Can't Eject USB Devices

I just loaded Leopard on a Mac Mini. Now I cannot eject any USB device, such as thumb drive, camera, etc.. Anyone else have this problem? or know how to eject without just pulling out the device and getting an error?

I had the same problem with kingston microSD inside the USB adaptor. I couldn't eject it. Leopard (10.5.2) would complain that it is in use and for me to quit the applications. In some instances, the Finder would just disappear and I have to launch it again. Ejecting from the arrow didn't work. Ejecting using command-E didn't work. Ejecting right clicking on the desktop icon didn't work.
Then, I open the Terminal, and type the following command :
% sudo umount -f /Volumes/<nameof_yourdevice>
-f = force
And, it got ejected without crashing the Finder. I hope this helps.

    Hi.
I woud like to ask for help. I've been struggling with some "bug" that i came with Arch and usb devices (disks, pendrives). I can't mount it as a normal user using KDE default mounting software (Dolphin, for an exmample). I can mount it only in therminal by using sudo privileages. Is there a way to fix it? I read it, the same problem:

I tried to check everything according this topic, also with udisk2 archwiki thread but on my desktop machine i just can't mount usb devices without root password. This is how the error looks like for a Dolphin:
<Over sized Image removed. URL link preserved>
This is the error, from picture
Error when trying to use acces to "removable device 7,5GB". System showed: The requested operation has failed. Error checking authorization:

Could somebody help me? I even installed udisk mounting tool to mont without root password, added 50-udisks.policy and it just does not work.
    Help.
I can mount it wit terminal by typing
    sudo mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/usb
than i'm asked for password and it is mounted. Don't know why i can't mount it without password when connecting usb devices to usb port.

  • IPod Shuffle 4G no Sync-Problem: Ejects USB device

    Hello,
i got an iPod Shuffle (4. Gen) with some strange behavior.
I connect it to my laptop or pc (Windows 7) and then i try to sync music with iTunes.
It syncs about 30-150 songs and then i hear the "Eject-Sound" of usb devices
from Windows and i got an Error message from iTunes that "not all objects could
be transferred to the iPod. The iPod itself then is not listed in iTunes anymore.
If I then plug out the iPod and want to listen to the music which it should have been
transferred to the iPod it says: "Please use iTunes to sync music to this iPod"
Plugging it in again theres the windows dialog if i want to "check and repair this device"
Starting iTunes it says that all the space is free on the iPod.
Somethimes I hear the sound from windows for the eject usb media permanent
and cant copy anything to the ipod. I also tried "restore ipod" via iTunes several times
but without success, problems exists further.
I think, that perhaps the flash memory of the iPod is defective or something which
has to do with the transfer process.
I got another iPod (4. Gen) which works without any problems, with the same cable.
So it must be something wrong with this iPod.
The iPod is like 10 months old and in warranty.
Should i send it in to Apple? I think this is a hardware problem....
    with kind regards

You've ruled out a bad cable, a bad USB port on computer, and a software problem on the computer, because your other shuffle works fine.  And a Restore does not help.  That pretty much says the cause is a hardware problem on the shuffle.
So, if it's under warranty, definitely have it checked by a tech before the year is up.  If you have an Apple Store nearby, you can do so at the store's Genius Bar.  You can make a reservation at the store's web page (not required but it may save you waiting time)

  • Can't attach USB devices in Windows XP Mode

I am still trying to set up my new Probook G1 450.  It is presently in the original Win 7 Pro 64-bit OS.
I am trying to use Windows XP Mode.  I can set up XP Mode, but I can't get USB access under it. But for me, the whole point of getting XP Mode is to be able to run two key programs which require USB access. The USB devices have been successfully installed in Win 7 (it's the programs that require XP Mode).
I have tried with VMLiteXPMode, Virtual Box, and finally with Windows Virtual PC. The results are about the same. I am presently trying Windox Virtual PC. When I access the USB button on the top of the XP Mode box, there is a list of all the USB devices. This looks like things are fine. All the devices are there. Hooray. Oops, too soon! It still doesn't work. One still has to "attach" the USB device, by clicking its listing under USB devices. When I do this, I get the following error message:
"Could not attach the USB device. You can attach the USB to a different USB port or restart the virtual machine and try again."
Yes, I can and have done all those things, and  I get the same error message again and again and again. This is true for all USB devices (except the USB mouse, which works perfectly and automatically in XP mode and is *not* listed under USB):
    * Epson Perfection scanner
    * HP Laserject printer
    * the computer's own HP HD Webcam,
    and
    * the computer's own Wireless/Bluetooth Device
For example, the scanner and printer will work well in the host machine, where I have installed them, but they can't be "attached" in XP Mode.
    Notes:
    * I have enabled "integration features"
    * I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the devices.
    * If I try to install the printer in XP Mode, I can't do that, because this requires, at some point, the printer being plugged in to the USB. And I get the above error message when I try to attach it.
Also I have already had to deal with one driver issue (it came with the wrong driver for wireless; the right driver wasn't on the HP support page and couldn't be obtained by the computer's own "update' function),  but when I finally discovered the right driver, wireless worked flawlessly
There is yet another possible driver issue, but I'll leave that for another topic later. One thing at a time.

  • Error message on ejecting USB device even when ejecting properly

I always click on the eject symbol in Finder before removing a usb device but I usually still get the message that the device was not removed correctly and damage may occur.  I have also gotten the message when using Eject from the Menu.  Anyone else have this issue?  This has happened in 3 different OS versions, not just the new one.

You're writing of the Sidebar on a Finder window, right? If so then, yes, that should unmount the drive. But if you have your Finder preferences set up to display drives on your Desktop, try dragging the HD icon to the Trash. It may stall for a few seconds but the drive should be properly unmounted. If you still get the 'drive was not properly ejected...' errors, I don't know what to tell you....

  • Can't eject DVD - "device is busy"

I'm attempting to install the Orange Box in Wine. It finished with disc 1 and is asking for disc 2. The button on the drive won't eject it so I went to dolphin to eject it but it cannot be unmounted. I tried "eject /dev/cdrom" from the command line and it gives the following error:
/sbin/umount.hal: Unmounting /media/Orange Box failed: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Busy: umount: /media/Orange Box: device is busy.
How can I force it to unmount and eject?

Maybe you can copy the contents to your hard drive and 'mount -o loop file.iso /mnt/image'.
Actually I just read the Wine appDB entry for this and they had a solution. I mapped my cd drive to D: in Wine and then called "wine eject D:" and it released it. I'm still disappointed that even root can't eject a drive in use. I thought the whole philosophy of using root was "do what I type regardless of the consequences". I mean, I can make a typo and erase the contents of my hard drive but not unmount a DVD?
I think that even the root can't lift himself by the bootstraps but he can leap out of a tall building - if he wants to.
Root can kill any process and then eject that damn disk but some things are (what I call) logically impossible.

    Why not use automounting instead?
To install Arch packages I needed an Internet connection, which required use of a Sierra Wireless card, which required chatscripts stored on another filesystem.  In my first Arch forum post ever, the one preceding this one, I learned to mount a device by creating a mountpoint in /media then invoking #mount.  After installing all packages and creating a user name, I signed on with xfce4 and plugged in the usb device again.  It didn't mount.  So I did it manually using sudo.  Since that worked I had the idea that adding the mountpoints to /etc/fstab would be useful, so I did.  When that didn't work I decided to just ask for help.
So sure, I'm down for some automounting action.  How do I do it?

  • VirtualBox Can't Find USB Devices

    Hi all,
Just run into a USB issue in VirtualBox, I tried everything I can find on internet, but nothing fixes it.
It used to work fine before, I don't know when was it broken. Here's some information:
    I'm running VirtualBox 4.2.6 on Linux 3.6.11-1-ARCH.
I added myself to vboxusers, and I have
    export VBOX_USB=usbfs
    in ~/.xinitrc
I also have VirtualBox extension pack installed.
Now the weird part is, I can access USB devices if I run VirtualBox with root privilege, while with my own account, it shows the following error message once I click "Settings" button:
    Failed to access USB subsystem.
Could not load the Host USB Proxy service: VERR_NOT_FOUND.
Anyone has any idea what's going on?

    Guys.
    Was there a solution found?
I get the same error on current (fully updated) install.

I was rebooting many times today.
    I have tried adding this:
    VBOX_USB=usbfs
    and this:
    export VBOX_USB=usbfs
    to the
    ~/.bashrc
Found this page and I see these two commands:
    VBoxManage list usbhost
    ls -lR /dev/vboxusb
    The results are:
    Terminal wrote:
    [andrzejl@wishmacer ~]$ VBoxManage list usbhost

    [andrzejl@wishmacer ~]$ ls -lR /dev/vboxusb
ls: cannot access /dev/vboxusb: No such file or directory
    [andrzejl@wishmacer ~]$
Then I have found another page which said:
    Some other page wrote:
    Add this:
    usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults,devmode=666 0 0
    to the
    /etc/fstab

BUT I double checked before adding it...
    Terminal wrote:[root@wishmacer andrzejl]# ls /proc/bus/usb
ls: cannot access /proc/bus/usb: No such file or directory
    [root@wishmacer andrzejl]#
SO... There is no such folder - the mount would fail...

/proc/bus/usb is removed from kernel 3.5.0. That is the problem?
Basically I have spent the last 3 or 4 hours (maybe more) trying to figure this out on my own - I thought it would be a good idea to report this here as this thread is similar (to say the least) to my case and then keep searching for a solution to this annoyance.
    Regards.

  • Can i change usb device driver from windows 7 format to mac format?

i bought an pcdvb xvision 3100.it has drivers for windows 7 .i have a macbook pro with mountain lion.how can i use this usb device on mac .please explain which app can do this to convert this driver or how with other ways?

A Google search turned up this device as only being sold in Arabic countries - I can't tell for sure what it is: a stereo receiver? You're just going to have to check with the manufacturer to see if there is OS X support for the device.

  • Can't eject USB modem (Vodafone) - MAC OS crash

    Hi,
I have recently purchased a USB modem for mobile broadband from Vodafone Australia. When I plug it into my Macbook (Intel Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.5.8) the modem appears then automatically disappears from the "DEVICES" tab on the Finder. It also disappears from Disk Utility and the Desktop, so I can't find a way to eject the modem when I'm done. If I unplug it, the computer freezes, with a black shade coming down and telling me that I have to turn off the computer. Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks for any help!
    Eric

I had a problem that might be related to yours: after I unplugged my fax modem there was a 30-second timeout delay before my iMac (OSX 10.6.5) would go to sleep. The problem went away when I "deleted" the modem:

  • Can't eject USB drive

    Hi,
This is driving me crazy. Every time I used a USB drive, I am told that it can't be ejected because a program is using it. Sometimes it says the finder is using it (it shouldn't be: if the finder is using it it is only listing it as a drive). Relaunching the finder using "force quit" doesn't help: it just changes the message to "one or more programs may be using it". Shutting down every single program - none of which are using it anyway - doesn't help. I eventually get a force eject option, which I use, though that comes with a warning that force eject may damage files.
Any help appreciated. Running Yosemite on a late 2010 Air (though I get the same problem on my 2011 Macbook pro).
    Thx.

I've been seeing the same problem (and reported it as a bug) with a number of applications (though not the Finder). When a file is in use it is flagged by the system Yosemite seems to either not change the file's flag to not in use or the system isn't getting that the flag has changed. So far exiting the program has solved it for me in every instance - though it is a pain. I think for now it is something we'll just have to live with until Apple tracks it down.

  • Finder can't eject USB Flash drives, User Specific

I am unable to unmount any file drive that is attached to my computer using Finder for my main user profile.  (USB, SDHC, Hard drives, flash cards, flash drives, etc)  I don't get any error messages at all (nor does anything show up in the Console log).  If I hit command+e, click the eject button, or drag the drive to the trash, nothing happens at all.
I can use the "sudo umount f /Volumes/etc" command in terminal, and can eject using Disk Utility.  No matter what I do, I can't get it to work in Finder.  I've tried restarting the computer, finder, spotlight but to no avail.  I have fixed permissions, reinstalled Lion, deleted and reinstalled my User account, but none of these things has fixed my issue.
I am at my wit's end, and would really like to avoid trashing this user and starting fresh.

Are you running 3rd party software like an anti-virus or cleaning program? If so, try stopping them and try again. Also see:

  • Satellite Pro A300 can not find USB devices

    Hello forum,
we have a costumer who has bought a Toshiba Satelite Pro A300 from us, but he gets a strange error on it.
he connects a Sandberg USB 2.0 5port Hub to one of the usb ports, the pc finds the hub, but when he connects a memory stick to the hub nothing happens.
the hub and memory stick works on others pc's.
    hope somebody can help.

    Hi
What happens if you connect the memory stick directly without this USB hub?
I had also an USB hub but these hubs are a little bit complicated and tricky The USB specifications allows a certain power and depending on the devices that you connect you have to use an active USB hub, that means with external power supply.
But normally Satellite Pro A300 should have enough USB ports If its necessary I would recommend an USB hub with 2 or 3 ports maximum

    MultipointServer 2012:
Is it possible to eject USB devices without administrator rights from a staion hub on MultipointServer 2012.
The  Safely Remove Hardware Function allways requires admin rights from the user??

I don't even see the icon for safely removing hardware.  My patrons are a bit nervous about just pulling their thumb drives out.

  • USB Device Not Recognized - is my iPod toast?

Got a new computer recently with Win XP. When I try to connect my iPod with a USB adapter I keep getting "USB Device not Recognized" and if I click that I get "Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device."
I can connect other USB devices like my compact flash cards etc. The iPod was working on my old computer.
    Any ideas??
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

I had a new ipod and windows wasnt recognizing it or giving me the message "new hardware found" and then telling me the drivers were missing... this is what I did and it fixed my problem.
    1. go to www.driverguide.com and sign up (for free)
    2. download usbstor.sys & usbstor.inf (and take note of where you download them to)
    3. update drivers by selecting folder you downloaded the two files to
    4. restart computer
    5. open itunes and then connect ipod
    good luck
