Can't Find Local Host!

Hello all,
So, I am taking my first baby steps into web design.  I have got a good grip on html, css, and javascript, and I decided to start learning php and MySQL.  I also installed phpMyAdmin.
If I am remembering the order I did everything in, I enabled php first, then I enabled Apache2, installed MySQL, and then installed phpMyadmin.  I followed editing MANY .conf files and other files I probably should have learned more before doing, because I have since found people saying different things to change and some saying not to change anything.
The porblem I am having is this: when I try to go to localhost on my browser (and I have tried all the ways to get to it) the browser (both Safari and FF) say they cannot find the server localhost.
I have added virtual hosts, I have changed php.ini.default to php.ini.  I have tried putting phpMyAdmin in both the sites folder and the WebDeisgn documents folder...I have tried everything. So much in fact I don't know if I can work my way back, so if someone can tell me how to start all over I would appreciate it.
However, in case this can still be saved, here is what I tried most recently and the result: in the terminal I ran apachectml configtest and got:
"Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using Eric-Sparks-IIs-MacBook.local for ServerName
Syntax OK"
Anyone got any ideas?

Nevermind, I gave up and did a complete erase and re-install (had everything backed up on another computer).  Would remove this post, but I can't find how to do it lol.

  • Gethostbyname can't find Windows hosts on network?

    Hi,
    (OS X 10.4.8 + all latest updates)
    Should gethostbyname be able to resolve Windows host names?
    I'm writing a command line tool that uses gethostbyname - internet hosts get resolved e.g. www.apple.com, as do local Mac hosts. But gethostbyname can't find Windows hosts. Ping and other network utilities also have the same problem, so I 'm guessing it's not just me!
    I have Windows Sharing turned on, and I can mount Windows shares using the host name.
    Am I expecting too much here? Or is there some configuration I'm just not setting somewhere?
    Thanks for any help.

    Yes - it's pretty easy - just have to enter a domain name and DNS server IP address in the DHCP configuration...
    From page 40 of http://www.apple.com/server/pdfs/Network_Services.pdf
    <pre>If you are using Mac OS X Server as your DHCP Server:
    1 In Server Settings, click the Network tab, click DHCP/NetBoot, and choose Configure
    DHCP/NetBoot.
    2 On the Subnet tab, select the subnet on the built-in Ethernet port and click Edit.
    3 In the General tab, enter the following information:
    Start: 10.0.1.3
    End: 10.0.1.254
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 10.0.1.1
    4 Click the DNS tab and enter the following information:
    Default Domain: example.com
    DNS Servers: 10.0.1.2
    5 Click the Save button and log out of Server Settings. </pre>

  • Installing EM12c: Installer can't find database host name....?

    Hello all,
    I'm trying to install EM12c. I'm near the last steps, alll requirements passed.
    I have a fresh install of 11.2.0.3 database on a second host, listening for connections.
    But the EM12c installer keeps error'ing out saying it cannot find the host name for the database server.
    I can ping that same server name (I've quadruple checked to make sure it is right)....I've cut from the installer and pasted into a ssh session both as root and oracle user on the target GRID/EM install server...it pings just fine.
    ON the database server, I've done tnsping..and it shows listener is up, I've entered valid ports and host name.
    ON the target EM server, I've even entered in the /etc/hosts file...the IP and server name....still to no avail.
    Any suggestions out there on what else to check? I have downloaded and using the latest EM12c install media...I downloaded it about 2x weeks ago...so, should be latest patched version.
    Thanks in advance,
    cayenne
    ps. Sorry...both EM and database server are on RHEL5 These are VMWare VMs....

  • Can't find local cluster

    So I recently migrated to a new hard drive since my laptop just ran out of warranty. Everything was working fine I just wanted a faster one.
    I used SuperDuper to make a true direct copy and everything seemed to running smooth. Until I launched compressor. Because batch monitor can't find even my local computer as a cluster, I can not encode anything. I tried removing compressor, then re-installling it several times but no luck.
    Is there a way for me to solve this without re-installing my laptop, please!

  • [Cisco FAQ] - How can I find the "HOST ID" "VALIDATION KEY" and LICENSES I currently have?

    Please let me know where I can get this information

    The HOST ID is actually the serial number of the chassis minus all the preceeding zeros. To find Host ID, Validation Key and Current licenses, go to the SYSTEM TAB, LICENCE MANAGEMENT - all are displayed on this page.

    Hi Kyle,
    Hope you are doing good.
    if it is the R/3 server, the easiest option would be to navigate to /nSm51 .

  • Can't Find Local Directory

    Hi I am rookie to the command line. However, this is scenario. My computer name is "networks" but when I open the Terminal it is showing the computer as "listserv:~networks" and it is not showing the local directory.
    Shouldn't it be "networks" since that is the name of the computer?
    I am not sure where listserv came from but I am the only user on the computer. The only thing I recall I was trying to install a listserv trial software awhile back but decide not to. I am not sure if this made and change to the computer name at the root side.
    Anyway, can someone tell how to delet that listserv:~network name and how I can view the files in the local directory. Thanks!

    Hi
    System Preferences > Sharing. This is where you will find your computer name. Terminal is telling you that your computer name is listserv. Click Show All at the top of the System Preferences window, now select Accounts. You will see your account details listed, the short name of your account is networks. The ~ symbol is terminal shorthand for your home folder /Users/Home. This will take the short name that is in your account details you’ve just seen in System Preferences > Accounts.
    You can’t delete listserv:~network without changing your account details or creating another administrator account, logging in with that and deleting the old account. This is fairly bog standard account administration stuff that you should be familiar with. Terminal on launch displays the admin account short name and takes you to the admin account’s home folder by default.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Can't access locally hosted website from behind the router, but can outside

    Hi, I recently had to be moved from ATT DSL to U-verse. At home I host a small non-commercial website with a domain name registered, listening on port 80.  I can access the website if signed in to my employer's VPN at home, but not from any machine in my home network.  This worked for a few days after switching, but then suddenly stopped working. Any idea what's going on and if it can be fixed? Since I can get to it from VPN, I assume folks outside of U-verse can see it.  How about folks with U-verse as their ISP?  The web site is http://www.jtlanguage.com. Thanks. -John

    I suspect that the U-Verse RG is smart enough to see that the IP address you are attempting to route to is itself, and it is not applying the port forwarding to traffic coming from internal addresses as it is from external traffic arriving (since the traffic is coming from behind the firewall, not outside it).  If this is the case, you could put a hosts file entry on your local machines to identify the internal IP address rather than the external IP address for the web server, so that the computers go directly to the machine behind the firewall.

  • Getting ftp error message. Can't find remote host

    I'm using this for three websites. All the same user and pw. Tried everything. BTW, don't laugh, still using CS3. About to upgrade but having to learn how to import settings. Never done that before.
    Why would my other websites work, but not this one?

    So, let me summarize what I think we know -
    You have 3 websites
    You have a separate site definition for each
    You have used the same user and password for each site's FTP information
    You can connect without issue to two of those three sites but the third fails
    Is that correct? Normally an FTP connection fails like this because either the host is not properly specified in the ftp host field, or the root directory is not properly specified in the Host directory field. What do you have in each of those fields in the site definition for the site that is failing?

  • Java in JSP page can't find local file

    Hi. I am very new to JSP development. I am having a strange issue. When I try to access a file within the same directory as my JSP file I get a FileNotFoundException thrown. Although, I can link the file using HTML so I know it is there in the proper directory.
    <%
    String line;
    int i = 0;
    try {
         File file  = new File("test1.csv");
         Scanner in = new Scanner(file);
         while (in.hasNextLine()) {
              line = in.nextLine();
              String strArray[] = line.split(",");
              for(int j = 0; j < strArray.length; ++j) {
                   out.print((i != 0) ? (" " + strArray[j] + " ") : (" <b>" + strArray[j] + "</b> "));
              out.println("<br>");
              i++;
    catch(IOException e) {
          out.print(e);
    %>Anyone know how I can get the JSP to read the file?

    java.io.File understands disk file system paths only, not web paths. Also, using absolute paths in java.io stuff is preferred above relative paths, because the current working directory may differ per environment.
    In case of a webapplication you can use ServletContext#getRealPath() to convert a web path to an absolute disk file system path which you can use further in the usual java.io stuff.

  • Can't find local weather info

    How do you access the local weather on the new DVR remote?  We get local on the 8s but it is just general for the whole country and not for our area.  Is there a special button or code to enter to access local information.

    Local forecasts are no longer available in all areas. They may be working on restoring it to your area, but that info is difficult to come by.It has nothing to do with the remote.

  • Where can I find Mozilla hosted installers for 9.0.1?

    I'm a support technician for a college in an online environment. Unfortunately, Firefox 10 is incompatible with our webmail client due to a Java issue. I was referring people to ftp.mozilla.org to download the 9.0.1 installer to downgrade, but now it seems to have vanished. Does anyone know what happened to it? Does anyone have a safe and secure source for both Mac and PC versions of the 9.0.1 installer?

    Hi,
    I am trying to install 9.0.1 version of firefox.
    I got to the web page "Index of /pub/mozilla.org//firefox/releases/9.0.1/win32", what's next steps to do the installation ? Is this the right web page?
    Could you give me the step-by-step instructions?

  • How to find a host

    Hello
    I have one 4006 and 6 2950.
    How can I find a host on my network (Switch an port)

    Hello,
    you need to have either the IP address or the MAC address of the host you are looking for. Check the ARP table (on your Layer 3 device or router) for the IP to MAC address mapping, then check the mac address table on your switch(es) for the port that MAC address is connected to. This can be cumbersome when there are trunk links involved, you basically need to track the MAC address down to where it is connected to only one access port.
