 "Data storage is write-protected.". I have checked the permissions on the file and they should be correct.
I ran some tests and found that i can create a TDM file using the storage VIs and delete a channel without any issues. According to LabVIEW, the file created using this method has the same permissions of the problem file.
Do you think this could be a bug with the TDM header writer VIs? Or am i missing something obvious?
I have attached  files showcasing the issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Bazookazuz-
The standard is described in the Developer Zone described above.  TDM files are binary files written such that it follows a particular pattern.  That way the data can be easily retrieved and interpreted later.  It is written in the fashion to save disk space and to be created/modified quickly.  All TDM files acquiring data from multiple channels follow the same format alternating between each channel taking each sample (also described in the Developer Zone article).  By converting the data to End-to-End, it makes all the data for each channel together.
In order to distinguish between the modified and unmodified tdm files, there is no way to just look at the file type and know without a naming scheme.  Programmatically, you can parse out the first few data sets and see if they are the same channel and then you can determine from there.

  • CAPL browser shows that the .can file is write protected while it is not and keeps toggling, CPU performance reach 100%

The problem is when I open the CAPL browser, the CPU load increases to 99~100%, and the .can file I am editing can't be saved, and I keep getting the message "file is protected and can't be saved". This happened on multiple machines with different CANoe versions.
    I tested on these versions:
    8.0.36
    8.0.71
    8.0.93
    8.1.60
Randomly the icon of the "write protected" appears beside the file name in the file tab inside the CAPL browser, if I could press the save button while it is not appearing the file is saved, other wise I get the error message. The memory usage is also increases too much and then the browser stop responding.
Do any body had the same issue before? any advice?
Operating system: Windows 7 Ultimate 64

    Hi Allaithy,
Can you clarify how is this issue related to NI CAN products?
Anyway, here are some things to try:
Is this the file on a network? Do you have administrator privileges to this network?
    Is file set to Read-only?

  • Can't copy Time Machine backups to new hard drive

The external HD with the Time Machine files is unusable (it can't be written to). Disk Utilities reports missing/damaged nodes and recommends copying all files to a new volume and erasing the HD. I got a brand new HD and began copying the contents. I was able to transfer all the regular files but when I tried to copy the Time Machine files, I got this message: "The backup can't be copied because the backiup volume doesn't have ownership enabled."
I want to use the new HD as the TM volume and continue with the same sequence of backups. How can I enable the ownership soI can copy the files?
    Thanks

    Michael Brady wrote:

    You can't.
Time Machine backups use a complex structure; everything is intricately linked together. If that structure is damaged, as yours is, they can't be copied successfully.
If you have a copy of +Disk Warrior+ or another heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, it's possible it can repair the backups. DW is about $100, and probably a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee it can fix the backups.
And it's not a good idea to mix other data with your backups. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
