Can't install Mountain Lion, Macintosh HD is locked

Hello All:
I'm having trouble installing ML.  The installer told me that my Macintosh HD had errors that could not be fixed.  I ran disk utility to verify/repair the HD.  It took a couple of tries / restarts.  I think I also reset the PRAM.  Now, I get to the point where I choose the disk for installation and it says that it's locked.  When I fire up the terminal and do a 'mount' I see that it's mounted up 'read-only' and I can't refresh the mount because it's the disk being used to boot.  How can I unlock the disk for the ML installer to continue?
Late 2008 Macbook Unibody.
Thanks
- Skylar

I had the disk lock error too and was stuck in Recovery Mode limbo with no way out except formatting my harddrive
For those of you who do not own any external harddrives or 8GB+ USB drives etc, this solution may be for you. Also, my machine is a macbook pro that had Lion (installed via App Store) and now has Mountain Lion (installed via App Store).
I do have a 4GB USB stick, so I used the terminal to copy some important files from my harddrive to my USB.
The command for that is  cp. Use cp -r for copying whole directories over.
$> cp -r /Volumes/Image\<push TAB key so it completes the name>/<file/directory> /Volumes/<USBDRIVE Name>/
Once I got the files I needed, I was ready to erase my harddrive *tear*
==============================================================================
So I rebooted my Macbook, held cmd+R (before the grey screen came on, until the apple logo appears).
Then I was in Lion's Recovery Move (instead of Mountain Lion's Recovery mode
I used Disk Utility to try to erase my Mcintosh HD, but it complained that it can't do it. So I used the "Repair Option on it" then I fell asleep. You MUST let it finish! It may not seem like it will finish, but it will eventually say it cannot repair it.
When I came to (lol), It sais it could not repair my drive, but I tried the Erase option again, and it worked! (I used the "Fastest" setting, and my HD is Journaled, HFS+).
After it finished erasing, I rebooted, and instead of an Apple logo coming up at the boot screen, it showed a folder in it's place with a question mark. I freaked out at first but then I did this:
Use the power button to turn off your mac. Use it again to turn it on, and do the cmd+R trick, and this will put your computer in INTERNET RECOVERY MODE (I had never heard of this, but it saved my life). It takes about 30 minutes to do it's thing, then it will bring you to the Mountain Lion Recovery Mode again.
This time, when you click on Install OS X, it will bring up the Mountain Lion Install dialogue, and you should be able to select your HD with no problem. It will re-download the Mountain Lion install and takes about 6 hours. This is basically a clean install, instead of an upgrade.
Lesson of the day: BACKUP YOUR STUFF BEFORE YOU UPGRADE!
Let me know if this works for you, or doesn't work for you. I couldn't find any responses that helped me (as I did not have extra memory peripherals laying around), so I hope someone else finds it useful.

  • HT4463 I Can't Install Mountain Lion On My Macbook

I Can't Install Mountain Lion On My Macbook White 10.6.8 (Late 2010) . It Goes Throught The Process, And Once It's Downloaded, It Doesn't Say To Restart. I Restart It On My Own And It Still Boots Up To Snow Leopard. I Tried Downloaded It Over And Over Again Five Times, And It Does The Same Thing. Does Any1 Have Any Insight On This Issue?

As a rule the Mac App Store won;t let you buy and download Mountain Lion if your hardware doesn't support it, so the first question is did you get ML from the MAS?
If so then what procedure are you following to install the OS? You wrote that
Once It's Downloaded, It Doesn't Say To Restart.
but downloading is only part of the installation process, what exactly is happening on the system?

    Yes, you can.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • I erased my HD. Now I can't instal mountain lion from my bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."

I bought  mountain lion, made a bootable flash drive.
I booted from it and it went to upgrading right away!
So I stopped it and went to my former recovery partition I erased my HD because I wanted a clean start.
Now I can't instal mountain lion from the bootable flash drive, and keep getting "installation error. Try again."
and there is no 4 choices window.
I don't know what to do.

How did you create the USB install thumb drive? If it was with Disk Utility I have run into this problem and have since used THIS program to make the USB install drive.
As to your problem you only have one option and that is to Reinstall the Original OS X version that came on your computer or if you still have the Lion Recovery Partition use that to reinstall Lion. Or if you system came with Lion and you have No Lion Recovery HD Partition you can boot the system from over the internet and Reinstall Lion.
At startup hold down the Command+Option+r keys until you saa a spinning Globe in the center of the screen. Once that loads Repartition the drive as One partition and then reinstall Lion.

Can I install Mountain Lion 64-bit over top of 32-bit version installed by mistake.  Machine is 24-inch mid 2007 iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (64-bit?)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mountain Lion is a full 64-bit operating system. Why do you think Mountain Lion is 32-bit in your computer?
To check that you are definitely using a 64-bit operating system, open Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities) and type:
    uname -a
Then, tell us what you see at the end after RELEASE. If you see i386, you are running a 32-bit operating system. If you see x86_64, you are using a 64-bit operating system. Also, the processor of your Mac is 64-bit

Since I've installed Mountain Lion, I am having lock up issues with multiple programs. MS Outlook has crashed and I've lost all my folders. HELP?

okay I've finally been able to get tor and all the other programs to work according to my plan the only thing that's still making problems is that iptables doesn't work as I want it to, when I start chromium without proxy settings privoxy doesn't seem to forward the information to polipo.. do I need to add another rule to iptables.rules in order for the program to know it has to reroute the information again or how can I get this to work? and is there any way to run rtorrent with proxy support?
anyway, problem 2 and 3 are still to be solved.
and does anybody know where i can get a good dansguardian blacklist that was not designed for 6 year old children and for which I don't need to subscribe? I'm still getting these partypoker popups -.-
//e: with iptables it's the same thing as described in the first post. https works, http doesnt. I get the output "Invalid header received from client." on http sites. still no idea why though.. (and the https-version of torcheck.xenubite says i'm tor unprotected while starting the browser with iptables)

  • Can't install Mountain Lion.

i cannot install mountain lion nothing happens after clicking install. It downloads from the AppStore fine. I accept the terms and conditions then it gave me an install window showing my harddrive. I couldn't make a green circle or select the Hard drive of my macbook pro, but I clicked on install. then the window closes and nothing happens. I did this twice. I went back to the app store and it shows the Download button again on my purchases for mountain lion. It let me begin downloading again. Would this happen if I had already downloaded it once?  There was not warning saying I had it already.  What in the world is going on? I can't seem to find anyone who has this problem.
Note: I believe I had only have 12 GB on my hard disk, now 8, i think after downloading MLion
